WORLD WATER DAY

22 MARCH Submitted by: Danielle McNaughton

Take Action for World Water Day In te reo Māori, wai means water – the lifeline of all things and the world’s most precious resource. Here in the Upper Clutha Catchment, we all rely on our lakes and rivers – whether it’s for drinking, swimming or enjoying a day by the water – our community thrives because of these precious natural resources.

to take action to preserve and maintain these deep alpine lakes and waterways for generations to come. Our alpine lakes have absorbed more than 150 years of human activities. Looking at them from afar, it’s hard to imagine that Lakes Wānaka, Whakatipu and Hāwea could be in danger of losing their pristine acclaim; but the reality is the lakes are experiencing an unacceptable rate of decline.

With a purpose of accelerating community action for safe and healthy water, WAI Wānaka is committed to mobilising communities throughout the Upper Clutha

On World Water Day, WAI will be at Ripe with familyfriendly activities and keeping festival-goers hydrated. For more information, head to www.waiwanaka.nz

But what would happen if our waterways became too polluted to be safe? It’s hard to imagine when we see seemingly pristine waters. Sadly, the health of our lakes and rivers is declining. This World Water Day (Saturday, 22 March), let’s take collective action to safeguard our fresh water for future generations.

WAI will be out and about this Friday, 21 March. You’ll find them: • Hāwea Store & Kitchen, 10.00am - 12.00pm • Outside Kai Whakapai, 10.00am - 4.00pm • Dinosaur Playground, 10.00am - 4.00pm • Mitre 10 Mega, 11.00am - 1.00pm • New World Three Parks, 11.00am - 4.00pm
