The inspiring and action-packed Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka is on Saturday, 19 February, and we are looking for volunteers to join the amazing Crombie Lockwood volunteer crew. Once again, we will be holding the main event at Glendhu Bay, however the bike course will take athletes through Wanaka, out to Hawea and Luggate. Integrity Homes Challenge Wanaka Half takes place on Saturday, 19 February, with the Puzzling World Junior Challenge on Friday, 18 February, and the Puzzling World Intermediate, Mitre 10 Wanaka Secondary Schools and Adaptive event on Thursday, 17 February. As a charitable trust, the Challenge Wanaka Sports Trust is dependent on the goodwill, knowledge, skills and valuable time of volunteers.

A very frustrating event this week, where a youth decided to play a prank and pretend to be drowning while swimming in the Clutha River. A passer by jumped in and swam out to save him, to be told it was a prank. Given New Zealand’s current atrocious level of water fatalities, this type of behaviour is unacceptable and could easily have led to a disastrous outcome. A case of vandalism occurred at the Wanaka Rodeo Club rooms this past week. Doors were kicked in and a vast array of damage caused inside the building. Inquiries are continuing into this.

Well, good day Wanaka. Even though it’s been back to work for many, I hope you have all been able to take advantage of the magnificent weather we have enjoyed here in paradise.

You may have noticed several checkpoints spring up around town, with out of town staff manning them. Queenstown Road Policing have been assisting with these alcohol checkpoints, and on the whole, Wanaka had an improvement with a reduced number of drivers being caught over the limit. There is still the odd one or two, and one person who when signalled to pull over, failed to do so, creating a fleeing driver situation. His vehicle was located and promptly impounded, and he is going to have a wee chat and face the consequences in due course.

Now we are mostly back to work, please pay attention to your manner of driving, as we are! We will continue to enforce the rules around seatbelts, cell phone usage when driving, speed, and of course alcohol. On that, please make sure after a day out on the lake or river in your boat or jet ski, remember you must get it home. It's all very nice to have a few beers on the water in this fine weather when a thirst can be built up quickly, but remember that alcohol is still affecting you as you tow your pleasure craft home so know when to call it quits with the alcohol when on the water. Speaking of alcohol, it seems we are getting back to the old routine of people not being able to control themselves when on a night out. People have been trespassed from various establishments during the week, with one person being caught climbing over the roof to gain access to a bar after having been refused entry due to alcohol consumption. There were a couple of crashes in the area in the past week, fortunately only minor in nature with no one getting hurt. So please be careful when driving, even if you know the road well things can change and sneak up on you causing poor decision making at times which can result in the unexpected happening. So, while driving please stay alert and stay alive. Well, that’s all from me for this week. Keep safe and remember we still have a vast quantity of lost property at the station, so if you’ve lost it, we may have it, and its well worth coming in to check.

Reports came in of a person with an offensive weapon around Albert Town this week. A young person was seen with what was described as a butterfly knife. This was confiscated and will be duly destroyed with parental permission.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Multi-Sport for BIG little kids The Stride Ride and Side is a mini triathlon for athletes aged 2 to 6 years. Children run a short distance before hopping on their bike, scooter, balance bike or the likes and complete a short ride. Central Otago Tamariki aged 2 to 6 years are once again invited to the Sport Central, Stride Ride and Slide in Wanaka. The event will be held at the Wanaka Recreation Centre at 11.00am on 30 January. If you are looking for a recommendation, just ask the 120 Tamariki that attended last years event, or the Mums, Dads, Grandees, and siblings that also attended to cheer on the wee ones.

The kids then transition onto the slippery slide before running through the finishing shute. The distances are age appropriate with no gold medals up for grabs. The athletes may need some adult help as the event is on grass. You can register at www.sportotago.co.nz at a cost of $5, then you’ll be in the draw for special prizes. Registrations close at 8.00am on Sunday, 30 January. Walk up registration can be taken on the day for $8.

Albert Town Community Association AGM year. Vote for your Committee for 2022 and share your ideas for future projects in the community. Depending on what Traffic Light level we are on, it is possible that only residents holding a vaccine passport can attend the meeting. An alternative for the folk not holding a passport is to submit nominations, questions, or ideas prior to the meeting. Alternatively, you can appoint a proxy. Albert Town Community Association Annual General Meeting is on Sunday, 23 January at 4.00pm at the Albie Tavern Restaurant, Alison Avenue. All residents are warmly invited to attend this meeting and hear what your Community Association has achieved this

You’ll need a helmet, dry clothes to change into after the fun slide, your bike and your fastest shoes. Bring some money along as Menlove’s real fruit ice creams will be there. Lunch is taken care of, as the Aspiring Athletes Club will be on hand with a sausage sizzle. The highlight is always the fire brigade that kindly turn up and make the water slide possible. Sport Otago’s free play equipment trailer and blow-up obstacle course will be on hand, meaning Mum and Dad can enjoy a coffee while the kids entertain themselves. Toastmasters is a local community group where people can improve public speaking, networking and leadership skills, in a supportive and educational environment. Karen and Liz started Toastmasters at the same time back in 2019. Karen had lost all her confidence. She needed it back. Her father was terminally ill and she wanted to be a confident speaker at his funeral. With the skills that she learnt from Toastmasters, Karen spoke at her father’s funeral, got second place in the Humourous Speech Area contest in 2019 and she is now Wanaka Club President and Area C2 Director.

MY BUSINESS Meet Sidekick Wanaka’s new Director, Peter Humphrey BCom(Hons), CPP, CA Peter is astute, calm and he is dedicated to helping people. He is focused on building authentic relationships and guiding people through smart decision-making in business. To him, the human element of accounting is the most important. His strength is in developing long-term trust and genuine rapport with his clients.
