DAWN

PLUNGE TO MARK WORLD WATER DAY

Sunday 22 March

This World Water Day, Sunday, 22 March, WAI Wānaka invites everyone to reflect on the value they place on clean, safe water - and consider how we can each play a part in protecting it.

Established by the United Nations in 1993, the international day highlights the importance of fresh water and the global effort to achieve safe water and sanitation for all. This year’s theme focuses on water and gender equality, recognising how reliable access to clean water underpins fair, healthy and thriving communities.

Here in our rohe (region), we rely on the lakes and rivers for drinking, swimming and everyday wellbeing. Our community thrives because of these precious natural resources, yet the health of these waterways is in decline, facing contamination from increased pressures and invasive species.

Local not-for-profit WAI Wānaka is raising

awareness of World Water Day, and the issues affecting local water quality. A range of events and initiatives are happening across Wānaka, offering something for everyone - whether you enjoy beer, oysters, French onion soup, a good coffee, yoga or the RIPE Food and Wine Festival.

Visit: waiwanaka.nz/world-water-day-2026 for the full schedule and ways to get involved.

To mark the occasion, WAI is hosting a Dawn Plunge on Friday, 20 March and everyone is invited. Gather at 7.00am at the Wānaka lakefront, opposite the Pembroke skate park. Take a sunrise dip to celebrate water, and take action for a fairer water future. This free, all-ages event includes hot drinks and kai, with pre-registration required at: waiwanaka/nz/events.

This World Water Day is a reminder that protecting the waterways we love is a shared responsibility – now and for generations to come.

Abbeyfield Wānaka to benefit from cinema fundraiser

Abbeyfield House Wānaka will be in the spotlight on Wednesday, 1 April when Cinema Paradiso hosts a special charity fundraiser showing of Project Hail Mary, starring Ryan Gosling. Moviegoers will be supporting affordable housing for older residents while enjoying a night at the movies. A portion of every ticket sold across all three Cinema Paradiso screens that day will go directly to Abbeyfield Wānaka. Each ticket also includes a raffle draw with some amazing prizes up for grabs.

The event marks the launch of Abbeyfield Wānaka’s new promotional short film, which will screen at the cinema for the next few months. It outlines the group’s vision to establish an Abbeyfield House in Wānaka – providing affordable, independent living for people over 65 who are renting and unable to enter the property market.

Abbeyfield House offers private studio rooms within a shared home environment, where residents enjoy daily companionship and shared meals while maintaining their independence.

Organisers say the fundraiser is both a celebration

and an opportunity for the community to help create a secure, connected future for older locals. Everyone is welcome.

Free public seminars across Central Otago and the Southern Lakes will give local communities the chance to learn from leading eye specialists about age related macular degeneration (MD) – the leading cause of blindness in New Zealand. MD affects 1 in 7 people over 50, and by age 80, one in four will experience some degree of vision loss. Early understanding and detection are key to protecting sight and maintaining independence.

MD damages the macula, the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision. While it does not cause complete blindness, it can significantly affect reading, driving, and recognising faces. Because symptoms often develop gradually, timely assessment is essential.

Macular Degeneration NZ (MDNZ) is a charitable trust working to reduce the impact of MD through Awareness, Education, Support, and Representation.

Free seminar details:

• Alexandra (Speaker Dr Logan Mitchell) Sat 28 March, 10.30am-12.00pm Alexandra Community Centre Hall.

CRIME LINE

ON MONDAY 2 MARCH a male was trespassed from a property at the corner of McDougall Street and Upton Street after he had been pressuring people for money.

ON FRIDAY 6 MARCH Police trespassed a 56-year-old male from the Albert Town Camping Ground.

ON SATURDAY 7 MARCH Police were called to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Upton Street and Helwick Street. One of the occupants received injuries, as a result a male driver responsible has been charged with careless causing injury.

ON SUNDAY 8 MARCH a member of the public reported a group of youths lighting fireworks which created a small tussock fire at the North Lake Pump Track. Thank you to the locals who were able to assist before a FENZ truck arrived. This irresponsible behaviour is concerning, it could have had resulted in more serious consequences.

STEADY NUMBER OF DRIVING complaints throughout the week that Police responded to. Complaints relate to Police RIDS focus, specifically speed, distraction and impairment. Reports of vehicles crossing the centre line, unsafe passing manoeuvres and inconsiderate driving. On Thursday 5 March a report of a vehicle travelling 40 kph across the Crown Range with a row of 50 cars following.

ON THE SAME DAY a male was stopped for travelling at 81 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in Luggate. He was stopped and underwent an evidential breath test which returned a result of 231. ION issued for speed, he was close to receiving an Infringement Offence Notice for EBA (Excessive Blood Alcohol).

ON SUNDAY 8 MARCH Police were called to a vehicle that had driven into a water race at Loess Lane, Hawea Flat, QueenstownLakes District. The male driver underwent EBA procedures. Concerning reading of 1288 mcg.

ANOTHER CONCERNING ALCOHOL related vehicle accident where a driver of a vehicle failed to stop at the roundabout at Aubrey and Anderson Roads. The vehicle crashed into a turning car. The driver underwent EBA procedures, returning a high reading of 1508 mcg. The female driver has been summoned to Queenstown District Court on 20 March for EBA and Careless Driving.

TWO VERY HIGH READINGS across the weekend, it goes without saying how disappointing this behaviour is.

A FEMALE WITH DEMENTIA visiting from out of town was reported missing overnight on Sunday Morning. She was located in Wānaka.

A REMINDER if you’re leaving your kayak or dinghy on or near a lake or river, make sure it is secured. It would be helpful from a Police perceptive to have a name and phone number on it. Anyone who has a kayak or dinghy, please go and check that it’s still there. We’ve had a couple of these located in recent months and have been unable to identify the owner. A full scale LandSAR response could be avoided.

POLICE NON-EMERGENCY. Use the online report options to make a non-emergency report, or you can call us on 105 (Ten-Five) 24/7. If it’s happening now, or someone’s in danger, call 111 (Triple-One). 105 Police Non-Emergency | New Zealand Police.

‘This Book Made Me Think Of You’ by Libby Page

When Tilly Nightingale receives a call telling her there’s a birthday gift from her husband waiting for her at her local bookshop, it couldn’t  come as more of a shock. Partly, because she  can’t remember the last time she read a book  for pleasure. Mainly, because Joe died five months ago...

‘The Look’ by Michelle Obama

In this celebration of style, from the moment she entered the public eye during her husband's U.S. Senate campaign through her time as the first Black First Lady of the United  States, Michelle Obama shares how she uses  the beauty and intrigue of fashion to draw attention to her message.

Where the River Meets Home: A Lifestyle Without Equal

ALBERT TOWN 63 Kingston Street

Value is often measured in square metres, but here it’s measured in moments.

Offered for only the second time in its history, this home is defined by its generous proportions and “choose your own adventure” layout. Set on a large, flat section with mature trees and established hedge, 6 plus car off street parking, minutes from the Clutha river edges, walk/bike run tracks, views to Mt Maude, plus under 10 minutes walk to Albert Town amenities. Whether you are looking for a quintessential family home, a high-performing investment, a holiday retreat, or a strategic site for a future build, this location is envied for a reason. The test is simple: Walk to the river bank, hear the water, and feel the peace. If ‘lifestyle goals’ are on your list, consider them ticked.
