International Women’s Day is a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. It reminds us to imagine and work towards a gender equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated. A world in which all women work together to achieve these aims.
The Wanaka Upper Clutha Lions Club proudly celebrates International Women’s Day each year with a fundraising dinner featuring an inspirational woman as guest speaker. Proceeds from the event are donated to the speaker’s
nominated charity or organisation, supporting important causes within our community and beyond.
This year’s guest speaker is Pauline Blomfield, the Founder of K9 Medical Detection NZ, a charitable trust working to improve the health of all New Zealanders by using specially trained dogs in controlled clinical environments to assist in the early detection of cancer and other diseases.
If you would like to join us for dinner in support of this worthy cause, held at the Lake Hāwea Community Centre on Wednesday, 11 March, contact Barbara Mackenzie: bmackenzie5@yahoo.com.au

Event to strengthen Wānaka’s emergency readiness
The Wānaka Community Resilience Group is hosting GET READY Wānaka, a free, family-friendly community event designed to help households feel more prepared – and more connected – in the face of emergencies.
The event will be held in front of Mitre 10 MEGA Wānaka on Saturday, 28 February, from 10.00am to 2.00pm, and offers locals the chance to meet Wānaka’s emergency services and community response teams.
Representatives from the Wānaka Volunteer Fire Brigade, Hato Hone St John Ambulance, Coastguard, Wānaka Police, Wānaka Search and Rescue (LandSAR), and Emergency Management Otago (EMO) will be there, with vehicles and equipment on display. It’s a great opportunity for adults and children to ask questions, see things up close, and better understand how these teams support the community in emergencies.
Mitre 10 MEGA will also showcase practical items for grab-and-go emergency kits, with simple guidance on what is useful to have at home and how to get started.

Outdoor adventurers are being reminded that when faced with a fast, murky or roaring river, “if in doubt, stay out.” That’s one of the key lessons that will be promoted by the Upper Clutha Tramping Club (UCTC) as it hosts its annual River Awareness and Crossing Course this month.
Scheduled for Thursday, February 26, but dependent on the river conditions, the course aims to boost confidence and safety among those who enjoy venturing into the backcountry.
Led by Roy Bailey, an experienced member of Wānaka Search and Rescue, the course covers how to assess river hazards, make sensible crossing decisions, and prepare for unpredictable alpine environments. The initiative ties in with the New Zealand Mountain Safety Council’s recent river safety campaign, which warns that too-fast, murky, or debris-filled rivers can spell serious danger.
While open to both members and newcomers, health and safety regulations require all participants to be club members. Non-members can join by paying the annual $50 membership fee. Registrations can be made by emailing Helen Clarke at helen.clarke09@gmail.com

Jackie Bristow and friends light up Paddons Paddock
Wānaka’s music-loving community is invited to gather for an afternoon of shared songs and storytelling, with Jackie Bristow & Friends performing at Paddons Paddock on Sunday, 1 March.
The event brings together a mix of local and international artists for an intimate, collaborative show, while also celebrating the release of Bristow’s new single Let It Rain, released 4 February. Designed as a relaxed daytime gathering, the afternoon focuses on connection, collaboration, fine wine and the power of live music to bring people together. A special highlight of the event will be a live performance of Let It Rain by Jackie Bristow and her sister, Katrina Bristow. The duet marks the firstever recorded release featuring the sisters singing together. The moment captures a full-circle chapter for the siblings, who grew up singing side by side in New Zealand before building lives and musical paths on opposite sides of the world.
New Zealand–born and Nashville-based Americana artist Jackie Bristow will headline the show alongside
long-time collaborator Mark Punch, The Katrina Bristow Band, and emerging local indie pop act sloer. The diverse lineup reflects the spirit of the event, blending local talent with international experience in a welcoming, community-focused setting.
Audiences can expect heartfelt songwriting, rich harmonies, and a warm, inclusive atmosphere that encourages listening, reflection, and celebration. “This day is about bringing people together to celebrate music and community,” says Bristow.

CRIME LINE
BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!
POLICE HAVE BEEN FOCUSING on our roads with the increase of visitors in town recently. The strategy used by police to monitor dangerous driving is RIDS – Restraints (seatbelts, child car seats), Impairment (drugs, alcohol), Distraction (mobile phones), and Speed. Please remember that all of these things can lead to accidents on our roads.
POLICE STOPPED A DRIVER coming out of Cardrona Village towards Wānaka, along the 80km zone, overtaking at up to 150km/hr while approaching a blind corner! For his efforts he had his licence suspended and will be going to court.
THERE HAS BEEN AN INCREASE in council and police monitoring of Roy’s Peak carpark. Many vehicles are not parked in the designated areas, blocking pathways and exits. Cars not parked in designated areas will receive infringement notices. WITH SCHOOLS BACK in action please remember the speed limits in place around school zones and to reduce speeds to 20km/hr when passing school buses in either direction.
