FROM MOUNTAINS TO MOVIES NZ MOUNTAIN FILM & BOOK FESTIVAL
ALBERT TOWN BRIDGE CLOSED
Returns to Wānaka for five days of extraordinary storytelling The NZ Mountain Film & Book Festival returns to Wānaka from Friday, 19 June until Tuesday, 23 June, bringing five days of extraordinary storytelling, adventure and inspiration to the Lake Wānaka Centre. The festival will transform Wānaka into a hub for mountain culture, with award-winning films, guest speakers, filmmakers, authors and adventurers sharing stories from some of the world’s wildest places – and our own backyard. This year’s programme features 63 films selected from 266 international entries, including 18 NZ-made productions and an impressive 17 world premieres. Many of the films will screen for the first time in Wānaka, with filmmakers attending to introduce their work and share the stories behind the camera. For those who love homegrown storytelling, Pure NZ Tahi and Pure NZ Rua sessions on Saturday and Sunday afternoons offer a chance to see some of the country’s best new adventure films. From Fiordland expeditions to alpine crossings, these sessions regularly sell out. Guest speakers are another festival highlight.
Headlining this year’s programme is award-winning French alpinist and filmmaker Sébastien Montaz-Rosset, who will share stories from a career spent documenting mountain life with honesty, intimacy and grit. Joining him is Lake Hāwea-based alpinist Petrouchka SteinerGrierson, who has been at the forefront of exploratory ski mountaineering in New Zealand, completing demanding first ski descents on peaks including Aoraki/ Mt Cook and Mt Silberhorn. The festival’s Book Festival also returns, featuring ten speakers, author talks, readings and the everpopular Words & Wine evening – where attendees can enjoy a complimentary glass of Maude wine while hearing stories of conservation, ocean exploration, mountaineering and resilience from people who’ve truly lived the adventure. Families are encouraged to join in too, with free one-hour family film sessions to spark curiosity and inspire the next generation of explorers. Can’t make every show? Festival films will be available to stream online from 24 June to 31 July. The full programme and tickets are available now at mountainfilm.nz
