SNOWSPORTS OPPORTUNITIES Submitted by Wanaka Snowsports
Above the inversion layer Wanaka Snowsports Club’s recreational and competitive members have been revelling in the sunshine and early season snow. During summer, NZ snow sports enthusiasts delighted in our high-performance members X Games medals, World Champs medals, Freeride top spots, a Freeski Crystal Globe and FIS Alpine medals. Watching the older athletes celebrating these achievements motivated twenty-three Wanaka Snowsports youth, including 2 snowboarders, 6 alpine ski racers, 7 freeskiers and 8 freeride skiers, to apply for grassroots awards. $500 will be deducted from each of their 2025 snowsports programmes at Cardrona-Treble Cone, taking the amount the club has distributed to our school Yr 2-Yr 8 grassroots athletes to $165,000 since 2013. Some have NZ representative aspirations and others hope to acquire sufficient skills to enjoy our beautiful local mountain environment.
Members volunteer for Alpine race events and fundraisers to help support our young members through a grant system. The club’s membership ranges from age two through to mid-eighties, all enjoying numerous local benefits and events including discounts at CardronaTreble Cone. Club Adult Ski Improvement lessons offered at Treble Cone help to keep members more competent on snow as they age. Peak Perspectives is an opportunity to meet elite athletes, held every Thursday 6.00pm at Aprés. Athletes that have shared their stories and footage, held quizzes and distributed spot prizes include Ben Richards - World Freeride Tour medallist, Ben Barclay - Freeski World Cup medallist and SSNZ Coach Hamish McDougall. Member family gatherings, film nights and celebrations are held regularly.
