THINK TWICE... WANAKA ART SOCIETY’S NEW AWARD and exhibition category dedicated entirely to sustainability in art. In a bid to think about waste generation as part of an art exhibition, Wānaka Arts Society has turned the focus to how waste minimisation can extend to the artworks themselves and subsequently has introduced a new category to this year’s Labour Weekend Exhibition: Think Twice. Open to 2D and 3D artwork, this exciting new curated category and award invites artists to explore the incorporation of recycled, repurposed, or discarded materials into their art practice. Many artists do this already, reshaping found or used objects into creative, interpretive art pieces. Other artists use their art as a way to express environmental concerns and activism. The Society hopes this new category will inspire artists to push boundaries, explore new methods, and consider the environmental impact of their practice.

WAS is seeking art that is conscious and imaginative, and this category will be curated to ensure artistic integrity. Art has always been a mirror to society, and today that mirror reflects a world urgently calling for sustainable action, as our landfills fill up with thoughtlessly discarded items and materials, contributing to climate change and creating problems for future generations. This year’s exhibition celebrates responsibility alongside creativity. Don’t waste your waste. Wānaka Arts Annual Labour Weekend Exhibition: Opening night gala - Thursday, 22 October from 5.00pm. Exhibition open Friday, 23 October until Sunday, 25 October.
