ANZAC Day will be marked by dawn services in Wānaka and Hāwea on Saturday, 25 April. Wānaka’s Dawn Service begins at 7.00am on the Wānaka lakefront, opposite Helwick Street.
Following the Wānaka Dawn Service, participants and public are warmly invited to an early morning tea in the Armstrong Room of the Lake Wānaka Centre, provided by the Wānaka and Districts Lions Club (Men), and Upper Clutha Lions Club (Ladies).
A civic service follows in the Lake Wānaka Centre auditorium at 9.30am, followed by a traditional march by service personnel, other groups, and members of the public. The march will proceed up Ardmore Street to the Wānaka Cenotaph at the top of Chalmers Street for the laying of wreaths and poppies.
Hāwea’s Anzac Dawn Service begins at 7.00am on the Anzac Peninsula, Lake Hāwea Dam.
The ceremony will begin with the symbolic thunderclap, and the Call to Commemoration.
Hāwea Flat School and Mt Aspiring College pupils will be singing “Hareruia”, delivering readings and placing crosses for our fallen. A guest speaker will be followed by the laying of wreaths, the Last Post and Reveille, the Australian and New Zealand anthems, music by pipers and a trumpeter, and a flypast by Tiger Moths.
Attendees are encouraged to arrive between 6.306.45am. Parking is available at the southwest end of the dam (through the gate with the big red poppy), courtesy of Contact Energy, and in front of and immediately behind the Hāwea Hotel.
It is a time to remember and honour the service and sacrifice of our original ANZACs and the generations of servicemen and women who have fought in wars and conflicts in the years since.
Lest we forget.

Wānaka Toastmasters open evening
Curious about building confidence and becoming a more natural speaker? Wānaka Toastmasters is welcoming the community to a free open evening on Thursday, 23 April.
Held at St John, 4 Link Way, doors open at 6.45pm and the meeting starts at 7.15pm. Guests of all backgrounds and experience levels are warmly invited to come along, observe, and take part as much or as little as they like.
As part of Toastmasters International, a global network that has supported millions of people for nearly 100 years, the Wānaka club offers a friendly and encouraging space to practise public speaking, build confidence, and connect with others. Today, the notfor-profit organisation spans more than 14,000 clubs across 144 countries.
For many local members, the benefits reach far beyond the lectern. “Toastmasters challenges you in so many ways. Not only do you become more confident speaking in front of others, you also grow into a better listener and communicator overall.” said Nicole, a member of four years.
From everyday conversations to workplace meetings and presentations, strong communication skills can make a real difference. The open evening is a relaxed opportunity to experience what Toastmasters is all about, meet new people, and take your next step in your speaking journey.
WAO Green Drinks Resilience response event
Fuel prices are rising, supply chains are tightening, and inflation continues to bite. The global ripple effects of the Iran conflict are already being felt here in Aotearoa, exposing the vulnerability of our fuel, food, and climate systems and what that means for households, businesses, and our wider community. Join Wao Aotearoa at the next Green Drinks, which brings this conversation to a local level. Nathan Surendran (Wise Response Society; Schema Consulting) will be presenting via zoom to help us unpack global developments, what it could mean for New Zealand in the coming months, and most importantly how communities like ours can respond with clarity and confidence.
This in person session is about readiness and is a chance to connect in person to explore practical ways to build resilience. From how we think about energy and transport, to strengthening local food systems and community connection, join fellow community members for a chance to step out of the noise, understand the bigger picture, and focus on what we can actually do.

Cold Kids Campaign returns as cost pressures hit families
A local family recently walked through the doors of Community Link feeling overwhelmed. Both parents were working, the children were at school, and on the surface everything seemed fine. Then an unexpected car repair bill hit. Paying it was unavoidable, but it meant the power bill went unpaid. Groceries were stretched, the heater stayed off, and the house grew increasingly cold.
With winter approaching, Community Link is once again rolling out its Cold Kids Campaign, supporting local families struggling to keep their homes warm.
Another local parent faced a similar challenge, often choosing between food and heating, “I’d tuck the kids into bed with extra blankets and hope, because
you feel like you are letting them down.” she said. Through the campaign, she received help with power bills, along with practical advice and reassurance. Community Link says many of those seeking help are working families under growing pressure.
Last year, more than 100 households received heating assistance. Demand has already started, with rising energy and fuel costs placing additional strain on household budgets.
If you can help donations can be made via the Community Link website: communitylink.nz

Dog-friendly beach clean-up with plenty of wag
Calling all dog lovers, lake lovers and anyone keen to do some good while having a bit of fun. Paws for the Lake is coming to Wānaka Station Park on Saturday, 18 April, from 10.30am to 12.00pm, and everyone is invited to join in – including your furry, four-legged friends.
Hosted by WAI Wānaka and Queenstown Lakes District Council, this dog-friendly beach clean-up is all about rolling up your sleeves and clearing rubbish from the shoreline before it reaches the lake. Even better, you can bring your dogs along on a lead and make a morning of it together.
Four-legged friends will be celebrated with a dog trick competition, a prize for best on-lead etiquette, and an award for the dog-and-owner duo who collect the most rubbish. There’ll also be handy tips for keeping pups safe around toxic algae, alongside plenty of pats, photo moments, and tail wags.
