WITH WAI WANAKA Water flows through our rohe (region), sustaining everyone and everything. Water is life, and when it is safe and healthy, so are we. Right now, the health of local lakes and rivers are in decline, facing contamination from pollution and invasive introduced species. WAI Wānaka is a not-for-profit organisation, accelerating local action for freshwater to ensure healthy ecosystems and community wellbeing for future generations.

WAI are passionate about involving the community in citizen science, especially when it comes to freshwater research. There are a few ways of getting involved and making a difference: • Attend a ‘Get Your Feet Wet’ event where you will learn how to monitor key indicators of stream health. • Join a beach clean-up.

On Saturday, 24 January, between 1.00pm 3.00pm, WAI are having a beach clean-up and microplastic sampling at the Outlet. The aim? To help build a better picture of what is impacting local freshwater systems, as well as removing the rubbish from the whenua (land) that can end up in the waterways. It’s a chance to see citizen science in action. Come along to connect with nature, do good, and warm up with some tasty food and giveaways. All welcome! Just look for the WAI flags.
