The Otago Embroiderers’ Guild is this year celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Wanaka Embroidery School, which is held annually on the 3rd weekend in March at Mt Aspiring College. With this year being a special milestone, we are presenting an open Exhibition – ‘Life of Embroidery’ – featuring the complete lifetime work of our Founder, Gay Eaton M.N.Z.M. (Curated by Jan Wilson PGDip Textiles, M.A. Visual Arts, M.F.A.) This will be on display in the Armstrong Room, Lake Wanaka Centre, during the weekend of 15-16 March 2014.

In 1985, when Gay Eaton was both President of the Otago Guild and Southern Regional Education Officer for the Association of New Zealand Embroiderers’ Guilds, she had a vision of starting a weekend school bringing together New Zealand women to learn embroidery techniques and also enjoy one another’s company in the majestic surroundings of our Lakes District. This prestigious School has developed from six tutors (Jan Wilson being one of those originals) and 92 registrants in 1985, to twenty tutors and 296 registrants in 2014. Gay herself tutored on 23 occasions and chaired the organising committee for 25 years, setting in place a firm basis for the healthy future of embroidery in our region.

Well done to all the event organisers, volunteers and the public who made last weekend so successful. Police were busy dealing with the numbers that hit town, but with some good planning and help from event organisers things went pretty smoothly. Here’s a snapshot of the week that was... Police are looking for information relating to the driver of a red BMW 320i, registration NJ3080, who tried to evade police early on Sunday morning. The vehicle was abandoned at the end of Dublin Bay Road and we would like to hear from anyone who saw the vehicle last Saturday evening or Sunday morning. Two arrests were made over the weekend; a male from Invercargill for breaching the liquor ban and another male from Dunedin for throwing objects from his vehicle. Police also attended several crashes over the week - including a car rollover at Makarora on Sunday afternoon, a nose to tail on Saturday morning, and an intersection crash on Dungarvon St last Wednesday. :H DOVR GHDOW ZLWK WZR UHSRUWV RI VKRSOLIWHUV ODVW )ULGD\ DQG D ¿JKW domestic incident on Sunday morning. The burglary of a container and a portacom on Stevensons Rd was also reported to Police last Thursday. Numerous items were taken including several power tools. This week Police will be focusing on cyclists as part of our road safety campaign, with particular attention being paid to the use of cycle helmets and lights on bikes at night. Wanaka Police are looking at setting up a "community patrol" which would be staffed by volunteers working with Police on Friday and Saturday nights, as well as event weekends, to give us those extra "eyes and ears" in our crime prevention work. We would like to invite community minded people to a meeting at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Thursday 27th March at 7.00pm for a presentation from Community Patrols of NZ and a discussion about setting up our own community patrol here in Wanaka. (This will also cover Lake Hawea and surrounding areas). Local community patrols are a great initiative to keep our towns safe so if you feel this is you please come along.
