Hawea Playgroup Annual Winter Garage Sale Hawea Playgroup is based in the historic Post Office Building in Hawea Flat. We open three mornings a week and parents and children travel from far and wide to enjoy our friendly and cosy atmosphere. We have been refurbishing and playgroup has a fresh coat of paint, a new oven for baking during sessions and a new play kitchen for play dough creations! This year our annual Winter Garage Sale and Cafe will be held on Sunday 15th June in the Hawea Flat Hall on Camphill Road from 10am – 2pm. Funds raised will contribute to our running expenses and new play resources. The day will be MC’d by Anna van Riel and there will be a trapeze performance with Kim Coll of Aspiring Gymsports, live music and loads of wonderful entertainment for the kids. The Playgroup Cafe is being supported by The People’s Bread and will serve organic sourdough to accompany hot soup, homemade sausage rolls, Venus coffee, cakes and cookies.

With winter conditions having arrived, the focus of the local Police has changed slightly towards road safety and monitoring the behaviour of the large number of people arriving at Wanaka for the winter season. Already we have attended two accidents on Cardrona Valley Road, both on 1st June, near The Larches close to the Cardrona River. One vehicle ending up upside down on its roof and the other sliding off the icy road. There are at least three warning signs at both ends of that stretch of road, and we will ensure that the speed limit is reduced when the road becomes dangerous. On 2nd June Police attended a domestic incident at Hawea Flat, resulting in a male being charged with assault. It appears that further scams are popping up again and those with access to the internet should remember that 'if it sounds too good to be true, it’s probably a scam'. Passwords and account numbers should never be given out to anyone. On 8th June an Albert Town land owner reported sheep attacked by dogs overnight. Fortunately the dogs responsible were captured and taken to the pound. The matter is now being dealt with by the QLDC. On 8th June a 22 year old male visiting Wanaka was arrested on a number of outstanding warrants and appeared in the Queenstown District Court on Monday the 9th. On 9th June Police responded to a complaint that a telecom junction box and lighting pole on Mt Aspiring Road near Studholme Road had been damaged in a vehicle crash. At this stage the offending vehicle has not been located and enquiries are continuing. A male foreign national aged 40 years old was arrested on 9th June and charged with the burglary of the Cardrona Hotel. He is to appear in the Queenstown Court later this month. He may be asked to leave the country because of his stupidity. Finally a reminder to motorists that Wanaka Police will continue to focus on seatbelts, drivers using cell-phones, speed and intersections over the winter season.
