The 2nd GJ Gardner Northlake Junior Duathlon will take place on the 28th of March. Hosted by Braden Currie (World Multisport Champion and NZ Long Distance Triathlon champion). Braden along with his wife Sally organise this event as a fundraiser for the local schools with all proceeds going towards sports equipment. Last year $3000 was generated and donated to Hawea and Wanaka Primary. The event includes 3 age groups, 5-6 years, 7-8 years and 9-10years and includes a run, bike, run and slip and slide. The event was a huge success last year with 150 children participating. We hope to double this number this year and our target is a $5000 donation to schools. Every child will receive a medal and with the

help of Outside Sports and GJ Gardner, we are also able to give away 1 Specialized bike for a spot prize and a selection of Specialized helmets, bike gloves and New Balance shoes to our podium place getters. Registration is open now and entry forms are available from your school office or on the Northlake Junior Duathlon facebook page. Early bird entry is only $20. See you there and bring some extra coins as there’s a sausage sizzle, and a cake stall, coffee & ice-cream, as well as the Mitre 10 jumping castle for the little ones. Remember the Junior Challenge Wanaka is next weekend, a great opportunity to get a race under your belt so that you’re in prime condition when the 28th of March comes around. This past week has brought some chilly weather leading up to the long weekend. Even the snow made a brief appearance on the mountains. Police have continued this week to focus on speed around schools during drop off and pick up times. Drivers exceeding 50kmh inside the school zones can expect to be stopped and spoken to by Police. Also be aware of the school buses that are out and about picking up and dropping off children. You must reduce your speed to 20kmh past a stationary school bus. The camp grounds continue to empty out as holiday makers return to their normal routines. Police have been kept busy on the roads as the driving complaints ÀRZ WKURXJK WKLFN DQG IDVW <RX \RXUVHOYHV ZLWQHVV PRVW RI WKH bad driving out there. Continue to ring *555 with these complaints and we will endeavour to locate, stop and talk to as many of these drivers as possible. If you have a passenger with you at the time get them to record a video or take a photo using a cell phone to capture someone’s bad driving. This will help us in dealing with these complaints and deciding the right outcome. Two drivers were processed for drink driving this week. One driver was stopped on Ardmore Street and the other on Dungarvon Street. The drink driving toll for Wanaka for the New Year is already quite considerable. This is not a good sign and it shows some people are making poor decisions. A nose to tail crash occurred on Wanaka - Mount Aspiring Road where a car was unable to stop in time for a car turning in front. There was also a crash near Makarora where a vehicle pulled over to the side of the road and didn’t see a culvert. It didn’t end well with the vehicle hitting a rock and overturning. Thankfully there were no serious injuries sustained. We also received a report of a vehicle overtaking too close on State Highway 8A, causing the wing mirror of the passing vehicle to hit the driver’s arm that was resting on the open window.
