Page 1

13-14 March 2026

Set-up is well underway for the 89th Wānaka A&P Show, with Pembroke Park and the Wānaka Showgrounds a hive of activity as more than 150 volunteers and event crew bring the site to life.

While the public enjoys two full days of competition, trade and entertainment, months of planning have already taken place behind the scenes. Volunteer committees work year-round to coordinate equestrian, sheep, fleece, goat and cattle competitions, alongside dog trials, axemen and farrier events, educational hubs and more. In addition, more than 590 sites will combine to create a small city of traders.

Entries are now arriving for the Home Industry section, with bakers, gardeners, crafters, photographers and artists preparing their finest work for judging. Meanwhile, the region’s petsand their dedicated owners - will be preening and

prepping for the ever-popular Pet Parade and Petfirst Veterinary Jack Russell Race.

Life members are working alongside newer recruits, blending decades of experience with fresh energy as the countdown continues. The collaborative effort reflects the strong community spirit that underpins the show each year.

The Wānaka A&P Show remains one of the Upper Clutha’s largest annual events, with funds raised reinvested back into the local community. Selected paid and voluntary roles are still available, with more information at: wanakashow.co.nz/volunteer.

Albert Town residents invited to community AGM

Albert Town residents are invited to come along to the Albert Town Community Association’s (ATCA) Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, 18 March at The Albie Tavern from 7.00 – 8.00pm.

The AGM is a chance for locals to hear about the projects, events and initiatives that have helped bring the community together over the past year, and to find out what’s planned for the year ahead. The ATCA has been involved in a range of community activities designed to strengthen local connections and support a thriving neighbourhood. The AGM provides an opportunity for residents to meet the committee, hear a short update on recent work, and share ideas about future initiatives for Albert Town.

This year’s meeting will also include a short presentation from Fulton Hogan, who will outline the upcoming wastewater infrastructure works and explain how the project may affect Albert Town residents in the coming year.

The ATCA is also keen to welcome new members and committee volunteers who are interested in helping organise events and support local initiatives.

Everyone is welcome to attend, whether they’re new

Aspiring Conversations offers time for thinking

Wānaka will be bubbling with conversation, curiosity and connection from 27–29 March. The Aspiring Conversations festival brings together authors, politicians, musicians, journalists, theatremakers, and thinkers for a long weekend rich in ideas and kōrero. You’ll have conversations as awe-inspiring as the landscape.

With more than 30 speakers and performers across 12 events, there’s something for everyone, from big ideas about climate change, healthcare and Te Tiriti o Waitangi, to intimate experiences like SELENE, an immersive theatre performance. Festival favourites return alongside an exciting lineup including Green Party Co-Leader Chlöe Swarbrick, rally driver Emma Gilmour, journalist Miriama Kamo, Te Radar, Judge Carrie Wainwright, economist Shamubeel Eaqub, and Kaiwhakahaere Justin Tipa. Plus, there will be a tribute to the late poet Brian Turner ONZM and a panel of Gen Z activists.

The festival isn’t just about listening - it’s about connecting, socialising, and even a little indulging. Festivalgoers can grab a coffee or brunch at Federal Diner’s pop-up café and browse the Paper Plus book stall, where authors will be on hand for signings.

Whether you’re after bold ideas, playful debate or just time for thinking, Aspiring Conversations will be the place. Book your tickets now at aspiringconversations.co.nz

Arts on Tour brings stage production to Lake Hāwea

The Lake Hāwea Community Centre is proud to present Arts on Tour production - Prima Facie. Tessa Ensler loves her job. She's worked her way up from a working-class background to being a top criminal defence barrister - prosecuting, crossexamining and winning in the courtroom with her quick wit and intelligence. Fighting to defend those pleading not guilty - including securing freedom for men accused of rape and sexual assault.

Innocent until proven guilty is, after all, the bedrock of human rights.

An unexpected event forces Tessa to confront the very system she has spent her life believing and working within - a system where the lines of patriarchal power and burden of proof are not set up to accommodate the lived experience of sexual assault survivors.

Acclaimed Oliver and Tony award-winning play, Suzie Miller's Prima Facie is an unforgettable story

and one-woman tour de force. Directed by NZ acting royalty Michael Hurst and performed by Cassandra Woodhouse.

Arts on Tour receive funding from many organisations which allows them to bring these wonderful shows to heartland Aotearoa. We only pay a small fee. and any additional revenue made from ticket sales can be kept by the Lake Hāwea Community Centre to assist with general running and compliance costs.

Wānaka Primary School principal Rob Rush welcomed the programme.

The project aims to support children and their families at a crucial stage of learning, helping build strong foundations in reading, writing and early numeracy from the beginning of their school journey.

Rotary Club of Wānaka president Marie Fitchett said the initiative reflected Rotary’s commitment to supporting young people and strengthening communities.

“We are thrilled to be able to provide this new initiative for five-year-old children in the Upper Clutha region. Early literacy has a lifelong impact, and we hope these packs will give children and families

“Laying solid foundations in early literacy is the key to future learning success,” he said. “This is such a fantastic, proactive initiative and we are very grateful for the generosity of the Wānaka Rotary.”

During term one, Rotarians will visit local primary schools to deliver the packs and, where possible, read stories with students to help make the transition into school positive and encouraging.

Each pack includes a reading folder, story book, magnetic letters and numbers, a whiteboard, and a parent information booklet with ideas to support early literacy at home. The project has also received funding support from Rotary District.

Ripe to celebrate its 5th birthday

Ripe – The Wanaka Wine & Food Festival is set to return for its 5th birthday on Saturday, 21 March 2026, bringing together the very best of Central Otago’s wine, food, and live music. Festival-goers are in for a treat, with New Zealand music legend Sir Dave Dobbyn announced as the headline act, performing lakeside at the stunning Glendhu Bay.

Building on its reputation as one of New Zealand’s premier food and wine festivals, Ripe also continues to innovate and expand its programme of experiences. 2025 saw the introduction of ‘Wine Walks’ where local hosts take groups to meet with producers and get to discover more detail behind the wines they are drinking. For 2026, the Ripe team has added even more value, bringing back some old favourites, and introducing some new, elevated experiences.

Festival Director Nathan White says the response to ticket sales this year shows how much people love the Ripe experience.

“ We’ve always aimed to create something truly special for Wanaka –a celebration of local food, wine, and music in one of the most beautiful places in New Zealand. The response this year has been phenomenal, and we’re excited to welcome everyone back for what will be our biggest Ripe yet.”

Agri Exchange to grow at this year’s Show

The 2026 Gallaway Cook Allan Agri Exchange will take central stage on Friday, 13 March and Saturday, 14 March as part of the Wānaka A&P Show, bringing together farmers, rural professionals, innovators and industry leaders to explore the future of agriculture.

What began as a single event at the inaugural Gallaway Cook Allan Agri Exchange last year has grown into a six-event programme within the Show. This growth reflects strong sector interest and highlights the value of creating space for meaningful conversations, collaboration and connection across the rural sector.

Positioned as a dynamic hub within the Show, the Gallaway Cook Allan Agri Exchange will focus on practical solutions and forwardthinking ideas, with an emphasis on sustainability, leadership and innovation. The expanded programme is designed to encourage deeper engagement and robust discussion over the two days.

The event series will include the Gallaway Cook Allan Leaders Breakfast, a Farmers Focus session hosted by Beef + Lamb New Zealand, the AGMARDT Innovators Drinks, and the Bridging the Urban Gap forum. Together, these events will bring a wide range of perspectives

to the table, fostering collaboration between farmers, agribusiness, researchers and the wider community.

A strong line-up of exhibitors will showcase the breadth of innovation emerging from rural New Zealand. Exhibitors will include AIMER Farming with AI-driven pasture management technology, Nature Point with satellite-based soil organic carbon insights, and Romene, transforming wool and milk into premium skincare products. MyNativeForest will highlight voluntary carbon forestry opportunities, while ReFlow will present next-generation effluent management systems. The Fairlight Foundation will focus on women in leadership and workforce development, alongside platforms such as The Common Ground and Ag Assist, which support sector-wide resilience and connection.

Through exhibitor displays, networking opportunities and a curated programme of discussions, the 2026 Gallaway Cook Allan Agri Exchange will provide farmers and visitors with practical tools, fresh ideas and valuable connections, reinforcing its role as a forwardlooking forum for New Zealand agriculture.

Friday, 13 March to Saturday, 14 March.

Where the River Meets Home: A Lifestyle Without Equal

ALBERT TOWN 63 Kingston Street

Value is often measured in square metres, but here it’s measured in moments.

Offered for only the second time in its history, this home is defined by its generous proportions and “choose your own adventure” layout. Set on a large, flat section with mature trees and established hedge, 6 plus car off street parking, minutes from the Clutha river edges, walk/bike run tracks, views to Mt Maude, plus under 10 minutes walk to Albert Town amenities. Whether you are looking for a quintessential family home, a high-performing investment, a holiday retreat, or a strategic site for a future build, this location is envied for a reason. The test is simple: Walk to the river bank, hear the water, and feel the peace. If ‘lifestyle goals’ are on your list, consider them ticked.

Building on the land: Why local knowledge makes all the difference

There’s something deeply satisfying about standing on your own rural block and picturing the home that will one day sit there. The outlook. The space. The connection to the land around you. Anyone who has tried to build rurally in Otago will tell you the same thing. It is not like building in town.

That is a reality Greg and Anna Sinnott know well, not just professionally but personally. As the couple behind Sentinel Homes Central Otago, and having lived rurally themselves, they understand what their clients are actually asking for when they talk about a home that works on the land. It is about more than just a floor plan. It is about water supply and access tracks, prevailing winds and site drainage, the orientation of the sun in winter, and the sweep of the view in summer.

“Every rural site is unique,” says Greg. “No two blocks are the same. That is exactly why we offer on-site

consultations. We want to see your land, understand your vision, and have a real conversation about what is possible.”

Sentinel Homes has built extensively across Otago’s rural landscape, from the wide golden basins of Central Otago to the coastal hills near Dunedin. That breadth of experience translates into practical knowledge that benefits every client. With dedicated teams based in both Central Otago and Dunedin, they are well placed to support builds across the entire region, including remote sites.

For those with a clear vision, Sentinel can work from a fully custom design. For those who want a proven starting point, Sentinel Homes offers hundreds of plans on their website. Each plan can be tailored to suit specific site conditions, family needs, or personal style. It is a flexible approach that puts the client at the

centre of the process from day one.

Whether you have already secured a section or are still working through the details, the best first step is a conversation. Greg and Anna offer no-pressure on-site consultations to help you understand what building on your block could look like, practically, financially, and creatively.

If you have been thinking about building on your rural block, there has never been a better time to start that conversation.
