On 19-21 February, Wānaka will host the 20th edition of Challenge Wānaka, now one of world’s most iconic triathlons. From its modest beginnings in 2007, where 85 individuals stood on the start line, the event has grown into a celebration of sport, community, and breathtaking scenery, attracting athletes the world over, local competitors, and thousands of young participants.
The festival features the Gallagher Insurance Challenge Wānaka Half, a 1.9km swim, 90km bike, and 21.1km run, alongside Aquabike and team events. This year, more than 800 competitors, including 24 professionals from New Zealand and abroad, will take on the challenge on Saturday, while over 2,100 children from preschool to
secondary school races will experience the thrill of crossing the finish line.
The festival isn’t just for athletes. Families, friends, volunteers, and spectators are all invited to be part of the action – cheering on competitors, helping out behind the scenes, or enjoying the festival atmosphere lakeside. Past champions and local legends, alongside rising stars, will be part of festivities.
Some roads around Wānaka will be temporarily closed during the weekend. Check times and maps at challenge-wanaka.com to plan ahead. The festival is a celebration for the whole community. Join in and help make this 20-year milestone unforgettable.

Onstage Wānaka is inviting performers to audition for That Bloody Woman, a sharp, witty and thoughtprovoking New Zealand musical/play by Luke Di Somma and Gregory Cooper.
Auditions will take place on Saturday, 28 February and Sunday, 1 March, with opportunities available for performers 18 years+ of all experience levels. The play offers a bold and humorous re-imagining of the women’s suffrage movement, bringing together Kate Sheppard and a group of unexpected allies in a fast-paced theatrical celebration of activism and change.
The production will be led by an experienced creative team, with Lisa Clough as Director, Graeme Perkins as Musical Director, Nina Hermanns as Choreographer and Hannah Gillespe as Assistant Choreographer. Together, they bring a wealth of experience to this dynamic and engaging work.
Those interested in auditioning are encouraged to attend a pre-audition information evening on Wednesday, 19 February at 7.00pm, held in the Faulks Room at the Lake Wānaka Centre. The session will cover audition expectations, character information and rehearsal commitments.

Wastebusters Repair Revolution returns
The Wastebusters Repair Revolution returns on Sunday, 15 February, from 10.00am to 2.00pm at the Wānaka Community Workshop, offering free repairs and practical advice for the community.
Locals are encouraged to bring their broken treasures along to be repaired by a team of dedicated volunteer fixers who generously share their time and skills. Event coordinator Abigail Hurford-Abel says the repairers are central to the success of the day. “Our volunteers are absolutely epic,” she says. “They turn up with their toolkits, their knowledge and a real willingness to help. They’re generous with their time, are happy to explain how repairs work, and they create a positive, practical atmosphere throughout the day.”
Items you can bring along include clothing needing repair (such as items with holes or broken zips), wobbly chairs or small furniture, and household items or bric-a-brac in need of a little TLC.
The event is free to attend and no bookings are required. People are welcome to arrive at any point during the day, with mornings usually the quietest.

Local youth are being invited to take part in PULSE, a fitness programme delivered by Kāhu Youth, designed to support both physical wellbeing and personal growth. Running from Wednesday, 25 February to Friday, 27 March, PULSE offers two earlymorning sessions each week. The programme is free and open primarily to Year 9 and 10 students.
PULSE has been designed to help young people build resilience, confidence, and positive relationships. Each session is led by a different community group or partner, ensuring no two mornings are the same. Youth will have the opportunity to train and engage with organisations such as the Wānaka Police, Wānaka Fire Brigade, Andrew King, and many more.
Every session has its own theme and focus, combining fun, physical challenges, teamwork, and learning. After each workout, participants enjoy a nutritious breakfast, before being dropped off to
start the school day at Mount Aspiring College. Youth can expect to gain education around nutrition, develop self-esteem and resilience, and strengthen their teamwork skills. The programme also supports mental health and wellbeing, improves physical fitness and strength, and helps young people feel a strong sense of belonging within a supportive team environment.
Spaces are limited, and families are encouraged to register early.
