Wanaka Genealogy Group has a new format for meetings. We are moving away from topic-based monthly meetings to more specific interest groups, research sessions and social catch ups. Social Meetings: There will be 4 social meetings per year February, May (A.G.M. Topic DNA), August (family history month) and November (end of year celebration). Find out all about it at our first Social Meeting on Friday 12 February 2016 at 3-5pm in The Meeting Room, Wanaka Hotel, 71 Ardmore Street (gold coin donation) Topic: “Choosing an Interest Group.” Refreshments available. Interest groups: Scottish, Irish, local history, record keeping & writing,

computers. Each will have a group leader but the subject matter will be driven by what the group wants. Meeting times and dates will be decided by the group members. Researchers Meetings: These will be for people actively researching an ancestor/ family. Bring a name and any information you have to this meeting. This group is ideal for beginners although there will be some more experienced members around who can assist you. Bring your own laptop/tablet or use the Library computers. Following on from a busy Christmas holiday period, it appears that town in not slowing down. Maybe this is the new normal. I have certainly noticed the reduction in the so-called shoulder seasons with what appears to be a steady increase in visitors and new residents alike. In relation to visitors and driving, I have been speaking to many people in town about driving issues and complaints relating mainly to tourist drivers. This is something that nationally and locally we are trying hard WR DGGUHVV DV WKH ULVN WR DOO RI XV LV VLJQL¿FDQW Driving complaints on our highways are our greatest call for service these days. A key message here is to stay alert when driving, even if just popping LQWR WRZQ $ OHIW ÀDVKLQJ LQGLFDWRU OLJKW GRHV QRW DOZD\V PHDQ WKH FDU LV turning left. A stop sign, to some, does not always mean they are going to stop. Drive defensively, respect other road users and above all else take a deep breath and be patient. It’s a much better approach for both your blood pressure and disposition when you see some confused tourist trying to make sense of our road signs and roundabouts, etc. We would probably be the same in their country. Chinese New Year is upon us this week so expect to see a lot more tourists around town and on our arterial routes. An area to be particularly mindful of is the Glendhu Bay Road. The surface beyond the fog line is not very wide at the best of times and over the summer, the surface has broken up - encroaching into the PDLQ URDGLQJ ODQH LQ SDUWV :LWK KLJK WUDI¿F YROXPHV RQ WKH URDG parking at Roy’s Peak carpark spilling out onto the roadway, boat trailers and cyclists all trying to share this section of road, we all need to slow down and take special care in this area. Another key reminder while on roading, is about sharing the road. Cyclists don’t ride two a breast just because you can!!! When it’s safe and there is good visibility for cars and passing by all means, but make it safer for you and the good name of other cyclists and go back into VLQJOH ¿OH ZKHQ DSSURSULDWH )RU WKH YHKLFOH GULYHUV DJDLQ EH SDWLHQW slow down and don’t pass if it’s not safe. Keep a good distance between you and the cyclist when passing as they have the same rights to use the road as a motorised vehicle. Share the road, share the love. So, with the Challenge Wanaka triathlon, A&P Show, Warbirds and the Contact Epic mountain bike race all still to come, I imagine our roads and town will continue to be a busy place. The good news is that we caught two drunk drivers this weekend, taking them off the roads for some time. The bad news is that one blew 884mgm’s - over twice the limit, and the other blew 1648 mgm’s. So being alert on our roads for other road users not doing what you expect could be the big difference between a safe trip home, or an untimely crash at best.
