PET THERAPY PROGRAMME MAKES A WELCOME RETURN

Community Link seeking volunteer dog owners (and their furry friends). The Upper Clutha’s much‑loved Pet Therapy programme is making a welcome return and growing. It’s generating excitement from schools, libraries and seniors’ accommodation across the region. Since April, Community Link has been working behind the scenes to relaunch the outreach initiative, previously run by St John, which connects volunteer dog owners and their friendly companions with people who benefit from a little extra warmth and connection. The programme brings gentle, sociable dogs into community spaces where they offer more than just a wagging tail – they boost mood, encourage communication, and even support learning. There is growing anticipation in Hāwea, where interest in visits is high. Now, the call is out for more volunteers
to help meet demand. Community Link is hoping to welcome at least eight new volunteers from across the region.

Pet therapy visits are simple but powerful; time spent with a dog often brightens the day and, somehow, helps us all feel a little more human.
