Schools across the Queenstown Lakes District are gearing up to learn more about their greenhouse gas emissions as they prepare for the first Climate Action Initiative (CAI) workshop later this month. The programme, started by community not-for-profit Wao Aoteoroa, aims to give local businesses and schools the knowledge and tools to calculate their greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and take action to reduce them. Wao Aotearoa board member Arna Craig says the end goal is to foster a sustainable community. “By supporting local schools through this programme, we are not only fostering change, but giving each school the tools and knowledge to lead a new generation,” said Craig.

The CAI is split into two phases and spans 12 weeks. The initial phase ‘Calculate for Climate’ is to set the overall context, gather data, get their GHG number, followed by ‘Fast Track to Neutral’ phase featuring a series of workshops and resources to help schools work through emission reduction strategies and develop their own reduction response plan.

Olivia Bonifant, program manager for CAI says educators are excited to get involved. “Government agencies are already obligated to start reporting on and making reductions on their GHG, and while schools are not yet required, this programme is a great way to get a head start,” Bonifant says. The Wanaka workshop will be held on 24 Feb at the Wanaka Community Hub. Queenstown will take place on 22 Feb at the new primary school, Te Kura Whakatipu o Kawarau. Hello again everyone, I hope you have enjoyed watching our local legends do there thing on the slopes of Beijing over the past week. It comes as no surprise that COVID has reached our slice of paradise with several locations of interest. Please continue to do your bit to help keep our community safe. Scanning, mask wearing and getting tested if you develop symptoms. Here is a bit of what has been going on the past week. Early in the week whilst an Officer was surveying the land out the station window, much like Simba and Mufasa did in the Lion King, a vehicle collision occurred. One vehicle failed to give way causing minor damage. Once the exchange of details was completed one driver received an infringement notice for Failing to Give Way. There were several vehicle crashes between bridges two and six in the Crown Range. These corners are notorious for having vehicles come a cropper when drivers take them too fast. Throw in some precipitation and it is a recipe for disaster. Recommended speed signs are there for a reason. Police attended several Family Harm episodes throughout the week. Please engage with local services if you are finding things tough at home. Officers assisted Queenstown units after a vehicle failed to remain stopped and began heading towards Wanaka. Wanaka Police set up a cordon on the top of the Crown Range. The driver thought better of it and decided to head towards Cromwell where it was eventually stopped with out any issues. Police assisted noise control to uplift a stereo from a Wanaka address. There were no other issues reported after the stereo was removed. We continue to set up checkpoints around the place and continue to be disappointed by the amount of drivers who push the envelope around drink driving. We will continue to reinforce the message that we don’t want people on our roads who are under the influence. Now we are back in school many senior students are driving. Remember your obligations of your restricted licence. Caught three times with passengers and you will find yourself biking or walking to school for three months. On Saturday Police were involved in a Search and Rescue to locate a party of two who were overdue in the Mount Aspiring National Park. An estimated 11-hour trip turned into a 19-hour journey. Thankfully the pair came out uninjured albeit very tired. Comfort was taken from worried family members that the pair had hired a PLB from the local DOC centre. On Sunday Police stopped a driver who looked to be on their phone. Once stopped it was apparent the driver had been drinking. He was processed and found to be more than twice the limit. He is off to court. Have a great week everyone.

Disc golf breeds obsessive types of people. The strange curves and floatation of the spinning discs encourage discgolfers to seek out new terrain in strange places. This obsession with curves and undulations led mates to patches of ground that no right-minded folk would find a lot of value in. Down where the Cardrona burbles into the determined Clutha/ Mata-au, there was a patch of scrappy gravel and sand amongst the crack willows and disused forts and teepees. Tall poplars

But in amongst the mess were some nice lines to propel discs. It was tangled and rudimentary at first, but became clearer with manual labour. Redesign followed redesign improving it more and more. Every change required a new fight against dead-fall and hardy immigrant annuals: thistle, hemlock, nettle. And now and again a crack willow would drop a great log across our intended lines. Passers-by enjoyed the new tracks and trails. They appreciated the determination to confront the pest plants and make something of the area. Once we had

Fox and Jynx, Teka and Po, Valen, Prairie, Knox, and Nellie Oneill are just some of the kittens that will be fostered with Cat Rescue Wanaka (CRW) this season. All stray-born, these kittens have been given a fresh start in life by kind people that stopped to help and CRW, a group which aims to reduce the local stray cat population. Prairie got herself locked in a garage; Knox was on the road near Luggate, presumed dead; tiny Valen was found by a mountain biker at Glendhu Bay. Dedicated fosterers welcomed these waifs into their homes and put in time and TLC to socialise and prepare them for adoption. Two of last season’s kittens are still looking
