Now more than ever, it’s important to encourage our local community and regional visitors to support local, try something new and sample the epic experiences that Wānaka has to offer. Have You Ever? aims to do just that. The latest Lake Wānaka Tourism campaign is prompting locals and visitors to think about activities, stays, dining and other experiences that they’ve yet to tick off their bucket lists and inspire them to try something they’ve never done before in Wānaka. Combined with social media promotion, Lake Wānaka Tourism has partnered for the first time with several Wanaka businesses and building owners to install street posters, featuring beautiful work from some of our favourite photographers. These street posters

are due to be installed this week at Helwick and Warren Street locations, as well as in the Precinct. Tim Barke, General Manager Lake Wānaka Tourism says, "the benefits are two-fold; raising the profiles and awareness of all the incredible experiences on offer, as well as providing a platform to showcase some stunning imagery." “This is the year to start ticking off some of those experiences you’ve always dreamt about doing, to support local, and get out to enjoy this beautiful place we get to call home.” The campaign will run from this week until the end of April, with street posters being safely removed from walls on completion. Businesses and building owners are advised to contact Lake Wānaka Tourism should they wish to support local, join the campaign and volunteer wall space for additional poster installations.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Helping ‘Snappers’ become photographers sophisticated photo device means that most of us carry a camera at all times. Wanaka Camera Club has a membership of around 60, the Club’s aim is simple – helping improve the skills of anyone interested in photography and welcomes anyone, irrespective of photographic ability. It is a friendly, relaxed club who meet on the second Monday of each month (next meeting 12 April) at St John Rooms, Link Way. Taking photos is a part of our life, whether family snaps or holiday pictures we all love to record memorable moments to share with others. Modern cameras make this easy and the huge development of iPhones into a

The first part of the evening is focused on viewing members photographs entered in the Club’s monthly competition. After a break for tea and a ‘natter’, the second part is dedicated to helping members learn more about photography.

A celebration of community growers and local food Wānaka will once again celebrate the Autumn Harvest on 10 and 11 April as part of Local Food Month. Hosted out at the beautiful Rippon Hall, the community are invited to come together for a weekend of festivities making use of and reducing food waste by preserving surplus produce, and sharing in a multi-course long lunch. The 7th Apple Drive will be held on Saturday, 11 April with Local Food Wānaka hosting a communal chutney making session, as well as fresh juice pressing. Attendees are asked to bring their surplus fruit, a sharp knife, a chopping board, small jars and 1-2 litre bottles for juice and

Following the Apple Drive, on Sunday the Long Lunch is a day to enjoy a celebration of local food, community growers and the harvest’s bounty. All food will be locally donated by the Wānaka community and will be transformed into a delicious, multi-course lunch cooked by some of Wānaka’s top chefs. Guest speakers (local food champions) will talk about why, how and what we eat is so important. join the communal activities. No tickets are required for the Apple Drive, but a $5 donation is greatly appreciated to help cover costs.

Transporting our community We are excited to announce the purchase of Wanaka’s community van. Quentin Landreth from First National Wanaka is always keen to support our community and with this in mind, he spotted a need for a community van that anyone can have access to.

We are so delighted with the response from the community. To date, the team at M!NT Charitable Trust have already used the van multiple times to pick up their members and transport them to the many activities that M!NT offers. The kids love it and so do the volunteers.

If you need to transport your club or charity to an event or activity, the 12 seater community van is available for free. All you need to do is pay for the fuel used, make sure that the driver is over 25 years old and return to us in a clean and tidy state.

This month I want to talk about what to do in the event of a ﬁre. Firstly, the best thing you can do is install smoke alarms and check them regularly to ensure they are working. Talk about escape plans. Whether it is with family or ﬂatmates you should know how to get out in an emergency and practice it. Within a short time of a fire breaking out visibility will be near zero due to the smoke so be prepared for this. Do not leave unnecessary electrical appliances or chargers plugged in. Within the last two years the brigade has been to two substantial structure fires which were attributed to leaving Lithium Ion drill batteries charging overnight which overheated and started the fire. March 2021 the brigade has attended the following callouts: • 3 structure fires • 1 medical emergency • 4 false alarms

This month the brigade attended a large structure fire on Totara Terrace. It was excellent work by all involved to get it under control and stop it from spreading to other nearby houses. I would also like to thank the Firefighters from The Lake Hawea Brigade, Luggate Brigade and the Command Unit from the Alexandra Brigade who all turned out to help.

On Monday a driver well exceeded the 100 demerits they’re allowed to have and lost their licence for 3 months. A trespass was also served on an individual, and we helped out someone in need of a bit of a hand up.

Tuesday, a drink driver was nabbed in the wee small hours in Hawea. A fairly high reading was obtained and they’re off to court.

Wednesday was a busy one. A situation required some mediation from us. A cow with attitude was wrangled back into its paddock by one of the coppers. These are two separate incidents and the cow did not require our mediation. Our assistance was required for a mental health matter later in the day. On Thursday a report was taken of a ‘misplaced’ portable speaker from a building site, and we helped a young person find their way home. Friday saw a lot of people coming into town for Wheels and the Jetsprints. A mental health incident was attended. A drink driver was caught from a checkpoint. On Saturday a report was taken of a stolen car taken for a joyride, crashed and then returned. Don’t leave car keys in the car. A search and rescue operation was undertaken, but the subjects managed to walk out themselves thankfully. They were prepared well and did everything they were supposed to. There was another drink driver captured. Sunday was a bit quieter. A cow took a tumble off a cliff near Treble Cone and did not survive. We attended five incidents of family harm this week. There is a bit of property at the station that we would love to reunite with the rightful owners: •
