The Waste Free Fair is back!

The Waste Free Fair is back for its third year. After last yearâ€™s popular event, Wastebusters and Plastic Free Wanaka are once again co-hosting an afternoon of zero waste inspiration on Saturday, 18 July at the Lake Wanaka Centre. The Fair is held in the middle of Plastic Free July, when people all over the world are choosing to refuse or reduce single-use plastics. There will be plenty of solutions for those who want to cut plastic waste out of their lives at home, at work, and even on the building site. As well as a variety of products for sale, there will be prizes, bulk bins, tasty food, and a guide to local waste free shopping. You can participate in beeswax wraps demonstrations and learn the Japanese folding art of Furoshiki. You can also see how to make produce bags out of curtains!

Chat with vendors and zero waste practitioners about ways to upcycle, reuse and reduce our waste. You can also follow Wastebusters and Plastic Free Wanaka on Instagram and Facebook for tips and inspiration through the month. For more family fun earlier in the day, come along to the Waste Free Wanda Singalong, also at the Lake Wanaka Centre from 11am to 12pm. Join Wanda for some interactive songs, dancing and inspiration; learn how we can combat single use plastic and protect our environment. Tickets are $5 for the whole family. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Skirt Tales The Sequel It has been a long two years but ﬁnally The Wanaka Women’s Suﬀrage Committee are excited to see their vision and hard work come to fruition, in their new book ‘Skirt Tales The Sequel’, Life Stories of 80 Women of The Upper Clutha.’ Back in 1993 this committee began collecting stories from women and their families in The Upper Clutha. This was part of the Centennial Celebrations of Women’s Suffrage in New Zealand, organised by Liz Hall for QLDC. The idea for this collection was that of local woman, Mrs Phyllis Aspinall. Two years later ‘Skirt Tales, 100 Stories of Women of The Upper Clutha’ was published. This book tells the stories of many of the first women to live in our local area, through to the mid twentieth century and is now in its third edition. In 2018 while celebrating the 125th anniversary of New Zealand Women’s Suffrage, the committee of five women decided it was

time to publish a sequel and continue the story of local women. These stories are a sample from a larger group of women, many of whom lived through times of adversity, isolation, or poverty, and even prejudice, but who have dug deep to look after their families, have given freely to their community, and enriched their own lives. Many have had wonderful adventures, explored new careers and achieved highly in their chosen fields. There is a strong feeling of community and what this means. Through these stories much of the social history of The Upper Clutha in the last part of the twentieth century and early this century is revealed. School holidays and town is busy, the ski fields are busy, the roads are busy, the sports fields have been busy, and the weather has been a mixture of good and bad. Our working week started late on Tuesday the 7th with a minor vehicle accident in town which resulted in a driver located at Lake Hawea having almost twice the legal alcohol limit. Damage to the toilet block at the Dinosaur Park was reported by QLDC staff on the morning of the 8th. We are searching the CCTV footage to identify the offender. On the 9th, Police arrested a local male for causing damage to a vehicle the previous week. A local male was also processed for drink-driving in town that evening. Police wish to remind motorists using Ballantyne Road that the 50km/hr zone extends all the way to Riverbank Road, the education phase is about to be replaced by the infringement phase. The speed limit was reduced to limit the number of motor accidents and this has so far worked. On Friday, Police attended an incident on the road up to the Snow Farm where four vehicles came to grief in the icy conditions. Thanks to staff on the mountain that helped outall involved got down the mountain without further drama. Tip of the Week- If you loan a vehicle to friends intending to travel up to the snow, show them how to put it into 4WD. Friday night in town was very busy around the bars and the response this week from bar staff and patrons was very good. That night Police attended a domestic incident in Albert Town and have followed that up with some advice to ensure a happy outcome. A loud party in Meadowstone was reported to Noise Control at the QLDC on Friday night, the noise ending at about 2am. Ring Noise Control (QLDC) in the first instance, and if no joy then call Police and we can pay a visit to the venue. It is unacceptable to keep your neighbours awake. On Saturday evening two locals were processed for drinkdriving, and a male was taken to his own home after he mistakenly walked onto his neighbours’ property due to his inebriation. On Sunday the CBD was swamped by visitors due to the poor weather. Police attended a driving complaint at the Upper Clutha Rugby Club grounds where a 4WD vehicle was ripping up the carpark area. A vehicle was impounded and the driver is facing a loss of licence. A reminder to motorists to keep to 50km/hr on Ballantyne Road, defrost all of your vehicle’s windows before you leave home to go skiing, and drive to the conditions at all times. Have a safe week.
