Earlybird ticket and program release for The Wao Summit 2021 opens Tuesday, 27 July. The fourth annual Wao Summit is ready to launch early bird ticket sales on 27 July. The Summit, founded in 2018, has hosted over 60 events in the last three years, with over 3,000 participants in both Wānaka and Queenstown. Its mission is to inspire, educate and enable communities to accelerate towards a carbon zero, regenerative future and beyond. "With initiatives such as SUCFree Wānaka, zero waste building workshops and the Wānaka Community Workshop being sparked or launched from previous summits, we're looking forward to seeing what will come out of this one!" said Monique Kelly, Program Director. Bringing in groups and individuals from around the country, “the emphasis of this year will be on the cross-pollination of ideas, actions and initiatives to support and accelerate change from the grassroots up” Kelly says.

This year the group anticipates a surge of attendance, both locally and nationally, from grassroots organisations to businesses, groups and individuals, and looks to strengthen Wānaka’s standing as a place of learning. A staggering 40+ events are planned for the week, with a wide range of focus to enable diversity and inclusivity, and an emphasis on workshops so that attendees take away the tools they need to create positive change. This year Wao will be releasing a special 'Your Future Pass' which will give ticket buyers access to a number of talks, workshops, tours and films at a discounted rate, as well as an extensive youth program which will be run in collaboration with the local schools. Kelly says “our mission is to enable change at all levels of the community, from zero to 99 years, and to do that we need to make our events as relevant and accessible as possible.”

There have been a number of vehicle crashes on our roads this week. We ask that you take extra care out there, especially in the early hours as the roads are icy and very dangerous. Please allow yourselves an extra few minutes in the mornings so that your travels are safe. Pay extra attention to the road signs as these are there to help you be safe and negotiate our roads. Police intercepted a drink driver over the weekend who was seen by a member of the public swerving all over the road, mounting the footpaths and centre pedestrian islands, turning in to carparks thinking they were streets and travelling in excess of the posted speed limit. Police subsequently processed the drink driver who returned an extremely high alcohol result. Police also responded to a traffic complaint on Cardrona Valley Road where the driver was located and processed for drink driving and returned a positive result for alcohol.

I will take this time to remind you all of the importance to lock up your houses. Police were called to an address in the early hours of the morning when a homeowner awoke to find an unknown person inside their house and asleep on their couch. The person had kindly removed their footwear and socks at the door before walking through the kitchen area to the lounge where they removed their trousers and tucked themselves in between the pillows on the homeowner’s couch. The homeowner got a horrible fright to find an unknow person inside their house. Upon Police arrival the person found was horrified to be told they were at the wrong address and were extremely apologetic. A reminder to all to keep your Eftpos, Debit and Credit Cards safe at all times. There has been a spike in unwanted people getting Eftpos, Debit or Credit Card details, then having a big spend up leaving victims with a large debt. Please don’t give out your card details and if it looks and feels dodgy, then it is. This is particularly important with online shopping. To finish off I would like to draw everyone’s attention to road safety and driver behaviour. Please ensure you abstain from using your cell phone whilst driving, always wear your seatbelt, drive to the conditions and speed limit, don’t drink or take drugs and drive, and comply with the conditions of your driver’s licence.

Come and enjoy the company of George the Quiz Master for a Christmas themed quiz at Edgewater Resort from 6.30pm for a 7.00pm start on Wednesday, 28 July. Funds raised are for the 50 (Alexandra) Squadron Air Cadets to help subsidise camp

costs, equipment and uniform items. There will be prizes up for grabs kindly donated by local supporting businesses.

The Air Cadets are the aviation arm of the NZ Cadet Force and are aligned with the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF). Our local Air Training Corps is based in Clyde and has cadets aged 13-18 from the surrounding towns, who attend parade night every Thursday from 6.30 - 9.00pm during school terms. It is run by a committed team of volunteer cadet officers and support staff.

Friendships are created across the region and the spirit of adventure and teamwork is fostered. They also take great pride in their service roles within the community, volunteering at Warbirds Over Wanaka and being part of the ANZAC parades in Clyde and Alexandra.

Becoming a cadet has lots of benefits for our young teens. They enjoy being part of a squadron of like minded people who work together as a team. Acquiring new skills from classroom theories of bushcraft/survival,

Whether you are an older person, a service provider, or just someone who would like to know more, this free, casual networking session offers a chance to meet others and turn ideas into action. LINK has lined up local organisations to share what they are doing – anchoring the conversation which everyone can contribute to. Confirmed speakers include: • Marie Roxburgh from Age Concern Otago, presenting on the support services she coordinates and the Alexandra Community House/Central Otago District Council-led ‘Next Chapter’ survey of older people in the Alexandra Basin.

Meditation and mindfulness in Wanaka Geshe-la was born in Tibet and studied for over twenty years at Sera Je Monastery in South India, where he graduated with a Geshe degree (equivalent to a Buddhist PhD). He has been teaching in New Zealand for almost ten years and has made trips down to Wanaka previously. Geshe-la will host two events in Wanaka at St. John Wanaka (4 Link Way).

Geshe Jampa Tharchin, a Tibetan Buddhist Monk and the resident teacher at Chandrakirti Meditation Center in Nelson, will be visiting Wanaka at the end of July for a public teaching and workshop on mediation and mindfulness.
