Promoting ‘help-thinking behaviour’ in Wanaka - localising a national campaign. A Wanaka based mental health and well-being advocate is localising a well-known national mental health campaign, with the aim of encouraging people in the Wanaka Central Lakes area to know help is available if they need it and to normalise reaching out for help. Karyn Munro, Wanaka based Suicide Prevention Coordinator with WellSouth Primary Health Network, says the project she’s coordinating adds images of local residents to posters promoting the national free counselling service 1737. In addition to raising the profile of the service locally, her aim is to make it relatable, accessible and relevant to the local community, and to reach groups who might not ordinarily think to ask for help. Karyn says “The idea is to raise awareness of and encourage people to take up ‘help-

thinking behaviour. Asking for help can be new to many people. Using local people brings home the message that people who might want to talk or need a little extra help are our friends and neighbours.” Localising the 1737 campaign is part of a shared approach to coordinating mental health and wellbeing services and support in Central Lakes, led by the Central Lakes Well-Being Recovery Group. Adell Cox, Southern DHB’s Allied Health Director for Mental Health says the plan is to extend this 1737 localised promotion across Queenstown and Central Otago. The Central Lakes Wellbeing Recovery Group hopes the use of local people for the 1737 posters helps make the images relatable to people in our community and underlies the message that 1737 is a resource for anyone in need.

Normally the Crime Line is done by one of the Sunday late shift members, but they were too busy. So, it’s Monday after the morning tea break and I am typing it out now. How wonderful modern technology is. I had to laugh as well, as I have done the radio broadcast on Radio Wanaka and I listened to it. The sound of your voice changes to someone that you just wouldn’t recognise. Strange that. But…not as strange as the week we have had in Wanaka. Things have moved from where we were just a sleepy town with a couple of odd matters to deal with. Now we have people stealing red light traffic cameras, shooting at the lights and going through red lights. The State Highway from Wanaka to Haast is on occasion busy, then without notice it is very quiet, so quiet that only a mouse can be heard. But where travellers are thinking the classic Kiwi train of thought. The ‘Yeah…Na” one, the thing that gets us into trouble.

The first lane, nearest to you is where you are to drive into, not the middle, that’s for straight through vehicles from Luggate. If you are going down Riverbank Road, please turn right into the nearest lane and then move across to the turning lane to turn left. E-bike stolen from Beech Road over the last couple of weeks. Cyclists, wear your helmet. Put lights on front and back. A mate of mine in Christchurch had his wife knocked of her bike, not on purpose though. She took over three years and many surgeries to get back to work. Please make yourself visible. Some youths in Albert Town are coming to the notice of Police, know where your young ones are! Snow will come they keep saying. This will bring hundreds if not thousands of people. The town will thrive, people will spend money and folks will be grateful for the snow-sports that will be had.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Award-winning play will raise funds for mental health support Wānaka playwright and performer Michael Metzger takes to the stage next week to perform his one-man show The Changing Shed as a fundraiser for Community Networks’ mental health support fund. The Changing Shed premiered at Dunedin Fringe in March where it won the award for best theatre. Kim Parry, who is helping produce the Wānaka season, describes it as “moving, powerful and thought provoking”. The Changing Shed depicts Michael’s experience growing up gay in rural Otago in the 1970s. He says Community Networks’ work in mental health is a good fit with the

play’s messages around bullying and being kind to one another. “People come up to me after the show and ask – rather hopefully – surely things have changed?” says Michael. “Unfortunately, not to the extent you might think. Recent studies show stubbornly high levels of bullying, depression and self-harm among rainbow youth.” The Changing Shed plays for a two-night season at Te Kura O Take Kārara, 3 Grace Wright Drive. Free postpartum programme available to parents Often this move means moving away from established support networks. Without the familiar support of immediate family and friends, it can feel overwhelming navigating life with a new baby. From Wednesday, 28 July, a free postpartum programme ‘Precious Beginnings’ will be available to parents of a new baby 12 weeks and younger. There are 10 sessions held over 10 weeks covering a number of postpartum and parenting topics. This programme will be held on a termly basis.

Wanaka has seen unprecedented growth in the last 5 years with many young families choosing to call Wãnaka home.

Precious Beginnings offers a space for parents to experience a warm and supportive environment, where they can connect with other parents in the same season of life.

SUCfree Wānaka will be spreading the reusable message across locals and visitors alike this winter with a 15-week long treasure-hunt style giveaway.

The campaign aims to be an inclusive, community-based celebration of Wānaka’s journey to reduce single-use waste, an acknowledgment of the people, cafes and businesses who have given their support and an easy way to encourage winter visitors to enjoy a SUCfree stay in our town.

The community-based campaign, led by the hospitality industry and formed under the banner of non-profit Plastic Free Wānaka, has the ultimate goal of Wānaka becoming Aotearoa’s first single-use cup free town. 24 local cafes and caravans have now implemented cup lending schemes and 11 are completely SUCfree, saving more than 180,000 cups from landfill annually. The 2021 Wastebusters’ Resourceful Communities survey recently revealed that an outstanding 72% of Wānaka residents always or usually used their own cup when getting a hot drink - a massive increase from 60% in 2019.
