Wanaka Concert Society, in partnership with Chamber Music NZ, presents Ensemble Gô at Lake Wanaka Centre on Wednesday, 10 August at 7.30pm. Monique Lapins, violinist with the New Zealand String Quartet, is joined by marimba player Naoto Segawa for an evening of contemporary music. Their extensive violin and marimba repertoire includes works by South African Peter Klatzow, Dutch avant-garde composer JacobTV, and New Zealand’s own Linda Dallimore. As recipient of the inaugural CMNZ Commissioning Prize, Linda has composed a luminous piece entitled Matariki, with a movement dedicated to each one of the stars of the Pleiades star cluster.
Monique Lapins is a Lecturer at the New Zealand School of Music, Victoria University of Wellington. She enjoys collaborations as a chamber musician, soloist and orchestral player and has toured extensively both nationally and internationally. Monique performs on a 1784 Lorenzo Storioni violin, kindly loaned by the Lily Duncan Trust. Naoto Segawa is a dedicated contemporary percussionist who specialises in marimba performance. He has won numerous awards in competitions including the 14th KOBE International Music Competition, 6th Romania International Music Competition and JILA Music Competition. The week that was the last week of the school holidays for July 2022. More sickness and Covid hitting all ends of the industry. Thank you to the community for working through this and helping each other out. A reminder to people who like to drive their cars around in circles “really-fast”. The public roads are not the place for this. If you don’t want to do it in your own backyard then please approach a friendly owner of a fenced off area, that the public does not have the right to enter and see if you can agriculture their grass. A couple of crashes saw people not see the end of the 100km/h road they were on and fail to turn left or right, but used the fence as their stopping mechanism. Please use the vehicles brakes prior to the intersection as Mr Ford intended it. A male has left a bar with another person’s items. Has realised this a couple of days later. He has returned the items. Some animals are being reported on the roads by motorists. Both north and south of Wanaka. Please be mindful we live in an area where not just the sheep and cows can jump, but deer and pigs. The odd possum and hare are sometimes seen on the roads too. Rocks and some trees falling are around too. The weather is not our friend at the moment. I’m hoping the sun will come out and stay out for a few months soon. A young lady was reported as missing after not getting home about 40 minutes after she was supposed to. After an hour or so she turned up, safe and well. Let’s be wary of our surroundings. Which reminds me that Winter normally sees the odd person returning home to the wrong address after enjoying a beverage and being found sleeping on the couch by the householders. There hasn’t been that many this year, BUT… Please lock your doors. Sensor security lights are great and for those that want to be in the loop while away from home, CCTV. Speeding around the traps is still an issue. I was told by the Speed Camera Van operator that sites like Cardrona Valley Road by the medical centre and McDougal Street can see many hundreds of speed tickets being issued in one day. This is not a great thing to hear. Is life that busy we have forgotten to smell the roses? Slow down a tad. What is 30 seconds onto a journey that some have taken years to get to.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Aspiring Rotary Bingo Night to Support the Community Networks Foodbank Grab your mates, your work colleagues or your neighbours and book a table for the Aspiring Rotary inaugural Bingo night to be held at the Wānaka Rugby Clubrooms on August 10th. Wanaka’s own Jen Anderson is the evening’s caller and it’s guaranteed to be a night of fun with plenty of laughs. There will be bingo prizes, a raffle and a small auction, thank you to the many local businesses that have contributed to making the night a success. Each table of 8 will be provided with a complimentary food platter but please bring your own pen to mark your bingo cards and some cash for the bar and raffles. Tickets are only $20 with all money raised going to support the Community Networks Foodbank. Community Networks/LINK food parcels are there
for anyone struggling to make ends meet by taking some of the pressure off day-to-day living costs for a while. Since the outbreak of COVID 19, there has been a significant rise in the number of food parcels distributed, with a further increase in the colder months. 97th Challenge For Power Boat’s Racing Prestigious Masport Cup
November 12th and 13th will see the 97th challenge for power boat’s racing prestigious Masport Cup. The shores of Glendhu Bay, Wanaka, will be the host venue, chosen by the Haggerty Race Team based in Cromwell. Jason Haggerty won the cup in the familyowned Grand Prix Hydroplane Lady Liz, from Ken Lupton driving Lucus Oils of Waverly, Wanganui, in 2021. As winner and member of the Dunstan Boat Club, he is thrilled to bring this event to local shores. In 1925 the company Mason and Porter (now called Masport), donated the trophy to the New Zealand Powerboat Association. An annual competition by various boat classes since the inception of the cup, has seem Grand Prix Hydroplanes dominate this race. This year, we can expect to see speeds of 160mph (approx 260 km/h) from these boats. The event will see a large field of Grand Prix Hydroplanes from throughout New Zealand in fierce competition for the cup. Spectacular racing will not just be confined to the Masport Cup races, the weekend also includes boats racing for
honours in their respective classes. Look for magnificent manoeuvrability and power of Formula One Tunnels, V8 Grand National Hydroplanes, Modified Hydroplanes, Pro com, Pro stock racing runabouts. The outboard classes feature Formula V & Mod VP outboards, Clubman and Junior class racing. These are exciting events as the youngest members of the boat racing fraternity compete, with teams converging for a great weekend. Glendhu Bay will offer impressive spectator viewing in a breath-taking location. The design of the course allows racing along the waterfront of Glendhu Bay Motor camp, before completing the loop out on the water of the lake. Event organiser, Denise Preece of the New Zealand Grand Prix Hydroplane Drivers Club, have hosted events throughout New Zealand for the past 38 years. They have been working closely with local authorities and surrounding local businesses.
Our thanks to Glendhu Motor Camp, Cougar Security, Queenstown District Council, and Southern Lakes Regional Events for their help, advice and support in bringing this much anticipated event to the local community. Enquiries from local businesses or community groups keen to be involved in this event are welcome, you are invited to get in touch with local organising contacts listed below. RABBIT CONTROL OPERATION Outlet Motorcamp, Outlet Walking Track and Hikuwai Reserve. Preston Pest Control will be laying Pindone carrot bait for rabbit control on and around the Outlet Motorcamp, Outlet Walking Track and Hikuwai Reserve using ground methods.
