Kicking off at 9.00am every Saturday, parkrun is a free, fun and friendly weekly timed 5K community event. Walk, jog, run, volunteer, or spectate – it’s up to you. Bring your dog, bring your friend, come solo, bring your family, bring the buggy – whatever your pace, there is no time limit and taking part is for your own enjoyment. Like the rest of Parkruns around the globe, Wanaka parkrun is entirely organised by volunteers. Every week our high-vis wonders set up the course, track times, marshall and scan barcodes and turn the stunningly sheltered Wanaka Station Park into a fun community event. Participants head around
the park then out along the lakefront in the fresh morning air to Waterfall Creek and back. Because of our Tail Walker, no-one comes last at parkrun! Once done, we all head to Edgewater Resort for coffee and catch-up. Everyone welcome.

Kia ora Wanaka, here is this week’s Crime Line. Crash, crash, crash and crash! Crashes were certainly the flavour of the week. Police attended several vehicle crashes in the Wanaka area. A couple of crashes were due to weather conditions, in particular black ice and the winter road conditions. A reminder that road conditions are forever changing. Roads can still be icing over from 7.00 - 8.00am and onwards. Cardrona Valley Road and The Crown Range were particularly icy and extreme care is required. Other crashes involved wild animals, inexperienced drivers, and intoxication. As mentioned previously, ensure vehicles are safe to drive before hitting the road. This includes windscreens are clear – no ice and no condensation. Drink driving in our community continues to be an ongoing issue. A number of your family, friends or colleagues were again processed for Excessive Breath or Blood Alcohol during the week. Please make the right decision before jumping into your vehicle and driving if you have been drinking alcohol. Don’t let your family, friends or colleagues down by making a bad decision.

Police attended a couple of Family Harm Incidents during the week where alcohol was a major element in these episodes. Whilst on the subject of alcohol, Police attended an assault that occurred at one of the local establishments. The investigation is ongoing, however using violence and assaulting another person is anti-social behaviour. Appropriate consequences for this person’s actions will be sought. This type of behaviour is unacceptable and brings unwanted attention to the establishment where the assault occurred. Police responded to a number of traffic related complaints over the week. Please be a prudent driver and respect the road you drive on and other road users. Be aware of the road rules, speed zones you are travelling in and your general driving manner. A mention must be made to all those sign written vehicles on our roads displaying business names, organisations and phone numbers on them. Remember you are representing the business, company or organisation that is sign written on your vehicle, so drive appropriately. A number of mental health episodes were attended by Police throughout the week. If you find yourself in a difficult spot that you are struggling to work through, please don’t hesitate to seek help or assistance. Whether this is with family, a doctor, a friend or a service, we are all here to help. Police continue to deal with a number of reports of online scams. Please be vigilant when it comes to anything that doesn’t feel right. Always double or triple check before committing to any purchases or transactions online and never give out your bank details. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Aspiring Quilters Celebrates 30 Years In the early 1980s a group of ladies sharing an interest in learning patchwork, gathered in private homes. They called the group Aspiring Patchers. This group was quite informal. They sewed for themselves, as well as making raffle quilts to raise money in the community and for refugees. At one stage they raised $5000 to buy a lane in the new community pool close to Mt Aspiring College.
Throughout the years many quilts have been raffled with money being distributed through the community. The focus now for the group is to make charity quilts for the Cancer Society to distribute to patients. Also, quilts are made for the Upper Clutha Plunket Society.
In 1992 the group was formalised, and the name changed to Aspiring Quilters, this is when the meeting minutes were recorded. With membership increasing they moved to community premises, rather than their homes to accommodate sewing machines and growing membership.
The Aspiring Quilters meet at the Community Hub, the first Saturday 10.00am-4.00pm, the second Thursday 12.00-3.00pm and the third Friday evening 5.00-9.00pm of the month.

Wānaka Backyard Trapping are running a series of public talks about some of the native and introduced animals in Otago. Talk #2 focuses on a citizen science project – the NZ Bird Atlas scheme. Mary Thompson and Richard Schofield (Birds NZ) will explain how we can participate in the project using eBird. Talk #3 is by Warren Chinn, an invertebrate ecologist. Warren will describe some of the fascinating creepy crawlies in habitats across the Central Otago/Lakes region.
