Vieux Amis ('Old Friends') brings together 3 friends, neighbours, and long-standing colleagues. Violinist Justine Cormack, cellist James Bush, and pianist Sarah Watkins all grew up together in Christchurch, and their bonds run deep. Justine and James grew up across the road from each other, learning music together at the Christchurch School of Instrumental Music. There, as teenagers, Sarah and Justine first played chamber music together. The bond carried them into their careers. Sarah and James toured with CMNZ in 1996, and they first performed in this trio configuration in 1997. Justine and Sarah went on to work closely together as founding members of the NZTrio. James took a different tack, his fascination with the freedom and energy of baroque performance

practice leading him to work with many of Europe’s top baroque orchestras and ensembles. The programme is an exquisite and potent musical statement that marries the trio’s diverse areas of expertise, with vim and elegance. The first half has a strong baroque flavour with careful modern comments. We hear different combinations of instruments here, the poise and transparency setting the stage for the fullness of Shostakovich’s powerful second piano trio in the second half. Well I have been back now for a week and it has been a fullon week really, leading to some big hours worked by staff. More drink drivers caught this week including one at midday on Thursday. Beer in mind that if you are still feeling the effects of drinking the night before, you may still be a bit boozed and therefore not fit to drive. I always used to tell people to think of 12 hours from the bottle to the throttle and that is assuming you weren’t too drunk the night before or common sense would say give it longer. Two males were arrested and are facing serious charges in relation to assaulting three males in a taxi van on Friday night. What started as a pleasant conversation here turned very ugly. On Saturday night one male decided not to use his common sense and wanted to get into the silent disco. The male tried to force his way past and was arrested. Why bother, it will never end with success. One bunch of youths thought it would be fun to climb a fence and use a spa pool. Nope. We have been pretty active with Operation Disruption each day and caught everything from seatbelts, speed, mobile phone use, frosty windscreens and other driving offences. On one morning alone, two of us had 10 infringement notices before 10am. Make sure you are aware of the speed restrictions especially. We dealt with a number of family harm matters this week and attended several crashes including one on Stone Street where a parked car was shunted backwards 15 metres and another where a car collided with a cyclist. We had a few more scams reported this week. I advise people never give out any personal details to anyone on the phone that you don’t know. Not your name, address, what bank accounts you have, what transactions you have made, nothing. Banks do not call you and ask for this information! We had a cabin entered by smashing a window, a vehicle unlawfully taken and another two vehicles broken into. Please don’t leave your keys in your vehicle. You never know who may be around who wants your car more than you. On Sunday night we have been dealing with a group of 4 clowns from north of the Bombay Hills who thought they would be funny with rubbish bins in the Meadowstone area. So still no fluffy bunny, muffin or snowman stories this week. I guess the weather hasn’t really been snowman weather so I will excuse that. Good luck to all our Olympians in Japan. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Skirt Tales reprint now available It was in 1993, 100 years since women won the right to vote in NZ and the first in the world, that the QLDC requested me as Community Programme Coordinator, to find out how the community would like to celebrate this occasion. From a public meeting, Mrs Phyllis Aspinall’s passion of compiling a book on the lives of 100 women in the district was accepted with enthusiasm. We formed the Wanaka Womens’ Suffrage Committee. We enjoyed our revelation interviewing and learning history and fascinating information about the early families of the Upper Clutha, along with stories of high achieving women living in the district. As the stories were about women, a family member suggested naming the book Skirt Tales.

Twenty five years later, members of that original committee, Dee Gordon, Liz Hall, Jenny Moss, Cheryl Taylor, plus Pam Kane, with help from Designer, Martin Fisher, compiled Skirt Tales the Sequel. This book tells the stories of women’s lives reflecting the changes in attitude that resulted from the power of women being granted the vote. This local history book is available in the book shops of Wanaka. When we published the Sequel project, we knew there was demand for the original Skirt Tales as it had sold out some time ago. With help from Jo Wilton, Upper Clutha Historical Records Society, this project is now complete. This valued local history book is now available in the book shops in Wanaka and is a must read for all who live here.

Curious about those beautiful posters brightening up the town? Guerrilla Gigs welcome you down to the Dinosaur Park this Friday evening to soak up the warm, uplifting sounds of UK alt-folk band, Good Habits. Having happily been stranded in New Zealand since early last year, Good Habits are now embarking on their Farewell Tour before flying back home. Composed of singer-cellist Bonnie Schwarz and accordionist-percussionist Pete Shaw, the nomadic couple create folk-infused songs that test the limits of their traditional instruments. Local artists, Paige & Ella will be opening up the show, kicking off at 5.30pm. They’ve been writing and playing songs together since 2019 and have started performing together on stage this year.
