Wao Aotearoa has announced that Paul Hawken and Damon Gameau, internationally renowned climate action leaders, will present at the fifth annual Wao climate action summit, alongside other changemakers this October. The acquisition comes as the charitable trust celebrates five years of education and change in the climate action space. Hawken, a notable figure in the regenerative thinking sphere, is also a best-selling author known for ‘Project Drawdown’ and ‘The Regeneration Project’, a global collaborative resource that showcases tangible ways we can reverse global warming. Thanks to the support of Lake Wanaka Tourism, Gameau, documentary filmmaker and director of That Sugar Film, Regenerating Australia and 2040,

will present a discussion looking at the world through the eyes of our future selves. Have we made the world a better place to live? What did we do as a community to make a difference? Are we existing in a future we can be proud of? Using film as a medium to amplify the message, Gameau explores how we can unlock creative solutions to our current climate and biodiversity crisis from the ground up, and then implement those ideas in today’s world. Gameau and Hawken will be part of a strong line-up of korero (talks), films, workshops and tours focused on mainstreaming sustainability and fostering diversity. After the recent storms which brought lots of snow, we dealt with many incidents on the roads which caused plenty of carnage due to people not driving to the conditions. Don’t forget that if the road surface is wet, gritted, or icy, the grip you have on the tarmac is light and it doesn’t take much to send you into a ditch or worse. Almost all the crashes attended in the last three months were related to a driver who had not been able to stay in his/her lane and lost it swerving left and right, then over they go. Luckily most have resulted in only minor injury, but each was avoidable. 1. Stay focused on the road surface and how that should change your driver behaviour. 2. Think about the gap to the car in front. If someone does something erratic or crashes in front of you, will you be able to avoid being in the same crash. This week we attended more than enough Family Harm events. These we cannot give you detail of for obvious reasons, but each one leaves scars on all involved and especially the children who witness violence or abuse. Family Harm is never acceptable. NEVER. Please, if you are a victim of Family Harm come to us and let us try and protect all the people at harm. We are still receiving frauds over social media. Be careful as there are a lot of dishonest people out there and don’t take risks with your hard-earned money. Cash on delivery is a great option. We had a report of a large quantity of diesel stolen from an address in Hawea. This would have taken time and planning. Let us know if you see anyone out there looking suspicious. We have had a lot of reports of the rocks rolling onto the Cardrona Valley Road this week. The contractor drives that area at least 2 times a day clearing the rocks, but it is an ongoing issue that we need people to be careful about. We took a report of a very sentimental loop earring with a diamond in it lost in central Wanaka. Bring it in if you find it. Someone has driven through 10 street signs and a fence on the Mt Aspiring Road to Glendhu Bay area. Possibly a Nissan. What possesses a person to be destructive like this? Is it boredom? Come on!! The blue “Muttonbird” sign from the restaurant has been taken. Keep an eye out for it please and notify us if you find it. Alcohol was again the cause of a few more calls for service including several issues at bars involving drunk patrons and 3 more drink drivers apprehended this week at our checkpoints and a lot of others who blew “under 250” who were close but not over. What a risk they take being close to the alcohol limit. Be kind and say hi to your neighbour this week.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS The best classrooms are those without walls The best classrooms are those without walls: a sentiment well known by the team of volunteer mums who run the iconic Hawea Flat Playgroup. Plans are afoot for the expansion and redesign of the playgroup’s outdoor play space. New additions such as a bike track, water play area and an increase in the size of the outdoor space are all part of the exciting new plans. It is hoped the new design will futureproof the playgroup for the expanding local population. Funding from the Rotary Club of Wanaka supported a hui and design with renowned Playscape Designer Robin Christie, from Wellington. Robin also designed the exceptional outdoor area at

Aspiring Beginnings, Wanaka. He has conceptualised a very special new playscape with work due to start in this year. The revamp of the outdoor space will be broken down into stages with fundraising and grants being sought for each stage. When finished, the new outdoor space will give local children a magical area full of natural materials and organic shapes to do what they do best – play. The Upper Clutha Tramping Club Inc will be celebrating its 20th anniversary next month. There will be a social get-together in Wanaka for past and present members on Sunday, 21 August, from 4.00 to 6.00pm at Urban Grind (upstairs) to celebrate and reflect on the club’s activities. The get-together will include some photos and video footage of club activities during the past two decades. Catered nibbles will be provided.
