To celebrate Beethoven’s 250th birthday, Justine Cormack, founder member of the NZTrio, joins with American pianist Kate Boyd to perform the entire cycle of Beethoven’s violin sonatas over three concerts in three Central Otago venues, with the second being hosted by the Wanaka Concert Society in the Lake Wanaka Centre on 15 February. Each of the ten sonatas is a unique gem and the full cycle is a powerful way to intimately experience both Beethoven’s compositional evolution, as well as his unquestionable creative genius. The concerts have been structured to be enjoyed as stand-alone performances, but don’t miss this rare opportunity

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Hawea Town vs Country – Waitangi Day – Thursday 6 February. HAWEA TOWN (wearing blue): is bounded by Muir Rd, Cemetery Rd and Domain Rd. COUNTRY (wearing red): is all the rest of the Hawea School District. - This year Town are the hosts so the majority of activities will take place at Peter Fraser Park, Hawea. The Hawea Town vs Country Challenge is a time to bring the community together, to meet new people and to enjoy a variety of sports and activities. We encourage the very young to the very mature to come and join in. Long time residents and those who are new to our wonderful community are of course also welcome. Participants don’t need to be experts at any sport, the idea is to turn up and have a go. During the day we offer golf, cricket, netball, petanque, bowls, touch, orienteering and possibly frisbee golf.

After the completion of all sports everyone is invited to meet at the park for the Top Town Challenge consisting of an egg cup relay, spud gun relay and the hotly contested tug of war. During the day Mr Whippy will be on hand. In the afternoon the Fire Brigade will offer up a sausage sizzle. You are welcome to bring your own picnic. The grand finale will be the famous Hawea Lolly scramble. On Wednesday night 5 February, there is an entertaining quiz at the Lake Hawea Community Centre for teams of four, but if you don’t have a team just turn up and we’ll put you in one. This evening raises funds for community groups. In all the years the quiz has been going Town have only won once! Hope to see you there wearing your appropriate colours with pride on Waitangi Day.

WANAKA POOL CLOSURE FOR MAC SWIM SPORTS Mount Aspiring College is holding its annual swim sports at Wānaka Recreation Centre on Wednesday 5 February. This is the biggest annual event at the Centre with up to 900 kids taking part and cheering on their mates (it will be loud!).

The lap pool, main changing rooms and both indoor courts will be closed to the public between 9.00am-3.00pm. The adult hot pool will remain open but may not have its usual relaxing effect! Hello everyone. Hope you’ve all been enjoying the warm weather. On Monday there was a report of a vehicle’s rear windscreen that had been smashed in Albert Town. If it rings any bells and you know something, then call into the station and see us. On Tuesday an individual was arrested for using an item that they weren’t authorised to. Keep in mind if you do have a special benefit for work purposes, only use that benefit for the intended purpose. Wednesday was a bit busier for us. A report was taken where a caravan was broken into. A shoplifter was dealt with. Please don’t pull a sneaky one and try to get things through the self-checkout without paying properly for them. Another car’s rear windscreen was smashed this time in Wanaka. A report was also taken where a person’s bank account was accessed and a lot of KFC transactions were made. There was an incident of a vehicular nature as well. Not so much a crash but rather a handbrake malfunction that then impacted the cars behind it. On Thursday a fire alarm went off at a local eatery. An opportunistic family decided to not come back and scarpered without paying the bill. A heinous act and one that does not set a good example for the kidlets. A family harm incident was attended. On Friday another family harm incident was dealt with. A person in mental distress also required our help. A crash also, but minor in nature, where the driver got into gravel in Northlake and then crashed through a fence. In the evening a drink driver was nabbed and general chaos erupted on Brownston Street when a bar closed resulting in people behaving poorly. Sad to see but not surprising for us. On Saturday there were two driving complaints dealt with. Stay safe out there and drive defensively. A report of a burglary was taken where an irrigation timer was stolen. The evening crew also got three drink drivers off the street. Sunday was a relatively carefree day with most of the station catching up on paperwork. Cars are ovens so don’t leave kids or pets in them. Also keep remembering to lock those houses and cars. Have a great week and stay safe especially with the heat.
