Crime Line This week police attended two domestic disputes. Neighbours and friends kept our community together and helped each other. With Christmas coming things seem to hot up and a helping hand is always good. We also attended two crashes this week. A tractor on the Hawea Bridge nearly fell off as it tried to cross - caution there would have helped. Just north of the Hawea Dam, on State Highway 6, a car flipped onto its roof. It is important to concentrate on driving and not on the scenery. Please! With the holidays coming up we will see considerably more traffic on our roads, so please no texting or use of cell phones while driving. Our youth are still getting possession of alcohol and drinking in public places. This week we issued $200 infringements to a couple of locals for doing just that. A couple more were spoken to for fighting and a couple more for urinating on our lovely town. There was also damage to the toilets in our Dinosaur Park area. A holiday home in Lake Hawea has been entered over the last couple of months, alcohol and fishing equipment were taken. A wee plea to Wanaka and Lake Hawea residents - if you see people hanging around vacant holiday homes please give us a ring and we will check it out. There was a car chase from Queenstown to Queensberry that saw 3 young men all going to court for an array of charges, including drink driving. Thank goodness no one was hurt. With the warmer weather and more people out on bikes we have noticed an alarming trend towards cyclists not wearing helmets. ACC will pay for your care, but that will cost the community many tens of thousands per year (sometimes for many years) to look after you. Please wear a helmet or you may face a $55 infringement fine for not wearing one. This week 2 parents with children by their sides complained when they got a ticket.

The ‘everybody needs to know this’ guide to using water in the Lakes District this summer.
Why should we save water when we live in a district full of lakes and rivers?
Because every drop counts. For 1 billion people in this world, safe water is scarce. In New Zealand it is easy to take water for granted, more so in the Southern Lakes where we are surrounded by lakes and rivers.

Our district has one of the highest household water uses of any district in New Zealand and that high use comes with a community price tag that future communities will not be able to sustain.
Top 5 reasons to save water: 1
Water isn’t free. It costs millions of dollars to supply treated water to your home and to treat and dispose of the wastewater that leaves it.

Supplying and treating water is energy intensive – smart water use will make a difference to the amount of greenhouse gas released into the atmosphere.

To protect our resources for future generations.

To walk the talk and enhance our reputation as a ‘green’ destination.
5
Some supplies cannot cater for excessive summer use.
Your check list: ❑ Run your dishwasher only when it’s full. ❑ Wash fruit and vegetables in a pan of water instead of running water from the tap. Then use it to water your plants.
❑ Free that leaky tap! A dripping tap can waste up to 60,000 litres a year. ❑ Reuse cooking vegetable water to start a nutritious soup. ❑ Put some food colouring in your toilet tank. If it seeps into your toilet bowl without flushing it means you have a leak.
We already have communities that must apply water restrictions during the heat of summer (Lake Hayes Scheme, Arthurs Point and Lake Hawea).
❑ Fill a water bottle and place it in your cistern. Experiment with which size

❑ Bath young children together – it’s more fun!

❑ When running a bath, put the plug in before turning the water on then adjust the temperature as the tub fills up.

Wash your face or brush your teeth while in the shower ❑ Keep a bucket in the shower as it warms up or runs and use it to water plants. ❑ Keep track of your shower times – try to keep it below 5 minutes. ❑ If possible, wash your car on the lawn. It will water your grass and stop the chemicals going down the stormwater drains.
❑ Make sure you’re watering your lawn and not footpaths, driveways, the side of the house or the street.
❑ Use mulch on your garden to reduce the need for watering. ❑ Capture rain water in a barrel and use it for washing the car or watering your garden.
Biggest tip of them all! Get a timer for your garden hose and only water between the hours of midnight and 6am. Your garden will thank you for it and we will get through summer without restrictions.
