The Wanaka Arts Labour Weekend Exhibition & Art Sale begins tomorrow, inviting you to celebrate “Arts Alive,” in its biggest year yet. With over 100 artists exhibiting, including local favourites and those from as far away as Christchurch, Nelson, and Auckland, the four day event at the Lake Wanaka Centre showcases a diverse range of artworks, including paintings, photography, ceramic arts, woodcraft, fibre art, and much more. Six artists will be working live on site throughout the weekend, giving a glimpse into the magic behind their work; Kym Beaton (soft pastel and mixed media); Kate Boswell (watercolour landscapes); Robin Brisker (mixed media); Kate Costello (acrylic portraiture); Jenny Hill (encaustic collage); and Julia Sternokpf (acrylic landscapes and portraiture). Guest artists are Albert Town jeweller Amy Bixby, Cardrona ceramic artist Shannon Courtenay, and
Nelson/Wanaka based painter and sculptor Justine Summers. Don’t miss the festive opening night starting at 5.00pm Thursday, 21 October, for a first look at the exhibiting pieces, drinks, canapés, art awards and live music from Noel Coutts. The Hawea Golf Club was subject to a break in, where significant damage was caused. You’ll be pleased to know that Police are all over it. Tuesday saw more family relationship involvement, with further support put forward both from us and our non-Police partners. Alongside this, neighbour disputes took hold of our resources over a three-day period which resulted is everyone being dealt with appropriately and hopefully some calm heads have prevailed. There was a theft of some tools overnight just outside town from a vehicle. Please, I know that we all want to believe the best of people, but there are some outliers who want to make a quick buck for themselves, without a thought for decent people. Lock your vehicles! Another burglary occurred in the area with a gas califont stolen, literally off the wall. If you get offered a Rinnai Infinity A26 gas hot water system, bare this in mind… right about the time you’re calling us about it! The school holidays have of course meant that we’ve seen an increase in calls for service for our younger generation. There’s no excuse, regardless of your age to treat other people poorly. We’re calling on you good parents of Wanaka, to guide your kids through what’s right and wrong. Theft from a local business owner has also tarred our young people with the same brush after some jewellery was blatantly stolen from town. Parents, we’ll come and introduce ourselves asap.

From this week, there are now a large number of people either going to court, suspended, or waiting for a large infringement through the post for driving with excess alcohol. Do you want to know how to guarantee you’re under the limit? Don’t drink and drive, period. When we’re out on the roads, it’s to keep YOU safe. We are a small community and all know someone out there right now who is driving, cycling, or walking on our roads. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Wanaka Library open during construction If you’re planning on visiting our wonderful Wānaka Library soon, don’t be alarmed when you see the construction work! We are completing some remedial work on the building’s roof, with work set to start the week of 18 October 2021 and to be carried out over a 10 week period. All our services are operating as normal (under the Level 2 requirements) at the Library, so please do pop in. Parking at the library will be unavailable during this time to allow work to be completed safely and Bullock Creek Lane will be closed.
Discover your place - bike tour At the end of the month, Wao as part of their annual sustainability Summit, will be running a tour around Wānaka, exploring key spots by bike, that highlight areas of sustainability within our community. Monique Kelly, program director at Wao says “we don’t need to look into the distant future to see what a sustainable community looks like, we just need to see what is already being done right here, and now.” The tour will stop at 15 locations, including a look at pest control, community gardens, natural springs, our waste system, repurposing, renewable energy, urban development and biodiversity. “This tour is about our community becoming even more energised and connected to this place and its people.”
There will also be periods where it may be noisy in the library, so as an alternative option we are running a PopUp Library between 10.00am and 4.00pm at the Wanaka Recreation Centre. Just look for the flags at the small building next to the pool and courts! The PopUp Library will provide a temporary, convenient (there is plenty of close parking) option for the community to borrow and return library items during the building work taking place at the main library.

It’s been a challenging couple of years for our WSC aspiring athletes getting to the on-snow training and competitions they need to progress in their sport. Despite this, our members have had great success both here and overseas. Now we hope our community fundraiser will help them with the next step.
