Hawea Flat School Fair & Family Fun Day Hawea Flat School are delighted to invite the whole community to our second School Fair and Family Fun Day! Saturday 22nd November, from 10am-2pm.
The music is confirmed and the Garden Party atmosphere is guaranteed! We’ll have home baked goods, Devonshire Teas, BBQ, Lemonade, Sushi, Ice creams, Candy Floss, Toffee Apples, Chocolate Wheel, White Elephant and fun stalls!
It’s been three years since our last event and since then, our school has undergone some major renovations to house our ever growing school roll. Sadly, funding will not cover the expansion or replacement of our existing school hall.
We’ll also be hosting the most important election of the year! Who do we throw in the pool? The school principal or a local QLDC Councillor? (Vote rigging encouraged!)
Funds generated from our fun day will go towards this project and our children are hard at work preparing garden goodies, arts, crafts and a range of entertainment to ‘wow’ your senses!

Much of the last few days have been spent dealing with driving complaints in the Central Otago area - 28 at last count. Many involved drivers exhibiting poor vehicle control and bad decision making, so endangering other road users. Last Monday, 10th November, LandSAR dealt with a report of an overdue tramper in the Wilkin Valley, Makarora. He was located alive and well. On 11th November, Police attended a nasty crash at the intersection of SH6 and SH84, at the north end of Riverbank Road. A driver pulled out into the path of an oncoming vehicle heading out of town towards Luggate. The local driver received leg and rib injuries. The matter was resolved in Court, and a large fine paid. Also on the 11th there was a crash on the Albert Town Bridge where a driver failed to stop short and rear-ended the stationary vehicle in front. Fortunately no one was injured.

On the 13th Police received a driving complaint where a motor home being driven in the Fantail Falls area damaged another vehicle. Both parties were covered by insurance and a Written Traffic Warning was issued. Police are investigating an incident at 3.19pm on 14th November outside the BNZ on Ardmore St where the Wanaka parking warden was threatened with bodily harm by a person, illegally parked on yellow lines. Anyone witnessing the incident is asked to contact me at the Wanaka Police Station. A domestic incident was reported on 15th November in Hunter Crescent and a male was arrested for wilful damage. He makes a Court appearance on 1st December. Police attended a non-injury accident at Makarora on 16th November where a driver caused his rental vehicle to fall off the road. Again we are pleased to report there were no injuries. A big thank you to the emergency services from Makarora and Lake Hawea who attended and did a brilliant job of making the scene safe and clearing the car wreck off the north-bound lane. An outside umbrella were stolen from The Landing Restaurant at 80 Ardmore St over the weekend. Anyone with information relating to this theft is asked to ring the Wanaka Police on 443 7272. Local Police will be focusing on seatbelts, speed, intersections and drivers using cell phones over the next week. So be warned. Have a safe week and drive defensively.

More Development Proposed in West Wanaka
Black area shows the approximate location of a proposed new house site near Damper Bay
A resource consent application by the Sharpridge Trust has been notified for yet another house near Damper Bay. This land has already been subdivided once and two house sites were obtained. The applicant now wants to add a third house site as well as moving one of the existing sites to a more visible location. The Wanaka 2020 plan shows the Wanaka community highly value this undeveloped area and want it protected from residential development. The Environmental Society agrees and believes that more development will further degrade this outstanding natural landscape. If you believe that this area should be protected from development have your voice heard. th

THE FREYCINET NATIONAL PARK IS HOME TO WINEGLASS BAY, continuously voted one of the top 10 beaches in the world. Named due to its shape, similar to that of a wineglass, the bay is renowned for its crystal clear turquoise waters and squeaky white sand. The ‘squeaky’ noise made as you walk on some of the beaches of the Freycinet Peninsula only occurs when a certain type of sand, with grains of a certain size, creates layers from the wind and moisture. The sand needs to be well weathered, smooth and rounded. The squeaking noise is caused by friction of the layers rubbing against each other. Polluted sands will not squeak due to the foreign matter mixed in with the sand. Therefore, a beach with squeaky sand is a very clean beach.
