Grow Wanaka is a charitable trust community garden project. We are working towards a circular economy through the collection and composting of organic matter from our urban centre, and then using the compost to grow holistic produce at our community garden. Produce grown in the garden is gifted to volunteers and community charities to provide for those in need. Grow Wanaka’s vision is to create a vibrant educational hub where community members can come to learn, connect and grow. Our aim is to inspire a local holistic food movement to enhance food resilience and food security while building community connections, and promoting community health and wellbeing.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Bike Wanaka is gearing up for spring!
Due to COVID we at Bike Wanaka had to make the hard decision to cancel the 10 Hour Dean’s Bank event for the first time in 10 years.

We wouldn’t be able to run the event safely at Level 2 and didn’t want to compromise the safety of the racers. Instead we have decided to focus this summer on smaller, local fun events! We have lots coming up so watch our Facebook page and better yet become a member of the Club.
Hikuwai 4 Hour - Take to the freshly facelifted Hikuwai Track on 11 December. Race solo or in a team for 4 hours straight! Entries will open soon so stay tuned.
With Club membership, not only do you support Bike Wanaka maintaining our amazing trail network, you also contribute to new trails being built and cycle advocacy. Our membership cycle renews now, so you’ll have your membership for an entire year.

Lake Hawea Community Centre Outreach

Like Wanaka, the population of the Hāwea district has grown substantially over the last five years and the Lake Hāwea Community Centre committee has seen a growing need for community support to be put in place.
and an opportunity to meet others in the community. Our recent ‘Polar Plunge’ was one of these events, as was the planned ‘Bonfire Night’, which unfortunately had to be cancelled because of the Level 4 lockdown.
Over the past year, several initiatives have been undertaken. Firstly, we have started a ‘Friendship Group’ for those aged over 65 years. This involves social outings, a fortnightly arts & craft session and a film club.
Planning is also commencing for the establishment of a Men’s Shed in Hāwea, which, should be in operation by the end of the year.
In addition, a ‘Haere Mai’ group has been established to welcome and support people who have come to live in our community from overseas. This includes social events and ESL classes for those who want to improve their English.
We invite all of you from Hāwea to become involved in these initiatives. We have a great community and want to keep it that way. With the huge increase in the number of young families now living in the district, we have also started monthly ‘Family Nights’ – to give families an economical fun night out

Wanaka Community Hub at Level 2

Well, it has been a crazy month here in Wanaka, but things are still busy at the Wanaka Community Hub. With the new restrictions on group sizes, we have had to rearrange things a bit, but we are still all go with lots of events happening. Our auditorium, meeting room and a brand-new upstairs space can still accommodate plenty of people spaced out – more if you come in bubbles! We are thrilled that many of our groups are still continuing to use the Hub and book office and venue space, and we look forward to seeing you all here for yoga, art, meditation, birthday celebrations, church and children’s groups, and more! There is a wonderful art exhibition from

We are still planning on holding our WonderChef fundraising event as soon as we get back Level 1, so stay tuned for more details on that. It was well publicised in national media of an Auckland couple who blatantly disregarded Level 4 Lockdown restrictions and travelled to Wānaka for a spot of skiing. The couple have since returned to Auckland where they will face charges for their actions. A male was refused service from a local bottle store for his intoxication levels. He left the premises in his vehicle and was subsequently breath tested a short time later. He will be off to court this week after blowing nearly four times the legal limit. The owner of a vehicle who had it parked in their driveway, found a drunk man inside it during the early hours of the morning. The male was bringing up the contents of his dinner. Police were unable to locate the man and inquiries are ongoing. To avoid situations like this, please ensure to lock and secure all vehicles regardless of where they are parked. A check point on Aubrey Road found one driver in breach of their licence conditions, and one who blew over three times the legal limit. There were two others stopped in the weekend for drink driving. One in Luggate and another coming from the Lindis Pass who produced a shocking breath alcohol reading over 6 times the legal limit. These drivers will be off to court and will spend some time without a licence. Several drivers in the Wānaka area were handed Driving Suspension notices for excess demerit points. This will see them off the road for the next three months. Not wearing your seatbelt, impaired whilst driving, being distracted and or speeding will quickly see your demerit points rack up and find you in a similar situation.

Local businesses have done a great job adhering to their requirements of Alert Level 2, using novel ways to continue to operate.
