So, this week started with more shoplifting… and ended with a charge to go to court. There were crashes on the Crown Range Road, south of the Cardrona village – take care, if it’s not the ice, it’s the grit that can catch people out. The team spent some time throughout the week with a family in need of support. We’re lucky here to have some professional and motivated people in our community, outside of Police who are on hand to seek advice, guidance and support from. You can pop into the Community Hub on McDougall Street or call the Community Networks team on 03 443 7799 to get some advice and to seek out what well-being services are available. Other incidents dealt with by the team this week included problem housemates, lots of prevention work on our roads and doing everything we can to support those in crisis – I can’t reiterate what I said above, enough. Help is truly out there, so, please, speak to someone before things get a bit on top of you. Police have also identified an emerging trend that has begun to show itself with scams via text messages. While the traditional cold-calls from ‘your bank name inserted here’ are still occurring, people are now receiving txt messages with a link attached – DO NOT OPEN THE LINK! Delete the message! Banks, government agencies and other corporates will not randomly send you messages to open links via a text message. We’ve also been hearing of scams with products such as iTunes gift cards whereby someone you know has ‘asked you to buy them’ in an email. Speak to the person first to check if it was them or not and clarify that it wasn’t their e-mail/Facebook that has been compromised. During the week, a small trampoline has also been taken from the Holy Family School on Aubrey Road – if one has shown up unexpectedly on your lawn, let us know, or pop it back yourselves so the kids can use it again. As per usual for this time of year, we also have a number of driver licences and cell phones handed in to us as missing property from the ski resorts – if you’ve lost it, we might have it, so come down and check. Police put a focus on drink driving on Friday night, and had some high-profile checkpoints. Sadly, we report that 8 people were caught on Friday night driving over the breath alcohol limit. Finally, I want to talk about our preventative work on the roads, dubbed Op Deterrence, and our ‘why’ behind it. Why we feel the need to pull you over in your car to breath test you. Why we make passengers walk home if their driver is on a restricted licence. Why the result of going too fast results in a ticket. Because moments like five-young boys tragically losing their lives in a car crash in Timaru this weekend, happen. We also plead with you, the parents to know where your kids are, know where your car keys are and maintain those boundaries that don’t make you your child’s best friend, but make you their best parent and ultimately keep them safe.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Wanaka Skate Club still at it after 26 years

Saturday,14 August will see the Wanaka Skateboard Club at it again with a Fundraising event to be held at Water Bar from 10.00pm, $10 Koha on the door.

Showcasing five of Wanaka’s premier rock bands. The Cloobs, Snake Rat, Cheap thrills, SLOW, M.A.C band Better Than Nothing, and DJ NO PLAY will be rocking the stage to raise funds and build awareness for Wanaka mental health services and skateboard facilities.

With local businesses on board providing prizes this is guaranteed to be a great night out. To date the Club has raised over $4,000 for local charities and those in need.

Wanaka Skate Club would like to thank the many businesses in Wanaka, QLDC and all the members past and present who have helped the Club to grow to where it is today, and will continue to give back to the community.

With Stage 3 of the skate park newly completed, the Club has seen unprecedented growth and uptake from the youth in the region. The Club now want to continue pushing the sport, advocating

“A Little Box of Love” Food for Love Wanaka are excited to announce they now have a donation box at New World Three Parks. T Thanks to the lovely Dean and Tash it will be even easier for the community to get behind and support Food for Love. All items go directly to our cooks to help prepare delicious meals for our nominees and their families. We are also supplying school lunches for a few local school children and would like to focus this month on non-perishable lunch box items for our donation bin.

As the days start to get longer, there are plans for an evening Club night and skate jams for the young (and old) to showcase their skills.

Throughout September, The Wanaka Community Hub will be holding a fundraising event, with the support of Mitre10 MEGA Wanaka, New World Three Parks and Wanaka Self Storage. Contestants will have one hour to cook and plate a meal for the judges at one of the four heats (6, 13, 20 and 27 September), with the top two from each heat going through a final on 4 October. Two of the heats will be cooking a fish dish, and two will be cooking with meat – the final night will be a mystery box! Have you got what it takes to become Wanaka’s first WonderChef?

Wanaka Catchment Group (WCG) PROJECT ADMINISTRATOR The Wanaka Catchment Group (WCG) is working with the Ministry for the Environment (MfE) through Freshwater Improvement Funding to deliver environmental projects to improve and preserve our natural environment. We will require the support of Project Administration services to continue meeting our reporting needs and project goals with MfE. We require a service provider with knowledge of the farming industry to help in delivering environmental restoration projects. The ideal service provider will be based in Wanaka and will report to the Executive Director and WCG Board. The administration services will help assist with the management of the Riparian and Wetland Mitigation Projects involving remediation of waterways and natural wetlands or, constructing new wetlands which will contribute to improving the ecological values and health of Lake Wanaka’s waterways. This is an opportunity to be on the right side of history and work with farmers and community members who are not only passionate about our environment, but are in partnership with those that live and work on the land.
