MY COMMUNITY NEWS Future Plans & AGM with free circus session for the kids We thank the community for showing your support in recent submissions to Council as this has helped us greatly. At this meeting, we will be updating everyone about the latest developments for the future of the club and our quest for new premises. After this update we will hold our AGM and share our 2020 results and achievements. There will be wine and nibbles for the adults and session including circus skills for the children of everyone attending the meeting. Roll up! Roll up! Aspiring Gymsports would like to invite interested community members to an information session about our future plans, followed by our AGM, on 14 March 2021 at 4.00pm at 33 Reece Crescent.
This includes a chance to try out unicycles, aerials, stilts and some juggling alongside our usual gymnastic activities.
We are very fortunate to have members on our committee who have worked hard and used their experience and talents to move the club forward in the last year. Due to other commitments, two of our awesome committee members Kirsten Wyatt (Chair) and Zoe Huggate (Treasurer) will be moving on this year. We are keen to hear from anyone with the enthusiasm and skills necessary for either of these roles. We would like you to join our sociable and productive team.

Education is fun! Thanks to the Wānaka A&P show, we’ll have a space called ‘Our Place’ this year, where we’ll be talking about healthy ecosystems and community wellbeing. But what does that have to do with you? We all love our place for different reasons and most of us agree that our environment is world class. Yet, there are pressures on our land, plants, animals, lakes and rivers due to increased human activity and land-use changes. It’s important that we care for our natural world, as well as our community. Have you been wishing for something you can do, ideally fun, to make a difference? Then come down to ‘Our Place’ at the show. You can experience how water gets filtered and

The first community-led fundraiser for M!NT is a success. M!NT’s aim is to forge great lives for people with intellectual disability in the Upper Clutha region. This programme goes to the heart of what M!NT is about, because it enables children, youth and adults to stay active, engaged and lead a meaningful life. The money raised will go specifically toward the running costs of our term time activity programme, which upcoming sessions includegym, swimming, music, athletics and dance.
On Saturday 27 February, at Corbridge Downs, the first community-led fundraiser for M!NT Charitable Trust took place. $40,000 was raised for M!NT’s weekly activity programme.

Well I am glad the alert level has been lowered which will allow our A&P Society to continue with running the show next weekend, especially as I have some time to attend what is a great occasion for the town. As for the week of crime and enforcement, we have had a varied but relatively quiet week of occurrences. Monday saw a local young man suspended for excess demerit points on his driver’s licence. A male was apprehended for excess breath alcohol, again at a very high level that led to his suspension from driving for 28 days prior to his court appearance. Police also dealt with an ongoing family harm matter and the report of students assaulting one another at Mount Aspiring College. The school and Police will take appropriate action bearing in mind the youthful age of those involved. Tuesday saw a number of motorists apprehended for driving whilst using cell phones, please amend this behaviour. Time to purchase that hands free set up. Wednesday saw Police deal with reported damage to a mailbox on Gunn Road, Albert Town, Police enquiries are ongoing. Police dealt with a couple of mental health incidents this week. Should you or anyone of your family or friends need support, please come and see us, or contact the Mental Health Crisis team on 0800 46 78 46. Saturday was a busy night for Police, with lots of disorder and fights around town. Someone has damaged a water fountain overnight on Ash Avenue. Police also dealt with an incident in which a pedestrian was struck on Hedditch Street. The driver of the vehicle was found to have excess breath alcohol. Sunday saw Police called to another major family harm matter, from which the male party has been arrested and charged. Thankfully the victim is now engaging with Police about this and other historical abuse matters. With regard to other lost property, our Watchhouse Officer was delighted to reunite one of the hearing aids with their owner this week. This owner wished to express their gratitude to the finder. We still have one hearing aid looking for an owner, so if you have lost such an item, please come and check with us. Police also have a hunting arrow found near the Mount Iron walking/bicycle track; this is not an appropriate place to use something that can be classified as an offensive weapon. We aim to get the first fire truck out the door within 5 minutes of the siren sounding, as a lot of what we attend is time critical. We have two trucks at the station, as well as a van. One of our trucks (851) is a standard firefighting truck. The second truck (857) is a Pump Rescue Tender. Although it is just as capable when it comes to fighting fires, it also has hydraulic rescue tools on board which are more commonly known as the Jaws of Life.
