Wānaka businesses get a chance to reflect on their resilience and celebrate success this weekend at the Ignite Wānaka Business Excellence Awards. The biennial Awards, supported by major sponsor Milford Asset Management, recognise 39 local businesses and individuals who all demonstrate strength, agility and commercial success despite the Covid-19 pandemic. More than 60 businesses entered the awards and were judged by an independent judging panel. The awards were originally set down for November 2021 but alert level restrictions have meant the event has been pushed out to June. The gala dinner will be held at Rippon Hall this Saturday.

“We are delighted to be able to finally host this hugely popular event that celebrates success in our local business community,” Ignite Wānaka board chair Jo Learmonth says. “We are especially grateful to all our sponsors – without their support we would not be able to hold the awards. Here is a snippet of what the local constabulary have been up to this week. We all like to go out and enjoy ourselves and have a social drink. However, going out shouldn’t turn you into superman or superwoman or a MMA/WWE superstar. There is absolutely no reason why going out should turn in to a violent affair. Police attended a couple of incidents this week where an outing to a local establishment has turned violent between patrons. This is not the answer and you will find yourself in a spot of bother if you engage in any form of violence or similar behaviour. Police attended a number of Family Harm incidents this week. All incidents varied from minor to serious. Alcohol and drugs, children, money and mental health were all factors in the incidents attended. If you need help don’t be shy to ask or seek it. Don’t forget the Wanaka Community Networks at the Community Hub, 34 McDougall Street, Wanaka has a number of agencies that are there to help. I’m sure most of you would have heard about, observed or come in to contact with the increased Police presence last Wednesday. Police were out and about reminding road users of their obligations when operating a motor vehicle. Restraints, mobile phones, speed, impairment and stopping at stop signs were the focus for this day. Unfortunately, there were many failures in these areas and many infringement notices issued. Please be a prudent driver and be respectful of all other road users. It wouldn’t be a crime line without a mention of the continuing trend of drinking and driving. Wanaka is a small community and I’m sure you all know of someone who has been affected by drink driving in some way or form. Don’t be that person or the next person to be caught over the limit. You not only put yourself at risk but you also put the community at risk. Make the right decision. A reminder to all that winter is well on its way. We have already had a couple of frosts. Please ensure your windscreens are clear before travelling and you plan to leave a few minutes earlier than usual to travel to your location. This may also be a timely reminder to give or get someone to give your vehicle a once over and check window wipers, defrosters, heaters, tyres and fluid levels are all tickety boo. Finally, an ongoing issue in Wanaka is the use of mobile phones whilst driving. The Rotary Club of Wanaka and Police are teaming up to try and improve this dangerous practice. Many vehicles have the ability to set up hands free calling through bluetooth. This can be slightly tricky for some to set up especially if you don’t have a 13-year-old you can call upon. MY COMMUNITY NEWS Wao launches new round of construction waste workshops Not-for-profit Wao Aoteoroa and the Better Building group are launching a new round of free construction waste workshops, aimed at both improving the way we build and changing the way we discard construction waste. Programme coordinator Olivia Bonifant says the workshops have garnered significant interest. “We ran these during our Wao Summit last year with great success. It’s fantastic to see our local building companies making active changes to reduce their environmental impact,” Bonifant said. The workshop is split into two sessions, Construction Waste 101 - What Is The Problem? and Construction Waste 102: Setting Up A Plan. There will be speakers from

Local schools ‘empowered’ to make change after CAI huiworkshops Community non-profit Wao Aotearoa in conjunction with Enviroschools, an education based environmental programme, have this month wrapped their school-focused huis as part of the Climate Action Initiative (CAI). The workshops were held both in Queenstown and Wānaka and involved teachers and students from schools within the Queenstown Lakes District, Haast and Glenorchy. The day looked at climate change and ways schools and students can reduce their greenhouse gas

(GHG) footprint. Expert speakers from the community provided insights around key areas of focus such as transport, energy, planting, water and waste. Students were empowered to have conversations with each expert and ask detailed questions, ultimately planting the seed for creating change within their own school. Many schools in attendance were already involved in the CAI and had been gathering data, while other schools were inspired to conduct their own greenhouse gas footprint after participating in the hui. Dr Carly Green, environmental engineer, will be supporting those schools to complete their footprints by the end of the year.

Caution – scientific study in progress in Lake Wānaka With decades of significant urban development, contaminants flowing into our deep-water alpine lakes is becoming an increasing concern. WAI Wānaka has commissioned a scientific study commencing this week, to learn where the contaminants go once they enter the lake. As part of this research study, NIWA deploys drifters (pictured) in Roys Bay to better understand flow patterns in Lake Wānaka. From the surface they look just like buoys with a red and white surface float but are geared with a GPS unit, satellite telemetry and an LED flasher that activates at night. As the bulk of the drifters are submerged up to 1m below the surface, NIWA is asking lake users to avoid getting too close. If you see any

drifters washed up on the lakeshore or beyond the Roys Bay area shown on the map, please get in touch with Ash Rabel 027 353 2286 to report location. Dr Don Robertson, trustee of WAI Wānaka, Guardian of Lake Wānaka and former NIWA scientist, says “If we are to protect the quality of our lakes and rivers so that they are swimmable and drinkable for our children and grandchildren, we urgently need to understand the impact we are having on water quality. This will help us build evidence-based solutions in the future.”
