THE WĀNAKA FESTIVAL OF COLOUR 2023

Submitted by: Jo Mills

Over the course of a week, the hills and streets of Wānaka will be alive with the sound of music, laughter and riotous applause as the Wānaka Festival of Colour returns. Many of the Festival artists will be running workshops and putting on special performances for the local schools, offering Upper Clutha students the opportunity to engage up close with world-class performers. The Royal New Zealand Ballet will be back in Wānaka for the festival week, running school and community workshops, allowing local dancers to learn from Aotearoa’s finest. For musicians, Australian multiinstrumentalist, composer and producer, Adam Page, will perform and run workshops with Mt Aspiring College students. Adam has been known to compose songs comprised of beat-boxing accompanied by sounds created by his own beard [you read that correctly!] while also being an extremely talented vocalist, saxophonist and

percussionist to name just a few of his skills. All this to say that the students of the region are in for a treat! A highlight of the festival is the Wānaka New World Community Day with a series of free events, performances and installations in and around the Wānaka CBD. Local dance troupes, United Dance Crew and Pointe Central, will showcase their new dance and music performances; The Biggest Little Circus will astound with their highly skilled juggling and aerial acrobatics, while Wasabi, Queenstown’s Japanese Community Choir, will be performing on this side of the hill. These are just a few of the performances that will be brightening up the streets of Wānaka on Saturday, 1 April. The Wānaka Festival of Colour 2023 runs from 26 March – 2 April.
