After three years under the One New Zealand banner, the charitable trust has announced a change of name to WAO. WAO is both an acronym of We Are One and the Māori word for forest. The forest symbolises the space between the ecological ceiling and social foundation, which we need to transition from a siloed monoculture into a self sustaining ecosystem. The name better reflects the organisation’s core values of partnership and collaboration, as well as the focus on a regenerative approach to future thinking.

WAO was founded by Wānaka locals Monique Kelly and Arna Craig in 2018, and has since hosted workshops, events and summits in both Queenstown and Wānaka to further its mission “to educate, inspire and enable New Zealand communities to accelerate towards a Carbon Zero future and beyond.”

Wao have also been the driving force behind SUC Free Wanaka and the Wanaka Hospo Goes Eco working group, the Better Building working group and the annual Harvest Festival, among many other local sustainable initiatives.

The WAO team are finalising details of the organisation’s annual summit, which last year saw over 2,000 interactions with locals on both sides of the hill attending workshops, keynote and seminars. “The trust decided it was more important than ever to hold our flagship event,” said Kelly. “We aim to get the community talking, collaborating and activated about resetting the dial, especially given the pressures our community is facing in the wake of Covid-19. It’s no coincidence that we have also chosen this point in time to rebrand the charitable trust. It just felt right” The 2020 Summit - which they have called the Reset Summit - will offer a mix of events between 27 October and 1 November 2020. An exciting new creative event. Toi will be a celebration of creativity, design and excellence for locals and visitors who love the arts and will feature two days of workshops, exhibitions, events and performance. Slated to take place on October 17 & 18.

This sector includes design, architecture, music, performance, fashion, floral, visual art, etc. The event name comes from the Maori word ‘toi’, which often translates to knowledge, skill, excellence, source, origin or mastery.

Achieving win-win outcomes for native biodiversity and pastoral farming The Wanaka Branch of the Royal Society invites you to the following presentation: Achieving win-win outcomes for native biodiversity and pastoral farming. Te Mana O Te Taiao – Aotearoa New Zealand Biodiversity Strategy 2020 has as its vision that “the mauri of nature is vibrant and vigorous” and sees people as part of nature and nature as supporting life and human activities. The single biggest land use in New Zealand today is sheep and beef farming which comprises 40% of the land area and contains 25% of all remaining native vegetation. Most importantly, native vegetation on sheep and beef farms often occurs in those parts of New Zealand with the least remaining native biodiversity and the least amount of public conservation land.

In this presentation, David will initially outline the key components for managing native biodiversity in pastoral farming systems, then discuss in more detail how integrated or whole farm management planning can help sustain and enhance native biodiversity in farming landscapes. David Norton has taught and researched the ecology and conservation of New Zealand’s native biodiversity for over 35 years. In the last couple of decades, his research has focused on enhancing native biodiversity within farming systems through remnant management, restoration and management planning, including publication of a 2013 book ‘Nature and Farming’ with an Australian colleague. David works closely with sector groups such as Beef+Lamb NZ and has written the biodiversity section for the new Farm Plan template that will replace the current land environment plans later in 2020.

Booking opportunities at the Wanaka Community Hub Over the last six months the Wanaka Community Hub has been a hive of activity. The offices, meeting rooms and Sidey Auditorium are being used by a large number of local groups and organisations – some as a one off booking and others making regular bookings.

We are conscious however, there are a number of small local groups who do not have the ability to generate funds through grants or government funding, and are therefore unable to pay for these wonderful spaces for their groups to meet in on the odd occasion – these might include mother’s groups, music groups, knitting groups, elderly meet ups etc. The Community Hub Trust is keen to provide some openings for these groups to access the Hub. If you are in this category and would like to book one of the spaces (office, meeting room, kitchen, auditorium) please email us to register your interest –

G‘day everyone, I hope you all had a good week. We’ve been kept rather busy with a variety of jobs attended. On Monday, Police served a trespass notice to an individual denying them entry to a local establishment. Always best not to cause a fuss at the watering holes if you wish to wet your whistle at them in the future. Tuesday saw two reports of cars broken into. These were at the Young Valley carpark and the Fantail Falls carpark. The cars were rifled through with the offenders looking for items that take their fancy. A handy tip to stop these types targeting your car, is to leave no items visible and leave your glove box and centre console open so they can see it’s empty. Police also spent a significant amount of time searching for an individual who might have been in distress, but turned out to not be needing our help. Wednesday was a bit of a reprieve for us. Some skis were stolen from Cardrona by the ski racks on Thursday. Wanaka Police also were involved in the kidnapping in Alexandra. A late night report of overdue day walkers near Fantail Falls saw Police trying to locate their car in the small hours of the morning. Thankfully they walked out the next morning after Search & Rescue had been mobilised already. Friday saw a report taken of a lost EFTPOS card that had been used earlier in the week. If you notice you’ve lost your card, put a hold on it immediately through your banking app or by calling them. This will stop any unauthorised use. In the evening, District Road Policing staff had the booze bus out. Five drink drivers were nabbed with two of them off to court and the remainder receiving tickets. Saturday was a busy day for us. Dayshift were kept busy helping with a large fire and driving complaints. The evening saw the booze bus out again with five more drink drivers caught. Police also helped someone get to a safe place after they found themselves incapable of looking after themselves, most likely due to a combination of drugs and alcohol. In relation to the booze bus and checkpoints in general, we are aware that the location gets outed pretty quickly to alert the rest of town. This sort of behaviour is actually enabling drink driving, so please think twice before essentially letting them drive drunk. These people need to get caught because ultimately they could hurt your dear ones on the roads. Some people have already had the misfortune of experiencing this.
