Hello Wanaka and surrounds, and visitors to our stunning area. Well, the cold weather is here in force. We haven’t had any crashes in the frost yet, but we have had one crash on a gritted area of road. There have been a number of crashes reported on the frosty roads elsewhere in the region so “BE CAREFUL”. I came over the Lindis Pass on Thursday night at -5 degrees and the road looked at night like any other road. Naturally I drove ‘to the conditions’ and there was no issue, but if I hadn’t it may have been a different story. We so often attend a crash that if the driver had been travelling even 10-15km/h slower, it wouldn’t have happened. As a rule, if your dashboard is recording an air temperature of say 1 degree, then the road surface temperature will be around -5 to -6 degrees. This should give you some idea of what you’re driving on, particularly if there is water on the road or in the surface cracks. We also attended a minor crash at a stop sign on the intersection of Brownston Street and McDougall Street. We conducted some work on distracted drivers and issued 5 speeding notices, 3 notices for operating a phone while driving, 1 notice for a learner driver breaching conditions and 2 driver licence suspension. I am sure people would rather spend that hard earned money on things they want or need to spend that money on, but those were choices they made. Two people were seen attempting to steal two mopeds from a local business. Because they were locked, they didn't get far. We continue to work on illegal firearms and recovered several over the last few days. Please lock your vehicles. We attended a theft from a vehicle that occurred in the Hawea area.

MY COMMUNITY NEWS Digital Help Drop-Ins Continue to be a Success at Wanaka Library

The Wānaka Library’s weekly Digital Help Drop-ins are proving to be a great success. Members of our community who would like help operating their smartphone, tablet, iPad, or laptop, or anyone who is looking to improve their digital skills can just drop-in. Libraries, with the help of the Students in the Community Programme that runs at Mount Aspiring College, have corralled over a dozen super helpful tech-savvy Year 13 students, and with librarian supervision, they are there to guide the community members through any technical challenges they may be facing. Every Thursday at the Wānaka Library, community members who would like some digital help, receive a one-on-one session with their technology guru; each session is selfpaced and tailored to the device they would like help with. Even if they don’t have a specific question, students are there to take them through a series of tips and tricks to make their day-to-day digital experience easier.

Community members can receive help by learning how to text pictures, use Apps, increase font sizes, sort notifications, read e-Books and e-Audiobooks, clean up the Apps on their smartphones, emails, and more… We are here to help, and we look forward to seeing you!

International Day of Yoga Wanaka 3rd edition
