The scurry of the holiday season is rapidly approaching and whether you’re looking for a relaxing respite right now or saving the read for another time, we have an issue packed with a variety of articles that I’m sure you’ll enjoy. Savor that pumpkin latte or favorite libation while learning about the persistent process of capturing Larry—the canine kingpin, shopping venues that benefit rescues, recommendations for the best local dog-friendly breweries, preparing for your furry friend’s future, and programs providing assistance to veterans and their dogs plus much, much more.

Mark your calendars for December 7–8 to attend the Phoenix Holiday Pet Expo (see page 32). While last years’ show was unfortunately cancelled, we’re looking forward to seeing you at this event. Bring your four-legged buddy, stop by our booth to say “hi” and register to win some great prizes.

Got that holiday gift-giving list going yet? Somewhere between Aunt Edna (who’s never liked any of the gifts you’ve given her anyway) and the neighbor who “has everything,” remember to pencil in your local or favorite shelter. Give them a call and find out what is needed. You won’t be challenged to find something that “fits” and the gift will be so gratefully received.

With sincere wishes for a joyous and blessed holiday, WOOF!

Sky Sanctuary Rescue

Afour-pound Cairn Terrier, fur matted with oil and grease, creeps out from under a car as Elli Smith, the founder of Sky Sanctuary Rescue (SSR), a 501(c) (3) in Scottsdale, Arizona, calls, “Come here, baby boy.” He follows her around the pick-apart junkyard, keeping a 10-foot distance before the whir of the metal compactor spooks him.

Smith is only allowed in the scrapyard during business hours. For five months, she and cofounder Caitlin Beall have tried to lure the semi-feral dog into a net that’s buried under the ground and connected to two poles. Finally, Smith earns “this little grease monkey’s” trust, and he follows her into the trap.

GRIT AND GRACE

Whether Smith is hiking through Tonto National Forest at 4 a.m. to save Glenda, a 50-pound mutt who was surrounded by coyotes, or netting ducklings that are being picked to death by illegally dumped turtles—she’s made of tough stuff.

Since 2016, Smith has saved more than 1,000 domestic and wild animals. “We rescue 200 to 300 animals a year between two active trappers. We have six foster parents, including myself and Caitlin. We’re in desperate need for more,” she says. “My daughter, Skye Smith, is the only other person involved in the dayto-day rescue.”

Larry’s remarkable recovery – before and after.

THE KING OF STRAYS

Smith spent two and a half years trying to capture a Golden Retriever Anatolian Shepherd mix named Larry. Four years ago, he appeared on the streets of El Mirage, Arizona. He was the protector of all the neighborhood strays. “Like most street dogs, his fear of humans really hampered our rescue efforts,” she says. At 100 pounds, Larry was too large to fit in a traditional trap. They

tried herding him into a yard. He jumped the fence. He also managed to elude a $5,000 drop net, a custom drop trap and a jumbo trap.

In the process of capturing Larry, 80 other animals from the surrounding area were rescued by SSR. “Seniors, pregnant dogs, litters and litters of Larry’s babies, fluffy dogs, grouchy dogs…

Pound Advice

The Dachshund said, “Get a long little doggie.”

“Pick me, pick me,” said the Pekinese.

“There’s no breed better,” said the Irish Setter.

With this, I do agree.

But I came for a friend, not a pedigree.

My decision is clear cut.

See the one who’s wagging his tail?

I’m going home with the mutt!

Y our dog is doing something funny or looking particularly regal, handsome or beauteous and you’d love to capture the moment. Or, your pet blesses you with an intimate, soulful gaze that, without saying a word, speaks volumes. “I wish I had my phone or camera right now.” But you don’t. And when you do, taking really good photos of animals is not always an easy feat.

Vespyr, owner of Pawsitive Vibes Photography, LLC, specializes in capturing the true character of her subjects. With experience and instinctive positive rapport, she makes her subjects feel at ease. Then, it’s all about location, location, location. While she does take photos indoors as well, Vespyr’s photo shoots of pets are primarily done outdoors. “Natural light produces the most beautiful photography,” she says. She finds that the best opportunity for a great shot is when a pet has the opportunity to be themselves and that happens when they are in a familiar environment like their own backyard, park, or a favorite spot.

The products used by Pawsitive Vibes to preserve photographs are produced by selected imaging studios used only by professionals—resulting in stunning, high-quality fine art. Customers have a vast selection

wheelchairs, help with chores such as laundry and more. The program is so successful there is a waiting list of more than 100 disabled veterans. Since Patriot PAWS is able to house and train only 25 dogs at a time on its Rockwall campus, it partners with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to help care for and train an additional 35 dogs through its Prison Training Program. Additionally, the Aggieland satellite program on the Texas A&M campus provides further support.

Because the need is so great and it

Pets for Patriots works with animal shelters and rescue organizations to connect active military and veterans with dogs and cats that typically have a tough time getting adopted, including adults, special needs pets, large breed dogs and those who are chronically homeless, and provides ongoing discounts on pet-related goods and services, such as food and high-quality veterinary care. To qualify for application, veterans must live within 40 driving miles of a shelter or rescue organization that partners with Pets for Patriots—there

According to the Wounded Warrior Project, more than 3 million military veterans have sustained visible and invisible injuries, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) since September 11, 2001. Many more suffer from loneliness and simply need a companion. Dogs can help, and several organizations have stepped up to match veterans in need with the dogs that can make their lives better.

Dogs4Vets

Thirty-five percent of Arizona’s 96,000 veterans have serious disabilities. Dogs4Vets trains certified service dogs to help these veterans lead more productive lives. Veterans can either provide their own dog or request help locating one through a shelter, rescue organization or breeder. Either way, services are provided free of charge (with the exception of a $25 holding fee for certification).

When new classes start every March and September at the program’s training center in Gilbert,

Arizona, veterans and their dogs spend 20 weeks learning the basics before learning to work as a team in public. In the final phase, dogs learn to complete specific tasks for their partner as well as to react to changes in their body language, stress hormone chemicals and voice. The program doesn’t end there, though. Veterans and their dogs can return biweekly for classes for the rest of their lives. In many ways, the program becomes an informal support group for these veterans, connecting them to others facing similar hardships.

If you’d like to help support Dogs4Vets, you can make a donation to the nonprofit organization through the Arizona Charitable Tax Credit. dogs4vets.org

Patriot PAWS Service Dogs

costs so much to train a service dog, Patriot PAWS welcomes donations and volunteers. The easiest way to donate is by making a one-time or monthly donation online through the program’s website. You can also purchase a brick for the Rockwall campus garden or host a fundraising event, including a birthday or wedding, to support Patriot PAWS. Or, you can volunteer by helping on the campus with administrative tasks, cleaning kennels, improving the facilities and similar tasks.

You can also serve as a program ambassador at events and even foster puppies. To be considered for any of these opportunities, apply online.

If you’re a veteran, Patriot PAWS has a volunteer program especially for veterans called Veterans for PAWS Corps. Through the program, you can spend time with Patriot PAWS dogs, visit other veterans and assist with special projects. patriotpaws.org

Pets for Patriots

Not every veteran needs specific tasks performed by a highly-trained animal; some just need a companion or a pet for emotional support.

are five in the Phoenix area—and 15 driving miles of a participating veterinary clinic. Once approved, they will receive a letter directing them to a partnering shelter where they can choose an eligible animal. Pets for Patriots will then send the veteran a $150 gift card to help offset the initial expenses of pet guardianship, provide access to discounts and follow up with them for one year.

Pets for Patriots’ website best sums up what the organization is about: “Every day 20 veterans take their own lives. Every eight seconds a dog or cat is put to death for lack of anyone to adopt them. Companion pet adoption saves two lives.” petsforpatriots.org

Pets for Vets

With chapters throughout the country, Pets for Vets also matches veterans in need of a companion with shelter dogs and cats in need of a home. Rather than having veterans choose their pet and potentially bring home an animal that doesn’t fit their personality or lifestyle, Pets for Vets selects the animal for them based on interviews and home visits.

Professional trainers then work with the dog, teaching them basic commands, if they don’t already know them, and preparing them for life as a companion. By the time the veteran meets their new companion, the bond is often so strong the dogs instinctively perform tasks they weren’t trained to do, such as waking them from a nightmare.

To date, Pets for Vets has successfully brought together more than 300 veterans—most suffering from PTSD, traumatic brain injuries, anxiety or depression—and animals who unconditionally love, comfort and support them.

You can help support Pets for Vets through online donations, purchasing t-shirts and other Pets for Vets merchandise or by volunteering to serve as a chapter director, foster home, social media guru, fundraiser and more. petsforvets.com

Veterans StandDown

From time to time, veterans may find themselves struggling financially. Veterans StandDown connects these veterans to community services and organizations that can help at one- to three-day events throughout the state.

One of those organizations that regularly attends Veterans StandDown events is Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry. The organization provides not only dog food to veterans at these events but also leashes, collars, beds and toys and can answer questions and make referrals.

Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry president CJ Anderson says her goal is to help veterans who are struggling financially to keep their pets, whether that pet is a dog, cat, guinea pig, bird or whatever, because animals help veterans stay connected.

“We really work with them to help them keep their pets,” she says. “Pets make such a difference. You may be going through something bad, but your pet doesn’t focus on the bad thing that happened yesterday. They just want food now, pets now, walks now. They focus on now. Pets keep people’s eyes looking forward.” emptybowlpetfoodpantry.org/veterans-programs.html

PET-NUPS AND ESTATE PLANNING FOR PETS

Planning today for the future of your pet

When your romance turns rotten or your health takes a nosedive, you feel like you’re walking on a tightrope, without a harness or a safety net. As you try to strike the right balance between your anxiety and your depression, you might forget that it’s no easy ride for your fur babies either. They can be used as pawns in legal proceedings or left homeless with behavioral problems, feeling confused and distressed.

Before you hit rock bottom, make solid arrangements for your furry, feathered or finned family members, ensuring their continued care and well-being.

PET-NUPS

“Forget ‘who gets the kids,’” says Janet Shamlian, a CBS News correspondent based in Houston, Texas. “The new battle in divorce court is the fight over Fido. Messy pet custody cases are on the rise across the country.” Last year, nearly 30,000 divorce cases involved a pet custody dispute, according to a study published by Direct Line Pet Insurance.

The survey, which included 2,000 pet owners and over 100 lawyers, found that a quarter of pet owners would give their former spouses’ pets to a shelter, one in six would sell them and a similar figure would consider having them put down. “Without an agreement—either in the form of a pet-nup or a divorce agreement—the judge decides what happens to your pet,” says Estate Planning Attorney Libby Banks from Phoenix, Arizona. “That gives the

control to someone who doesn’t know the relationship you have with your pet and who only hears a short bit of

evidence before deciding who gets it.”

Despite fur parents considering their four-legged friends to be children, in the eyes of the law pets are simply regarded as personal property. For example, if you have a bill of sale or an adoption

relationship, and he stays with me if we ever break up. It can also be a more complex document. For two people who are adopting a pet together, there may be provisions for visitation, shared custody, and who pays for medical bills,” she says. “A pet-nup can even include details such as what type of food the pet may eat and which veterinarian the pet will see.”

PET TRUSTS

A pet parent’s love transcends death—according to the National Cremation Society, 12 percent of pet owners include Fluffy in their wills. They usually state that they want a trusted friend or family member to care for their pets without any monetary compensation.

Your will can

agreement, you have the right to take the pet. “For an unregistered pet, it may just go to the person who packs up and takes the pet with him or her. If that happens, the police won’t get involved to help you get your pet back,”

Banks says.

While you shouldn’t really expect the courts to use their power to enforce a pet prenup, it can be as simple as saying, “I brought Felix into our

also include a pet trust, which can be especially important for long-lived pets like tortoises and parrots. “It’s only created on the death of the person who made the will,” Banks says. “It can also be beneficial when the pet is expensive to keep, such as a horse. With a pet trust, you also can set aside money that’s to be used solely for their proper food, veterinarian care and everyday maintenance.”

“A living trust can be named as a beneficiary on a life insurance policy,” says Laura Taylor, Estate Planning and Probate Attorney in Prescott, Arizona.

The brewery sponsored Kathy to attend a workshop last summer in Utah to get an official training certification.

“The trust document itself would need to give clear instructions as to what should happen with the pet, as well as provide for a stipend to the guardian of the pet.”

You can also decide what happens with the money that remains after your pet passes away. If you decide to name your pet’s caregiver as the “remainder beneficiary,” he or she might scrimp on the money paid for your pet’s care. So consider choosing a different person or a charity instead. “There may be certain tax ramifications of naming a living trust as a beneficiary,” Taylor says, “so it’s best to consult with an accountant regarding whether it makes sense to go this route.”

“If you don’t make a plan for your pet, it’s going to be up to your family or the executor of your estate.” Owners could request that their pets be put down. But it’s often ruled invalid by the legal system when the animal is young or in good health and when other humane alternatives are available. For a fee or donation, there are pet retirement homes and no-kill shelters. “If those places are full, your family may have no choice but to take the pet to the pound,” she says.

If you have a resolution or to-do list for the first of the new year, consider adding what you need to do to provide for the future of your pet. Then get it done and enjoy the peace of mind it brings.

O.H.S.O. - Phoenix, Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Gilbert

While many breweries hold a special place in their hearts (and patios) for dogs, no one embraces the full “canineto-the-nines” spirit quite like O.H.S.O. With a dedicated K-9 social director on staff, O.H.S.O.’s goal is to make a real difference in the lives of dogs.

O.H.S.O., which stands for Outrageous Homebrewers Social Outpost, provides personalized water bowls, fountain/spray stations at 3 of the 4 locations and free dog treats made from spent brewing grain. Additionally, leashes, dog-friendly tennis balls and

At all four locations, O.H.S.O. hosts a monthly giveback where 20 percent of patrons’ checks are donated directly to the rescue of choice. Educational events happen regularly, including a recent “Boom Free Fourth,” partnering up with Mayday Pit Bull Rescue and Advocacy. The goal was to bring awareness of negative repercussions of fireworks to dogs and many Veterans with PTSD. This summer, O.H.S.O. held an event with Creative Contributions to help fund medical issues with MCACC shelter dogs.

AZK9 holds their yearly Bail Out fundraiser at O.H.S.O. The brewery helps by hosting the event and by donating food and drinks. During the summer months, members of the charity are invited to brew a beer with O.H.S.O.’s brewer, proceeds of which allow the rescue to raise money and awareness.

Each location features a full-service restaurant with beers brewed on site at each location besides Scottsdale, which houses its own distillery. Come for the food, stay for the beer!

The Gift of SHOPPING THRIFT

Shop and donate at Humane Society Thrift Stores to help save lives

Thrift stores are part of a $14.4 billion industry that is seeing continued growth, according to a recent IBISWorld report. Not to be confused with secondhand and resale shops, the thrift store industry only includes nonprofit thrift stores that are legally affiliated with a charity. The thrift store popularity and growth are linked to the millennial population, those born between 1981 and 1996, who like to shop with businesses that donate to charities. Enter the Arizona and Yavapai Humane Societies.

The Arizona Humane Society

The Arizona Humane Society (AHS) started their thrift shop arm more than 40 years ago to help offset the costs of housing, feeding and rehabilitating homeless animals. Today, they take in about $450,000 annually from the AHS Thrift Stores—brick and mortar and the e-commerce site. “With the average cost of care per animal hovering around $1,000, the money raised saves nearly 450 animal lives,” said Kelsey Dickerson, AHS spokesperson. She added that the money raised also allows for a Bottle Baby Intensive Care Unit, which is a 24-hour operation that cares for and saves orphaned and abandoned kittens during Arizona’s elongated kitten season. And $500 keeps one of their Emergency Animal Medical Technician™ trucks on the road for one week. “The emergency trucks rescued approximately 11,000 animals last year and went on more than 7,400 calls of suspected animal cruelty,” Dickerson said.

Seven years ago, Greg Virga, AHS Thrift Store and e-commerce manager, started using eBay as an outlet for

donated higher-end items and found that it was a lucrative way to raise additional funds for the humane society. Today there is an eBay team. “We want people to know that we are very good stewards of their donations,” Virga said.

“With the average cost of care per animal hovering around $1,000, the money raised saves nearly 450 animal lives.”

AHS operates two brick and mortar thrift stores, one in Mesa at 1110 West Southern Avenue and one in Phoenix at 13401 North Cave Creek Road. Donations can be picked up with a minimum of six large bags/boxes of clothing items or one piece of furniture.

Yavapai Humane Society Thrift Store

North of the Valley in Prescott is the Yavapai Humane Society Thrift Store. They raise approximately $350,000 annually from their thrift store and e-commerce site listings, such as Etsy, craigslist and eBay. According to store director Michael Drew, “the money raised helps offset the cost of the

a live release rate between 95–97.5 percent. They also operate the Equine Center in Chino Valley, which follows the same model as the one for dogs and cats. The Yavapai Humane Society contracts with three municipal animal control operations: the Yavapai Sheriff’s Office and the Prescott and Prescott Valley Police Departments.

Currently, the Yavapai Humane Society has one 7,200-square-foot thrift store located at 1601 Iron Springs Road in Prescott. It offers several sections for customers to peruse, including a tack/western clothing section, higherend boutique clothing section, jewelry, antiques, furniture, electronic items and more. Recently, the Thrift Store received an “out of the blue” donation of property including furnishings and collectibles.

Drew is excited about a raffle they are currently holding at the Thrift Store to celebrate the fifth anniversary of moving to the present location and ten years since the opening of the original Thrift Store. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the Thrift Store for the drawing on October 12th with the winner getting $500 to spend in the store.

so many dogs,” she says. “We always joked that Larry didn’t want to be captured because he thought we were trying to collect child support.”

Then Larry was mauled by a coyote. His ear was completely mangled. All the skin on his head had been ripped off. “He was covered with thousands of maggots,” Smith says. “We knew that Larry’s capture would be hard and scary. There was potential for us to get hurt.”

With the assistance of Kylie Steele from Rubicon Rescue in Mesa, Arizona, Larry was finally captured. Steele was able to corral the elusive vagabond into a fenced yard where Smith caught him with a hand net. The women rushed Larry to Arrow Animal Hospital in Glendale, Arizona,

where just a few days later, his right ear was amputated and he was neutered.

HOMEWARD BOUND

Larry recuperated at the Smiths where he learned to sit, shake and beg for treats. “He became a house dog and now doesn’t like to step foot outside,” she

says. He was recently adopted by Steele, who understands the severity of his deep-rooted insecurities. “Larry loves being part of a pack. It was so important for him to be part of a large dog family,” Smith says. “He has severe anxiety when other animals aren’t around. He loves his new mom and family.”
