Hochul highlights small businesses as Small Business Month nears end

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on May 26 called attention to National Small Business Month, which was rapidly coming to an end with the end of the month. She said that Empire State Development runs a series of programs designed to help entrepreneurs start new businesses in the state and that under her administration since 2023 more than $1 billion had been made available to them.

“Small businesses are the lifeblood of New York, and my administration has made historic investments to make sure they have everything they need to succeed,” Hochul said. “More than $1 billion in capital deployed, a record MWBE (minority and women-owned business enterprise) utilization rate and new rounds of innovation grants opening doors for entrepreneurs across every region of the state. This is what our small businesses deserve, and we will keep delivering.”

According to Hochul’s office, New York small businesses, those with fewer than 100 employees, account for 98% of all businesses in the state and employ nearly 40% of the private-sector workforce.

Among the programs Hochul highlighted as helping small businesses is NY Ventures, which manages $320 million of venture capital for funding innovative entrepreneurs. Another is the Main Street Capital Loan Fund, which provides loans of up to $100,000 to startups and early-stage businesses, with a focus on communities that have historically lacked access to affordable credit.

Hope Knight, president and CEO of Empire State Development (ESD) said, “New York's small businesses are the engines of our communities, and we are proud to celebrate the innovation, creativity and resilience of our entrepreneurs this month and every month.”

“Small businesses are the lifeblood of New York — and we’re delivering the funding and support they need to succeed.”

Since 2023, ESD's Capital Access team has facilitated more than 5,271 transactions totaling over $1 billion in capital through the Low Interest Capital (LINC) program, and other financing initiatives designed to expand access to credit for small businesses in the state.

New York State Department of Labor Commissioner Roberta Reardon urged small businesses to take advantage of the many free services her department offers.

Multi-family developments proposed for Norwalk

The City of Norwalk has been reviewing applications to construct two multi-family projects that are both represented by Attorney Adam Blank of the Stamford-based law firm Wofsey, Rosen, Kweskin & Kuriansky, LLP. One of the projects is by the entity 35 Chapel LLC and is located at 35 Chapel St. in Norwalk. The other is by Brooklawn Contractors LLC and is located at 274 East Ave. in the city.

The plan for 35 Chapel St. includes an 8-unit multi-family development that Blank notes is permitted as of right in the CD-3 zone. There would be site improvements that include landscaping, grading, pedestrian walkways, and stormwater management facilities. A residential structure that had been on the property was demolished and the site currently is vacant.

Blank said that the proposed development would have units with three bedrooms. Blank said that under zoning, 1.3 parking spaces are required per dwelling unit for a total of 11 required parking spaces. He said that this proposed development includes sufficient parking with 14 garaged spaces.

He pointed out that the site is 200 feet from the Norwalk River and that the project does not disturb coastal resources, incorporates modern stormwater treatment practices and erosion control measures, and is consistent with the Con-

necticut Coastal Management Act that encourages the concentration of development in areas that are already served by existing infrastructure.

“Stormwater runoff from the parking areas will be addressed by a subsurface infiltration gallery system,” Blank said. “Approximately half of the stormwater from the roof areas will be directed to the central infiltration system. The proposed stormwater management system adequately captures and retains runoff associated with the increase in impervious surfaces.”

The Brooklawn Contractors development at 274 East Ave. is on a site of approximately 0.24-acre that is currently vacant. The single-family home that had been on the site was demolished. There are three new buildings proposed each with two units. Each unit would have an associated garage.

Greenwich Country Day School looking to add housing units

“GCDS is expanding faculty housing and child care to better support teachers amid ongoing affordability challenges.”

Greenwich Country Day School, Inc. (GCDS) is planning to seek approvals from the Greenwich Planning and Zoning Commission to construct additional staff housing units and an addition to the school’s existing faculty day care center at GCDS’s Schwarz Campus, located at 23 Fairfield Road. The school asked for a pre-application review of what it is planning so that it could hear non-binding reaction from members of the commission.

GCDS currently operates on four parcels. An approximately 33.5-acre site located 401 Old Church Road is the school’s main campus. A 41.5-acre property located at 23 and 47 Fairfield Road, known as the school’s “Schwarz Campus,” is directly across the street from the main campus and supports

The proposed new construction would be on the Schwarz Campus. Sloping topography on the campus divides the site into two separate development areas. The upper, westerly portion of the site is accessed from Fairfield Road. The lower, easterly portion of the site is primarily accessed from Cardinal Road.

The entire Schwarz Campus is bounded to the northwest and northeast by the Greenwich Country Club, to the east by Cardinal Road and the Greenwich Skating Club, and to the southwest by Fairfield Road.

The lower portion of the site has several of the school’s playing fields, small accessory structures, and parking areas. The upper portion of the site is where the proposed construction would take place. This portion of the

“While faculty needs have incrementally increased since 2019, the school’s housing inventory has not materially changed during this same time period, resulting in a gap relative to the school’s long-standing housing objective of accommodating approximately 70 to 80% of eligible teachers through a combination of on-campus and nearby housing resources,” GCDS told the Planning Commission. “As the commission is aware, the Fairfield County housing market presents well-documented affordability and availability challenges for educational employees. Accordingly, GCDS strives to provide a substantial percentage of its teaching staff with housing. This practice, employed by many peer institutions, allows schools to retain high-caliber teachers who would otherwise not be able to afford to live in close proximity to the school. Providing proximate faculty housing serves several important institutional and community objectives.”

Schwarz Campus property. In addition, the school proposes to construct an addition to its faculty day care facility. The project would include a new 2-1/2 story, 10,225 square feet, 8-unit prefabricated apartment-style building located just north of the existing “Schwarz House.” There also would be 12 new prefabricated 3-bedroom townhouse units in four new buildings. There would be a new prefabricated 2,853-square-feet addition to the existing 2,000-square-feet faculty day care facility.

There also would be construction of 28 new parking spaces, with three along a circular drive by the new apartment building and 25 spaces in a new parking lot located south of the new townhouses to support residents of the apartments and townhouses as well as their guests.

There would be new lighting and landscaping typical of what is found in new residential developments in Greenwich. There would be stormwater management improvements along with improvements to infrastructure for water, sanitary sewer, electric, and natural gas services.

Upon completion, the property would have a total of 64 residential units with a total of 116 bedrooms and a total of 142 parking spaces.

IBM and federal government in $2B deal for building quantum computing wafers

Armonk-based IBM and the U.S. Department of Commerce have signed a Letter of Intent to build a $2 billion American quantum chip foundry through the new company Anderon that IBM founded in Albany. The government will provide IBM with $1 billion from the CHIPS incentive, established by the CHIPS and Science Act that was intended to stimulate computer chip manufacturing in the U.S. IBM will contribute the other $1 billion in cash to the effort along with intellectual property, other assets and personnel.

The initiative is described by IBM and the government as one of the most significant commitments by the U.S. government to date in quantum computing research and development with a goal

of positioning the U.S. to manufacture most of the world’s quantum computing wafers.

BM 300 millimeter quantum wafer.

The plan is for Anderon to build and operate a state-of-the-art 300-millimeter quantum wafer foundry. Anderon would offer the quantum wafers it produces to multiple quantum technology vendors across the world. It is expected that the foundry would be built at the NY Creates’ Albany NanoTech Complex. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said, “These strategic quantum technology investments will build

on our domestic industry, creating thousands of high-paying American jobs while advancing American quantum capabilities.”

According to Arvind Krishna, chairman and CEO of IBM, “IBM has pioneered quantum computing for decades. Our work in silicon wafer fabrication has been a key to IBM's success and will be critical to enable a broader quantum technology landscape that will reshape global innovation and economic competitiveness. With the support of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Anderon will be well-positioned to fuel America's fast-growing quantum technology industry.”

Quantum computing already is being used to solve complex problems that are challenging for even today’s supercomputers. It is expected to enable breakthroughs in materials science,

chemistry, optimization, and cybersecurity, among other areas.

IBM has a Quantum Computer Center in Poughkeepsie that currently has more than 20 quantum systems in operation.

To date, IBM has deployed over 90 quantum systems, including more quantum computers than reported by all other industry players across the globe combined. More than 325 Fortune 500 companies, startups, universities, and government agencies already are using IBM’s quantum computers to tackle scientific challenges across chemistry, biology, materials science, and more. Many of them remotely access the IBM quantum computers in Poughkeepsie.

IBM and the Department of Commerce point out that the actual launch of Anderon is subject to the negotiation and execution of definitive documents by both parties in accordance with the letter of intent.

Lighting the path to a cultural city

Since the turn of the 21st century, as the increasing gentrification of New York City has spurred artists to seek more affordable studios and homes elsewhere, Peekskill has looked to position itself as a kind of SoHo North. Call it PoHo.

That long-nurtured dream will take another leap forward Thursday, June 25, through Sunday, June 28, as Peekskill makes its Upstate Art Weekend debut with “Enlighten Peekskill,” an array of public art seven years in the making that marks an extensive public-private partnership. When New York state awarded Peekskill a $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant in 2019, it earmarked $500,000 for public art. The National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, ArtsWestchester, Impact100/Westchester and local businesses all provided additional support.

The state selected the Hudson Valley Museum of Contemporary Art (HVMOCA), founded in Peekskill in 2004 by collectors Livia and Marc Straus, to administer the three “Enlighten Peekskill” facets, which include:

• “Illuminate Peekskill," organized by HVMOCA — light-illuminated sculptures focusing on beautifying and brightening local streets and improving public safety with art. Four sculptures have been installed to date;

• “Making Connections,” organized by the Peekskill Arts Alliance — murals creating a way-finding art corridor that highlights key themes from Peekskill’s history and interacts with its architecture. Eleven murals

have been added to Peekskill’s cityscape, with work from 36 artists.

• “Five Elements Arches," created by artists Christine Knowlton and Candace Winter, with five murals near the train station on South Street greeting visitors in a set of collaged images that reflects the seasons’ colors and the work of more than 1,500 local hands.

A post-industrial city, Peekskill struggled with disinvestment in the second half of the 20th century. Thus far, this century has been a different story as the city has blossomed as a center for the arts, presenting emerging and recognized visual and performing artists. Its Open Studios, held each June — this year Sat-

urday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, from noon to 5 p.m. — draws about a thousand visitors annually. Median housing values have more than doubled over the past 25 years, since dedicated artist live/work spaces were zoned and constructed. Still, the city remains a work in progress.

HVMOCA’s Livia Straus was an early believer, taking a 12,000-square-foot former home improvement warehouse and creating a space with her husband that would not only house their contemporary art collection but would use it as a springboard for though-provoking shows on a variety of themes: “Our goal since opening the museum has been to instill new energy, introduce visitors to the natural beauty of the location and introduce intensive educational programming based in the arts and the intersection of the arts with history and culture. We’ve also wanted to expose a larger audience to Peekskill’s substantial local artist population. Along with the museum’s other efforts, we are really pleased with what the ‘Enlighten’ collaboration is bringing to the city.”

Civic as well as arts leaders are working to ensure that Peekskill’s reputation as an arts destination continues to grow, spotlighting underrepresented artists as well as established ones. To that end, the city created the Peekskill Arts Council. Said Peter Erwin, assistant director of planning and development: “We are a mid-sized Hudson River city with an unusually significant investment in public art, and the arts council will ensure that the art is well-curated, is cultivated and is maintained.”

Multimedia artist Carla Rae Johnson holds a monthly salon where artists can find mutual support and stimulation. Along with other arts events in Peekskill, including those at the Paramount Center for the Arts, the salons help to foster what Johnson calls “…an engaged and active artist community.”

For her and other artists, who will light the way to more cultural offerings, the fruition of the public art project is another chapter in an unfolding story.

“We are on the brink of a new era,” said landscape painter and muralist Larry D’Amico, who with ceramicist and former Peekskill Arts Alliance President Robin Kline shepherded the mural project. “We’ve seen great growth in PAA membership, now at more than 200. I am thrilled with the quality of murals both from members and outside artists, and I only expect more.”

Added Kline: “This public display enhances the city’s arts reputation that draws writers, poets, visual artists and performers, and answers the question, ‘Where’s the art?’”

A ribbon-cutting and guided art trail walk will kick off festivities for “Enlighten Peekskill,” part of Upstate Arts Weekend, on Thursday, June 25, at 4:30 p.m. from The Central, 300 Railroad Ave., followed by a grand opening and Art Trail Tour with performances on Friday, June 26, starting at 5:30 p.m., and artist panels on Sunday, June 28, from noon to 3 p.m. at HVMOCA, 1701 Main St.

Plan to divide former Party City building at Port Chester shopping center

The owner of the Gateway Port Chester Shopping Center on Boston Post Road in Port Chester is asking the village for approval to redevelop a building formerly occupied by Party City into spaces for up to four tenants. The property owner is M&J Wilkow Ltd. based in Chicago.

Party City in Port Chester closed early last year, following the company Party City Holdco filing for bankruptcy late in 2024 following a previous Chapter 11 filing in 2023. The second filing was to liquidate, and included plans for the closing of all of Party City's approximately 700 retail locations.

The former Party City building at the Gateway Port Chester Shopping Center is 10,052 square feet and the exterior would be redone on three sides. There also would be new aluminum storefront awnings and outdoor seating areas. One of the four new units was described as likely being a 1,976 square feet coffee shop

or quick service food establishment. A unit of 3,969 square feet would be a casual sit-down restaurant, possibly a pizza restaurant with associated sports bar. The other two units, 1,530 square feet and 1,770 square feet, are anticipated to be retail stores.

Architect Heather Michael Grew told the Port Chester Planning Commission that the building is oriented on a north/south axis with its frontage facing the interior of the shopping center.

“We do intend to add some exterior patio for outside seating for the restaurants,” Grew said and added that new pole lighting would illuminate the pedestrian paths and the patio seating. She said that new handicapped parking spaces would be added in close proximity to the building.

“The intent is to make this whole site more ADA accessible,” Grew said. She pointed out that while the plan calls for removing 38 parking spaces from what’s available in the

shopping center, it still would have 1,806 spaces available which is 260 more than the 1,660 spaces that the village requires.

Members of the Planning Commission and village staff called for additional data on vehicular trips that would be generated by the new

establishments in comparison with what Party City had done and how much parking the customers for each new tenant might be expected to use. It also was suggested that a handicapped access ramp be added to the right side of the building's front where steps are shown.

A Rockland video production and promotions company has sued a prominent podiatrist for allegedly pirating a commercial.

SR Video Pictures Ltd., Haverstraw, accused Dr. Bruce Pinker and Progressive Foot Care P.C. of copyright infringement, in a complaint filed on May 7 in U.S. District Court, White Plains.

A frame-by-frame comparison of a SR Video commercial produced for Pinker to a new commercial produced by a competitor demonstrates, the complaint states, "substantially similar selection, arrangement, staging, sequencing, framing and audiovisual choices."

Progressive Foot Care has offices

in New City, in Rockland County, and in White Plains.

SR Video has been producing commercials for Progressive Foot Care for 15 years, according to the complaint, often using the tag line, "Hi, I'm Dr. Pinker," to introduce podiatry procedures such as laser treatment of toenail fungus. It charged a modest fee, or no fee, to produce the commercials, and collected a percentage of the fees charged by cable TV outlets for placing the commercials.

Last August, SR Video produced a 30-second commercial promoting treatment of bunions, hammer toes, toenail fungus, plantar fasciitis, and diabetic neuropathy.

Pinker notified SR Video on Aug. 21 that a new media agency would manage TV advertising, the complaint states, and allegedly asserted that he owned the commercials that had been produced and would continue to use them.

SR Video replied that it was not paid for the last commercial. It owns the copyright. And it has not authorized reproduction, broadcast, or public dissemination of the work.

Then a new producer, that SR Video has not identified yet, placed a commercial for broadcast on local cable TV channels, the complaint states.

A frame-by-frame comparison of both versions reveals a nearly identical script, according to the complaint,

as well as substantially similar structure, scenes, sequencing and expressive elements.

SR Video accused Pinker and Progressive Foot Care of copyright infringement, breach of implied-in-fact contract, and unjust enrichment. It is asking the court to stop the podiatry practice from using the new commercial, order destruction or impoundment of the commercial, and award unspecified monetary damages. Pinker and Progressive Foot Care did not reply to a message asking for their side of the story.

SR Video is represented by Orangeburg attorneys Angelo Notaro, John Zaccaria, and Alan Federbush.

Travel Talk — Villa Miraé, Antibes, France

“When good Americans die, they go to Paris,” Oscar Wilde famously quipped, although over the summer months he might have reworked it: “When especially good Americans die, they go to the Riviera.”

Because, come the summer, the French Riviera, made fashionable by the British aristocracy toward the end of the 19th century – a popularity consolidated by well-heeled, well-connected and occasionally charmingly dissolute Americans in the Roaring ’20s – really is heaven.

But with around 150 miles of beaches and coastline, the next question is where to go – or perhaps, where to base yourself?

My answer to that is Antibes, which lies between Nice, capital of the Côte d’Azur and Cannes. Neither as urban as the former nor as flash as the latter, it’s the perfect size resort. And it’s a gem.

Antibes has a 16th-century fort and a magnificent port, a beautiful Promenade du Soleil and graceful public gardens. And culturally, Antibes punches well above its weight, with a rich offering that includes superb musical events, artist trails and splendid museums – one of which is the town’s highly regarded Picasso Museum.

Antibes also has villas and mansions galore, many of them (or their gardens) open to the public, like the Villa

Eilenroc – once owned by American businessman Louis-Dudley Beaumont. Or the sienna-colored castle, Villa la Vigie, once owned by the American gas magnate and philanthropist Frank Jay Gould and his wife, Florence. (His local claim to fame was that he and his siblings inherited Lyndhurst in Tarrytown from their father, railroad tycoon Jay Gould.) And then there’s the glorious, all-white Château des Juan-les-Pins, built around 1860, once the residence of Queen Emilie of Saxony and later the home of Rudolf Valentino.

Yes, you may well sigh.

Antibes–Juan–Les–Pins, as the town is correctly styled, incorporating its smaller but busier neighbor “Juan,” also has excellent restaurants and stores – from big name fashion houses to charming independents – as well as one of the best outdoor food markets on the Riviera, and yet it improbably retains an almost village-y vibe.

And as if all of this were not enough, Antibes has a beautiful new hotel, Villa Miraé, open just a year and a member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux association. It’s located in Cap d’Antibes, an essentially calm, excusive promontory, which has a kind of discreet, King’s Point, Long Island, feel to it, but with palm trees, bougainvillea, plumbago and agapanthus replacing Long Island’s, maples, ferns and black-eyed Susans.

The hotel was celebrating its first birthday on the evening I arrived, and so was en fête, which is to say gently partying. This came as a surprise to me, but a delightful one. A jazz band played Harry Styles and Ed Sheeran numbers in a kind of slow-tempo smooch, while waiters circulated among the well-dressed guests, making figures of eight with their trays of mini croque monsieurs and strips of pissaladière, the classic Niçois preparation of tomato and anchovy on flatbread. Bartenders poured glasses of Laurent-Perrier Brut Champagne from magnums, and celebrity chef Mauro Colagreco, whose 3-Michelin star restaurant Mirazur is along the coast in Menton, and who is taking over the restaurants at Villa Miraé, introduced his kitchen brigade. It was a night to remember and a great start to my stay.

Almost everything was local because, in the South of France, “local” tends to mean the best there is.

But breakfast was only a prelude to what was to come. At lunch at the hotel’s Miraé terrace restaurant, carpaccio of gamberoni, spotlighting raw prawns, followed by a slow cooked shoulder of lamb, perfumed with the herbs of Provence, were the standouts, while at dinner at Amarines, the hotel’s “gastronomic” restaurant, wonderful local fish and shellfish, along with Colagreco’s signature “tiger” veal – from a rare breed of Corsican cattle – took center stage.

“what really survives in Antibes is not glamour exactly but the memory of people who once believed in it completely.”

Next morning, breakfast in the Villa Miraé’s courtyard was quite the sensory experience, with buttery baby croissants, superb jams, yogurt from cows which I was told grazed nearby, omelettes made to order on the terrace with eggs from happy hens – and beautiful fruit, all just coming to season.

Villa Miraé’s swimming pool isn’t huge, and therein lies its beauty – just the right amount of space you need between your own luxurious chaise longue and your neighbor’s but still an intimate, all-pervading pool ambiance. And for beach lovers, there is a private deck across the street, with beach access, (although it should be noted that the area behind the beach is currently undergoing a major redevelopment). The hotel also has a small wellness center, located in a cabin in the grounds.

Did I mention the guest rooms? There are 35 of them, each with its own private terrace. I was hardly ever in my mine, which was a pity, because it was beautifully appointed, with its own dressing room, sitting area and, yes, a generously-sized terrace. Using frescoes and mosaics inspired by the Azurean heritage and motifs paying homage to Jean Cocteau and Henri Matisse, French-born designer Oscar Lucien Ono has done a wonderful job, not only in the guest rooms and suites but throughout the entire property. I found Villa Miraé to be thoroughly friendly, sophisticated certainly but subtle and restrained. But, of course, if it’s high-octane glamour you’re after (and if you’re happy to pay an arm and a leg for a glass of Provençal wine or a gin and tonic, in contrast to Villa Miraé’s relatively modest prices), you can always visit the nearby world-famous Hôtel du Cap-Eden-Roc, which was the inspiration for Gausse’s Hotel des Étrangers in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “Tender is the Night.”

Then again, no matter where you stay, or dine, or simply hang out, what really survives in Antibes is not glamour exactly but the memory of people who once believed in it completely. And that is certainly good enough for me.

A wine lover’s life-changing trip to Sicily

How many life-changing moments is a person likely to encounter? I just returned from the trip to Sicily and can honestly say it feels life-changing, so much so that upon my return I  bought several Sicilian wines, including a few Marsalas for both tasting and cooking. And I Googled “recipes utilizing Marsala” and found a lovely recipe for shrimp Marsala. I opened a white and a red wine while cooking, enjoying the flavors from the wines and the intoxicating aromas from the stovetop.

Sicily has been on my bucket list for decades and it finally happened. I was invited to the annual Sicilia en Primeur 2026 promoted by Assovini Sicilia to taste new wine releases of Sicily, to meet the owners and winemaker, and to learn about this beguiling island. The Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Moors, Arabs and Normans all were attracted to the fertile and volcanic soils of Sicily and lived and ruled there, forever leaving their mark and culture, their architecture and their style. Then England, Spain, France and Italy passed it around until finally it landed under Italian dominion. Today Sicily holds seven UNESCO sites and Pantellaria has two UNESCO Intangible Heritage Concepts — one for training the Zibibbo white grape vines into bush vines, which are planted into 14-inch deep divot hollows below the soil surface to help keep the plants’ profile low. The second is for the Art of Dry Stonewalling, also designed to mitigate the island’s aggressive and predictable wind. The five-day event was choreographed with precision, giving the 100 wine journalists from 30-plus countries a chance to meet, taste and return home with an understanding of all things Sicilian. There were conferences explaining the history of their island’s wine flavors and culture. Next was a speed tasting (think speed dating) with producers and their current vintages. You sat, tasted, had a quick dialogue and moved on to the next winemaker you may have chosen. The following day was a technical tasting with a master list of 343 Sicilian and Pantellerian wines. The taster could ask the sommelier for any wine by producer, grape, region, vintage or price. It was a brilliant opportunity to deep-dive into these wines and explore the many differences between the grapes and regions of the area.

Days four and five we were bro -

ken up into smaller, more intimate groups for tours of cultural centers, medieval city centers and, of course, wineries. It felt like I won the lottery when I saw the wineries I would be visiting. On my list was a side trip to the island of Pantellaria to meet with José Rallo of Donnafugata winery. The following day we flew back to Palermo to have a vineyard tour, tasting and dinner at Fazio Winery and then to Gorghi Tondi Winery. All of these wines I had explored in the technical tasting room and some in the speed tasting room so I had developed some familiarity with them.

I had met José Rallo on the opening night at our small dinner table of eight. And then again at a large dinner at an unfinished Roman Catholic church where construction began in 1506. (Those laidback Sicilians.) On the island of Pantelleria, we had a late dinner with José and our group had a chance to taste different vintages of the Donnafugata Ben Ryé, a sun-dried Passito, or dessert wine, with food. Each of these Zibibbo wines showed honeyed lemon and a restrained and balanced sweetness with a velvety loveliness. The 2022 Isolano from the Carricante grape near Mt. Etna had a perfumy bright lemon zestiness – very refreshing. Another Donnafugata wine, Lighea Zibibbo from 2025, showed bright and fresh citrus with a vibrant fruitiness. And the Donnafugata Sul Vulcano from 2021, crafted from the Nerello Mascalese grape, offered soft prune flavors and fig with a pleasant mouthfeel.

“From speed tastings with 343 wines to vineyard visits across Etna and Pantelleria, Sicily reveals itself as a layered island where history, terroir, and tradition shape every glass poured.”

Back on mainland Sicily, we stopped at Casa Vinicola Fazio for a tour, a tasting and a beautiful homemade dinner at the Fazio family home. First, we jumped in the back of a pickup truck to the high point of the property to enjoy the views and see the layout of the vineyards followed by a tour of the olive trees the family planted. We were then brought to a beautiful tasting room to explore nine wines:

Fazio Blanc de Blancs — A dry, pleasant Chardonnay with a crisp, citrus flavor that includes orange peel.

Fazio Greber — A mostly Zibibbo, a sweetish white tasting of tropical fruit and orange blossom.

Fazio Solis Bianco — Winery co-owner Lilly Fazio’s favorite white wine, its gripping acidity offering lemon, grapefruit and subtle rosemary.

Fazio Mϋller Thurgau, featuring crisp lemon, good aromatics and a velvety mouthfeel.

Fazio Silvaris — A yummy vintage with fresh pomegranate, ripe cranberry and a deep garnet color.

Fazio Solis Rosso — A big hearty aromatic red with pleasant tannins.

Fazio Nero D’Avola — A dry yet sweet fruity wine.

Fazio Luce D’Oriente — A spicy Syrah replete with dark cherry, blackberry and ripe blueberry.

Fazio Cartesiano Rosso — A noble grape blend with some Nero D’Avola tasting of red cherry and other fresh fruits.

All of these wines are well made with enduring and endearing flavors that will capture your attention Tenuta Gorghi Tondi was our final visit. Owned and operated by two sisters, Annamaria and Clara Sala, the vineyard abuts a nature preserve

with a lake they gifted to the state. We tasted a Catarratto from 2025 with bright aromatics, salinity, minerality and a citrus backbone.

The next pour was the Grillo Reserve from 2024, showing bright fresh lemon with a creamy, floral acidity. Zibibbo was up next with a bright lemon zest, dry and puckery. The sisters’ 2025 Frappato Dumè featured fresh red fruit, restrained aromatics and light tannins as an easy drinking red. The 2024 Perricone offered dark blackberry and great aromatics with ripe currants. Their Sorelle Sala from 2022 Rosso Riserva had dark pure flavors, black cherry and prune with dark currants. And finally, Tenuta Gorghi Tondi has the only Botrytis fungi-affected wine in Sicily. It transforms this raisin-y Grillo grape into a delicious sweet wine of poached pear and lemon creaminess.

Buy the wines, buy the olive oil, buy the large salt-preserved capers. The wines are all priced attractively and your dollars will go a long way, especially if you shop somewhere that offers case discounts. All of the Sicilian and Pantellarian wines I tasted are worthy, are interesting. They all overdeliver, and most have a reasonable alcohol level of 14% or less.

I was expecting to find some alcohol-hot wines from this southern region, but island altitude helps moderate the alcohol. So maybe my trip wasn’t profoundly life-changing. But I will return. There is much to explore historically, geographically, architecturally, artistically and gastronomically. Sicily: Talk to me. I need more.

Tips for transforming a patio, balcony or deck into an outdoor oasis

You don’t need much space to create a bit of paradise on your balcony, patio or deck. Fill the space with a collection of plants that provide texture, color and privacy. Then add comfortable seating, a fountain and lighting for additional ambiance and relaxation.

Start by evaluating the space you want to transform and how the surrounding views and noise will affect your enjoyment. Before enclosing the whole space, identify the views you need to screen and those you want to keep. Perhaps a view of your favorite flower garden, the park across the street or your neighbor’s water feature extends your enjoyment beyond the limits of your garden oasis.

Use tall grasses, large tropical plants, vines trained on trellises and upright shrubs and trees to define the space. These can be grown in weather-proof containers if no in-ground planting space is available. Just make sure your balcony or deck can handle the weight of the planters once filled with soil and plants.

Select plants that provide multiple benefits. Look for plants that deliver several seasons of beauty with flowers, colorful foliage, seed heads and fall color. Include fragrant plants for

aromatherapy and those that attract butterflies and hummingbirds to add motion and color.

Decide how you plan to use the space. Are you longing for a quiet area to relax and read, one to entertain or a space to accommodate all your outdoor activities? Select furnishings with the color, form and style that will create your desired look and feel. Then select plants, containers and accessories that complement the furnishings for your outdoor oasis.

Add a stand-alone or wall-mounted fountain or container water garden to the space. The sound of moving water helps create a sense of peace and relaxation, calming the mind, reviving the spirit and masking noise pollution. No need to worry about mosquitoes taking residency in your water feature. Moving water is less appealing and adding an organic product like Summit Mosquito Dunks to water features prevents mosquitoes from breeding there. Just toss this donut-shaped cake of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) into the water. This naturally occurring bacteria only kills the mosquito larvae but doesn’t harm people, pets, fish or wildlife.

Further reduce mosquito problems by lighting a few citronella candles

and placing them near you and others enjoying the space. Use a fan to help keep you cool and the weak-flying mosquitoes away.

Extend your enjoyment into the evening with some lighting. Be mindful of birds and night-flying insects by using shields to point light down to the ground instead of into the night sky. Select lights with lower lumens that aren’t as bright but still provide sufficient light and ambiance for you. Avoid white and blue light and opt for amber and yellow greens that are less disruptive to the birds and night-flying pollinators.

Like any decorating or gardening project, be ready to make needed adjustments. While fine-tuning your design, be sure to take time to relax and enjoy your new space.
