HE DAYS are growing shorter as we head into September – a sure sign that autumn, the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’, is just around the corner, Visitorland’s crops will finally be gathered in and the leaves will start to fall from the trees. Memories of this summer’s village fruit and flower shows, festivals and countryside events are starting to fade and not even the glorious autumnal colours can disguise the depressing fact that another year is nearly three parts over. But looking on the bright side, autumn brings Visitorland’s greatest free attraction, our carnivals, which are a West Country tradition that has survived for centuries. They provide spectacular displays for people of all ages who come from miles around to admire the processions of illuminated floats and fancy-costumed walkers. And they raise a lot of money for good causes. Thanks to the year-round hard work of the relatively small number of people involved in devising, financing, building and appearing on the floats, the rest of us are able to enjoy marvellous entertainment in exchange for a handful of loose change lobbed into a bucket. They deserve a generous number of pound coins amongst the change. Another autumn delight that is becoming something of a local tradition is the Yeovil Literary Festival. Now in its fourth year, it runs from 20th to 23rd October and is packed with events that seem certain to appeal to a wide range of interests. Among this year’s visiting speakers are TV broadcaster Kirsty Wark, Olympic ski-jumper Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, agony aunt Bel Mooney, garden expert Joe Swift, naturalist Stephen Moss and historical novelist Alison Weir. Comedy forms an important part of the festival with events featuring Miles Jupp, Mark Watson, Ned Boulting and Alan Carr, while on a more serious note Simon Weston will be telling the story of his life since defying death at war, and Sir Ranulph Fiennes will be talking about his polar explorations, charity fundraising and the many books he has written. Ben and David Crystal will be examining Shakespeare’s
influence on the English language, John Crace and John Sutherland will be performing short parodies on Shakespeare’s most famous plays, and classical composer Dr John Rutter will be discussing his music with Christopher Monks, artistic director of the choral ensemble Armonico Consort. These are just some of the many events the organisers have shoehorned into one long weekend at venues as diverse as the Octagon Theatre, the Manor Hotel, Yeovil Library and Brimsmore Garden Centre. Most events will last for around an hour with admission prices ranging from £8 to £21. Letters To the Editor Wessex Grand Prix Carnival Circuit
Sir, The Wessex Grand Prix Carnival Circuit, now in its 25th successful year, was the brainchild of Keith Berry of Frome Carnival Association and Gordon Stockman of Castle Cary Carnival Society. Seeking to support and encourage local carnivals, Keith Berry had made approaches to Shaftesbury and Gillingham carnival committees in the early 1980s with a proposal to form a new circuit of carnivals. Keith respected that each carnival town had its own character, and that this needed to be preserved. At this time, the formation of a circuit was regarded as no more than a pipe dream. In 1985, Keith Berry met Gordon Stockman whilst judging the Midsomer Norton carnival. Gordon was inspired the Keith’s concept and together they arranged consultative meetings with local carnival committees. The circuit was conceived on a Formula 1 Racing principle, so that it would not affect existing local carnival town awards and judging. It would be a supplemental competition, over and above local competitions - to encourage clubs and carnivalites from each town going into the circuit to compete for another range of awards. The circuit was set up with three basic category classes of competition: Tableaux, Feature and Comic. In 1986 the Wessex Grand Prix Circuit was established with the carnivals of Frome, Shaftesbury, Mere, Wincanton and Castle Cary. All the circuit members
pooled resources for publicity and sponsorship. Such was the success of the circuit that Gillingham carnival joined, followed by Warminster and Trowbridge shortly after. Sturminster Newton carnival also joined the circuit in the last decade, together with Salisbury. Today, the Wessex Grand Prix is a thriving community, with its own Wessex Queen, regular meetings and a wide range of prizes and awards for entries ranging from large floats to individual walking masqueraders. And, thirty years on, Keith Berry and Gordon Stockman remain two of the Wessex Grand Prix’s leading lights. The Wessex Grand Prix Carnival Circuit
Possible New Rail Service?
Sir, I read with interest your In Passing article, August 2016 issue. The article highlighted the difficulty of getting into the County town of Taunton from the East side of Somerset. Possible new rail services planned are mentioned. However, as you say, are they going to happen? The answer is very unlikely. The reason? Plans to improve local rail services will require some local Authority funding and Somerset County Council has shown little interest to date in financing local rail projects. Cross the border into Devon and its a very different story. A new railway station and bus links were in place at Cranbrook, a new housing development east of Exeter, at the same time residents moved in. A second station at this development is also planned. At Axminster to improve services a disused platform was brought back to life, a new loop line put in place and station lifts were included for disabled access. Frequency of rail services all over Devon increased to half hourly or hourly intervals. Contrast this with the 2 to 3

hour gap between trains on the Weymouth to Bristol line via Castle Cary and on the main line from Castle Cary to Taunton. The infrequent service is similar to the rail service in the Scottish highlands where there is less population. The situation with local bus services is no better, since 2011 Somerset County Council has adopted a slash and burn policy on bus subsidies resulting in the whole of Visitorland having no Sunday, Bank Holiday or Evening services at all. Cut backs have not only affected rural buses but the links between main towns, for example, the last bus from Taunton to Yeovil now leaves at 5.14pm. Before 2010 it was 10.40pm. Bus links to Railway stations have also been cut, the last bus from Yeovil Junction to Yeovil town is now 6.50pm. The last train to the station is at 4 minutes past midnight. Somerset must decide where it is going, continue as we are and traffic through our towns and villages will rapidly increase and gridlock will happen every day. We must improve our public transport to supply alternatives to having to use a car for most, if not all, journeys we make. Cuts to bus services have happened in many parts of the country but not so severe as in our area. Something is adrift when you can catch a bus from the small fishing village of Mousehole in Cornwall into Penzance 7 days a week until after 11pm at night but my local bus in the Yeovil urban area, population over 40,000, only runs hourly Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 5pm, with no service Saturdays, Sundays, Public Holidays or evenings. Sir, We would like to express our gratitude to everyone who supported Cary Brooks first ever Summer Fete, (we assure you it won’t be the last!) To all our sponsors, local shops, friends and families, who donated most generous raffle prizes. To staff who helped man the
stalls, cajoling their families to assist them and to the gents who packed the table and chairs away, after the event. Castle Cary Majorettes opened the fete with a display followed by Castle Cary Primary school Country Dancing – what a jolly start to the afternoon. Seeing so many ‘old friends’ ex-employees and late residents families returning to support us - wonderful! These monies are going towards the Residents Comfort and Amenities fund, to purchase ‘In house’ entertainment and new Activity objects. Sir, During the current season, Castle Cary Museum has seen an increase in Visitors, compared to last year. Overseas visitors from from Japan, Russia, Austria, Norway, Africa, Germany, NZ, USA, Canada and Switzerland plus counties all over England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The Visitors book makes extremely interesting reading, especially the 'Comment'. A talk about the Oldest known Map of Castle Cary
On Saturday 3rd September at 6.30pm in Caryford Hall, Prof. Will Vaughan will give a talk about the oldest known map of Castle Cary and Ansford. This unique map dates from 1682-4, it is on vellum and is very large – nearly 4ft x 4ft. It is preserved in the British Library in London, however a life-size facsimile has recently been donated to Castle Cary Museum. Will’s talk will be similar to the one he gave on 10th June in the Shambles – which was oversubscribed. There will be a pay-bar, raffle, postcards, leaflets and a chance to order a high quality print of the part of the town where you live – or one of the whole thing if you have a wall big enough and pockets deep enough!
Tickets are now on sale in the Bookshop and the Museum at £7. You can also get them on the door for £8. The event is in support of Castle Cary Museum.

The Alfred Gillett Trust, a charity which preserves and promotes the heritage collections of the Clark family and C & J Clark Ltd., is hosting a special free open weekend of exhibitions, talks, tours and musical performances to mark Heritage Open Days on the 8th - 11th September. Celebrating the ingenuity of the Victorians in Somerset, the Trust will host two special exhibitions. The Somerset & Dorset Railway Trust’s touring exhibition, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the closure of the Somerset & Dorset Railway and, in partnership with the University of Exeter, an exhibition celebrating the return of a newly-restored machine built by Bridgwater inventor John Clark in the 1830s. The remarkable device known as ‘Eureka’ creates unique lines of
Latin verse at the turn of a handle and has delighted people for centuries as a feat of engineering and imagination. The Grange in Street will be opening its doors on Sunday 11th September from 10am – 4.30pm, offering pre-bookable tours of the historic Grade II listed former manor house. VINTAGE Motor Cycling
THE HOBBY of old vehicles is really a nostalgia thing and whether you collect old tractors, lorries, cars, motorcycles or any other means of transport it is s o m e t i mes surpri si ng what ancillary collections come along as a result. I have several old motorcycle club badges, one of which is permanently displayed on one of my machines, and my attention has recently been drawn to other enthusiasts machines which also display badges.
My photograph this month shows just such a badge, it was issued by the Historic Collectors Club. I have no knowledge of where this club was based, nor do I have any idea of its age, but I would guess at the 1920's. Many of these badges are beautifully made in cast aluminium and can be very colourful and do, I feel, add just a little something to a period machine. Here then could start a whole new area for collecting and of course the research to find out where and when they were issued. There must be many hundreds of different badges to collect so start looking now, and at least the new collection will take up less room

I have attended several motorcycle shows and large events this year and taken great pleasure from just talking to club members and non-members alike, all of whom have the interest in old bikes. What surprises me sometimes is peoples perception of what is an old bike. Our club, like most others, accepts any machine over 25 years old. This brings us up to 1991 at present, and machines made just prior to that date look and ride like a very modern bike. Because we use the name of 'Vintage' in our club's title people assume that all machines must be very old, which is certainly not the case. Other people wrongly assume that machines must be British made, which is certainly not the case. We therefore take any nationality and make of machine with the only proviso that it must be 25 years old, even that rule can be flexible for new members, and that is a condition imposed by the club's insurers. That should mean that anyone with an interest in old bikes can be catered for. Events continue as ever during the month of September. The Somerset Section have a guest speaker for their club night at Cossington on the 1st, followed on the 3rd by the Codgers and Dodgers Run (wonderful name for a run and just about sums up most of us) from Watchfield (1-30 for a 2pm start on this one). Next will be the West Somerset Run from Norton Fitzwarren on the 11th and on the 24th will be the next Autojumble at the Shepton Mallet Showground. Lastly they have their Cornish

Weekend from the 30th to 3rd October. The Wessex Veteran and Vintage Section start with Roger's Runaround from Henstridge on the 11th. On the 12th club night at East Stour will be a film night, and on the 22nd there will be an Autumn Leaves Run from Coombe Bissett which starts at 2pm. The Dorset Section have their Lunch Meet on the 7th at West Stour and club night on the 14th will be a guest speaker. The usual Breakfast Meet will have to be moved forward to the 17th to avoid a clash of events on the 24th. On the 18th will be the Last of the Summer Wine Run from Hinton St Mary and the 29th (Thursday) will see a Mid Week Run starting at Warden Hill, Evershot, at 2pm. As always there is plenty to see and do, but for more details ring 01935-872528. Autumn must be the season for autojumbling. Mentioned above is the Somerset Sections at Shepton Mallet on the 24th, a must go event for enthusiasts of all types and ages of machines. Before that on the 2nd and 3rd of September will be a huge autojumble at Netley Marsh, near Southampton. This incorporates an auction of machines. On the 3rd and 4th there will be another at the Beaulieu Motor Museum, down in the New Forest. This is a massive affair with many fields of stallholders catering for both car and motorcycle parts, there is usually some aircraft parts as well, and this too will have an auction of machines. No excuse then for not getting next winters restoration project or for getting those missing items for the project you already have. With the bank rate down to a quarter of one percent it makes better sense to invest in old vehicles. At least you can use the old vehicle and have fun with it rather than stare at an investment document. You will note that the dates for these last two events overlap. This is arranged deliberately so that the continental buyers can travel over and attend both events in one weekend. I presume they wear running spikes as for me it is impossible to cover all the stalls at one of these events in a single day.
I spoke in recent months about the need to recruit younger members to our ranks. It seems that almost all clubs, covering all interests, are in a similar plight. I have just returned home from an event which is spread over three days. Based near Maidstone in Kent this event is called the International West Kent Run and it lived up to its name by attracting around 70 of our members from various parts of Europe. What became noticeable was that their average age would have been in the late forties whereas the British contingent would average out in the late 60's. How they do it I cannot tell, nor could they tell me when we talked of it. It just seems odd. They are however very enthusiastic about their hobby and to illustrate this point there were two Norwegian fellows who rode a strange tricycle affair. With one wheel in the front and two at the rear they had a wooden commercial box between the rear wheels in which to carry their effects. Powered by a small two stroke engine these entrants had ridden their machines 1700 miles from Norway to Kent, done three days of riding at the event and then faced another 1700 miles to return home. Now that is dedication on such slow machines as these. How many bottles of liniment to treat the saddle sores is not recorded. Rod Hann.

Now organisers Sue Ede and Peter Hodder have bowed to pressure for a second event and have found the perfect location in nearby Bruton, currently a beacon of art and design, the with advent of Hauser & Wirth Gallery and an influx of celebrity and media types keen to experience the good life in a sophisticated rural setting. The first Bruton Decorative Antiques Fair will take place on 14th -16th October 2016 at Haynes International Motor Museum, Sparkford, BA22 7LH, and will offer an opportunity to many dealers who miss out at the Bath fair. Sue Ede commented: ‘We had such a long waiting list for our Bath fair this year we decided we had to find a second
venue and we could not be more delighted with The Haynes International Motor Museum just outside Bruton, where their brand new £6million modernist design extension will be home to our exciting new event. ‘Our formula is very similar, a multi-layered and inspiring fair that offers so much for interior stylists, antique collectors, home decorators and anyone with an interest in decorative antiques and design from the 18th to 20th century. Several of our Bath exhibitors will join us at this new event, but we also have a number of exciting dealers making their debut. It’s going to add a new dimension to the cultural appeal
of Bruton.’ Mark Hill, the well-known TV celebrity, antiques and MidCentury expert and author, will officially open the fair at 10am on Saturday, 15th October. The Muddled Man at West Chinnock is a traditional, family run country pub. A free house, they offer three traditional West Country ales including Teignworthy and Yeovil Ales which change regularly. Motorhome Show, held for the thirty first year at the Bath & West showground, on the A371. Now improved and re-branded as Camperex, there’s no better place to view and compare so many different models of motorhomes and campervans. Wessex Heavy Horse Show
The Wessex Heavy Horse Society's Annual Show is a fun and informative day out for all the family (including the fourlegged members). Forty or more gentle giants will be showing their paces in the ring, on the working plot and in the horse lines. We all know we should drink plenty each day and I hope you do - after all, we are mostly water:- ‘Hairy bags of salty soup’, as one of my favourite expressions goes. Traditionally water, being so essential to life, was treated with reverence. This planet is littered with stunning waterfalls, holy wells and sacred springs. So this month I want to look at ways to make bathing a little more divine and therapeutic.

Healing Waters
ARE YOU a bath or shower person? Is it a quick wash just to clean up or more of a treat away from the bustle of life? Water is
Beautiful Baths - Every so often it’s pure indulgence to take your time over a good bath. Now I’m a bit rubbish at switching off sometimes and don’t like to feel I’m not achieving much by lying
around in the tub. So for me these baths have become part of a practice of self-care. They are therapy and in no way a waste of time! There are so many things we can add to a bath to make it a healing treatment. I love Epsom salts - magnesium rich and great for tired and sore muscles. Apple Cider Vinegar can be good for this too, although the smell isn’t for everyone! Essential oils are wonderful in baths. Always dilute them in a carrier such as a base oil or milk. This will make sure they disperse more evenly. Marjoram, Ginger, Black Pepper, Lavender & Chamomile would be good choices to add to a muscle soothing Epsom bath. Exotic Ylang Ylang & Jasmine will

create a heady floral vibe. Citrus oils can uplift and inspire. I love to add coconut milk and rose petals to a bath every now and then - bear in mind if you add anything herby it will need to be cleaned up later. Bath melts are wonderful for dry skin. Cocoa butter pellets can be added while the bath is running - to give them time to melt. If you pat yourself dry gently, the residue of that nourishing butter will have more time to penetrate the skin and you can expect to be silky smooth and supple skinned all day! healing baths. Dead sea salts and oatmeal are popular home remedies for eczema and dermatitis. You can add salts liberally to a full bath (up to 1kg or so), but start with about a cupful and see how you get on. For oatmeal, which can really take down the itch, add a few tablespoons to a muslin bag and position it under the taps while the bath is running. Shea butter can be slathered on post-bath to deeply moisturise and soothe. Shea butter is very hard so I sit the pot in a sink of hot water while I’m bathing to give it time to melt.
Super Showering - Many of us choose to have a shower rather than a daily bath. This may be to do with time constraints or for environmental reasons. I’m a big fan of a good shower but rather than diving in and out, I like to revel in the water on my skin, indulge in some fragrant medicine and imagine I’m under some great waterfall with all of my cares being carried away. I want to step out of that shower feeling clean of body and mind. Power showers are great if you have any knotted muscles - blast those areas repeatedly with hot water. You can have a little home hydrotherapy by switching between hot and cold showers a few times, always ending on cold. Hot and cold showers can help with pain and poor circulation and they certainly wake you up in the morning! They are contraindicated with certain health conditions such as high blood pressure, so do consult with your GP if unsure. Aromatherapy can be happily incorporated into your shower routine with many essential oil based shower gels and soaps on the market. You can also take an unscented shower gel and add a couple of drops of
your own blend to customise your shower each day. Citrus oils such as grapefruit and lime work well to bring us to life in the morning; lavender and marjoram can help soothe tired muscles and help us wind down at night; rose and geranium are great stress busters; clary sage and bergamot can lift our spirits when we’re feeling blue. So take some time out of your busy day to have a sacred shower or blissful bath. It’s not just about getting clean, it’s about giving yourself a little TLC. Until next month, happy bathing! AN AUTUMN or winter wedding can be a magical event - but there are a few things you should remember - here are a few tips. The Venue - whether you’re getting married in Church or having a civil ceremony in a hotel, ask about the heating and make sure it’s adequate. If you’re marrying in November or December you may be able to save yourself a few pounds on the decorations. A hotel will probably already be decorated for the festive season. Transport - a horse and carriage or an open-topped car are not practical for a winter wedding. Choose a vehicle that will be warm and reliable, and get you to the ceremony on time.
Photography - plan to have an early wedding. It starts to get dark early in the winter months. An early wedding will give you
time for photographs before the light begins to fade. Know precisely what photographs you want taken to prevent delays. And remember, the wedding party may be in flimsy gowns, so keep a stole or pashmina handy to keep warm between shots. Ensure the venue has a welllit space inside for photographs, in case of inclement weather.

The Yarn Bomb: Exploding in Sturminster Newton
The urban craft phenomenon of Yarn Bombing is making its way to Sturminster Newton on Saturday 27th August where the town will be erupting with fun and colour. Hanson’s Fabrics & Crafts are hosting The Yarn Bomb, the very first event of its kind in Sturminster Newton with sponsorship from two of the UK’s leading yarn suppliers; Stylecraft and King Cole. Railings, bollards, benches and more will be turned into colourful works of art as the town is decorated with bright knitting, colourful crochet and fun yarn crafts! Jacqui Wragg from the SturQuest Community Office says ‘This is such an exciting idea and has been embraced by everyone I’ve spoken to. CHAMPIONSHIP OF THE WORLD - FINAL! Now there's words that always get the attention of the good people of
this country. Unfortunately some of the claims that a particular championship or other being ‘of the world’ can be a little dubious. As someone who was heavily involved in the short-circuit racing (cars) in the past, some of the 'Championships of the World' were more than a little suspect, although I think an application of trades descriptions of some kind must have caused a little controversy now and again. My mind gravitates also to the 'World Baseball Series' held by the Americans every year which consist of teams from all over ... er ... America. Now, one might be a little cynical over this, but I daresay they would be happy to have teams from other parts of the globe who would like join in, although if they were beaten at their own game things might turn nasty. Nevertheless, the World
Championship is taking place e'en as I write, for that greatest of all outdoor pub games, namely Bat and Trap, which is being held in Kent - where else? - with teams as far away as, now let's see ... Kent! (and possibly even Surrey). Whilst baseball and its many cups and championships have been running for well over a hundred years, the Bat and Trap World Cup has been running for, um ... three years. Oh well; give it some time and I'm sure it will become more popular world-wide! The difference is of course, that the organisers are more than a little tongue-in-cheek about the whole deal. Players are out for a great time and at the same time they will raise loads of money for charitable causes. For those of you not familiar with the game, I can only suggest that a little research on the interweb may be enough to stimulate some interest. It is

believed that Bat and Trap has the same origins as cricket, although that would now be impossible to prove. The apparatus needed is not expensive to buy, neither is it difficult to make, as proved by your scribe and his somewhat limited woodwork skills. Each summer thousands of people play league in Kent and Surrey (in fact it was the first outdoor game to have floodlighting made compulsory!) and many tens of thousands play casual games when the opportunity arises. It was even featured on television's Country File a few years back. I have to say I would love to enter a team to the World Championship from amongst my fellow men and women of Dorset, but I really don't feel we are up to the necessary standard to give the good people of the Home Counties a run for their money. Well, not yet, anyway. On the ever-expanding internet there are many sites that deal with sports, most of which I have little or no interest in, except there are some which deal with pub games, and one in particular which covers many in an interesting way is Shove it, Chuck it, Toss it from the keyboard and camera of Mark Shirley. Mark is from a village near Market Harborough, and shares my passion for this sort of thing, as is readily apparent from his writings. We have corresponded for some while and recently had the pleasure of meeting up and taking a trip to the Rose and Crown in Bradford Abbas, not least because it is the spiritual home of skittles (see Movietone News ‘Athletics - lads of the village’). Mark joined our skittle team for the last game of the summer season and we took a win. Hitting a creditable 40, it was a good debut at the West Country version of the game, and somewhat different from the version played by Mark and his contemporaries

Do take a good look at his blog, it covers a huge number of games in an increasingly large area of the country. Truly a labour of love that is available for us all to enjoy. It was a pleasure to meet Mark and his partner Karen, and despite warnings about various hauntings, they spent a night at the Rose and Crown, although no interesting spectres were seen. It means that now three out of four of the country's self-confessed pub-games anoraks have now visited this pub. Perhaps there are more of you out there? If so, perhaps it's time to come out of the closet - or indeed, the skittle alley - and declare yourself openly to be ‘one of us’. It's no shame! Onto the subject of beer, and at the aforementioned pub we had some excellent Amber Ale from Marston's. This is a low-gravity beer, at about 3.8% abv, if I recall correctly. I did check the Marston's web-site, but strangely there is no mention of it. There is however, another of the ales on their site that is available at present which is New World Pale Ale described as ‘a gleaming gold in colour, has a fantastic fruity flavour with blasts of tropical peaches, apricot, melon and passionfruit. All delivered with a creamy, white head and light, zesty aroma’. This beer is 3.8% abv but frankly - and how many times do I say it? but I'm tired of the ‘zesty’ beers that have become popular over the last few years. Nevertheless, if it encourages people to abandon tasteless fake lagers and try something with an actual taste, then so be it; it’s just that these beers aren't for me. We've mentioned about the ‘consultation’ that has been taking place with CAMRA members over the last few months regarding the future of the organisation. I stick to what I have been saying all along; it's no longer an organisation with a mission to only help promote real ale, but one which is evolving with our social needs. Virtually all pubs now have
real ale, thankfully most of the time it's good, and we need to embrace the challenges of change and react accordingly if necessity makes it so. CAMRA will still need to continue in its fight to keep what we know as real ale, for as those of us in the older generation depart this plane of existence then the skills from the past that brew the ales we have learned to love will be lost. I'm not against the rise of ‘Craft Ales’ however one defines them, but basically it would appear that the term means ‘Keg ales that taste good’, although one sees the phrase on just about every pump clip these days! So an evolving Campaign will need to go on doing its bit for saving pubs, promoting real cider and perry, encouraging and advising small brewers and small pub owners, fighting pub closures, fighting brewery takeovers and closures. I think you can see where I'm coming from. They are also the
most successful consumer group in Europe, and with over 180,000 members, I think will continue to be so providing the success doesn't bite them on the rear and it implodes. Whilst any organisation has to look at how and why they do what they do now and again, the whole raison d'être must remain. Rant over. The new Good Beer Guide for 2017 should be coming out soon, with a great number of the good
pubs where one can (hopefully) be guaranteed a great pint. A new guide is also coming out very soon on Britain's Best Real Heritage Pubs a book that anyone who loves our Great British Institution can ‘Ooh’ and ‘Aah’ over. Presents for you-know-when, perhaps? Meanwhile I'm off to a pub in a village not too far from me, as I hear they have the ‘World Snail Racing Championship Final’. I'm sure it's a not a staged event!

Hosts Patrick and Claire Nobbs took over the inn last November and since then they have been working hard restoring and refurbishing this character inn. To accompany your meal there is a comprehensive wine list – everything from a good house wine to a cellar selection for lovers of fine wine. Last month a young lady by the name of Tina Foote celebrated her 60th Birthday here at the top of the hill, with some great music, a nice bit of food, and lots of nice people having a few drinks to wish her well. Great party Tina. Congratulations! This month Stuart Field is a little bit closer to being the same age as me. Happy 55th Birthday Stu . I want to tell you all about a very special gig that we have coming up next month. On the 16th September SARAH JORY will be playing here in the function room. Now trust me when I say we are very lucky to have her playing here. She is usually jetting off all over the world playing for the likes of Van Morrison, Eric Clapton, etc. Over the last 20 years or so she has been voted British European Country Artist of the year for several consecutive years, and has performed in over 40 different countries. She is widely regarded as one of the finest exponents of Pedal Steel Guitar anywhere in the world. I am thrilled that she is coming to play here at The Quicksilver. Those of you who know will be here. If you don’t know of her check her out on You Tube. Tickets are £5 in advance £8 on the door. In 2016, ‘warmer’ metals like copper and gold are making a comeback in interior decorating, both as countertops and kitchen appliances. Residents should sort and segregate recycling, ensure no recycling – especially food – is in the rubbish bin and put all waste containers out by 7am. All 16 recycling sites are on their usual timetables, with five – Bridgwater, Frome, Minehead, Taunton and Yeovil – open 8am4pm seven days a week, and 11 open five days a week, including Saturday 8am-4pm, Sunday 8am1pm and Bank Holiday Monday 8am-7pm. Between August and November the autumn moves in as summer slips slowly past the garden bench; it is impossible to hang on to summer as it will surely do what it does. Personally I love all the seasons except long grey wet winters, each season has highs and lows with something good to offer. However I do still feel a little bereft when one season goes. Probably my own fault if I missed the peak of
bluebells in spring, or lie on the lawn in July sunshine, but I think you get where I am going with this now, it’s in the nature of ‘regrets I’ve had a few, but there again too few to mention’ as the next season will arrive and with it more highs and lows. August into September can be subtle, hardly noticed. Schools start back, last year’s school leavers start again somewhere else with a job, training or more education, family life centres back around daily chores leaving the holiday mood behind. This month we have fashionably late perennials! You can add fresh excitement to your autumn displays by including a selection of seasonal stunners to flower beds and patio pots. Several hardy perennials have been patiently growing all year, waiting for their turn to take centre stage. And now their time has come to burst into bloom, filling our gardens with vibrant colour. Japanese anemones are always a favourite. Tall and bold, their simple flowers in shades from pink to white really celebrate the season. They’re adaptable too, growing in sites from full sun to partial shade. Commonly called Ice Plants, the thick fleshy foliage of Sedum varieties add interest throughout the year, from the moment it develops in spring. Varieties are available with foliage colours from green to grey and deep purple, and some with variegated green and white leaves look particularly impressive grown individually in small terracotta pots. Their flowers come in eyecatching colours from pure white to pink and red, proving as attractive to us as they are bees and butterflies. Michaelmas Day is celebrated on 29 September, and lends its name to one of the most valuable hardy perennials to flower through September and October, the Michaelmas Daisies. Many are varieties of Aster novi-belgii, but several other types of aster are available also. A succession of blooms gives asters long-lasting appeal, and they make great cut flowers too. Verbena is another great performer, flowering over many months to really earn its place in any garden. It’s hard to beat the Argentinian vervain, Verbena

September is quite an active month. In the veg garden the harvest is still underway and top fruit crops are now ripening rapidly. It looks like being a reasonably good year for apples and pears. Potatoes have been spared blight up to the time of writing, but it is worth cutting back the foliage (the ‘haulm’) now even if

they are not dug for another couple of weeks. This prevents disease affecting the tubers, as well as allowing the skins of the potatoes to ripen. Beans have taken a long while to get going in my garden this year – partly due to the rabbits and voles, so I need to keep them going as long as possible. Don’t leave the old beans on the plant and keep them well fed and watered. Tomatoes have a better flavour if ripened on the plant, and assuming they are growing under glass or polythene will keep going for a while yet if cared for. Leafy crops can get hammered by birds who wait until your back is turned. Well secured netting will protect them without creating a hazard for the birds. Lawns can be renovated this
month with worn and bare patches over-sown (after a bit of preparation) and new lawns sown or turfed. Established lawns really do benefit from an autumn lawn feed, high in potash and phosphates, to build strong roots ahead of the winter. The other useful task is to kill off badly mossed areas, and using a garden fork make holes through the thatch of grass to help drainage over winter. If you can brush in some fine grit or sandy lawn dressing, then so much the better. I have been doing a lot more pruning this summer than in previous years especially on apple trees, the advantage is that hard p runing i n sum m e r d o esn’ t promote the same strong growth that it would in winter or spring. THE LAST COPY of Sturminster Newton’s monthly community magazine that crossed my desk was the December 2011 issue, and it impressed me as being everything a local magazine should be – packed with local news, information and advertisements, well-written and cleanly designed, and printed on good quality paper. At that time it was in its 10th year of publication, having been launched in April 2002 as Community.com and subsequently renamed unity.com, and was being distributed free to 2,500 homes in the town and the outlying villages and hamlets within a six-mile radius. At that time, too, it was printed in monochrome and I recall commenting in this column that the magazine managed to be attractive and lively without colours. Nonetheless, from the June 2016 issue, number 171, it has been given a fresh new look with full colour printing throughout and a snappier name unity, and I’m grateful to the reader who kindly sent me a copy. With 24 pages in A4 format unity is large enough to give coverage to many of the local organisations as well as the schools, the Town Council, the SturQuest community office and The Exchange, the town’s arts, entertainments and activities centre. It contains many photographs and graphics which certainly benefit from colour printing, and I suspect that some of them also enhance the magazine’s website www.unitystur.com. And the quality of printing by Wincanton Print is, of course, excellent as always. The group of local residents who produce the magazine and its website clearly know exactly what they’re doing and why they’re doing it, and they do it very well indeed. Along with The Leveller in Langport and The

It’s a pity that the Western Gazette seems unable to emulate the high standards of these community magazines. In a headline on page 22 of the 28th July issue an unwanted letter ‘d’ found its way into ‘Car sales case held up after alledged assault’, and a headline on page 31 of the 14th July issue claimed that ‘One in 20 babies born at hospital are drug dependent’ while the opening sentence of the story makes clear that the correct figure is one in every 200 babies. And a story on page 2 of the 28th July issue (about lorries avoiding roadworks at Ansford by going through Castle Cary town centre and creating hazards for pedestrians) mentioned the hope that ‘raising the curb is part of the scope of the work as it’s dangerous even on a normal day’. Reporter Liam Trim should know that ‘raising the kerb’ would be a better way of alleviating the danger. The Western Gazette that I usually see is billed as the Wincanton, Castle Cary, Bruton and Gillingham edition, and the first seven pages are supposedly unique to this edition – the pages specifically for those four communities. Not a lot of space for news from each town and its surrounding villages, you might rightly think, and even less in the 4th August issue! Around half of page three was given over to news that the annual agricultural show at Shepton Mallet has found

a new site further along Cannard’s Grave Road. And over half of page 4 carried news of a forthcoming concert by Queen tribute band QE2 in Shepton Mallet’s Collett Park (complete with a large photo of the band). And half of page 6 contained news of the proposed redevelopment of the former Shepton Mallet prison. All three stories were attributed to ‘staff reporter’. Was Liam Trim, the edition’s usual reporter, taking a holiday, I wonder. Or was there simply so little to report from Wincanton, Castle
Cary, Bruton and Gillingham that the editor had to resort to lifting stories from the Shepton Mallet Journal. The editionised pages certainly bore signs of do-it-yourself, as illustrated by the clipping from the Shepton Mallet show site story (below). I suspect that many seasoned typesetters would wince at the proposed placing of the quote, leaving ‘development’ as an orphan beneath the quote.
