n THE GOOD OLD DAyS most of us would have been looking forward to a day off work on 9th June. With the likelihood of warmer weather our seaside towns and tourism businesses would be loving it, but nowadays it’s not to be. Whit Monday is a thing of the past, replaced by the May Day Bank Holiday on the first Monday in May and the Spring Bank Holiday on the last Monday. Whit Sunday, the seventh Sunday after Easter, is celebrated by Christians as the day on which the Holy Spirit descended on the Apostles, and the following day was customarily one for celebrations, dancing, fairs and feasts. However, most of the few traditional events that survive have been moved to the Spring Bank Holiday. As Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the Vernal Equinox on 21st March, it can be on any date between 22nd March and 25th April. This year it was very late – 20th April – but if it had been at its earliest then we would have already celebrated Whit Monday on 11th May. In the early years of the 19th century certain saints’ days were observed as holidays at the Bank of England – more than 30 a year, would you believe! In 1830 this number was reduced to 18, but it wasn’t until the Bank Holidays Acts of 1871 and 1875 that certain days were formally recognised as public holidays when banks are closed by law. The number as well as the dates of some of these have been altered subsequently, but originally most were associated with Christian festivals, notably Christmas Day and Boxing Day, Good Friday and Easter Monday, and Whit Monday. Some countries in mainland Europe have many more public holidays, usually on the pretext of celebrating the day of some obscure saint, while in the UK the best we have come up with has been a proposal to replace May Day with Trafalgar Day in mid-October to lengthen the tourism season. Better, perhaps, would be to celebrate St Crispin’s Day on 25th October.
Crispin, a Frenchman martyred in the 3rd century, was adopted as the patron saint of shoemakers who, in the 17th century, took every Monday off, claiming they were celebrating St Crispin. Or how about St Frideswide’s Day on 19th October – this holy virgin provides cause for commemoration for restoring the sight of an 8th-century Mercian king who had been struck blind for lustily pursuing her. A quick skim through the Daily Missal reveals plenty more excuses for a day off, though the Bank of England’s 30-plus seems excessive even by continental standards. After the plethora of Bank Holidays in April and May there’s a three-month gap till August Bank Holiday then nearly four months till Christmas. Let’s think afresh about our calendar of public holidays and devise a better spread through the year. NN.

Letter on a familiar subject ...
Sir, Three milestones were passed this week. The country is now home to over 100 billionaires, CO2 has passed 400ppm and membership of South Somerset’s Green Party has risen by 75%: gross, dangerous and encouraging, in that order. Are they linked? yes they are. We are in a runaway business world with a perpetual quest for ‘growth’ at all costs. These costs hit the environment and those at the bottom of the pile. Money doesn’t trickle down from rich to poor - it is the reverse, hence the 100 billionaires.
These billionaires, their businesses and their investments rely on fossil fuels, hence CO2 at 400ppm. And most of us know that this has to change, hence the Green Party’s success. 70th Anniversary
Sir, I thought that your readers may be interested in the following:Two significant events take place this year - the 100th anniversary of World War One, and also the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day landings on 6th June. This is likely to be the last 'big' anniversary that many will remember and already both here and abroad a whole host of events and exhibitions are planned to mark the occasion. For those lucky enough to be able to travel to France memories will abound, as in the vicinity of the normandy beaches everyone is gearing themselves up for the big occasion. For those unable to travel, and as something of a food and wine
buff, I am giving a talk on D-Day itself at The Shrubbery Hotel, Ilminster, on the subject of 'How Wine Helped us to Win the War' - even Churchill himself was heard to say 'We're not fighting to save France; we're fighting to save Champagne!' Tickets will cost just £10 per person, to include normandy Cider and 'rations'. The hotel has kindly agreed to charge just £2 per person for the food so that all of the remaining income will go to The Royal British Legion, the charity set up in 1921 to provide financial and emotional support to veterans, their families and dependents. During the evening there will be the opportunity for those attending to share their memories, with maybe even a sing-song! As an additional fund raiser there will be a raffle of wines, donated by me, from some of the key wine makers who played a part in the outcome of the war. Any veterans of the 2nd World War who would like to attend are invited to do so as my guests. Change of polling station location for Castle Cary European Parliamentary Election
South Somerset District Council would like to make residents of Castle Cary aware that the location of the polling station for the European Parliamentary Election today, 22 May, has had to be changed.
Poll cards were originally posted out referring to the usual location at the Constitutional Club, but unfortunately, this venue is now unavailable. The polling station in Castle Cary will now be located at The Market House in Market Place.

Greeting cards are sold in one in six shops in the UK and reaching the finals of The Retas is a notable achievement. Finalists were decided as a result of an industry-wide poll of greeting card suppliers, reps and agents and validated by a panel of experts. Winners will be revealed at an Awards lunch at the Dorchester Hotel in London on Wednesday 9 July.

On Friday 20th June, the UKs Care Homes will take centre stage in National Care Home Open Day providing events and activities and ‘Cake’ to connect care homes with local communities – showing the wider world what life in a care home is all about. At Cary Brook the aim is to create opportunities for links with people of all ages from the local community and surrounding towns and villages. The ladies of Churches Together join our residents on the first Monday of each month, popping in for a friendly chat. ‘Anna on the Piano’ volunteers on a Tuesday morning for a monthly sing along and Harriett just pops in when passing by to play the piano. Cary Brook wish to widen their ‘circle of Friends’. Many of the residents are very able bodied and like to take walks to the town regularly, if not daily, which can be time consuming for carers, who naturally have to look after the frailer residents too. Therefore they are looking for ‘volunteers’ to befriend residents, and support them, if they so wish, to escort into town for a coffee, or to The Millennium Garden for fresh air, the park to watch cricket, any of those impromptu things that so

many of us take for granted. Pop into Cary Brook on their Open Day, to get a ‘feel’ of the home and meet residents and staff and enjoy a slice of cake. A busy day of ‘In House’ entertainment is planned, including one of their favourite entertainers – Ray Cox with his accordion and Steele guitar. If you have a musical instrument that is easily carried eg oboe, violin, clarinet, flute, guitar etc., why not bring it along with you and we can all have some fun. Refreshments will be served throughout the day, ending with a Cheese & Wine Supper. And don’t forget – we will be serving delicious cakes!!
Wincanton Flying Fortress crash anniversary 22nd June
On Sunday 22nd June Wincanton will be commemorating the 70th anniversary of the crash of the American Flying Fortress ‘Old Faithful’. Ever since that day in 1944 townspeople of Wincanton remember the sacrifice made by the crew in avoiding crashing directly onto the town of Wincanton. The greatest of respect and gratitude of the town was shown when a memorial to the brave American flyers was erected at Bayford Hill overlooking the main crash site at Snag Farm in the 1950s. Each year since then on the anniversary their sacrifice is remembered and this year is especially poignant as it is the 70th anniversary. With time the numbers of those who witnessed the tragic event are getting smaller and smaller and it has been decided this year to hand the legacy over to the youth of the town. The main commemoration will take place on Sunday 22nd June with a parade from Carrington Way, Wincanton, to the War Memorial within the grounds of the Memorial Hall. The parade, which marches off at 2pm will be led by the Combined Cadet Force Band of King’s School Bruton. A detachment each from the Army Cadet Force and the Air Training Corps will be escorting the Union Flag and the American flag and cadets from them will be marching in the parade. A large group of students from King Arthur’s Schools Wincanton will be present as will Guides, Brownies and Scouts. The event is organized by Wincanton Royal British Legion whose veterans and members will take a leading role. The sister of the pilot of the ill fated plane, ‘Old Faithful’ 2nd Lt. Peter Mikonios USAAF will be present after travelling

If a director takes a £25,000 loan from his company and agrees to pay interest at say 3.5%, does this need to be declared on the company's tax return or on a form P11D? Robert Stone replies:
This must be shown on the company's corporation return if it has not been repaid to the company within nine months of the end of the accounting year in which this was made. This will generate a corporation tax charge equivalent to 25% of the outstanding amount. The amount of interest paid on the loan is irrelevant for the corporation tax charge. However, if the loan is made for a fixed period at a fixed interest rate which is equal to, or higher than, the official rate of interest (now 3.25%), there is no benefit in kind charge for the director personally, and no need to report this on the form P11D.
Q2. If my employer leases a car to me at the fair market value for such a lease, which I pay in full to the employing company, will I be taxed as if I had the use of a company car with no lease?

yes your company can pay a pension contribution for your husband as he is an employee of the company, although as he earns less than the personal allowance (£10,000 per year) the company is not obliged to autoenrol him in a pension scheme. The company can claim a tax deduction for his wages and pension contribution, as long as that total sum is not excessive for the work he does. you may want to get some comparable quotes for IT and telephone systems support to check you are paying a fair rate for the work he does. The law that taxes company cars was recently changed to ensure employees are always taxed on the provision of a company car, irrespective of how that car is provided. So although you lease the car from your employer you will still be subject to the benefit in kind charge, which is calculated as a percentage of the vehicle's list price when new. The percentage varies from 0% to 35% depending on the vehicle's CO2

Here at The Montague Inn we champion local, in fact at times I fear we can be a little parochial. However, when surrounded by the very best of produce it seems a little pointless searching the globe for ingredients? Moish Sokal
Watercolour artist Moish Sokal is celebrating his 20th Anniversary at the Malthouse Gallery, East Lambrook Manor Gardens with his exhibition Re-connecting, which opens on June 3rd. Already an established artist Moish Sokal’s first exhibition at East Lambrook was early in the life of the Malthouse as a gallery. At the suggestion of the then owner only paintings of English scenes were shown.
‘That was back in the day when I did a lot of commissioned paintings on site and I was enjoying getting to know Somerset and it’s beautiful corners’ says Sokal ‘but in my second exhibition I introduced paintings from my travels to Thailand, Australia and the Middle East. To my great delight they were well-received and set my path for future years, though Somerset is still a constant in my exhibitions.’ Building his audience steadily at his annual exhibitions Sokal was concerned when the venue was up for sale in 1999 with no guarantee that the gallery would continue. However it proved a pivotal year with Sokal painting his first large paintings and the new owners of the Malthouse planning a major development. The next year’s exhibition also took a major step, with his first painting trip to India, the vibrant colour and gentle grace so evident
A local Diary in his very popular India-inspired work was seen for the first time. ‘India has been good to me’ says the artist. ‘Indeed it’s almost my second home as I spend months there each year, soaking up the inspiration and painting. It’s ironic though as on my first visit I was very ill and didn’t go back for 25 years! But now the colour, the wonderful people and extraordinary fairs draw me back again and again.’ Sokal outstayed his second owners when Mike and Gail Werkmeister bought the venue. Although initially focussed only on the iconic cottage garden, famously created by Margery Fish, the newest owners were soon impressed by the artist’s first exhibition with them which set new records. With exhibitions in other venues looming Sokal spread his wings, finding new inspiration in Spain, Morocco and his popular series of work resulting from two visits to Venice. Sokal’s fans find they are travelling with the traveller - exploring more of the world each year. In this anniversary year Sokal has been reconnecting with Israel and Australia, both of which he has called home in the past, and has returned to India, his main muse, where he has made many friends in thirteen years. This event showcases the artistic work produced by everyone connected with ArtsLink and its Big Lottery funded TakepArt project – children, young people, course and workshop participants, volunteers, tutors and staff. It’s a way of celebrating their achievements during the year and a platform from which to show their creativity to the broader community. June. Aimed at families with young children this show packs a whole year into one hour, taking you on a magical journey through the seasons. From the seedsprouting vitality of spring to the frosty frozen fingers of winter, this wordless mix of performance, music, and dance will captivate and delight the very youngest children and their families. Careline provides an emergency alarm pendant that can be worn at all times, which links to a local control centre where emergency

staff are on hand to answer calls 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Over 2,000 elderly and vulnerable residents are already benefitting from the service, which provides reassurance that help is at hand at the push of a button. Relatives can enjoy peace of mind that their loved ones are safe and will get an immediate response whenever they need it. The Careline staff are fully trained to respond to calls from those in need, with experience in
handling thousands of calls a year from local people including elderly, disabled, young and vulnerable customers, patients recovering from hospital and those working or living in isolation. When responding to a pressed pendant, staff can call a doctor or an ambulance, the police or they can call friends, neighbours and family, all within seconds. They offer a free demonstration and, if you are happy with it,

THE DISTRICT COUNCIL promotes Castle Cary as a ‘vibrant market town with a winding main street of golden stone’, which is not entirely true. Stroll through the centre and you will see buildings of grey lias, white-painted render and even the occasional red brick. What is true, after a long gap, is that it’s now a market town again. Every Tuesday since March the area in front of the Market House has been packed with stalls and eager customers. I paid a visit on a sunny morning
in late April and was impressed by the number of stalls, the range and quality of the goods, and the number of people spending their money. On the cobbled area at the front, beneath brightly-coloured awnings, a fishmonger was doing roaring trade, a traditional baker was selling a tempting range of speciality breads and rolls, and a greengrocer had a large display of fresh fruit and vegetables. Among the other stalls were those selling cheeses and chutneys, local meat, wool and haberdashery, soaps and

Castle Cary the centre of the town, markets in the past have not proved to be a great success. The Victoria History of Somerset tells us that a market was first recorded in 1351 and may have existed in the 13th century, but it was sporadic and had lapsed by 1468 when John, Baron Zouche, attempted to raise the status of the town by obtaining a market charter from Edward IV. The charter granted a market each week on Thursday and two fairs, one on the eve, day and morrow of St Philip and St James’s Day (May 1st) and one on St. Margaret’s Day (20th July). The weekly market had
lapsed again by 1614 when a further charter was granted by James I, but the May fair was kept up into the 19th century although not always on the precise date – the diarist Parson Woodforde records spending the evening at this fair with his brother John on 28th May 1765. The 1614 charter granted a weekly Tuesday market and an annual fair on the Thursday before Palm Sunday. A Market House was erected on the site of the medieval market cross but by 1707 the market was described as ‘paltry’ and in 1740 as ‘much decayed’. By
1780 it had long been discontinued and the Market House was converted into dwellings around 1790 and subsequently replaced by a large house. However, occasional fairs were still held for selling cattle and sheep and for entertainment. In 1831 there were seven cattle
markets and three fairs and by 1839 the cattle market was held fortnightly and the September market had been revived for sheep. Motivated by the trading prospects afforded by the imminent arrival of the railway, a Market House Company was formed in

couple of cells to accommodate the town’s trouble-makers. The floors above were intended for reading rooms and space for large meetings and social functions. On market days both the Market Place and High Street as well as Bailey Hill behind the Market House were given over to the display and sale of livestock, and a well-known drawing by S A Galton shows the lock-up surrounded by sheep pens and pigs on the occasion of the May
Fair in 1884. It wasn’t until 1913 that a new market yard was opened at Millbrook, behind what is now the Horse Pond Inn, but this was not a lasting success and closed in 1940. General markets ceased many years ago and the Market House had long outlived its original purpose. Nowadays the ground floor is home to the town council office and tourist information centre – where visitors can see the cells, complete with a model prisoner – and the upstairs contains the town’s excellent museum. Recent extensive improvements have given the building a new lease of life with the shambles area at the back being roofed and heated to provide a venue for exhibitions, consultations on local issues, small scale arts events including drama, music and poetry, meetings of local groups and the inevitable coffee mornings. Glazing has been installed between the shambles area and the undercroft, but the impressive wooden doors have been renovated and retained. So Castle Cary is once again an old market town, and it’s the ‘old’ that attracts those with an eye for history, for the town retains much of its past to admire. A notable example is the George Hotel opposite the Market House, which has been part of Cary’s street scene since the 17th century. A datestone on one wall states 1673 but it could have existed earlier as tradition has it that stone from the castle ruins was used in its building. Thomas Cox was the first recorded landlord and by 1788 George Pew was not only the landlord but also ran the local post and excise office

Castle Cary from here. In 1842 the inn had nine bedrooms, two kitchens and stabling for nearly 100 horses, but in 1845 the back part was destroyed in a disastrous fire and subsequently rebuilt. Later the George also served as the parcel office for the Great Western Railway and omnibuses from here met trains at Cary Station twice daily in the years before the First World War. MOTOr iNG ViNTAGe Motor Cycling I START this month with my photograph. Last month I mentioned that the Wessex Veteran and Vintage Section was to have its first riding event of the year. Well Sunday the 27th April dawned rather wet and the forecast was very downbeat, but undaunted 10 entrants turned up and had a jolly good ride. Starting from Hinton St Mary village hall a circular route of 40 miles saw everyone return safely despite the many flooded roads. Refreshments both before and after the run were, as usual, a special bonus. My picture shows Section Chairman, Mike Smith, on the left assisting Dave Joyce unload two bikes from the trailer. The nearest bike is a 1913 Ivy belonging to Dave’s friend Terry Scotchmer and the rear bike is Dave’s 1908 Singer. Each of these bikes are now very rare. Both men had travelled from Somerset to attend. These small events are always friendly and just what the club should be about. I have mentioned before that the government is gradually moving to a paperless society. In furtherance to this you may have heard that lots of people have had problems when submitting their driving licences to the DVLA. Well at least a piece of paper or a plastic card is tangible and carries some authority. You may need to submit your licence to the DVLA for many reasons, for example a change of address, or when you have passed a test to drive an additional group of
vehicles. When getting a new licence you must check that the groups of vehicle you drive have been included. Many licences have been returned with groups left off and to date no records exist of anyone successfully being able to claim them back. The worse circumstance seems to be when drivers apply for a new licence when approaching their 70th birthdays. It seems that the DVLA will automatically drop categories ‘C’ and ‘D’ at that age unless you make proper application to retain them. Sometimes they have automatically withdrawn the ‘A’ (Motorcycles) group and riders have not noticed and ridden on without a valid licence, even though they might have been riding for many years. As I said no-one has got the entitlement reinstated, other than going back and taking the appropriate test all over again. Everyone approaching 70, or anyone needing to submit their licence for any other reason, needs

to take preventative action before doing so. Merely taking a photocopy of the licence before submission is not good enough. Prepare by getting your Driving Licence number and your National Insurance number and the postcode as it appears on your licence. There are some useful web sites available to help. To find out what the DVLA record shows for you go to www.gov. uk/help/beta. Try also www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence and www.viewdrivingrecord. service.gov.uk/drivingrecord/viewbydln and you might be surprised at the information they hold on all of us. At these sites you can copy all the information available. For those without computer access there is always the postal route, get a form from the Post Office and submit it with the fee of £5 and you should get a hard copy of the same information. You have been warned so take preventative action should something go wrong at a later date. June is here already and we’re nearly half way through another year. Events continue as ever and details are as follows. The Somerset Section has an Evening Run for its club night on the 5th and this is followed on the 8th with their GirderFork/Pre 50 Run from Emborough. The Wessex Veteran and Vintage Section have their Shearstock Run on the 2nd and
they have a guest speaker at their club night at East Stour on the 10th. The Dorset Section starts with an Evening Run for its club night on the 11th, and have a Mid Week Run on Wednesday 18th. The Purbeck Run will be held on the 22nd and the Jeff Clew Memorial Run on the 29th. Not content with those, Dorset will also have their Lunch Meet on the 4th and the Breakfast Meet on the 28th. As if that were not enough, the Wells Classic Motorcycle Club have their Tortoise and Hare Run on the 8th which raises lots of money for charities. Ring me on 01935-872528 for further details of any of the above events. Another event, which is a must for me each year, is our national clubs Banbury Run held on the 8th June. Held at Gaydon in Oxfordshire it is the largest event in the world for machines made before 1931. Around 600 machines of all types from the earliest days of motoring up to 1930 will be there facing the challenge provided. Always a scenic route carefully planned through the beautiful Oxfordshire villages makes a splendid backdrop for these ancient machines. To coax them around the 40, 60 or 70 mile routes with the earlier bikes often needing some LPA (Light Pedal Assistance) makes for quite a spectacle. LPA actually means getting off and pushing up the slightest inclines. Several hills have become recognised viewing points and some spectators take pity on the riders and assist in the pushing duties. Even the lightest machines take some pushing up hill when clad in full riding gear. As most riders are now well past their prime any such assistance is gratefully received. A great day for all involved is assured and the camaraderie engendered by these enthusiasts is infectious. Yours truly will be riding a later machine and should evade the pushing duties, even with the wife riding pillion, but you never quite know what will happen and what lies ahead. What a boring world it would be if we knew all that was about to happen. What is life without a bit of spice about it? Rod Hann.

enthusiast. ‘Lord Fisher’ and the Miniature railway will both be in action. On both days the ever popular Bug Fest will be present and on Saturday a display of Birds of Prey will also feature. A number of model railways, including a substantial Gauge 1 layout, will be operating, a Railwayana display, steam lorry, Class 50 cab visits and much more are all expected. For those who enjoy a pint a Real Ale bar will be in operation alongside a BBQ. A first will be UK Railtours running an excursion using South West Trains Class 159 units with half the passengers visiting Gartell Light Railway near Templecombe first, while the other half come to Yeovil with the groups swapping over by bus later. On the Sunday Steams Dreams are bringing 34046 ‘Braunton’ at the head of a railtour. The steam engine will use the original Southern Railway turntable with visitors able to watch the action from the special viewing platform. Visitors are encouraged to arrive by public transport if possible. The Centre is part of Yeovil Junction station (Waterloo-Exeter line). Cycle-Babble WHILST CYCLING can of course be enjoyed as a solitary pursuit, like most things, it is an experience often enhanced by the presence of other, like-minded, people. Whether it be someone to take the lead when the legs and the heart are flagging, someone to help with an untimely mechanical problem, or just someone with which to share a well-earned coffee and a cake, as you fondly think back over the hard-won miles you've have just covered, riding with friends beats riding alone any day. One of the best ways of finding those like-minded cycling companions is by joining a cycling club. Visitorland is blessed with a number of clubs all welcoming new members, with the aim of developing and growing the sport. You can find your nearest club by using the club finder facility on the British Cycling website (www. britishcycling.org.uk/clubfinder) but one of the largest in the area is the Yeovil Cycling Club (YCC). Mark Fisher from YCC has been in touch to tell CB more about the club. Founded in 1928 and boasting a membership of over 100 riders (2013) it organises a number of different events throughout the year, from regular weekend rides, through to summer evening time-trials and three annual road races. A ffilia t ed t o b ot h B rit ish Cycling and the CTT (the governing body for time trials) as well as being a founding member of the Taunton Vale Cycle Racing Association (www.tvcra.co.uk), the club's weekend rides are a good starting point and are graded according to ability with three different groups normally taking to the road. ‘The Sunday club runs are very popular and often extend to three groups of different abilities,’ says Mark. ‘The first group cover a shorter distance, about 40 to 50 miles, at a sensible pace, the second group go slightly further, 50 to 60 miles, at a faster pace, and then we have the the hooligans! These club runs and the evening time trials are the mainstay of the club’s activity, like most traditional ‘road orientated’ cycling clubs.’ Weekday time-trials take place in the summer months when the longer daylight hours permit riding in the evening. Distances vary, from five to ten miles, and the club also organise three open time trial races throughout the season, including one 25 mile race
against the clock. They are also responsible for organising three mass-start road races around the area including the upcoming, 104km long, John Andrews Memorial Road Race, which starts in Long Sutton and takes in 12 laps of a tough circuit that skirts Langport. Mark pointed me to the archive section of their website and I spent a fascinating hour or so flicking through various press clips from over the years. One story in particular caught my eye. A story from the 1960s about a talented, young, Yeovil cyclist heading to the continent in a bid to make his mark on the European circuit. The 19-year-old quit his job as a carpenter, took his £100 bike and enough money to fund himself for only a month, and ‘set sail for France hoping to become another Tommy Simpson!’ Before boarding the boat he held YCC's record times for 10, 25 and 50 miles and had already accumulated a large tally of race victories including, in a story that reads like some of the legendary Tour de France tales, a win in the Harting Hill 50. There, after having trouble with his gears, the rider accepted the offer of a stranger's bike and carried on, only to have to stop again, borrow a spanner, and adjust the saddle. He then chased back a two-mile deficit to win. His plan was to win enough in France to extend his stay beyond a month. I found myself wanting to know how the young adventurer fared and so was happy to then find a smaller, later piece, informing the reader that he was ‘doing fine’ having won the Grand Prix Messager-Pepin by over two minutes. I was touched to read that if nothing else the young man's spirit of adventure had been rewarded with a win in Europe. It was with great sadness then that, continuing to scroll through the articles, I discovered that not a year later he was killed in a road accident. A talent cut down in his prime. The youngster's name? John Andrews, now remembered by his club every year with that 104km race starting in Long Sutton. YCC's John Andrews Memorial RR takes place on 8th June. Wedding Flowers
A wide variety of flowers and herbs have been used in wedding bouquets throughout the centuries and although flowers have a long history of use, originally herbs were more common. The ancient Greeks are credited with the first recorded use of wedding flowers but it was more common to use herbs in a bridal bouquet than it is today. Bridal bouquets were originally formed from interwoven garlands and wreaths which were placed on the heads of both bride and groom.
Herbs such as Rosemary and Marjoram were common in the bridal crowns of Greek brides, as well as other herbs and garlic. Many herbs were believed to have magical powers to ward off evil spirits and bad luck and were used to protect the future of the bridal couple. Dill was said to be the herb of lust and a bride would only lust after her husband if she carried Dill and garlic together. Sage was believed to be a herb of wisdom and the bride who carried Sage and garlic together was believed to learn goodness and gather great wisdom.

Wine & Dine Gooseberries
WE’RE approaching gooseberry season, a fruit which can divide a nation (a bit like Marmite), you either love ’em or hate ’em! Gooseberries have been around since Elizabethan times when they were highly spiced and boiled to a thick purée, as raw fruit was considered bad for your health. In the 17th century when sugar became easier to obtain and cheaper, gooseberries were used in pies and tarts and the use of spices declined. Related to the blackcurrant, the gooseberry bush produces large grape-sized fruit but with a more spherical shape. The skin is slightly hairy. Early in the season, from May to June, they are bright green in colour with a veined effect on the skin. These are best used for cooking as they are quite hard and tart. Later on, from late June to August, softer, sweeter varieties become available, often yellow or red in colour, and they are good to eat raw. Choose berries that yield to the touch, and are juicy. Gooseberries have a low
calorific value (30 cal per 100g) as they contain little sugar. They are rich in potassium, vitamin C and certain trace elements. Gooseberries are really quite versatile and can be used to make tarts, sorbets, fools, jellies, syrups, chutneys and a delicious sauce to serve with fish, such as mackerel, or meat, such as pork, duck or goose. To prepare the fruit, top and tail (snip off the stem and the flower ends from each one with some kitchen scissors), then wash. If you're planning to sieve the cooked berries there's no need to top and tail. Poach the fruit for 10-15 minutes and use to make crumbles or pies (always let the fruit cool before adding your pastry to prevent it going soggy), or purée to make gooseberry fool, and ice cream.
Method
1. Put the fruit in a pan with the water, bring to the boil and simmer for 15 minutes,
stirring from time to time with a wooden spoon. 2. When soft, rub the pulp through a sieve.

The Pilgrims Restaurant has just won its second AA Rosette – reserved for ‘Excellent restaurants that aim for and achieve higher standards and better consistency. I CELEBRATEd a recent birthday (if celebrate is indeed still the word) by visiting the Queens Head in Corton denham – one of this magazines regular advertisers. Chastising myself for not going there for a while, guilt was soon overcome after tasting their ales. Being a genuine free house, there was an interesting
cross-section of beers and some excellent choices from breweries overseas, Belgium and the United States being particularly notable. We were particularly impressed by the beer menu – yes, a BEER menu, which we believe is absolutely essential for any selfrespecting pub with a good selection of beers. We were also impressed by the bar staff – Catherine and Geoff, who were not only friendly and helpful but also knew a lot more about their products on display than many places we have visited. The food appeared special as well (although we were not eating on this occasion) and whether one wanted to call it bordering on the pretentious or simply ‘upper-end’ I would leave to you. It looks like we will be dining there next time then (even the fish and chips looked something special). The Campaign for Real Ale seems to go from strength to strength, as does those investing with the Camra Members Investment Club. Real Ale is clearly the flavour of the year – along with those brewing it.

Personally, our membership has been renewed for the umpteenth time, and along with our renewal comes the £20 worth of 50p tokens to be used on the purchase of Real Ale at Wetherspoons pubs and Lloyds No.1 bars. To be quite
honest, only a few of these get used every year as I am not a fan of our local ’Spoons, and if I go elsewhere I tend to be the driver anyway. However, I do think they represent good value insofar as two meals can still work out cheaper than one, although they don’t employ chefs from what I understand. Wetherspoons boss Tim Martin attacked the tax system of this country in a recent edition of the CAMRA monthly paper What’s Brewing. As he rightly points out, food bought at his chain or any other is subject to a tax of 20% why?Food purchased at Supermarkets has no VAT and their alcohol is sold as loss leaders, whereas, years ago, they
sold little alcohol and the local pub had an ‘Off License’ for anything one wanted to takeaway. An unfair trading practice? You bet it is. An average Wetherspoon pub pays £13,000 every WEEK according to the VAT Campaigner Jacques Borel. Thirty years ago VAT doubled to 15% (I remember it well) now it is 20% as we all know. In the last ten years we have lost 15% of Britain’s pubs - some 10,000 - and with those pubs go the host of jobs plus the other jobs in complimentary trades that rely on them. I had not heard of ‘VAT Club Jacque Borel’ until I picked
up one of his brochures in a pub; and my reader may remember our reporting of the ‘Tax Equality day’ last year when many pubs reduced their VAT in support of the campaign. (We visited The Quicksilver Mail in Yeovil, which was a participant). This year the ‘day’ will be Wednesday 24th September. Remember it – it’ll be here sooner than you think! Meanwhile I congratulate M. Borel on his success in other countries in getting the VAT down, and wish him all good speed in doing the same over here. My thanks to those who wrote

to me regarding the happenings at their local pub in respect of tenant changes and what they feel about the way their pub, as well as the way their landlords have been treated. It all makes fascinating and somewhat depressing reading if these things are true, and I have no reason to doubt these good people, who have oft parted with their hardearned cash at their local. However, I am unable to report things verbatim as I have a feeling it would be a case of ‘Good Morning, Judge’ if we are not careful. Particular thanks to the Gentleman who wrote to me via snail-mail. Thank you, Sir! A rather interesting development has taken place within the licensed trade recently. Hot on the heels of the ‘Pound Shop’ comes a ‘Pound Pub’. You got it – beer for a pound! Actually, this is £1 for a half-pint and £1.50 for a pint. Well, with the token from CAMRA mentioned earlier, ale can often be around this price for a pint anyway, and the first of these pubs has opened in Stockton-on-Tees, Middlesbrough. However, serving beer from 8 am. in an area known to have a higher than average number of hospital admissions for alcohol related harm, I think this will confirm the fears of those who believe this will attract the wrong people and have a negative effect on the area. Well, we have the summer to get over it, and we all need the change. My time spent in front of the computer chasing variations on the great game still continues, and this month my fellow pub game enthusiast Mark Shirley recently sent me this link which I hope you will find interesting: www.dover-skittles.co.uk I was aware that there was a league in dover, and have very briefly mentioned it in the past, however, do take a look at this if you are able, for it was started by someone who came from around these parts, and some 60 years later and it is still going strong. According to the history page of the league, ‘one Len Latchem moved to dover from Somerset probably after the war’. He initially set up a couple of fish and chip shops before taking over a pub, the Red Lion in Charlton Green. There had been a threerink bowling green behind the

pub, which had been damaged during the war and the cost of reconstruction was prohibitive. So Len, being a true West Country boy, set up a skittle alley. Looking at the pictures of the early days of the league, I would say these pins are very much skittles as we know them (as apposed to North Somerset smaller and slimmer, or the South Wales thin ones for example). Interestingly, it would appear that all the alleys are out of doors, something that we never see in the West Country (unless you know better) or at best they are just ‘covered’. One would have to go to the Midlands (say, Nottingham) to see their version of skittles which they call ‘Long Alley’, to find any pubs with the alleys out-doors. Perhaps there is a relative or family friend who remembers Len and where he lived in Somerset? Why did Len move to dover in the first place? Love interest, perhaps? I for one would be delighted if we could trace this person who clearly did his bit to spread the beautiful game to the less civilized areas of

Gardening feeding and mulching makes life in mid-summer that much easier and gets plants into good strong growth. They flower longer and keep their foliage in better condition, and healthy plants resist diseases longer. Garden pests are on the other hand not fussy about what they eat and a watchful eye is needed to stay ahead of them. Garden centres are full of lovely plants often in flower. There is nothing wrong with buying a plant in full flower and you do know what you’ve got, but choose carefully, avoid problem plants, and look after them with regular watering when you get them home. at least one rose in it! Traditionally roses were grown in the industrial areas of England where the smoky sulphur laden air killed off the fungal diseases such as Blackspot and downy Mildew, leaving the roses cleaner. pollution has lessened and rose diseases have increased accordingly(this is not an argument for pollution, just an observation). To grow good roses you need to appreciate the need to look after them, feeding the plant and the soil with slow release fertiliser and organic matter, spraying with a combined fungicide and insecticide to help
them fight infections. Local clay soils suit roses down to the ground – just as long as you can add well rotted compost or manure. Planting has also changed over the years. The roses themselves are grafted onto rootstock growing in long rows in the field. When the graft has taken and some new growth achieved, then in the late summer the plant is dug up. This is known as a bare root rose and can be sold straight away – usually by mail order, or potted up for sale throughout the year. You may have noticed that the compost will often fall away from the roots of a rose planted between October and May. After that the root structure has developed and will hold it all together. Roses are pretty tough and will mostly survive planting at anytime with a little bit of care. The list of rose varieties grows longer each year with new colours and styles. The summer garden shows at Chelsea and more importantly Hampton Court are the places to see the new varieties

Gardening being introduced. Breeders are often criticised for a lack of scent in their creations and it is true that in the breeding process you may have found fantastic colour and disease resistance, but suffer from lack of scent, or a beautiful scented rose is an awful colour! That’s just the way it goes. June is full of roses and because they are grown in pots you can plant them at anytime of the year, even when in full flower so you can really see what you’re getting. And if its scent you’re after, have a look at the wonderful david Austin roses – these are often old fashioned shrub roses bred with modern varieties to get the best of all worlds. Clever stuff and a remarkable achievement for British roses.

The veg garden is now looking much better, last year’s rain has made sure we don’t run out of moisture just yet. Newly sown salads need to be kept watered as the seeds germinate to prevent their failure. Potatoes will need watering as well if they are to produce a decent crop, but water can be conserved by applying it early in the day so that it doesn’t evaporate before it can soak in.
Wet leaves over night are never a good idea as those are the perfect conditions for fungal disease to develop. There are signs that this could be a (potato) blight year, so I am strongly tempted to use a preventative copper spray on the leaves. It is not absorbed into the plant but stops fungal spore carried in the wind from developing and ruining the crop. Carrots can be tricky sometimes. We get the best results with a fairly firm and even seed bed, sown thinly and preferably with a waning moon. The effect of gravity is important on a root crop. Leafy crops are best sown or transplanted with a waxing or strengthening moon. It may sound strange but it works. Outside the veg plot, you need to support taller growing plants such as delphiniums, and hollyhocks, restrain rampant

Gardening spreaders and remain firmly in control over the weeds. If you don’t then they will crowd out the plants you do want before you have realised it. Take out flowering spikes as soon as they have finished to keep plants flowering. Most annuals and tender perennials should be hardened off by now and ready to be planted out. This is best done on a day that is overcast as it helps to reduce the shock to the plant, then water them in well. Our weather is predictably unpredictable, so watch out for
cold or strong winds, prolonged dry periods or hail! Apart from that, all should be fine! Hanging baskets and planters that are really full and impressive, are inevitably high maintenance and need regular care and attention with watering, feeding and deadheading if you don’t want them to exhaust themselves by the middle of July. perennial weeds as they become obvious. There is always a push hoe somewhere nearby to use on the seedling and annual weeds. Lawns need regular mowing to keep down the broadleaved weeds and encourage the finer leavedgrasses. If you mow and remove the clippings then you really should feed it. Good multipurpose lawn treatments are not nearly as expensive as they used to be and the difference is noticeable. The pest and diseases are now evident, greenfly and black spot will be the most common especially on roses. The weather will govern the amount of mildew or botrytis we see. Hot weather will produce powdery mildews, and wet evenings will encourage blackspot on roses and downy mildews. Cold wet weather generally encourages botrytis – good ventilation will help. Combined rose fungicides and insecticides work well, and if you make sure the plant doesn’t get under stress by giving it adequate feed and water, you should be

able to get the best out of them. June is often dead plant month, as so many problems suddenly show up at this time – plants that have suffered over the winter, can live on their sap for a while then suddenly collapse. Cut back to healthy growth if possible. If it’s not possible plant a new one. Attend to the topiary – trim box and bay trees, then feed and top up the compost in the pot. Most evergreens can be trimmed, and keep wall shrubs and climbers tied in and prune off the growth that is obviously heading in the wrong direction. In the vegetable garden plant out runner beans, tomatoes, courgettes and anything else you’ve been hanging on to. Keep regular small sowings of salad crops and mange tout peas, they will still crop in time. Leeks should be planted out, carrots sown (late crops are less likely to be attacked by carrot root fly) onions hoed, sweet corn sown, parsnips sown and herbs planted out. Spinach can be sown repeatedly – treat it like a salad crop, and if you like rocket then sow that but sow a little every now and again to get a constant supply. Greenhouse tomatoes need constant removal of side shoots and weekly feeding – switch from general fertiliser to tomato fertiliser as the first flowers

THIS MONTH we’re taking a look at some of the most important nutrients for men’s health. Co Enzyme Q10 - This is a potent anti-oxidant vital for energy metabolism in the body. Levels of Q10 decrease with age so it is a popular supplement for older people. Q10 is a good heart health nutrient that may help manage blood pressure and is often used in treatment protocols for cardiomyopathy, angina and congestive heart failure. It is also worth noting that it is this nutrient that becomes depleted by the use of statins, leading to one of their common side effects - muscle pain. Many experts now recommend taking CoQ10 when using statins. CoQ10 is also used to treat fibromyalgia, neuropathies, gingivitis, enhancing athletic performance and improving sperm count. CoQ10 can be found in peanuts, pistachios and sesame seeds but it is strongly recommended you choose to supplement if trying to treat a particular ailment. Magnesium - This essential mineral is often found to be lacking in modern diets. Its roles in the body include bone and muscle health, blood clotting, synthesis of protein and essential fatty acids as well as energy production. Magnesium is also used to treat certain migraines, headaches, muscle cramps / spasms, chronic fatigue syndrome, anxiety and insomnia. Look to leafy greens, whole grains and nuts and seeds (especially almonds and cashews) as good dietary sources of this mega mineral. Lycopene - This carotenoid that gives a red pigment to many foods is a potent anti-oxidant. Lycopene is especially helpful with regard to prostate health. It is thought to encourage the self destruction of cancer cells in the prostate. Lycopene may also be helpful to enhance the skin's protection from the sun, keep arteries clear of plaque formation and act as a general boost to immune function. Tomatoes are a particularly good food source of lycopene (there is some evidence that tomato juice may not offer the same level of protection as other forms). Watermelon, guava, pink grapefruit, papaya and red peppers are also useful food sources. Zinc - This mineral is a component of over 300 enzymes in the human body. Zinc is important for the repair of wounds, boosting immunity, the synthesis of proteins, cellular reproduction and the enhancement of fertility. Zinc is often used in treatment programmes for acne, infections (especially sore throats in the form of lozenges), male infertility, night blindness, wound healing, poor appetite, loss of taste or smell, prostatitis (infection or inflammation of the prostate) and as a boost to athletic performance. Good food sources include spinach, pumpkin seeds, wheatgerm, cocoa, cashew nuts and beans.

Saw Palmetto - OK, not technically a nutrient, but a very important herb! I SEE THAT the Western Daily Press has a new editor. Tim dixon has apparently ‘decided to step down to take on the new role of commercial editor of the newspaper’, according to the report in the 7th May issue. What it doesn’t explain is what the new role entails and how an editor differs from a commercial editor, which gives rise to plenty of idle speculation. His replacement is Ian Mean, a man who has had a fairly long
career with the paper’s publishers. He is quoted as saying that ‘the newspaper has a very loyal readership with an intense interest in the region’ but worryingly he adds that ‘we intend to harness the ideas and writing power of those readers to help to create content’. Worrying because he might be meaning that group of inveterate (and usually tedious) correspondents who air their predictable views time and time again on the letters pages and about whom I wrote at some length in last month’s column. God forbid! When the price of the paper increased last year, Tim dixon went on record as stating ‘we’ve redoubled our efforts to improve the quality of the content we offer readers, with the emphasis placed squarely on accuracy’. A letter in the 9th May issue suggests that a bit more emphasis would not go amiss. ‘do you not check anything before you print? You printed a very good article about the slaughter of turtle doves in Malta, but once again you spoilt it completely by printing a picture of collared doves. You are spoiling this paper with more and more basic schoolboy errors.’ Perhaps
