’M nEvER quite sure, when it comes to long-dead writers, whether it is the anniversary of their birth, their death or the publication of their most significant book that should be commemorated. If it’s their birth, then television, radio and the newspapers have been very remiss in overlooking the centenary in June of one of England’s most highly acclaimed 20th century novelists. Barbara Pym was born on 2nd June 1913. She had six novels published between 1950 and 1961 but with the onset of the ‘swinging sixties’ the subjects and style of her fiction – gentle observations of the eccentricities of everyday life, delicately written with understated humour – went out of fashion and she failed to find a publisher for her subsequent books. But in 1977 when the Times Literary Supplement invited a selection of critics to name the writers they considered to be the most underrated in the previous 75 years, Barbara Pym was the only living author to be mentioned by more than one critic. After having had nothing published for 16 years the enthusiastic praise from Philip Larkin and Lord David Cecil generated renewed interest in her work. A new novel, ‘Quartet in Autumn’, was accepted for publication and was so well received that it was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. And her six earlier books were republished as paperbacks. There followed two more new works, the latter published shortly after her death in January 1980, then two of the novels that had been rejected in the 1960s and a third that was her earliest completed novel but never submitted for publication. And a collection of material from her diaries, notebooks and letters was published in 1984 in the form of an autobiography. Countless writers and critics have lauded her skills as a novelist, among them John Betjeman who described her as ‘a splendid humorous writer’, Philip Larkin who felt ‘she has a unique eye and ear for the small poignancies and comedies of everyday life’, and Jilly Cooper for whom ‘Barbara Pym’s
gentle, slyly comic novels always remind me of Jane Austen’. Her work has also been compared with that of Anthony Trollope and Stella Gibbons. Her childhood was spent on the edge of the small town of Oswestry in Shropshire and in the last decade of her life she lived in the Oxfordshire village of Finstock. Her intimate knowledge of rural areas not very different to Visitorland is apparent in several of her novels and especially in ‘A Few Green Leaves’, the last book she wrote. In it she explores in her gently ironic style the quiet revolution in English village life in the 1970s, conveying for 21st century readers a vivid sense of how it was some 40 years ago when that part of the English social scene was changing increasingly fast. The American branch of the Barbara Pym Society celebrated her centenary earlier this year. Why in England did we let it pass unnoticed? NN.

Couple Appointed MBEs
Sir, My name is Colin Dorey and I am just emailing with regards to the Queen’s Birthday Honours list. I am the son of Peter and Jean Dorey of Gillingham, Dorset who were appointed MBE's for their services to children. They have been foster parents for 40 years now and have looked after over 65 children during this time, from babies to teenagers! My parents have helped so many children and their families that there are too many to mention, but many stay in touch and they have been invited to weddings of children they have looked after, as well as Christenings, etc. Over the last 40 years they have gone out of their way to help and have sacrificed many things. I believe in those 40 years they have only had 5 holiday trips and been out of the country 3 times, 2 of them to visit myself here in Sweden. They have never really decorated their home as they have always had children running around and dad has always said when they give up fostering then he will do up the house, but seeing as they are both well into their 60's and still have a house full of kids, I can't see that happening anytime soon!! now you may wonder why I have sent you this email, well first as you can guess I am very proud and want everyone to know. Secondly we all know the stories of the popstars, sportsmen, actors and politicians and what they have done, but we don't always hear enough about people like my parents. I know I would

The Royal British Legion Baltonsborough Branch - 90 years old and going strong
Sir, The British Legion was formed nationally on 1 July 1921, granted a Royal Charter in 1925 and became The Royal British Legion on 1 July 1971. Having been requested to produce a history of our local village Branch, to commemorate its formation 90 years ago this year: 22 February 1923 to be exact, this has proved somewhat difficult - so far. Your help will be appreciated. In December 1923 a concert was held in the Baltonsborough village school, then sited on Martin St/Church Walk, at which The British Legion handed over the ownership of the village war memorial and site to the Parish Council by giving them the deeds. The responsibility for the maintenance of the Garden was retained by the village British Legion in an undertaking given at that ceremony and has been kept to this day. My research visits to Somerset County archives produced nothing. Brief coverage of the quest in the local press including The Visitor and the Parish News & Views, also produced very little apart from two interesting meetings with two ‘old’ villagers on their family memories based on the British Legion Hall sited on Ham Street, near St Dunstan’s stone, where much of the village social activities took place. The Hall was known and referred to as the Legion Hut. With thanks to Joan Higgins and Maureen Spraggen for responding. My research has also included
the reading of several decades of Parish News, now called News & Views, where the British Legion, and its hall, are mentioned in connection with numerous village social activities; weekly youth club, wedding / christening receptions, dances and regular bingo sessions. The Legion hall was used for a children’s party to celebrate the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, having a television set specially installed for the occasion. Thanks to Louise Clapp for the use of her archives for the back issues of The Parish News. In passing I would mention that the current format and information contained in the News & Views is considerably more informative about village life, activities and views than hitherto. To fully appreciate that comment you would have to read the earlier editions! As reported in the Central Somerset Gazette in 1961 the then vicar, Rev. C W Bishop, said in an interview “... there is no village hall, we have to associate with The British Legion for all public events in the village.” I am sure it was not intended to come across like that but more an expression of the widespread frustration in the village at there being no village Hall! A village hall was established on the north side of the Playing Fields in September 1976. At present I do not know when the Legion Hall closed. All the above illustrates how central the British Legion (and its hall) held an important role in the life of Baltonsborough. Our local Royal British Legion
Branch continues its participation in village activities having a strong membership, actively arranging regular talks on a wide range of topics at its meetings and the annual summer BBQ has become a tradition extremely well supported by the village. Through a series of annual village Poppy Concerts in the late 1990’s to 2005 and specifically the joint one held at Strode Theatre, Street, the local RBL were able to contribute to both the Pre-School Group which enabled them to meet some stringent financial OFSTED requirements and thereby able to continue and also contributed 50% to the purchase of the original chairs for the present village hall. Today, as in the original concept, the local RBL Branch through its Welfare provides assistance and practical help to local ex service personnel quietly and in confidence. It is also responsible for organising the annual village Service of Remembrance in november. now, about that history detail. With the disbanding of the Women’s Section of the Branch during 1975 their Standard was laid up. Their last Standard Bearer was Freda Walton. In St Dunstan’s Church, adjacent to the north door, there remains the brass wall plate for the Standard, Women’s Section. Does any-one have any knowledge what happened to the Standard? I wish to complete our village Branch history therefore any help, information and in particular photographs that show both the Men’s and, in particular, the Women’s Standards, and even photographs of that British Legion Hall/activities within would be much appreciated. Thank you. Castle Cary’s own Somerset carnivals champion, Gordon Stockman, has been awarded the MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. This award for ‘Services to West Country Illuminated Carnivals’ is truly deserved as Gordon, along with his wife Sue, was instrumental in setting up the Carnivals in Somerset Promotions Project which promotes, records and preserves carnival history for generations to come.

The new Mayor of Gillingham, Cllr val Pothecary, was sworn in at the Annual Council meeting on 28th May. On accepting her term of office Cllr Pothecary thanked the outgoing Mayor, Cllr Steve Joyce, for all his hard work in representing the town over the past year. Sad News
The month of May brought sad news to the Britannia Carnival Club with the loss of one of its founder members – nigel (aka Harold) Strickland; an active member up to the end of last year, when his poor health started to get the better of him. Harold will be hugely missed by so many - as a great friend to all that knew him, as an enthusiastic club member, and staunch supporter of local carnivals. Just as importantly he will be fondly remembered as the 12th man for Yeovil Football Club, but sadly he never knew they had won the League 1 play-off, having passed away just the day before ‘the match’. In the early years, Harold not only helped to build the floats, but also performed on them. He put his hand to painting, wiring lighting fixtures and the odd dance routine. Over the years many of the youngsters have been blessed by his knowledge and experience. In the latter years he
took up the role of ground crew dressed uniquely in his white overalls (not the usual blue or red). Last October he was determined to attend Castle Cary Carnival (he had never missed one). Escorted down by Chairman Jiggys’ son Paul, he had pride of place - front row seat by ‘Heathers’ flower shop, being treated like a Lord and waited on by the Burch family, enjoying himself with a pint in his hand. You many remember that Britannia club did not take a cart out last year, but entered with a walking group; Harold attended both Shepton Mallet and Wells Carnivals, travelling in the escort van feasting on Jenny’s fabulous cakes – a true carnivalite to the end. Our cart will go out this year in the memory of both Harold and Bob Kingston; no doubt both looking down upon us, discussing what should have been done to have made it so much better, but hopefully thoroughly enjoying it.

Bruton United win grant to replace pitch

Carolyn Ball raised £169 for vaughan Lee House Residential Care Home through a draw for a wooden elephant stacking set, hand made and donated by Barry Hooper, The Ark Man, as well as from the sale of cakes (donated by Helen McDonald of The Buttercross Tearooms, Somerton), and chicken curry pies (given by Steve & vicki Kiernan of Willows of Somerset delicatessen in Shepton Beauchamp). Bruton United Football Club have received a grant of £12,000 from the Football Foundation, the country’s largest sports charity, allowing them to repair and replace their existing pitch which is currently considered too dangerous for use, causing teams to have to play away from the town. Work on the pitch will include new drains, application of fertiliser and over sowing of seed to ensure fast drainage time and high pitch quality. The new surface will help to improve the game in the area and ensure the required matches are played, as well as increase the number of junior sized pitches available to meet the demands of Bruton United FC’s expanding youth teams. Funded by the Premier League, The FA, and the Government (via Sport England), the Football Foundation is the country’s largest sports charity.
SOMERTON A RELATIvE, now long deceased, of a neighbour of mine always kept a diary when she went on holiday – not a lengthy narrative of what she’d seen and done but an assemblage of brief notes to jog her memory in the days and years ahead. In the autumn of 1964 she visited Somerton and noted that the Market Place was ‘far superior to Dunster, in our opinion’, the church had ‘a very high ceiling beautifully carved’ and its 1626 altar table ‘had bulbous legs, carved and coloured’ and had ‘cost £4’. On a sunny Saturday afternoon in early June I brought an old friend to see Somerton for the first time. For most of the year he splits his time between industrial Corby in northamptonshire,
Raphoe in Ireland’s County Donegal, and Alicante on the south coast of Spain. As we sat in the sun enjoying tea and cakes

right-angle junction of the town’s two original medieval main streets – Broad Street and West Street – with the 17th century Butter Cross and Old Town Hall in the centre. On the south side the White Hart Inn is certainly of medieval origin and allegedly incorporates some of the walls of an ancient castle that once stood on the site. Currently it is closed and enshrouded in scaffolding as the extensive refurbishment I mentioned in last December’s Visitor is now well under way. Because it’s a listed building in a conservation area the changes will not harm the important parts of the structure or its setting, but they should help to ensure that the White Hart continues to thrive for many years to come. Re-opening is planned for sometime in July, I’m told. The adjacent Globe is similarly ancient and interesting, being originally called The Angel and mentioned in the parish records as long ago as 1616. SOMERTON feature of the parish church on the north side of the Market Place is the unusual octagonal tower. Parts of the church date from the early 13th century, the nave was rebuilt in the mid-14th century, and the timber roof dating from around 1510 is certainly ‘beautifully carved’ and is one of the finest in Somerset. Reputedly carved by monks from Muchelney Abbey, it comprises around 7,000 separate pieces with each tie beam supporting a pair of dragons that gradually increase in size towards the altar. On the east side of the Market Place stands the former Red Lion coaching inn. This important listed building dates mainly from the 1770s but includes elements of the previous building on the site, and in recent years it has been sensitively converted into eight town houses while retaining the historic frontage. On the west side, by the front gate to the churchyard, stands the Ladysmith Memorial Hall, better known as the Parish Rooms, and across the road is the Old
Courthouse, extensively refurbished and now providing a superb showcase for some of the finest ceramics, metalwork, woodwork, glass, jewellery, embroidery and photography produced by the Somerset Guild
of Craftsmen. A stroll round the Market Place and along Broad Street to Cow Square well repays the effort for almost every building displays something of interest and many are listed as being of special

SOMERTON stock market on a principal route into Somerton from the countryside. In the 1860s the trees which nowadays line the road were planted to commemorate the wedding of the Prince of Wales who later became King Edward vII, and the beautifully restored drinking trough in front of the listed buildings on Cow Square commemorates his coronation in 1901. It all knocks spots off Dunster! Despite its long and visible history Somerton is very much a town of the 21st century, although this modernity is quite well hidden. The Brunel Shopping Centre, which houses a selection of small shops and
leads to the independent Williams supermarket, is tucked away in old brewery buildings, and the trading estate and modern
business park are out of sight on the town’s north-west edge off Bancombe Road. So, too, is Somerton’s modern Edgar

ARTS The Abundance Garden Trail - Somerset Art Weeks 2013
Seven of Somerset's most magnificent gardens will be the locations for eight dramatic new artworks and installations during the Somerset Art Weeks festival, running from 21st September 6th October 2013. Devised by Somerset Art Works in association with the national Garden Scheme, and funded by Arts Council England, The Abundance Garden Trail will comprise a series of site specific contemporary commissions, placing the new and challenging works within the cultivated garden landscapes of Somerset. The eight artists (Megan Calver, Fiona Campbell, Alison Cockcroft, Kitty Hiller, Leah Hislop, Sue Palmer, Bryony Tidball and Gillian Widden) will respond to the theme of abundance in their own way, whether in social, cultural, political or historical terms. Working closely with the garden owners they will look to use locally sourced materials to compliment (or contrast) the landscape, culture and history of each site. Gardens in the trail are: The Walled Gardens of Cannington (nr Bridgwater, Sedgemoor), Little Yarford Farmhouse (Kingston St Mary, nr. ‘I know you, I’m sure I know you,’ said an elderly farmer who had stopped Michael Cooper in his car, in order to drive his cows along the road. ‘You’re Michael Cooper the artist aren’t you?’ ‘Yes that’s right’ replied the also aging artist glowing with the pleasure of recognition, only to come suddenly down to earth as the old gentleman continued. ‘Ah, I thought you were dead.’ Evidently rumours of his demise were exaggerated for though Michael is semi-retired now after many years with his own gallery in Clarks village, he still does the occasional commission and only last month sold three originals to a client in Kuwait. And now a collection of
A local Diary his highly detailed original watercolours is to be seen at an exhibition of his work at the Somerset Crafts Gallery, Avalon Marshes Centre, Westhay from 2nd - 31st July. It is almost thirty years since Michael Cooper first opened his studio to the public at the top of the stairs in Crispin Hall in Street and since then the Ashcott based artist has gone on to paint many rusty old tractors, tumbledown barns, cattle and poultry and other disappearing scenes of Somerset and farming life. The artist is an active member of Somerset Crafts the group of artists and craftspeople that maintain an all the year round display of their members work at the Avalon Marshes Centre near Westhay. As the monthly featured exhibition Michal’s display is very timely, as the Avalon Marshes Festival also takes place in July between the 22nd and 28th, when various events, talks and walks will take place and a Levels Best Farmers Market of local food producers will make apt neighbours for Michael’s exhibition of farming and country painting.

LANGPORT I LIKE LAnGPORT. The town has a lot to offer anyone interested in local history and architecture, as I’ve written at some length in previous articles, and it’s a pleasant place to visit on a warm summer day. And it seems that other people agree, for when I was there in early June the town centre was bustling. Improved signage now provides a helpful welcome to visitors unfamiliar with the town,
and there is ample free car parking within easy walking distance of the shops and river. The clearest way to understand how and why Langport developed into what can be seen today is to view it from some distance away, such as Muchelney. Looking north you will see a line of hills, stretching some ten miles from east to west, rising gently from the broad flood plain of the River Parrett. This dip Just off A372 Langport to Aller Road

slope is breached by a wide steepsided valley through which the river flows on its course to the moors beyond, and high on the eastern promontory stands a church and a cluster of substantial houses. Beneath this hill a narrow band of buildings reaches across the valley to its western side where the river is bridged. The valley is the Langport Gap, and the origins of the town lie on the dry hilltop which was occupied as long ago as Saxon times. Archaeological evidence shows that it was fortified against the Danes in the early 10th century. But the

LANGPORT River Parrett in the marshy land below was an important means of transport, so a low causeway was built across the valley to the navigable waterside. Some writers claim it was built by the Romans although excavations suggest that it probably dates from sometime in the 12th century. In medieval times buildings lined both sides of the causeway on long narrow plots sloping back to the floodplain, and this layout is still largely intact today. The buildings on the causeway –
Bow Street – date from different periods but most have narrow frontages reflecting the medieval land pattern, and it’s no illusion that some of them appear to be leaning backways, sinking gently into the floodplains of Cocklemoor and Littlemoor. Bow Bridge at the western end of the causeway is where for centuries barges brought commodities in from the Bristol Channel. The present three-arched stone bridge was built in the early 1840s to a design by William Gravatt, one of Brunel’s assistants,
to replace a medieval bridge which, having nine small arches, was a major obstacle to large boats bringing freight upstream to wharves further inland serving Ilchester, Thorney and Westport. Traditional independent shops still predominate in Langport’s town centre, some occupying the intriguing mixture of buildings, some as old as 17th century, that line Bow Street and Cheapside and others round the corner on north Street and in the modern Parrett Close arcade by Cocklemoor car park. Old hilltop Langport contains
much evidence of the town’s past prosperity. The imposing parish church, alas no longer in use, dates from the 15th century but contains remnants of a much earlier building on the site. Most of the elegant houses surrounding it are 19th century but the nearby Hanging Chapel is a remnant of the 14th century fortifications that encircled the town in the Civil War period. Looking westwards between the houses you can catch occasional glimpses of the other part of the town below on the broad floodplain. Most of the town’s 20th century housing is to the north-

town and neighbouring Huish and browse round the shops. Then have lunch – there’s a good choice of cafés and pubs in and around the town – before enjoying a leisurely stroll. Or drive a couple of miles west to Curry Rivel and indulge in a luxury cream tea at Living Pretty in the Old Bakery at the Sandpits Heating Centre on the High Street. From there it’s a short drive along the B3168 to Hambridge and the renowned Brown & Forrest smokery and restaurant at Bowdens Farm. The traditional smokery was established way back in 1981 to smoke eels from the watercourses of the Somerset Levels but over the years the range of smoked
products has expanded to include local venison, duck, chicken and even pork tenderloin marinated in local cider. In addition there is a smokery shop selling the freshlysmoked fish and meat, and a restaurant serving food from the smokery. Or, like me, you could simply sit in the sunshine on the river bank and immerse yourself in a good book. It’s hard to think of a nicer way to spend a warm afternoon, and if the sun gets too hot it’s just a short stroll to the shaded Town Garden. What a delightful way to complete a day in one of the most interesting old towns in Visitorland. Roger Richards.

Cooking ... Think about how you cook. Do you love to entertain or are you more of a ready meal person? If you socialise a lot then a more open plan kitchen would better suit your needs. Do you need a single oven or two or more? What about the microwave, will this sit on the worktop or would you prefer it built in? Maybe you are health conscious and would like a steam oven also, and then there's warming drawers and even built-in coffee machines to consider. Give it all a great deal of thought. The next stage ... When you meet the designer they should ask lots of questions about your home and lifestyle, as they need to build a picture in their mind of

Why should you revamp your bathroom?
Apart from being one of the most

Make it flexible - but be realistic

You'll need at least one solid wall for privacy. If your room is minuscule, cover it with a reflective surface like glass, or bright white or pale tiles. Large tiles make a small space seem bigger, but conversely, so do very small ones, such as mosaics.
One floor is more
Keep the same bathroom flooring throughout. Failing that, fit a low shower tray and choose matching flooring. Trays come in all sorts of materials. The taller the ceiling, the more enclosed the space will feel, so consider lowering your en-suite's ceiling. Ask the advice of your builder and perhaps experiment with white sheets pinned to the walls. Another must in a small space is good bathroom lighting,
so have halogen spots installed they mimic daylight and will instantly make the room seem larger. Ensure you get lighting that conforms to current building regs for shower rooms.
Open up your storage
In the tightest of spaces, open shelves are much more practical because you don't have to factor in space for opening doors and drawers. Have yours built under a vanity unit, to create more storage around the basin, too. choose a glazed shower panel that matches the sliding door panels to let more natural light into the shower cubicle. Similar glazed panels can be created by a glazier to your measurements and design. Once again, consult your local tradesmen and get quotes.

incorporate space for these. You're bound to need plenty of storage, so think about what's to be stored, and the best way of doing it - for example, if you've got lots of suits or dresses, you'll require wardrobes with plenty of hanging space, whereas drawers will suffice for casual clothes.
Assess the layout
Where you place your furniture will be dictated by the size and shape of your bedroom, and the position of the windows and door. First decide where the bed will go,
as this will take up the most space. Don't even think about pushing one side up against a wall - this is not a good look and incredibly impractical if there are two of you sharing it. As you need to be able to walk around it easily, ideally allow 75cm upwards clearance either side, which gives enough space for bedside cabinets. If you've got your heart set on buying a new, larger bed - perhaps a 180cm super king size rather than a 140cm double - you could just about get away with a gap of just 45cm on each side.

The Society of Friends of the Fleet Air Arm Museum (SOFFAAM) are delighted to announce that Major-General Julian Thompson cB, OBE, Royal Marines (Retd.) will
deliver a talk at The Fleet Air Arm Museum on his experiences as commander of 3 commando Brigade during ‘Operation corporate’ the liberation of the Falkland Islands in 1982. Educated at Sherborne School, Julian Thompson joined the Royal Marines aged 18 and served on seven continents over 34 years. Following the invasion of the Falkland Islands by Argentina on 2 April 1982 Julian received orders for Royal Marines from 40, 42 and 45 commando, plus soldiers from 2nd and 3rd Battalions the Parachute Regiment to sail at short notice for the South Atlantic and to be prepared to fight a war 8,000 miles from home. Diplomacy having failed, the Brigade made successful amphibious landings at San carlos on East Falkland during the early hours of 21 May. This was the start of a gruelling three week ‘yomp’ across waterlogged terrain in severe weather conditions surviving mostly on basic rations. After advance operations by Special Forces and thanks to outstanding support by the Royal and Merchant Navies, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and Harriers and helicopters from the Fleet Air Arm and RAF, 3 commando Brigade joined by troops from 5 Infantry Brigade made a final push to

Wincanton Community Hospital Open Day & Fete
The Friends of Wincanton community Hospital (formerly Verrington Hospital) agreed some six years ago that they would discuss major projects with the NHS to jointly fund improvements and additions to the hospital. The ‘Friends’ committee started with the general upgrade of the hospital wards and the car park where £750,000 was funded by the committee towards the overall expenditure of close on £2,000,000 to give the hospital a more modern look and bring it up to the latest clinical requirements. An Open Day has been organised for Sunday 30th June
2013 when the formal opening of the Dr. Marcus Fellows Radiology suite (with a new X-Ray and Scanner unit) will take place. All members of the public are invited to this event which includes a Hog Roast and viewing of the equipment from 11am to 4pm in the hospital’s Blackmore Day Ward. Some car parking will be available at the hospital with an overflow car park at King Arthur’s School which is nearby. The formal unveiling of the Radiology Suite will take place at 1pm along with the commencement of the free hog roast.
The Gartell Light Railway
The Sixth annual Steam and Vintage Fair is to be held on the 27th and 28th July, from 10.00am – 5.00pm. Attractions include steam vehicles both on and off rails, stationary engines, vintage vehicles of all genres, crafts and models with both static and working displays, model boats on and off the water, trade stands and much more. This is organised by one of the volunteer GLR stalwarts, Steve Rodd, who ensures that there is plenty of real ales and cider in the licensed bar! Cycle-Babble IT'S SUMMER and so for the cycling world that means it's time for the big dance. At the end of June the Tour de France rolls out from corsica at the start of its 3360km, three week long journey around l'hexagon. And this year the bash is going to be bigger than ever. For 2013 is the 100th edition of this great race. That, coupled with Sir Bradley Wiggins win last year and his Sky team-mate chris Froome looking a good bet to emulate him this year, means that interest in this year's race is even higher than normal. Something that the publishing houses of the world have not been too slow to notice. The last few months have seen a huge number of new releases celebrating the history of the race (my own - Mountain Kings – included). Now I have declared that interest, let's look at one of the other tomes just released that came winging its way through my door the other day. Mapping Le Tour by Ellis Bacon is a wonderfully presented, 336 page long, hardback, coffee-table sized book that looks back at every Tour since its inception in 1903. Whilst there are books available that offer far more historical detail, what sets Bacon's apart is the quality and detail of the maps that accompany his text. No other offering that I am aware of provides such beautifully created route maps. Each year's edition is presented across a double page spread, with text briefly detailing the highlights of the race along with that year's ‘fast facts’: start and finish point; total distance; longest stage; highest point; number of mountain stages; number of starters and finishers; winning time; average speed and the final podium, alongside a route map in the style of the age. The book also contains some terrific photographs from across the years. Whilst some were familiar to me from other books I've read, many others were new to me. Personally I would have liked a bit more detail on the story of each year's race. Bacon's text gives but the briefest of insights. For example the 1948 edition, an extraordinary race won by Gino Bartali, that arguably helped prevent his native Italy from slipping into civil war, is given just four paragraphs. For me that's a bit of a shame, even if its title reflects the real focus of the book – i.e. the highly visual maps.
The book also contains two other sections and here we do get more detail. The first gives a stage by stage preview of the 2013 Tour, again complete with full route map. With the same space given to every single 2013 stage as that given for an entire edition for previous years, it feels a little unbalanced. Apart from the absence of stage profiles, it's the sort of thing I'd expect to see in a dedicated Tour preview magazine rather than a book and I think will quickly feel dated once the race is over. The final section works better for me. Here Bacon has detailed 20 of the Tour's most memorable places, from mountains like Mont Ventoux and Alpe d'Huez to oft-visited cities such as Bordeaux, and of course the champs-Élysées, the now traditional ending point of every race. Again we get a wonderfully presented, retro-style map, for each of the places, but we are also treated to some of the stories that have been played out there, bringing to life why these places are so special. Whilst personally I would have preferred not to have had the 2013 preview, and instead used that space for more historical perspective, there's much to like about this book. It looks great and is illustrated wonderfully. The detailed maps give Tour fans something that hasn't been on offer before and the text will give any newcomers to the sport a quick insight into the fascinating history of this great event. Just be prepared to go elsewhere to expand that initial knowledge. Mapping Le Tour, published by collins, is available now, rrp £25. ISBN: 978-0-00-750978-2. Before signing off I'd just like to mention a charity ride being undertaken by the son of a colleague of mine. In September chris Medland is riding from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, over the towering peaks of the Pyrenees, in support of Macmillan charity. It's a really tough route, taking in many Tour de France mountains, including one day that includes the Tourmalet, Aspin and Peyresourde in succession - not for the faint-hearted. chris aims to raise over £3000 for this great cause. MOTOR ING VINTAGE Motor Cycling IS YOUR GLASS half full or half empty? I would like to think that mine is half full because I consider myself lucky to have the toys I own and be able to use them. Most enthusiasts always have another goal to lust after, either their ultimate bike or car or whatever your interest may be. I am very lucky to possess the toys I have and no longer crave to own even faster, or more desirable or expensive machines. Very few club members have only one machine and with a choice in the stable what more could we ask for. What prompted these thoughts was watching the news on the television. When you see the plight of people living in shacks with very few possessions and not enough food to feed the family, then what chance would any of them have to participate in a hobby such as ours? Now there are two ways to proceed from here, one is that we
should sell all our possessions and give the money to those in need, and the second is that we should get out and use our vehicles in the knowledge and satisfaction that we can do so, and thank our lucky stars in the process. I am choosing the second option and urge every enthusiast to do the same. Remember that many events do raise money for charity in which case everyone wins. The opportunity to do as I suggest is readily available during July. The Somerset Section has a guest speaker for its club night on the 4th. A few days later on the 7th will be the Veteran and Vintage and Anniversary Run from cossington, an evening meet at Gurney Slade on the 18th and on the 28th they have a Ride to Sammy Millers Museum in Hampshire. The Wessex Veteran and Vintage Section have their Beaded Edge Run from Shillingstone on the 28th. The Dorset Section has a car and Bike Meet at Pulham on the 10th, followed on the14th with the Veteran and Vintage Run from Alweston, and on the 17th by the

Mid Week Run from Wincanton. Remember also the Dorset Sections Lunch Meet on the first Wednesday (3rd) and the Breakfast Meet on the last Saturday (27th) of each month. You will therefore see that events are plentiful so no excuses for not riding. As usual for further information on any of these events ring 01935-872528. The Dorset Section recently held its Weymouth Week which was well supported as usual by visitors from all over the country. Even some from Belgium and Holland. Blessed with fairly good weather again this event is now well established. The week starts with our traditional Weymouth Run on the Sunday and this is followed by five days of riding around scenic Dorset calling at places of interest and covering about a hundred miles per day. Entertainments in a marquee in the evenings makes for a very social week during which old friendships are renewed and new friendships made. There is plenty of scope within Dorset to find new places to visit and routes to get you there, so this event can remain fresh for years to
come. My only disappointment was that not more local riders from Dorset and the surrounding counties took part. Not counting the marshals and officials I think that only five Dorset members rode in the Weymouth Run, which is our premier event of the season, and few others rode in the five subsequent days. I wonder why? Several people have enquired about the progress of my Rover rebuild. Well little has happened as my workshop facilities are now practically zero. The good news for us is that the building of our new house is now proceeding at pace. Three and a half weeks ago we had a habitable bungalow, that has disappeared and the new building is up to floor level. We hope the current fine weather continues as this will make the whole process speed ahead. My picture this month proves my circumstance. It shows me with my machine hoist in the centre of our yard doing some servicing and cleaning on my Kawasaki. You will note the very spacious surroundings and the excellent light, with the warm breeze of summer cooling my

furrowed brow. Therefore all work must be done in fine weather as poor weather dictates a very different state of affairs. My recent riding events have taken me to parts of cornwall, Devon, Somerset and most of Dorset. Mostly held in warm and dry summer weather there has been much to be enjoyed. Typically my recent trip to cornwall saw the route following the small coast roads from Wadebridge right down to Lands End. The sky was blue and the spectacular views were clear, the sea was as blue as the sky and calm. With bluebells and wild flowers in abundance and the smell of wild garlic in the air, and with superb coastal views and pretty countryside anyone not enjoying such a trip must be riding with their eyes closed. Without the encumbrance of waterproof overtrousers and thick gloves and many layers of warm woolly jumpers it somehow gives a sense of freedom and wellbeing. There are such wonderful places to visit in this country of ours I often question the attractiveness of going abroad. Good weather does however bring up alternative problems and a pet hate of mine is to see young people riding motorcycles and scooters wearing vests or short sleeved shirts, shorts and even flip-flop shoes. This is madness and proper protective clothing must be worn at all times, even on short rides. Grazes to arms and legs is one thing but severe gravel rash to limbs involving loss of flesh is quite another. My message to all motorcyclists is to please be sensible and ride with the correct kit, no matter how hot the temperature rises. I am now off to examine my collection of bikes and bits and may take a glass of something cool and refreshing with me. What I can tell you is that my glass is definitely half full, I trust and hope that yours is likewise. Rod Hann.
The BBc’s popular early evening programme, Celebrity Antiques Road Trip, was filmed recently at Lawrences of crewkerne with celebrity participants Fern Britton and her husband Phil Vickery. In the company of two experienced antiques experts, James Braxton and Mark Stacey, the foursome had travelled around Devon and Somerset for two days purchasing antiques. They all arrived at the crewkerne saleroom to see how their judgments had paid off when the lots were offered to a packed room of the usual eager dealers and collectors. Under the hammer, there was a surprising variety on offer. The teams had bought some eye-catching pieces, including an ash bench, a 1950’s seesaw head modelled as a cockerel, some commemorative silver coins, two vintage wooden stepladders and a tiny carved wood model of a seated bear. More unusual lots included an assortment that contained tribal spears and a hockey stick, a curious rustic pottery jug modelled as a green owl and a rare Arcadian crestedware model of a nurse attending to a soldier. ‘We must remain tightlipped about how well the teams performed,’ says Lawrences’ managing director, Helen carless. ‘All will be revealed when the programme is shown on BBc2 later in the year. Suffice to say there were many joyful surprises and a few slight disappointments, but one item made almost twenty times its purchase price. Of course, it was a pleasure to welcome Phil and Fern

THIS MONTH I’m writing about anxiety and tension, as, for whatever reason, I have seen a marked increase in people really going through the emotional mill lately. As a lot of people are disinclined to go down the prescribed anti-depressant, tranquiliser, sedative route, I will focus here on nutritional and herbal protocols used to support the nervous system and ease stress. I will say first though, that it is important to seek help when you need it, and a trip to your GP could provide you with a referral to get some much needed help in the way of counselling, cBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) or a support group. Valerian – A herbal sedative that can be used in low doses during the day to ease anxiety and tension or as a larger dose at night to promote sleep. A very popular herbal helper for times of stress, especially when arrant thoughts may be keeping you awake. The flower remedy white chestnut can also be very helpful for this, breaking the ‘loop’ of unwanted thoughts our minds seem to sometimes become stuck playing. Rhodiola – An adaptogenic, tonic herb. Useful for recovery from physical and mental stressors. Also thought to improve immunity, increase physical

Oats provide fibre, B vitamins and minerals, valuable for digestive and nerve health. Include them in your daily diet and also consider taking a tincture of oats, traditionally used to treat stress and anxiety. B Vitamins – Often recommended alongside other treatments. These important vitamins support the body in a variety of ways, B5 in particular has been nicknamed ‘the antistress’ vitamin for its effects on the adrenal gland. Magnesium is another useful supplement, especially where chronic muscle tension and cramping have become a problem. Other herbs to consider include vervain, lemon balm, skullcap, passionflower and hops - often included in tinctures and teas for anxiety, sleep disorders and restlessness. For panic attacks and palpitations consider hawthorn, motherwort and the amino acid theanine. Teas of the herbs already mentioned can be very helpful to drink throughout the day (replace caffeinated drinks and alcohol which deplete nutrients and can make us feel much more ‘edgy’). I would also recommend looking into meditation and breathing techniques as they can make a
big difference in helping us process our emotions healthily. And remember, there’s absolutely no shame or weakness in feeling anxious or depressed. There are numerous self help techniques, herbs, nutrients and therapies that can help you through, always ask for help. © Jenna Evans 2013

For you to receive the bike free of tax and NI, your company must offer the use of bikes to all its employees, but the same quality of bike does not have to be offered to every employee. And you may be surprised to know that delicious Chantenay carrots are now grown here in the UK. British grown Chantenay carrots are sweet, fresh and crunchy and lend themselves well to any meal or enjoyed alone as snack. Chantenay carrots are nutritional and protective powerhouses. They are rich in beta carotene which the body makes into vitamin A. This is important in strengthening the immune system, keeping the skin, lungs and intestines healthy, promoting cell growth and aiding good vision. The beta carotene which is converted into vitamin A also acts as an antioxidant. Antioxidants fight free radicals and therefore help to prevent degenerative diseases. An 80g portion supplies more than the RDA of vitamin A. There is some truth in the old
wives’ tale that carrots help you to see in the dark since night blindness is one symptom of vitamin A deficiency. During the Second World War, early radar stations were established along the south and east coasts of England to detect aggressors in the air or at sea. The Germans attributed this sudden, remarkable night vision to the British habit of eating carrots. They weren’t so far off the mark since the vitamin A in carrots forms retinol, a lack of which brings on night blindness. Chantenay Carrots provide 6% of the RDA of vitamin E and 8% of the RDA of folic acid. According to the Food Standards Agency, they are also a good source of fibre. Chantenay are rich in minerals such as calcium, potassium, copper, folic acid and magnesium and are said to have sweetening, antianaemic, healing, diuretic, remineralising and sedative properties. Carrots naturally produce phytochemicals and there is a growing amount of evidence to
suggest that they can help to protect against various types of cancer, heart disease and chronic degenerative diseases like cataracts and arthritis. Chantenay carrots provide one of the recommended 5 daily portions of fruit and vegetables and are also a high source of fibre.
Chicken and Chantenay Carrot Bang Bang Salad
This dish is Chinese in origin and gets its name from the banging sound of the mallet that is used to shred the chicken. It is an Asian street food dish. Serves 2 as a main course and 4 as a starter. Ingredients - for the dressing: 2 tbsp smooth or crunchy peanut butter 2 tbsp rapeseed or vegetable oil ½ tbsp toasted sesame oil 3 tbsp sweet chilli sauce

Juice of 1 lemon A good dash of light soy sauce Ingredients - for the salad: 100g dried vermicelli rice noodles, pre-soaked and drained ½ cucumber, cut into long shreds using a potato peeler 250g cooked chicken breast shredded (no skin) 2 spring onions, trimmed and cut into long shreds 150g sliced Chantenay carrot slices A handful of coriander, chopped Toasted sesame seeds to garnish (optional) Method 1. For the dressing; place all of the ingredients in a bowl and mix together, if the mixture is a little thick add a little warm water. Then place the bowl over a pan of boiling water until it warms to a spoon-able consistency. 2. For the salad; Poach the chicken in chicken stock for about 20 minutes until cooked through or use leftover chicken from a roast bird then place all of the ingredients into a bowl, pour the dressing over the salad and toss slightly to combine. 3. Place on serving plates and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds. Chicken and Chantenay Carrot Bang Bang Salad is also delicious served cold, and would make a great addition to a picnic if you are fortunate enough to have tickets for Wimbledon or The Ashes! LIKE SO MANY people we keep a few bottles of beer from a range of breweries across the country for those evenings when one just fancies a beer or two without venturing to the local pub in our glorious summer weather. What summer? Well at least the rain’s a little warmer. I was amazed to find out recently that there are over 1,800 bottled beers available in this country alone, to be marked by the release of a new book from the Campaign for Real Ale. Not having yet obtained a copy, and bearing in mind
CAMRA’s raison d’être I can only assume that all these are indeed ‘real’ or bottle-conditioned, to give them the more correct name. Surely this puts CAMRA in a bit of a quandary because, after all, they are always bombarding us with reasons why we should be visiting the pubs for our ales and not buying them from supermarkets. Conversely of course, by buying beers in bottles we are supporting breweries, many of which are small and doubtless their owners are happy to supply those outlets who order by the thousands. So how about the Baxter crew? Well, we like to spread our favours, although I have to admit it has been very tempting to not to go to the pubs on a Saturday night as frequently as we used to, particularly when the weather is poor and we have some excellent beers to hand, and NASCAR is on the haunted fishtank. Speaking of bottled beers leads me very nicely to a range of beers that I obtained on a recent visit to ‘The Trading Post’ - an interesting establishment situated not far off the South Petherton roundabout, on the old A303 heading West. One can’t miss it as it has an old railway coach in use as a café adjacent to the main building. (Personally, as it appears to be
eminently restorable, I would like to see it working on a Heritage railway; but that’s another story I guess). Anyway, I was lucky enough to pick up several beers from the Branscombe Vale Brewery, one of which I have not seen for some time – Branoc since The White Post at Rimpton had this on draught. We’re working our way through these, and one of particular note is their ‘Brewer’s Preferred’, a ‘full and
rich’ ale weighing in at a healthy 6% ABV. The brewery has in fact been around since 1992, so clearly has ‘come of age’ in more ways than one, and invested in a bottling plant in 2011. We look forward to sampling the others bought that day. The brewery concentrates on supplying quality independent outlets in this area, so ‘The Trading Post’ could well be a very good place to visit. beers, my reader will quite possibly have noted the leaning we have in this column toward the amazing beers coming out from the craft breweries of the United States. Being fortunate to have my Godson living in Atlanta, his parents foray to the far side of the pond means we get some class acts brought back, one of which lately was from the amazing Ommegang Brewery of Cooperstown New York, and named ‘Three Philosophers’. Served in a 750ml bottle (i.e. the size of a wine bottle) this is a quadruple ale in the Belgian style, which not only has their own unique ale but contains 2% of the Liefmans Kreik Cherry beer. Whilst not a fan by any means of the aforementioned, in these circumstances the hint of cherries is nothing short of fabulous, and it all weighs in at 9.7% ABV, which makes it clearly one to savour – and if one is very wise indeed; best shared. Well, life is a shared experience, n’est-ce pas? Closer to home but in the style of a Californian Pale Ale, we discovered ‘Dead Pony Club’ from Brewdog, which is brewed in Fraserburgh, Scotland, and whilst only 3.8% ABV, delivers exactly what it says on the tin – well, bottle, to be accurate. It’s actually worth buying for the legend on the label alone, for the writer is clearly not backward in coming forward in attacking the bland fizz turned out by so many pseudo-brewery/factories. Another American Pale Ale we found came from Rochester, New York, and at 5.3% ABV is worth seeking out. From where you may ask? A Supermarket near you, if you are lucky. Speaking of the American Market, of which the overwhelming majority is stitched up by Anheuser-Busch and MillerCoors (the latter having been combined to try to make some inroad into A-B’s market)
there has been a recent attack on a Micro Brewer in Wandsworth by those people at A-B. Why? Well, A-B own Belle Vue Kriek, and having named their brewery Belleville after their local primary school, this has been decreed that it is ‘too close’ to the name that AB own. I’m not kidding, this really is true! With one part-time employee and just £1000 in the bank, sadly Belleville doesn’t stand a chance to fight these bully boys. Indeed, this is just another example of how the big brewer can attack the small with impunity, and carry on limiting the choice that the consumer has. The letter from Bristol based solicitors Humphrey’s is quite incredible, demanding that they destroy all their packaging, branded items and promotional material bearing the microbrewery’s name and the removal of any references to Belleville on the company’s website within 28 days. What can we do as drinkers? Well, short of anyone with taste for decent beer and a little savvy giving these
types the big elbow, then there is very little. A suggestion that Belle Vue dog track should sue A-B is merely a sad joke, along with the suggestion that A-B might even sue the school and get them to change their name. Not very long ago A-B sued the American brewer Dog Fish Head (a beer mentioned in these columns for its magnificent stout) for some pathetic reason. Even pointing out that the latter had 0.002% of the market and wouldn’t make the tiniest of dents in their $39.8 Billion/£26 Billion turnover didn’t stop A-B from trying! As one web-site suggests, the way to register your disgust is to become a beer snob and reject the mass-produced fizzy stuff. Just because one is hood-winked into believing that it is ‘trendy’ to drink their products by expensive advertising, bear in mind that AB and MillerCoors spend about $1.5 billion each year getting the sheeple of this world to consume their products. Who pays for this you may ask? Go on; take a wild guess. Far better then to support

your local brewer - and pub too! What have we sampled in our pub visits of late? Amongst the usual beers I was surprised to see that classic ‘Pedigree’ from Marstons. I say classic, but clearly it has been messed around, with what I believe to be a lower gravity, and whilst it still has that sulphury nose to it, somehow it has become blander. Well that’s my opinion; what does everyone else think? So, with the summer skittle leagues and knock-outs under way, how is your team doing? We’ve been lucky enough to sample the delights of bat and trap - in between the storms, and great fun it was too. My thanks to the Bradford Abbas Sports and Social Club for the opportunity to play this great game. Never played? Check it out on the internet – you never know, your local pub may want to take it up, and I can assure everyone that you won’t regret it. THEY’RE OUT AND ABOUT AGAIN! The ‘wildlife’ that in every conceivable shape and form needs to eat or find a home. The definition pest is subjective as truly one man’s pest is another man’s pleasure. I do like to think that my garden is an attractive place for a wide range of life but some of them (mostly the rabbits) need thinking about! There are a lot of them about this year, more than ever, and already they have had the peas, the beans, the curly kale seedlings, and are
starting on the cosmos. I have fenced the most vulnerable areas of the garden and then use a product called Grazers which is watered on to the plants. It needs a couple of applications but the plant takes it up and then when bunny takes a bite it unsettles him (or her) to the extent that they leave it alone. It must contain some hallucinatory, mindaltering compound that works in bunny brains. It doesn’t do them any physical harm at all, just sends them away. Main problem is that they might keep sampling

Bank voles are similar to wood mice but have a long tail, reddish-brown fur, large bulging eyes and sticking out ears. Lovely creatures but they do help themselves more than they should and are really difficult to fence out. Fleece and net tunnels work as well as anything. Slugs not so bad this year and
the new wool pellet product, Slug Gone, is working well so far. Caterpillars I can live with as I am happy to see butterflies and moths but vine weevils are very definitely on the kill list. Nematode treatments are the most environmentally friendly method of control, but this needs to be well planned and followed through. Nematodes need moist soil to be able to travel through it to find their prey. Diseases are mostly rots and spots! Number one is potato

blight and this is predictable based on the weather. The Potato council has an excellent website that gives details of Smith periods which are the indicators of risk for potato blight. A full Smith Period consists of 2 consecutive days when the minimum air temperature was at least 10°C and the relative humidity has reached 90% or more for a minimum of 11 hours. If those conditions occur then the spores that cause potato blight will germinate on the leaf of the plant and start the infection. The only chemical treatment we have as gardeners, is a preventative copper spray which needs to go on before there is a problem. Always pick off and destroy infected leaves as soon as they are seen, and try to encourage good ventilation round the plant. Bear in mind potato blight will spread to tomatoes! Number two disease at this stage of the season is black spot on roses. It is worse when the leaf surface is wet overnight, and difficult to control once it has caught hold. Prevention is better than cure and that means removing infected material, making sure the soil is well cared for by feeding, and most importantly adding lots of well-
rotted organic matter, and keeping the rose open-pruned to allow good air movement. There are some good fungicides available which will help, but a healthy soil should be the starting point.

Fuchsia! Fuchsias are grown for their very attractive, usually hanging flowers that are carried, more or less continuously from summer to autumn. They are useful in summer-bedding schemes, containers, hanging baskets or in the ground. Some fuchsias are hardy enough to be used as hedges and in permanent plantings. Fuchsias were first spotted by European botanists at the end of the 17th century on the Caribbean island of Hispanola which is the current day Dominican Republic and Haiti, and occur naturally mostly in Central and South America. They

GARDENING were named after the renowned German botanist Leonhart Fuchs, who lived from 1500 to 1566. So, there you go! All fuchsias have the same general routine care preferring a fertile, moist but well-drained soil, with shelter from cold, drying winds. In containers, a mix of 1 part loam-based potting compost (John Innes No 3) to 3 parts peatfree multipurpose compost works well. Fuchsia plants need to be kept moist but not waterlogged and should never be left standing in water. Give them some shade in the hottest part of the day to get the best results. Some fuchsias are hardier than others and are usually dealt with separately. Half-hardy fuchsias need to be overwintered in frostfree conditions. Trailing types are ideal for hanging baskets (where they may need to be watered daily); and upright fuchsias are a good choice for container cultivation. In both cases, plants benefit from a balanced, liquid fertiliser in late summer. Hardy fuchsias can be grown as border plants with the base of the stem planted 5cm (2in) below the soil surface. Protect the crown of hardy fuchsias in autumn with a mulch of compost, bark or straw. Take cuttings (see below) of hardy fuchsia in early autumn as insurance against frost damage. Apply a dressing of general fertiliser in spring and again in summer to get them going again.

In the grow-your-own garden, things have not all been plain sailing but salads are cropping and early peas are picking now. Beans have been really slow to get going with repeated germination failures because of the cold and poor light levels. Courgettes are a bit behind but will soon catch up. With any garden crop, regular picking and start feeding at the right time not when the plants are looking sick or have stopped performing! The other good move is to sow fresh crops – a little but often works well. A short row of salad leaves every couple of weeks will give a continuous supply of tasty fresh green goodness. There’s still time to sow spring onions, radishes, Swiss chard, spinach, late carrots, spring cabbages and cauliflowers to overwinter. Summer pruning and thinning can be helpful if you want to grow larger flowers or fruits. In a good blossom year when almost every flower sets a fruit, the plant can’t possibly support all of them and a bit of strategic thinning taking out the weaker fruits will give the others the chance to really develop. In the fruit garden, bush fruit need picking, and tree fruits may need thinning or at least some summer pruning to make sure the crop gets a good chance to develop to a good size. Young
trees will benefit from watering. Weeds grow all year round but never more so than when you are away on holiday! Hoeing is the safest and most environmentally friendly way of controlling them but has to be done frequently and in dry conditions. GARDENING not then the glass should be shaded with white shading paint or green netting. Many houseplants enjoy a summer holiday outside and especially like a shower of rain which can really freshen them up. Make sure they also get a feed to support new growth. Tubs and baskets need regular care to be at their best. Deadheading, watering and feeding are all vital. Repeat flowering herbaceous perennials also benefit from dead-heading and a feed. Warm sunny weather encourages blanket weed and algae on ponds. You will need to
remove the muck from the pond and keep it topped up. Lawns are best not cut too close in dry weather, and if you do remove the clippings then be sure to give a quick acting summer feed, especially if a spring treatment was not given. Evergreens can be trimmed, especially topiaried plants such as box. Keep wall shrubs and climbers tied in and prune off the growth that is obviously heading in the wrong direction.

YOU MIGHT recall that in last month’s column I slated the Western Gazette for including in its property supplement on 2nd May a half-page feature on solar panels that informed readers that ‘The government’s Renewable Heat Incentive is expected to come into force during 2011’ and ‘the details are not yet available’. Scarcely had my comment that ‘five months into 2013 and nobody bothered to read and update the copy before going to print’ than the 30th May issue of the Gazette

dropped on my doormat. And there on page 19 of the property supplement was the same old feature, still unamended, still incorrect, still evidence of the paper’s slipshod ways. It boasts on the front page that it was ‘Weekly Paid-for Newspaper of the Year’ in the 2012 media awards. It makes me wonder how dire the others were. Because the carelessness is not only hidden away in the property supplement but also blazoned across the front page. The 30th May issue of my local edition, now purportedly serving Gillingham as well as Wincanton, Bruton and Castle Cary, carried a front-page banner screaming ‘FREE MEAL when you buy another at the Old Ship Inn, Castle Cary – see pages 34-35’. It will not surprise you to know that we at The Visitor know Castle Cary very well indeed, and we know that the town has no Old Ship Inn. So we turned to page 34 to discover that a ‘buy one meal get one meal free’ offer, unpunctuated, was available at the Old Ship Inn in Mere – in Wiltshire, a dozen or more miles from Castle Cary. But that wasn’t the end of it. A week later a front-page banner of the same size and in the same position on the front page of the 6th June issue stated ‘FREE cake at Angels Corner in Wincanton – see page 34’. I know there’s an
Angel Lane in Wincanton but I couldn’t recall seeing an Angels Corner, so I dutifully turned to page 34 only to discover no mention anywhere of this offer. I eventually found it on page 40. ‘Free slice of cake with every tea or coffee purchased’ was on offer at the Angel Corner Tea Rooms in Mere, now a mere five miles away. Also in the 6th June issue was a page devoted to the Taste of Somerset Awards 2013, in which we were told that one of the categories is being sponsored by Longman Cheese Sales Ltd which ‘specialises in farmhouse cheese, butter and cream at its North Cadbury dairy’. Sadly the accompanying photograph splashed across the top of the page was captioned as showing ‘Workers at Longman Cheese Sales Ltd of North Brewham with produce from the family firm’s specialist dairy’. North Brewham or North Cadbury? Your guess is as good as mine, but as only around eight miles separate them, perhaps the Gazette thinks it doesn’t much matter. Way back in last December’s column I mentioned the Gazette’s occasional ‘Meet your local chef’ feature comprising a photograph and brief biography of the chef
plus his or her recommended recipe and, of course, a plug for the pub or restaurant which is presumably paying for its halfpage or more of ‘advertorial’. In the 16th May issue we ‘met’ Elumalai Mohanraj from the Signature Viceroy Indian Restaurant in Yeovil, resplendent in his high white chef’s hat, and Lesley Waters who has recently opened her Kitchen Café in Yeovil and whose familiar face from the television smiled down from the top of the column. And Daniel Maudsley, the new head chef at Haselbury Mill. The headline invited us to ‘Meet Daniel Maudsley’ but instead of his portrait the accompanying photo showed what I assume are the grounds of the Mill – but not having been there I can’t be sure, and there was no caption to help me. Maybe the absence of Mr Maudsley’s mugshot was not the fault of the newspaper but of the advertiser who failed to supply one. Advertisers have been known to do some strange things – like the auctioneer who used the 4th May issue of the Western Daily Press, pictured below, to attract readers to an auction on 17th April!
