A
serious apartment fire in central Torrevieja prompted the evacuation of a multi-storey residential building on Friday night, sending flames and thick smoke into the sky and causing significant damage to several homes. The blaze broke out at around 8.00pm in a property on the corner of Ramon Gallud and Calle Maria Parodi, above a row of commercial premises. Emergency services were alerted shortly afterwards, with firefighters arriving on scene at approximately 8.10pm and working for nearly two hours to bring the fire under control. The fire is believed to have started on the third floor of the building, reportedly caused by a portable heating device. A man inside the apartment at the time managed to escape unaided.
