hile the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, and the Councillor for Education, Begoña Cuartero, were entertaining schoolchildren from 4 Orihuela schools, on a day celebrating ‘The Rights of a Child’, in the warmth and comfort of the City Council Chambers last Wednesday, over 400 children were being turned away from their classrooms on the Orihuela Costa at the CEIP Infant and Junior school because of flooding in the classrooms. Once again it fell to the schoolteachers and members of the Policia Locale to inform the parents that heavy rains had rendered the school building dangerous and unfit for habitation. Rainwater was seen to be pouring in through the ceilings

and the windows and it was also flooding up through some of the floors. Electricity power points, many at ground level, had water running through them, and as one parent said to the Leader ‘Heaven knows the damage or injuries that could have been caused had the children been allowed to enter school’. The school, situated in Los Dolses, is a series of prefabricated cabins, many of which are joined together to form larger classrooms. They were first erected in 2002, fourteen years ago, as a temporary

measure, but for many years they have been desperately in need of refurbishment and repair. Only two years ago one of the cabin ceilings fell into the centre onto a class of four year olds. Fortunately there were no injuries but the situation has not improved. With the children again turned away from the school on Wednesday, not only did they lose another day of their education but many parents also

had to miss a day’s work and stay at home. ‘The lack of respect being shown to children on the coast by the current Orihuela Council is appalling’, said one mother. ‘Instead of sitting in their council chambers the mayor and the councillor should have been on the Orihuela Costa last Wednesday seeing the appalling conditions that our children are having to endure’.

Ten years of saving lives in the community

There have been about 13,000 births carried out in the hospital

ongratulations to the University Hospital of Torrevieja and its staff which celebrated its tenth anniversary last Monday in which time it has firmly established as one of the leading medical facilities in the Province. Manager of the Torrevieja Health Department of Torrevieja, Dr. JosĂŠ Antonio Velasco, highlighted the degree of maturity that the hospital has acquired over these years as a result of the efforts of a thoroughly professional team of doctors, nurses and administrators. "It is a pleasure for me to have been part of this team from the very beginning and to see at first hand the strides and the achievements they have made," he added. One of the main objectives of the Directorate is the early resolution of health problems. Currently, according to data provided by the Conselleria itself, at Torrevieja Hospital, the average waiting list for surgery is 32 days, compared to 127 days in the remainder of the Valencian Community. "It is everyone's responsibility to provide quality care," explained Jose David Zafrilla, the Assistant Managing Director, who confirmed that the commitment for 2016 was to maintain an average sur-

gical delay of below 35 days and an average waiting time for consultation not exceeding 25 days. Amongst the activity recorded, there have been more than 167,000 operations performed with a CMA rate (surgery that does not require admission) of 70%. Almost 3 million appointments have been registered in the hospital and there have been almost 2 million procedures carried out by A&E with an average waiting time of 35 minutes. On a happier note there have also been about 13,000 births carried out in the hospital. As part of the tenth anniversary celebrations the Hospital of Torrevieja hosted a week of tributes to patients, local groups and associations and medical professionals. Amongst the many organisations honoured at the event were the AECC, Charity for Charities and the Jehovah's Witness Christian Community, as well as the family of Dr. Garcia Gea who originally named the centre. The hospital is currently working on its International Joint Commission (JCI) Accreditation, which was introduced in the United States in 1951 as a model of good practices in hospitals. If it succeeds, it will be the first hospital in the Region of Valencia to achieve this.

Almoradí Police refuse to undergo firearms training

L

ocal police officers in Almoradí have refused to carry out shooting practice because the chief of police had failed to obtain the relevant authorisation from the Civil Guard's Arms Firearms Department. Police sources say that José Antonio Segura, failed to take the steps to obtain the necessary permits that are mandatory when moving weapons to the firing range from the Almoradi Police HQ.

Torrevieja council asks residents to select beach for dogs

T

he Torrevieja council has reached an agreement with the opposition which will allow them to unblock the modification of the city ordinance so that members of the public can be given the opportunity to decide on the that will be allocated for the use of pets. They say that the beach will be selected and opened as a dog beach prior to the 2017 Easter holiday. The six proposals are: Cala Ferrís, Cala de los Carabineros, Cala Piteras, Cala del Moro in Cabo Cervera, Cala de los Trabajos, Playa de La Mata Pueblo, and Punta Margalla. The method by which residents may cast their votes will be announced in

the coming days. The Councillor for Beaches, Javier Manzanares (PSOE, said that all six options have been closely looked at by council staff and they are thought to be the most appropriate in the area. They also add that of all the locations they have studied, the one that clearly has the greatest support is Cala Ferrís because it is already used routinely for dog walks, it is away from residential areas and it has restricted access to pedestrians. The councillor said that the council will be setting up a web page which will contain all the necessary information including the whereabouts of the battot boxes that will be used to collect the votes.

It would appear that a number of agents have also denounced their boss saying that he has apparently failed to obtain the authorisation for at least a decade despite the legal requirement and the need for officers to carry out two firearms practices every year. In July this year they celebrated the 3rd anniversary of the bar and decided to use this event to raise some more funds . From the raffle and burgers they raised an amazing €409 but then out came the charity buckets which raised another €105 which Billy & Jane matched with another €105 and on top of that the staff donated their tips for the day €45 and finally the ladies from The Slimming

Vivace Classical Choir’s 10th Anniversary Concert “The Armed Man” by Sir Karl Jenkins Members of Vivace Classical Choir are now in the final stages of preparation for this, their 10th anniversary concert. Friends of the choir are coming from all over the United Kingdom to join with them to present “The Armed Man” – A Mass for Peace. The wonderful music of composer Sir Karl Jenkins will be further enriched by the addition of instrumentalists from the Symphonic Band of the Union Musical of San Miguel de Salinas who will be joining regular piano accompanist David Ward Campbell. Vivace Musical Director Tom Pargeter plays trombone in the Band and is delighted that this link is being made with these talented local musicians. Written for the millennium, and dedicated to the victims of the war then going on in Kosovo, this enthralling , modern work is a Mass for Universal Peace. In fact, it is a dramatic representation of the preparations , actions, consequences and recovery stages of any war, and sadly is as relevant today as it was then. Musical Director Tom has been with the choir since its inception, and over the years has led them through works as diverse as Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, and Carmina Burana. He is sure that this inspiring work is a fitting climax to the choir’s special year. The first performance will be on Friday 2nd December at 8.00pm in the Casa de Cultura in San Miguel. It will be followed by a special charity performance on Saturday 3rd December at 8.30pm in the wonderful Church of Santas Justa and Rufina in Orihuela. Tapas Route on the Orihuela Costa The Orihuela Costa Tapas Route got off to a brisk Start on Saturday evening although of the six establishment s that I visited, two, the Restaurante Casa Carmelina and the Bierhaus Paulaner, said that they had no knowledge of the competition, while Casa Manolo in La Zenia told us we were too late as they only served between 12noon and 4pm. They did, however, have some they had prepared earlier, which they let us have, and I will say that their green pepper on a chicken slice with tartar salsa tasted very good indeed. But my favourite was the selection of four provided by The Tavern Bar in Villamartin Plaza, Fresh salmon, prawns, sliced savoury beef or medallions of pork. I rather greedily sampled three of the four and left a very happy man. The competition continues through to Wednesday evening so why not go along and try for yourselves.. Callosa police shortage denounced on night shift olice Officers in Callosa de Segura have said that the town is suffering from a critical shortage of officers covering the night patrols which they ascribe to poor organisation and management within the force.

He also warns that the matter should be resolved quickly because, with the approach of the holiday season, there will almost certainly be an upsurge in crime which the force would currently be able to handle.

They say that as a result there has been an increase in robberies in the area while the arrest rate is down by 80%. The officers quote the example of a vehicle recently stolen from the council’s maintenance yard which they say occurred as a direct result of the reduction in the number of officers carrying out the night shift.

he Orihuela Costa and District Branch held it’s Annual General Meeting on Thursday evening attended by the Chairman of District North Nigel Hails. Long serving Chairman Keith Carter stood down along with committee members Peter and Pauline Breen, Pam Armatage and Sheila Asbury. They were replaced by Kevin Reardon, who is serving his second term in the chair, along with Anne Faulkner, Sandie Coates, Jean Heald, Malcolm Cavendish and Shirley Johnson while members Eddie Coleman, Tony Blackband and Dave Cottom

continue in their current roles. Pastor Keith Brown remains as Branch President. With the Poppy Appeal behind us for another year the branch, having raised over 35,500 euros in 2015, is currently finalising it’s totals for 2016. Poppy Appeal Coordinator Eddie Coleman said it has been another bumper year. The branch meets on the 3rd Thursday of every month at the Olympia Restaurant in Mil Palmeras. Meetings get underway at 7.30 pm. Everybody welcome whether they have served in the military or not. Come along on 15 December to our informal Christmas carol sing a long and share a mince pie.

The Vega Baja Garden Club’s meeting earlier in December was crowned by a presentation given by Anna Gevers and Jacqui Ford about Jacqui’s garden in Torrevieja.

There were lots and lots of interesting photos showing how Jacqui and her partner, David, have turned a bare plot into a beautiful garden in the space of 8 Years. It wasn’t at all easy but it is now a little bit of paradise, with an array of beautiful scented climbers and many interesting features. They have shown what is possible, with the poorest of soil and some very difficult conditions (neighbour’s high hedges and walls for example). The photo shows Jacqui and her friends relaxing in

her garden, enjoying the fruits of her labours!

Our Christmas meeting which will be held on Monday 5th December at Bar Trasgu’s in Formentera del Segura. Members have been asked to bring along some traditional Christmas nibbles for our party. We will also have a garden related quiz. Most of our members have small terraces and balconies, so you have to own a huge plot to come along and enjoy our meetings – the emphasis is very much on the love of plants and gardens. Firefighters ban overtime in protest

F

irefighters from Almoradí, Orihuela and Torrevieja have said on Monday that they will refuse to carry out any overtime until 1st December The protest is as a result of the precarious position they insist the force is in saying that they are currently working with a shortfall of a hundred officers. In the Vega Baja the measure will affect the fire stations in Orihuela, Torrevieja and Almoradi for at least ten days and they say that they cannot rule out extending the ban should the Provincial Fire Department not come up with a solution to the problems they have reported. During recent industrial action which took place from 7 to 11 November the Personnel Board had to close Almoradi on several occasions due to lack of staff. In Orihuela the station operated for at least five days with all of it’s officers aged over 50 years and the service’s mountain rescue team would have been able to effect a rescue even though it had the allocation of a helicopter.

European countries. There is simply far too much uncertainty and volatility at the present time to commit to such a large currency exchange, although this view is contradicted in Spain where there is something of a mini building boom once again in the Costas.

As for expats already living in Europe, the future remains uncertain, and will continue to be in the months ahead. I am reliably informed by several of the larger removal companies who spend much of their time moving Brits to and from Spain and France, that the rate of movement is slower that they first anticipated following the Brexit vote. This may not come as a surprise to some, since many expats over retirement age could not afford to return to the UK anyway, given the weak pound. Unless retired expats have substantial financial resources, as well as the foresight to retain a property in the UK during their time as expats, housing will be a major and near impossible issue for the returning expat to resolve, particularly since retirement and sheltered housing are in short supply in most regions. In addition, there are complications concerning the resumption of health care in the UK, and particularly after expats have experienced rather better care in Spain, France and many other European countries that they will receive from an overstretched health service in the UK.

Keep Calm and Carry on I received an email from an expat living in Spain’s Costa del Sol last week, who was understandably concerned and angry about the falling pound. Basically, he was asking what the UK Government was going to do about it. Apparently, both he and his wife are now having to seriously cut back on both food and entertainment in an effort to save the 300 pounds that they have lost each month due to the fall in the poundeuro exchange rate following Brexit. On the basis that the pound had fallen in the region of fifteen per cent of its value, at the time of writing, my correspondent must be receiving in excess of 2000 pounds each month to suffer this size of reduction in his income. Although the falling pound is not good news for any expat, I know of many who live on a fraction of that size of income during their retirement years. I am not going to weep too many tears for my correspondent, and merely suggest that he immediately implements a few economy measures. A drop of this size in income and pensions received from the UK is a serious matter, but many expats tend to overlook the many good years when the strong pound meant being able to live in comparative luxury in Spain, when compared to life in the UK. As in most things in life, there are winners at the expense of losers, and this is a time for readjusting the balance. I am often told that near exchange rate parity occurred before and certainly during the time of the world economic crisis. It did, and then again, it did not, since the parity exchange rate only applied if you were foolish enough to exchange pounds for euros at some of the rip off currency exchange shops in UK airports. Most expats that I know, as well as tourists, would never consider doing

At the time of writing, if you only achieve parity when exchanging pounds for euros, then you clearly haven't done your homework. Nothing is forever, and all good things have to come to an end sometime. I will no doubt be called a pessimist for my views on Brexit, but I suspect that we are only now catching a glimpse of that rather nasty iceberg that the UK appears to be heading towards, unless more astute minds in the UK Government’s current negotiating team intervene with a hefty dose of realism, common sense and a healthy dose of humility. Will this have any effect upon both intending, as well as already settled expats? There is already plenty of evidence to suggest that many intending expats are putting their plans on hold, particularly if they are intending to purchase a property in Spain, France, Portugal or other

A number of expats that I have spoken to, who have returned to the UK from warmer countries, have told me of serious health issues that they have experienced since returning to a damper and cooler UK climate. The body takes time to adjust to such changes and, quite simply, many older expats simply do not have sufficient time left or the physical ability to cope with such massive adjustments. During the post Brexit period, despite the many concerns and anxieties, the only sensible thing for many expats to do is to obey that famous instruction on that well known wartime poster, which is simply ‘To Keep Calm, and to Carry On’! CARP R US CLUB NEWS The 24th of November saw the start of the Winter series of matches. Round one was fished on a muddy River Segura in Murcia town centre. Winner on the day was Dave Hoare with 6.28kg, second was Doug Hornblow with 4.78kg, in third place Roy Buttress with 2.98 and in fourth spot Steve Fell with 2.42kg. Round two will be fished on the Eden Canal section of the River Segura in Guardamar on the 1st of December - pegs at 8.00am and the fishing will be from 9.00 till 2.00pm. The high numbers will be used for this match. The next Club meeting will be on Sunday the 4th of

December. It is to be a special meeting to discuss what is happening with the freshwater fishing in Spain and what direction the Club is to take in the future. The “CHRISTMAS� Quiz will be at the Club house on Wednesday afternoon at 4pm and finishing by 6.30 on the 7th of Dec. The Cost is 1 Euro per person and teams to a max of 6 are allowed to partake in this themed Xmas Quiz. tudio32’s production of “A Christmas Carol” is on November 30th to December 3rd, so be sure to snap up the last remaining seats for this Christmas extravaganza. And if you want to get involved with this friendly, talented group then why not come along to their Open Day on Wednesday December 7th, 4pm at Casa Ventura, San Luis. The company’s next production, “Mack and Mabel”, will be performed in May / June next year and auditions will take place on January 11th and 15th. The Open Day will give people an opportunity to meet the director, musical director, members of the company and production team, and find out about the show, auditions, and what’s on offer. Studio32 are always keen to recruit and develop new people, and have a good track record of developing talented individuals with in-house training. If you would like to become involved but don’t want to act, sing or dance then why not consider working backstage or helping in one of many production jobs that need to be done to produce the big musicals that the company stage. tagestruck Theatre Group recently performed their version of 'Aladdin and the Magic Lamp' at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre from the 17th to the 18th November.

The feedback from the audience was extremely positive with comments such as 'I didn't laugh... I cried with laughter throughout'.

Stagestruck pride themselves on their ability to deliver comedy performances but the cast of 25 also delivered believable characters and an eclectic selection of songs from typical pantomime to a beautifully sung version of 'Bring him home'. Leigh Humphries, the director said "every single cast member played their part perfectly and as a team, they created a magical evening of entertainment". 40 people, back stage, front of house and cast, came together to produce a memorable show and as a result were able to raise enough money to make charitable donations of 4000 euros, 3000 euros to the Torrevieja Alzheimer's Association and 1000 euros to other local charities. Stagestruck's next production will be presented in May 2017 and will have an 'Up Pompei' type theme, so make sure you book when tickets are available. The Saturns took on Vistabella Eagles at home but slipped to a 10-4 with the aggregate being 101-89 Tuesday the Outlaws travelled to Horadada Royals for the rearranged game and got beaten 10-2 with an aggregate of 57-132 The rearranged Winter League verses Bonalba was played on Thursday and the outcome was a great 10-2 win for EIand aggregate being 94-63. The Berleen also won 19-17, that keeps them pushing at the top of league Friday took the Cavaliers to Monte Mar to play the Matadors and they came away with an excellent 10-4 win taking the aggregate by 97-93. The Apollos triumphed over Greenlands Sycamores by 144-62 gaining 10 points to their opponents 4 whilst the Pioneers completed 14 points to nil victory over El Rancho Broncos by 160 shots to 72. Highlight in both matches went to the players on Rink 5 with Dawn & John Taylor winning 38-3 for the Apollos and Janet Charman,Val Dalton and John Porter winning 40-7 for the Pioneers. La Marina Report by Barry Latham The Explorers discovered where Vistabella Drivers played but unfortunately didn’t find the green to their liking and lost 12-2. Mike Stone, Arthur Cronk and Barbara Forshaw did manage the green well enough to win their game by 9 shots. All the other rinks had fairly close games so well done. Certainly a very unusual match took place on Monday in the Discovery League when the Pathfinders were supposed to play Country Bowls in the morning or was it in the afternoon? The Pathfinders only played with 4 rinks and lost 12-2. Our saving grace was John Rae, Martin Butler and Jean Tregoing winning 21-19. The weather played a big part in the Winter League match. At 10.00 am and the green was flooded. Some brave fellows fought the rain and did a Moses by parting the waters and soon the rain had stopped and the waters cleared. La Marina excelled themselves and had a good result against a strong San Luis team. We won three rinks to two but SL got the overall shots. Shirley Hadaway, Dave Taylor, Margaret Sadler and Janet

Parsons won so did Barry and Wendy Latham, Peter Parsons and Kathy Manning. Guess who the other one was? Yes, Barry Sadler with his brilliant partners, John Rae, Carol Smith and Mo Taylor. Berleen had a close game just losing by 4 shots. The Sharks took on the Vistabella Lanzdores winning 10-4. Dave Hadaway, Tom Spencer and Hilary Cronk won so did Dave Lewis, Jim Manning and Margaret McLaughlin. Not to be out done Roy Hart, Peter Parsons and Andy Bartlett also came out ahead while Alan Castle, Phil Pape and Janet Parsons had the highest winning rink 29-8.Oh dear!! Seagulls went to La Manga and had the wings well and truly clipped. Lost on every rink. Unfortunately the ladies in particular found the grass very heavy and some of the men found the same. I was brilliant, of course!!!! The Dolphins came up against La Siesta Blues and came away feeling very blue losing 11-3. John Withers gave us two points with Mike Smith and Shirley Withers giving a helping hand. The other point was from Cliff Rawlinson, Angela Butler and Jeff Halfhide.

But the Pintos played well against a strong team and took 4 rinks and the overall shots. Meanwhile The Broncos were away to La Siesta Pioneers, which can be a little tricky, but we are learning and gathering strength with every match and it is just a game and fun. However we came away without a point, but shouldn’t read too much into that, sometimes you are just playing a stronger team. Friday found The Raiders playing at Vistabella against The Conquistadores and although they came away without a point, they played well and were up against a tough team. The committee try to ensure that all bars get competition match fixtures throughout the season and wherever possible, the players in the competitions are neutral to that venue to avoid unfair advantages. Men’s and Ladies Pairs Competitions, Thursday 1st December. Next week is the pairs competitions first round so why not come along and support your team mates who all compete at neutral venues. There will be 10 Men’s pairs at the Hen’s Teeth and 9 Men’s pairs at the Sporting Life. The 12 Ladies pairs will be playing at the Tavern and Porter House. The Ladies Pairs is a new competition this year as there are a lot more ladies in the league. Unfortunately, the competition dates have clashed with prior engagements and a few of the big names are missing - Roofrack & Sanderson, Cooper & Chesworth, Kirby & Lane so it’s a very open competition. artin and Hugo returned from injury against high riding Almazora replacing Lewis and Dani Salazar as Torry searched for the points that would lift them out of the bottom four. Not for the first time this season, the referee was unhappy with the colour of Buba’s shirt, resulting in a 7 minute delay to the game but when it did get underway the home side were by far the quicker out of the blocks. As the Torry defence was in disarray they were fortunate not to fall behind as early as the 5th minute when a fierce shot from Rai rattled against the crossbar before bouncing away to safety. However the visitors gradually played themselves into the game with big Hugo forcing his way through the Almazora defence on 11 minutes only to see his delicate lob beat the keeper but unfortunately bounce off the top of the bar. Next to come close for Torry was Pastor but his effort from a tight angle was fractionally off target. With the exchanges fairly event and opportunities falling to both sides it was the hosts who opened the scoring on 34 minutes.

Although there was more than a hint of offside as Nico received the ball the goal was allowed to stand despite the protests from the Torry bench. Torrential rain was making it difficult for both sides but the visitors were handling the downpour better and only 6 minutes after they had gone behind the visitors were back on level terms when Damian drove the ball low into the corner of the net. But with the interval approaching there were more goal still to come and after Pastor was brought down in the box Hugo made no mistake from the spot putting Torry in front. Once again the home side were quicker out of the blocks at the start of the 2nd period forcing 2 corners in quick succession but it was Torry who almost extended their lead after a great assist by Pastor to Mateus who lost his footing when any sort of contact would have extended the visitors lead. Although the rain had eased the players were still finding the surface difficult to play so it was hardly surprising that Torry sat back as the home side did the pressing. Unfortunately it was a tactic that failed to pay off as in the final minutes of the game Calzado brought down Javier in a crowded area. Although Buba got close, the shot from Cervantes squirmed under his legs to level the scoreline, in a match from which both sides probably deserved a share of the spoils. Next Sunday Torry are at home to CF Recambios Colón who sit just 4 points above them in the table. THE BLARNEYSTONE POPPY DAY APPEAL 28 players including a few new members travelled to Riquelme to compete in a pairs better ball competition. The course was in excellent condition with very testing greens. We had the best weather of the week with everyone enjoying the day out regardless of scores. There was disappointment that the healthy twos pot rolled over from President´s day was not won with tales of near misses to rival any fisherman.

As always we returned to the Blarneystone for the presentation where we were well looked after by Eamon, Gill and staff. Rockets Golf Society Today we went to Roda Golf which is a first time for Rockets Golf Society. Forecast for heavy rain, when we arrived ,bright sunshine. That what I call Spanish forecasting. Course in good condition and some better than average scoring. Top score of the day came from Ron Swift with 34 points to seal victory as Player of the year. He was neck and neck with Arthur Williams who came in short with 31 points. El Plantio2 Golf Society Despite dire predictions, ideal weather greeted 18 members arriving to compete in a 'Medalford' on the 22nd November. This format takes in the dreaded 'Medal' for the 1st 9 holes where a promising round can be ruined by one disastrous shot. The net shots taken are then deducted by the Stableford score from the 2nd 9 holes. Unusually, the conditions did not produce the usual single figure return as in previous such competitions. Nearest the pins : Hole 4 - Lawrence Wanty, Hole 9 Ian Craig. 3rd - Hcap 12, Gordon Wayne, Net 13 Shots. 2nd - Hcap 9, Ray Housley - Net 11 Shots. 1st - Hcap14, Stewart Paterson - Net 10 Shots. If anyone would like to join our Society, we play at El Plantio Golf Club on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday. We use both courses - the Par 3 nine hole course and the main 18 hole course, so we cater for all abilities. The membership rates are very competitive, so call for more details.
