ORIHUELA COSTA TAPAS ROUTE ATTRACTS 16 ENTRIES ne aspect of Spanish cuisine that is extremely popular around the world is the custom of eating tapas and although this culinary tradition is replicated in bars and restaurants across the globe, certainly in competition form, it has taken until now to reach the Orihuela Costa. According to legend, King Alfonso 10th, the Wise King of Spain, had once been stricken with a serious illness which only allowed him to take in small portions of food with small amounts of wine. He enjoyed the experience so much that, after recovering from his illness, the king issued a decree that no wine should be served at inns unless it was served with food. As

such, tapas are seldom served without alcohol. They are not meant to be a meal in themselves but more a

snack between meals, small plates of food - from nuts, olives, and assorted cheeses to roasted meats and stews, that

t 6 pm on Sunday November 13 a special Remembrance Sunday Service was held in Campoverde Church and Garden. As a church and as a village we take Remembrance Sunday very seriously as it gives us the opportunity to remember those service men and women who have given their lives for our freedom and democracy. The whole village was invited to come and join in this Act of Remembrance and a special invitation was extended to all those current and ex service men and women in Campoverde to come and wear their medals. Others were invited to bring photos of family members who have served or are currently serving in the armed forces, to be displayed in the church and blessed by our Priest. Over 50 people attended, with many displaying their medals and all with stories to tell. Fittingly, Poppy the dog attended with her master who brought along pictures of his grandfather who had fought and died in World War One. The service started with the Act of Remembrance in the church garden, the playing of the Last Post and the laying of a Poppy Wreath under the cross. This was followed by a Service of Holy Communion in the church led by Father Richard and Father Robert. The photo shows some of the ex-service men and women who attended. New Leader for C.L.A.R.O C.L.A.R.O. held its 11th Annual General Meeting in the Asturias Restaurant on 18 November against the background of uncertainties resulting from the Brexit referendum. A hard Brexit which endangered access to free public health care and pension levels would have severe consequences for British citizens individually and since British residents in Orihuela Costa account for nearly 50% of the resident population, if large numbers were to leave Spain and return to the UK, the consequences for the local economy would be very serious. In the interests of preserving these rights, CLARO urged all British citizens living in Orihuela Costa to make sure they have “residencia” status and are registered on the local municipal register (padron). The Annual General Meeting considered a Report on the activities of the past year with notable successes including the firm commitment to complete construction within the next 2 years of the long delayed Orihuela Costa Emergency Services Centre with a 24/7 local police station, the sealing of the burning waste tip in Campoamor which no longer emits toxic fumes and the increase in the number of polling stations from 3 to 7 which will greatly facilitate the exercise of the right to vote at the next municipal elections in May, 2019, at

which time British residents will still have the right to vote. C.L.A.R.O.’s aim is to continue to fulfil its role as the only political party dedicated to promoting and defending the rights of residents of Orihuela Costa as the minority Popular Party government continues to deny Orihuela Costa adequate services and investments despite receiving some 60% of its revenue from the coast. Two specific priorities are a purpose built Cultural Centre including an auditorium for at least 500 people and rooms for the many local groups and the scandalously delayed pedestrian footbridge over the AP-7 motorway between Lomas de Cabo Roig and Cabo Roig where residents risk their lives daily by dodging traffic. Other priorities will not be ignored by C.L.A.R.O. including its campaign to Save Cala Mosca, the last green area on the Orihuela Costa sea front. The Annual General Meeting also renewed the present members of the Executive for a further year, the only change being that Paul Piccio stands down after a successful year as President to be succeeded by Karl Rainer Failoni, a long standing member of the Executive Committee, of Austrian nationality with fluent English as well as his native German and knowledge of Spanish.

Four children arrested for cyberbullying in school Agent Marta Garcia with Inspector Berta Sevillano and Commissioner Alberto Rubio

our children, 3 boys and a girl all aged 14, were arrested in Alicante for allegedly bullying a classmate via social networks and with their mobile phones. According to the National Police the life of the young girl was a living hell as she was subjected to all sorts of humiliation and insults, both face to face and in the presence of other children. They even created a false profile of her which they spread amongst her colleagues, piling on her even further misery. Initially the girl maintained her silence but little by little, as her despair increased, she found that she could take no more as she suffered a breakdown in school. Her situation was quickly uncovered as she divulged everything that she had been enduring for months. Her parents reacted immediately and quickly changed her school so that their daughter could regain some sort of normalcy. But even then the alleged harassers continued their practices. The parents then denounced the culprits to the National Police, whose specialists from the Provincial Police Brigade opened an investigation into the case. Investigations led to the identification of those

responsible for bullying with, according to police sources, all four accused arrested during the middle of last month. They were immediately made available to the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office where both disciplinary and re-education measures are presently being discussed. A spokeswoman for the Alicante Provincial Police, Marta Garcia, said, "These kinds of situations cannot be allowed in a civilised society. Not a single child should suffer from issues of bullying." García said that the bullying began last year "with humiliations and insults," but the victim did not say anything as she chose to suffer in silence. “The problem is that with new technologies the harassment lasts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and unless the victim complains to a parent or a friend we don’t know that it’s taking place" she said. The agent said that the Police have been working on a Plan for School Coexistence for five years, which includes talks to students about bullying and risks linked to the Mobile and Social Networks in which Minors are made aware that what they do on the internet can have serious consequences in daily life.

Although the planning and construction of new properties slowed down between the months of June and October the projection of future trends in the region continue to resist any major effects on the building industry.

RAFAL Film Festival packed with Spanish talent The fifth edition of the Rafal National Short Film Festival brought together hundreds of talented people last weekend, including personalities, actors and directors from across the whole of the Spanish film industry including actors Luis Mattola, Fele Pastor, the popular actress Lluvia Rojo and the Spanish director Luis Soravilla. Winner of the animated category was Mario Serrano with his short film '300,000 dollars' while in Non-fiction section the winners were David Echeverría and Felipe Garrido with 'Solos tú y yo'. In the short Provincial category the winner was Oscar Girón with the short 'The festival of the cinema'.

In total, 330 short films were presented at the festival, of which 50 were selected for special merit with 26 passing through to the final. Creation of the promotional poster was the local student Juan José Vera Martínez from the School of Art and Design in Alicante (EASDA). There were several other activities running parallel to the festival including a special screening of horror shorts on Halloween and a conference about animated films by Paco Sáez The festival was put together by the Rafal Council in conjunction with the Valencian Tourism Agency of the Generalitat Valenciana.

However figures released by the College of Technical Architects and Building Engineers of Alicante (CAATIEA) show that during the month of October surveyors made 26.2% fewer planning applications than in May, the month before the United Kingdom’s referendum on their EU exit. But not everything is blamed on BREXIT with the report also saying that the figures could be attributed to "uncertainty of the double elections and the lack of a Government in Spain, The housing developer Provia, meanwhile, say that potential UK buyers are putting property purchases on hold and delaying any decision until the outcome of BREXIT negotiations have either been completed or much further down the line. Bigastro PSOE denounce filthy cemetery

Bigastro Socialists issued a press release last week denouncing the filthy state and lack of maintenance in the town cemetery following the recent AllSaints Day commemorations. They say that the standards achieved by the municipal cleaning team are unacceptable despite the town hall appointing private contractors to take care of burials and exhumations, and thereby releasing municipal staff to focus on maintenance and on cleaning, The PSOE also criticised the lack of repairs around the site

saying that the council justification to appoint the private contractors had failed miserably. The avenues around the cemetery are dirty and the refuse con-

tainers and surrounding areas are full of dried flowers. They accuse the councillor responsible, Jose Manuel Maiquez, of shirking his duties.

Continued from Page One And so, at long last, The Orihuela Costa International Tapas Route has been born. Organised by the Councillor for Tourism, Sofía Álvarez, the event will take place over 5 days, between 26 and 30th November in 16 different restaurants and bars across the Orihuela Costa. A tapa will cost partakers 2.50 euro in each establish which will also include a small beer, wine or soft drink. Prizes will be provided by the council although at this stage I am unaware of exactly what they will be. They would usually be presented to the bar responsible for the best tapa as well as one or more participants via a draw involving entry voting forms. But it is not about the opportunity of winning or the prize but more a chance to visit the 16 different establishments that are taking part in the competition, many of which are expat owned, whilst at the same time, sampling some of the very best local cuisine. You can pick up a voting form in the process, and then cast your vote for the very best tapas. I was fortunate to meet up with participant Hazel Starr (pictured front page) at the Fuego Tapas and Wine Bar on the upper floor of CC La Fuente. As I got a sneak preview of her two entries, meat balls with choritzo sausage and olives and smoked salmon, cream cheese and olives she told me how they had first featured on the television programme ‘A Place in the Sun’ earlier in the year. “Scarlet, who presented the programme, told me how much she had enjyed them so I decided to go with them both again,” said Hazel. “It should be a really social event,” she said “and

Protected area suffers damaged by fire

he association of neighbours "San Miguel Arcángel" denounced a forest fire last week which took place in an area that is specially protected for birds (ZEPA) on the Sierra de Escalona and Dehesa de Campoamor, which affected an area of pine forest and the Monte Bajo. The fire broke out last Thursday morning at about 9 am and affected an area of ??approximately 1,500 square meters. Eyewitnesses say that the fire was started by someone who was burning agricultural prunings. As the wind subsequently increased in intensity the flames became out of control in an area of terrain that was particularly arid at the time. The association has approached the City Council requesting that they ensure that permits for the burning of agricultural prunings are fully con-

trolled and that precautions are taken to prevent such fires from spreading. They say that the fire was totally avoidable and could very well have resulted in an ecological disaster of incalculable proportions. Just down the road meanwhile, on Monday morning, on Campoamor Golf course, in an area adjacent to the 1st hole, greenkeeping staff were burning prunings of their own which also looked to be spreading out of control as the golfers simply carried on completely oblivious to the flames less than 50 metres away. On closer inspection the area affected was seemingly superintended by the golf course staff, a spokesman for whom said that there was never any danger of the fire spreading to the course, its surrounds or harming either staff or golfers.

Fall in New Car Registrations

ar registrations in Europe’s ‘Big 5’ markets saw a small decrease of 0.5% in October 2016, with total registrations for the month at 829,980 – slightly down from the 834,464 registrations seen in October 2015. However, year-to-date registrations totalled 9,339,623 at the end of October – a 6.6% increase when compared to the same period in 2015. The biggest falls were seen in Germany and France, whose registrations decreased by 5.6% and 4.4% respectively. Despite this, the car market in both France and Germany has grown considerably in 2016, with YtD registrations up by 4.6% and 4.9% respectively. Elsewhere, Italy, Spain and the UK all posted modest growth. Italy grew by 9.7%, with rental registrations increasing by 44.6%, compared to the same time last year. Private registrations were the only negative performers in Italy during October, posting a decrease of 4%. The UK managed a small growth of 1.4% thanks to low interest rates, affordable finance packages and a wider variety of new models. Spain’s growth of 3.3% was modest compared to previous months, due to one less working day in the month, and the end of the PIVE plan (Efficient Vehicles Incentives Plan in Spanish) which affected private registrations.

You will not be required to do any nursing, as people acting as nurses in Spain have to be registered and qualified. However, the charity would like to hear from suitably qualified people to be assessors, visiting clients and assessing their needs. They would then be referred to a suitable organisation or caring charity, of which here are several in this area. Help at Home Costa Blanca run a highly successful charity shop, based in the Playa Flamenca Commercial Centre. Looking more like a retail shop than a charity shop, its takings are breaking all records. Maybe you would like to be a volunteer in the shop? In addition the charity holds fund-raising events in he local area. last week it supported the Emerald Isle's birthday party and raised 1,100 euros to go towards an appeal for a special needs vehicle to help take people to hospitals or doctors surgeries. The charity will need trained drivers for this vehicle. The charity recently held an EGM to elect a new management team. ANENCHANTING DISCOVERY ATCASA MORISCA If

you haven’t yet paid a visit to the Carmen del Campillo, the “Casa Morisca" Moroccan Tea gardens just off the N340, to the southwest of Crevillente, then you really do have a treat in store. Described as a ‘Mini Alhambra’ this is one place that adults really must take in during their trip to Spain. Beautiful gardens, so many little nooks and crannies, so many things to see. If you are a resident in this part of Spain the gardens are an experience like no other and one that you will certainly go back to time and time again. At a guess, the gardens cover an area of about 4 acres, around which a leisurely stroll, with a break for ‘must take’ photographs, tea and treats, will take you a couple of hours. It is a little strange when you first arrive at the gates as you will usually have to wait for someone to let you in, but the owners and staff are very welcoming as you are essentially guests in their wonderful home. You are left completely to your own devices and you can roam around the gardens and it’s buildings entirely at your own pace. There is always someone around to help and if you want to take refreshment, at a very reasonable cost, there is a large selection of different teas and tasty snacks and cakes, but you can also choose soft drinks, coffee or very good orange juice At dusk the gardens are lit by Moroccan glass lights and the peacocks call and fly between the buildings. There are many unique rooms to discover and explore, each new one makes it difficult to choose where to have your tea and mini Moroccan treats. The whole experience is truly enchanting. A real hidden gem but not too far away from the tourist packed coastline.

A true labour of love where you go to chill out on a balmy summer's evening, to bathe in the wonderful heady scent of jasmine, whilst sipping equally aromatic tea and indulging in some fine Moroccan sweets. Costs might be difficult to work out as entry and menu prices are not displayed, but for a group of four you would expect to pay about 25 euro for drinks and entrance. There is a downside however, it is not too easy to find and it might well take some research to ensure that you don’t have a wasted journey. Travelling from Crevillente to Albatera on the N340 road take a right turn at the Cespa Petrol Station. There are two directly opposite each other so difficult to miss. Drive along the side road for about 4km till you come to a cross track with an old electrical sub station on the left. It currently has the large letters SKULL painted across the top. Then it’s a question of following the small white arrows for another km or so along a bumpy and narrow track.. Alternatively of course you could find someone who has been before and ask them to take you along And don’t be disheartened as you drive along the dusty tracks because when you do eventually get there it is an experience that you really will enjoy. ‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. Chinese Takeaway A story about a Chinese tourist visiting Germany made interesting reading this week. In many ways, it is a sad story, but the innocence and bewilderment expressed are very similar to situations that many of us find ourselves in when living as newly arrived expats in a country where the rules, customs and language are not clearly understood. The Chinese tourist had his wallet stolen and so, sensibly, went to the police station to report his loss. Sadly, he did not enter the police station, but instead found himself in the Town Hall where he inadvertently signed an application form claiming refugee status, handed over his passport, which led him into a bewildering nightmare of official German bureaucracy - stranding him as a refugee in an asylum centre for 12 days. Instead of enjoying the delights that German tourism has to offer in a pleasant hotel, the man spent 12 nights on a less than comfortable camp bed in an asylum centre. Although he was well treated and given food and spending money like other refugees, he was also fingerprinted, given a medical examination and taken over 200 kilometres from where he had planned to spend his holiday. Staff at the reception centre were puzzled, since the man was so well dressed, and kept asking for his passport, which was uncharacteristic of asylum seekers.

Eventually, the staff realised that something was badly wrong and called in help from the local Chinese takeaway, as well as using a translation app on a mobile phone. Finally, they released their visitor and he continued his travels to France and Italy, no doubt relieved that his German ‘holiday’ was over. This story reminds me of a number of emails that I regularly receive from British expats who find themselves in trouble with the Spanish authorities, simply because they do not understand the customs, or documents that they are asked to sign. I often hear British expats complaining about what they perceive as “burdensome Spanish bureaucracy”. Of course, in reality, expats living in the UK comment about exactly the same problem with the British system, as do expats living in Germany, France and Italy. The problem is rarely to do with bureaucracy, but is more than likely to be combined with issues relating to a poor understanding of local customs, laws and language. When moving to Spain or any other European country, expats face a bewildering array of legal paperwork. In haste, and to swiftly move on with our business, we often sign things that we should not without first asking questions and seeking clarification. Many do sign, trusting that the bank, town hall, traffic or police authorities will have their best interests at heart, but this is not always the case. Even if you have taken the trouble to learn Spanish, it is always wise to have documents checked by a lawyer, gestor, or someone who really does understand what you are signing, before you sign on the dotted line.

Yes, it may cost a little more, but this disappears into insignificance in circumstances where you may lose your home, face a criminal charge or severe financial penalties. I suspect that the Chinese visitor will be much more careful about what he signs in future. The Oldies fielding two young men which lowered their average age and the Jackals welcoming back Baz the Hat which increased theirs considerably. The Jaguars cheerleader was back, after a stressful house move, and ‘here we go’ once again rang out from the start of a good night for the away team. The first two trebles went to the Jackals with relatively comfortable wins. Only scores of note were Andy Rutter’s 140 and 50 out (10, D20). The third treble was a different matter with Paul, Zack and Graham returning to the ochy to give a fine account, with Graham leading the way with 140. In the doubles it was a similar story with the Jackals taking all three. There were some good darts though. Alex Nikolov and Hugh Galloway started proceedings with Alex hitting 120, then back to back 100’s from Hugh to leave the crazy Bulgarian a straight forward finish. Graham chipped in with some good scores including a ton but couldn’t hold back the tide. The singles were much more evenly contested with some going down to the wire. Three finishes of double one shows the Jackals need some serious practice in this vital area of the game. Leg of the night came in the fourth leg with Graham taking on Andy Rutter. Good scoring from both got them to a finish very quickly with Andy just taking the honours. One of the highlights came just before the last leg when Baz gave us

Oldies and Jackals at the Tavern - Spotlight Hugh Galloway, proud to be wearing his best red shirt full rendition of Elvis’s ‘the Wonder of You’ with backing vocals by Ian from the Oldies. Inspired by his hero and riding on a crest of emotion, Baz then beat Bernie with a ton and d20 finish. Here we go! People of the match awards went to Graham for the Oldies, for some very consistent darts and Baz, probably for his singing. Thanks to the team at the Tavern who provided us with a warm welcome and good food. Our food critic Andy Rutter said it was yummy - it took him three portions to decide. Marry me – bah humbug! G one but not forgotten I t’s only a couple of weeks to go until Studio32’s production of “A Christmas Carol” hits town, and this talented company are into the final stages of rehearsals. Tickets are selling fast, so be sure to book your seat for this festive extravaganza.

Studio32 are always keen to recruit and develop young talent, and two of the roles in this production are played by newcomers to Studio32. Young Ebenezer and his fiancée Emily are played by Luke Ringrose and Emily Bentley respectively (pictured). Luke recently moved to Spain and was keen to put his musical theatre talent to good use so was quickly snapped up by Studio32. Emily has been here rather longer and is an accomplished dancer – now she is stretching herself further with acting and singing under guidance from Studio32’s resident director/choreographer Susan Zillah Wilson. “A Christmas Carol” is set on Christmas Eve, when everyone – except Ebenezer Scrooge – is preparing to make merry and celebrate Christmas. Scrooge is visited by three ghosts: the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Each in turn takes Scrooge

through a part of his life that has been or is yet to be, in order to encourage him to mend his miserly ways. Ebenezer is reminded of his love for Emily, but ultimately he sacrifices that love for a greater love – money! Will he ever repent and mend his ways? Book your seat to find out!

This Broadway musical version of Dickens’ classic tale features a fabulous mix of song and dance, and brings to fruition the company’s aim to focus entirely on full-scale musical theatre. Campoverde Theatre Group performed their latest supper show last month at Phoenix Nights, San Miguel de Salinas to great critical acclaim. The show paid tribute to some of the fantastic stars that have died during 2016. This year has seen the passing of so many famous names of stage, music and television that the show could only celebrate the work of a few of these stars. However tribute was made to Cilla Black, Victoria Wood, Ron Moody, Val Doonican, Natalie Cole, Caroline Aherne, David Bowie, Patrick Macnee and Ben E King. The audiences loved hearing songs made famous by these stars and some of the much loved sketches created by talented writers like Caroline Aherne and Victoria Wood had people in laughing even before the piece even started. This show fully fulfilled its promise to be an evening of great entertainment and the theatre group were warmly praised for their original production. In memory of Adele Kippin, one of Campoverde Theatre Group’s longest active members, who died recently, the group decided to donate the proceeds from the show to PADS, the charity with which Adele was very actively involved.

Horadada Musical Union finish 3rd in National Competition

he Musical Union Horadada has finished third in the National Competition of Music Bands held in Murcia last Saturday. The group Musical de Blanca finished first while la banda de Bullas came second. The Pilar band was directed by Eduardo José Zaragoza. Each of the bands had the was required to play 3 pieces of music before the Judges. The Horadada

selection was 'The witch and the saint' by Steven Reineke, the Paso Doble 'Rocío' by Juan Manuel Molina, and the free work 'Hispaniola' by Jan de Haan . The councillor for Culture in Pilar said that the result brought great credit to the band and to the town and the musical union should be heartily congratulated on their outstanding performance.

Monday brought the Greenlands Sycamores to the EI to take on the Titans and in a very close game the Titans came out on top with an 8-6 win finishing 3-3 on rinks but with the aggregate going to the Titans The Neptunes travelled to play San Miguel Comets where they secured a 7-7 draw. The home team took the rinks 3.5 to 2.5 but the aggregate was taken by the Neptunes 99-98. At home in the afternoon the Moonrakers were beaten by Quesada Diamonds 12-2 with the aggregate 111-85. The Saturns had a bye Wednesday in the winter league the Emerald Isle took on La Siesta away and came away with an impressive 12-0 victory, the aggregate being 115-57 which takes them to top of the table. Friday the Cavaliers were at home in afternoon against San Luis Tigers and got a 8-6 win with a aggregate of 109-87 The Claymores played at home in morning against San Miguel Comets and slipped to a 8-6 home defeat, 3-3 on rinks, but aggregate going to the away team by 113-109 The Roundheads played La Siesta Golds and lost 12-2 with the aggregate 121-85 .........by Elwyn Morris

A disappointing start to the 2016-17 Premier 20 competition with a 13-3 loss to Javea Green with only our triples teams picking up points. Joy& Brian Gardiner with Jean Cooper managing a creditable draw 18 shots apiece whilst Wendy Ralph, Jim Hudson and John Ball won by 24-22. The Apollos returned to winning ways with a 9-5 victory against Montemar and by a points score of 116 -95.Top team was Joy Gardiner with Bill & Sue Jordan winning 32-9 having been behind early in the match whilst similarly Dawn & John Taylor with Harold Charleton behind until the 6th end came through with a 27-16 win. Ann and Robert Heath with John Ball picked up 4 shots on the last 3 ends to gain a creditable draw. Mixed fortunes for the Pioneers who lost to Mazarron by 130 -79 but picked up 6 points thanks to 3 winning rinks. The best result being from Fred Charman, Tom Heaslewood and John Lincoln with a 16-14victory.Two further rinks managed single shot narrow victories. Not such good news in the Winter League this week after last week’s superb performance. Our opponents Emerald Isle were just too good and won on all rinks thereby taking all points. Well done to them and they must have a fine chance of winning the League this season. The Blues travelled to La Marina to play the Seagulls and came away with a 10-4 defeat. A win for the Golds with a 12-2 win against the Emerald Isle Roundheads with the shots being 121 to 85. Top rink was Penny Porter, Rod Edgerton and John Clarke with a 28-5 victory this was well supported with 4 other winning rinks. Well done to Rab Logan, playing his first game as skip, with Fred and Janet Charman winning 21-10 and to Ann Edgerton playing her first league game in 2 years winning with Roy Millward and John Porter15-13. Minute’s Silence prior to Penultimate Race Day R emembrance Sunday was the date of the penultimate race day of the SAMM Autumn 2016 season and those attending observed a minutes silence to honour all those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we could enjoy our current life style.

Seven boats entered but the start was delayed to 12.15pm when the support boat engine would not start and the old rib had to be forced into service

Unless he made a drastic tactical error, the low wind speed foretold another two wins for Don Clark in his Hartley 12.2 and this proved the case as he won with a margin of over 300 seconds in both races. But there were some close battles and finishing time differences between many of the other boats. As on the previous race day, Mistral was still not sailing well and still need checking for rigging or other problems.

The resulting disruption saw only one boat make the start on time as the wind had died away as the morning progressed to less than 3 knots. The slow pace forced the Race Officer to shorten the race to just one lap which took between 1 and 1.5 hours for all boats to complete.

The wind had increased to 5 knots when the second race started, still making for a slow pace but making two laps possible with boats finishing in between 41 minutes and 11/4 hours.

La Marina Bowls Club By Barry Latham Shots really counted on Monday. The Pathfinders had a very close game in the morning when they drew with El Rancho. John Morgan led Dave Bulfield and Angie Butler to a win. While Colin and Lynne Armitage plus Margaret Sadler managed a draw. So guess who led his rink to yet another win with great help from Dave McGraw and Lorita Rae. Yes, Baz Sadler. Seven more shots gave the Explorers the two extra points in a 10 – 4 win over Monte Mar Matadors. Jim Manning, Jim Reeves and Margaret McLaughlin plus Dave Hadaway, Tom Spencer and Roger Stacey had good wins while Dave’s better half had a well fought win with the help of Phil Pape and Garth Slater. The same with Margaret Finlayson’s rink with Mike Smith and the versatile Maureen Kidd winning in a very tight game by one shot. Always looking for consistency in bowls, well we’ve got that but the wrong sort. We lost again in the Winter League 10 – 2 away at BBC this time. Colin and Lynne Armitage with the pair of Mike’s, Stone and Smith got our two points. Must thank our reserve, Roger Stacey for travelling all that way to see us lose. Six shots overall separated us. The Sharks travelled to Vistabella to play the Picadors and came away with an 8-6 win. For this months meeting the Spanglish Golf Society and a group of 24 players visited the established course at El Valle taking advantage of the excellent society deal obtained from Costa Blanca Green Fee Services. Despite warnings of a severe Gota Fria the weather was beautiful and the course in very good condition,despite seeding work on some tees and with some of the fastest greens we have played on all year. Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. THE MENTAL GAME It is often stated that 90% of golf is in the mind BUT tell this to a beginner who can’t even make contact with the ball.

A full field turned out to play at Campoamor Golf Club, the home of La Siesta for what turned out to be a great Captains Day. The course was in excellent condition & proved to be tough on the day as was reflected in the scores. The day was followed by a black tie dinner dance in the main club house, & as usual the food was very good & the members & guests danced the night away. We have to thank the staff at Campoamor for their friendly & efficient service, once again they looked after La Siesta who have been based at Campoamor for 26 years. A regular guest at Campoamor, Pat O’Brien, an ex US veteran who plays his golf at Mahon Golf Club, Cork City had his 2nd hole in 1 whilst playing with La Siesta- hole 15 & on this occasion hole 6 & we all lifted a glass to celebrate. Rockets Golf Society back at Vistabella Back again to Vistabella for our November home game but what a difference to the last 9 months!! It was howling a gale and bitter cold. I was happy I had a torn muscle in my arm, and could not go out to play, Course in brilliant condition with lovely greens. That is if the ball stood still. Considering the conditions some of the scores were not too bad, I was expecting worse .Both Gold and Silver categories were won by the same points 31. I personally believe that 80% of golf is basic technique (posture, grip and alignment) with the remainder made up of touch, feel and mental preparation and toughness. Golf is a mechanical movement that requires training to work correctly. However even as a learner the physical movements that you undertake originate in your brain. There are methods you can use to ensure the brain learns in a fast an efficient manner or conversely you can make your brain totally confused. The following methods will allow your golfing brain to work effectively: Follow only one method of how to play (like learning to ride a bike or brush your teeth). Develop a pre-shot routine and consistently apply it at all times on the golf course (it will take your mind off pressure situations and will give you something to fall back on when things are not going well during a round). Separate learning the swing from playing golf (learn the swing on the practise range but play golf on the course). Celebrate your successes and re-label failures as experience and feedback. Give yourself time, it will not all happen at once. Remember, when you change anything in your golf game, sometimes things get worse before they get better. Have confidence in your swing and mental coaches; they know what they are doing. Remember true champions are distinguished from the other golfers by the way in which they think. You too can improve your overall game if you change the way that you think.

Buba to Torry rescue in point saving performance

A Sunday tea time kick off at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, involving Torry and near nasty (sic) neighbours Elche Ilicitano, was the latest instalment of senior football held in the Vega Baja region. Both teams lost their respective matches the previous weekend, also by the same 0-3 scoreline, although Elche´s defeat was at home.

They´re currently in the middle of a bad run of form, having had a great start to the season, dropping down to mid table in div 3. Torry meanwhile are still stuck the relegation zone, although manager Pedreño has recently added another 3 signings to his small squad. Bienvenido Antonio Calzado, Alberto Robles and Alex Parajon. Your services will be much needed due to injuries and suspensions, giving boss man the luxury of possibly a full bench (even though suspension bars him from sitting there himself!). However, of the new arrivals, only Calzado made the starting lineup, slotting in to the Torry back four. In front of an above average ‘derby’ Referee Jorge Lajara and his assistants never crowd the early part of the game itself allowed the game to get going was a rather disjointed affair with refer-

There was little flowing football as the man in green and black pulled the play back for the most minor of offences, although when Pastor was unceremoniously bundled over in the box he chose to turn a blind eye. Nevertheless it was the home side that was having the better of the exchanges with Pastor blasting over from close range early on. Torry debutant Calzado took just 18 minutes to find the referees notebook before a clearance from keeper Buba fell to the feet of Elche’s Alberto who opened the scoring with 20 minutes gone. But as so often happens the home side were back on terms moments later. This time it was a clearance in the Elche goalmouth that fell kindly for Pastor who tapped into an empty net, no more than Torry deserved. The entertainment continued with a goalbound

effort from Damien deflected for a corner just prior to the interval in a half that the blue and whites ‘edged’ and from which they perhaps deserved a little more. As a pattern began to emerge for the second period it looked as though they were unlikely to achieve the promise they had shown in the first 45 as Elche took the upper hand with a series of incursions into the blue and white half. But on the occasions that they breached the Torry wall Buba proved unbeatable between the posts pulling off a series of excellent saves to keep the home side in the game. Llor was particularly lively for Elche and came close with a number of efforts as his pace gave him that extra yard, but it was a late Buba save from ex Torry player Brani that had the crowd applauding in awe and that really earned the point as once again the man from New Guinea was the difference between the two sides. Next week the trip north to Club Deportivo Almazora as Torry go in search of their third win on the road in what is becoming an increasingly difficult season.

Mare Nostrum too strong for Elda Torrevieja’s Mare Nostrum handball team took advantage of an injury hit Elda at the Cecilio Gallego centre on Saturday with a comprehensive victory by 35-17. The task of the visitors, who were trailing 13-3 with just a quarter of the game gone, became almost impossible when they lost their solitary goalkeeper through injury

after 20 minutes, following which the home side piled on the goals. Marco Box with 7 and Iván Ríos with 5 goals were the pick of the forwards in a one sided second period as the home side put Elda to the sword to record their best win of the season.
