ADAPTING TO BEACH & SURF DETECTION T

he ADAPT metal detecting club operates across the South of Alicante and into Murcia. With 32 English-speaking members, due to Spain’s draconian detecting laws on dry land, the club has been pushed toward beach and surf detecting, however, after 14 years ADAPT still continues to prosper. Members get together on three days a week, all year round, to enjoy the fresh air and breathtaking sunrises, as they travel up to 45 minutes to get to a beach venue. Although every club member is licensed, with a photo ID, due to restrictions with metal detection on any land, the club efforts mainly help to address environmental issues, metal pollution that is invisible to the human eye on the beaches and in the sea. They also collect the discarded fishing lead weights in the Mar Menor, handing them over to "Association Hippocampus" a project that protects the Sea Horse, which is almost extinct due to the toxicity of the sea. The amount of metal rubbish on the beaches and in the shallow surf is remarkable. In one month alone, the club picked up 201 pieces of lead from the Mar Menor with their waterproof metal detectors, a figure that is generally repeated every month of the year.
