RE EDUCATION FOR ANIMAL ABUSERS

he Court of Alicante has launched a pioneering programme in Spain for the re-education of offenders who have been convicted of mistreating animals, which aims to stop such individuals from re offending.

T

This was announced last week by the President of the Court of Alicante, Vicente Magro, who explained that the initiative, a nine month training course, is already in place for cases of gender violence or traffic offenders. In recent weeks they have seen images of the Guardia Civil rescuing a dog from

inside a sun baked car in the streets of Torrevieja, a dog thrown from a terrace in Valencia, many animals rescued after spending hours outdoors and without water, images of a youth mistreating his dog on social media and of course last week’s events in an Orihuela Court where a man from Callosa del Segura was given a 9 month suspended sentence for mistreating 21 horses, many of which are now in the care of the Easy Horse care Centre in Rojales. Magro said that such cases are becoming more frequent and his initiative aims to reduce them. The judgement against the Callosa man was made last month but only published by the courts last Thursday. It follows after a Seprona (the environmental protection service of the Guardia Civil) raid on a farm just outside the town two years ago when five donkeys, two mules and fourteen horses were found to be extremely malnourished and many near death.

Monday 18th July - Sunday 24th July, 2016 and three years of disqualification from owning equines or trading animals. However judge Maria Monserrate Mula Igualada then agreed to suspend the sentence for two years, provided the individual commits no further crimes during this period.

At the time the donkeys and mules were handed over to the association Refugio El Burrito, while the horses and mares were moved to the facilities of the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre. The Weedings, who run the centre, have cared for the 14 horses ever since.

The Weedings were clearly disappointed with the outcome saying "We had hoped this man would receive some sort of fine. He’s cost so many people so much time and money, not to mention the suffering he inflicted upon these animals, and now he gets off almost scot-free."

The trial took place in June at which the accused pleaded guilty to an offense of continuous maltreatment to the animals for which he accepted a sentence of nine months in prison

The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre continues to care for 12 of the Callosa de Segura horses. Sadly, one skeletal mare died of intestinal complications shortly after her rescue – but not before

miraculously giving birth to a foal, Lily, who continues to live happily with her adopted mother at the rescue centre. A second horse died of old age in December last year. “We are so pleased to see these horses now enjoying life at our rescue centre. They spend their days in the fresh air and sunshine, and will never again be chained to walls,” Sue Weeding said. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies entirely on donations to fund its important animal welfare work, including the feeding and care of the centre’s more than 90 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. Just another crazy day in Torrevieja

T

he Emergency services and police faced numerous alarms last Tuesday the most serious of which included a bather in distress and the disappearance of a ten year old child, mobilising Local Police, Civil Guard Maritime Rescue lifeguards and even a search and rescue helicopter. All too often we hear of the distress caused by such disappearances but fortunately, on this occasion, they all resulted in happy endings. The distressed bather was, fortunately, a false alarm coming about in the early afternoon when a lifeguard reported that he had spotted a woman on Playa del Cura who had been clinging to one of the buoys bounding the permitted area for bathing. He said that he had seen her disappear under the water. Initially a boat was deployed from the Maritime Rescue Service after which a search and rescue helicopter was called in making a number of passes over the suspected area, along the Juan Aparicio promenade. The search was abandoned after about an hour when no trace of the bather was found. According to Councillor for Beaches, Javier Manzanares, the authorities agreed that it was quite probably a false alarm.

As that search was being abandoned there then followed reports of a missing ten year old girl of foreign origin, said to have been last seen bathing, also on Playa del Cura. Fortunately she reappeared half an hour later safe and sound, much to the relief of her family and the emergency services. Lifeguards from Grupo EULEN, the company that provides the Torrevieja service, only took up their responsibilities last week, following administrative problems with the contract. However they have already pulled two dead bathers from the sea as a result of which the young socorristas are slowly gaining the trust of beachgoers and bathers. Of course Tuesday’s events at Play del Cura were also spiced up with the usual protests from groups of residents and tourists about the lack of services in the town. To this list we can also add the traffic chaos on the N332, which often records accidents and traffic jams, specifically along the several kilometers of road from Jardin de las Naciones to Punta Prima. It would seem that the annual outpouring of Madrid's residents has taken place a little early this year. What else can we say other than Summer is finally here!

Guardamar Armed Robber caught

O

The Guardia Civil and Judicial Police both attended the scene ant took forensic evidence, including fingerprints and CCTV footage in which they could see a man of between 1.70 and 1.75 metres tall and of slim build, possibly of Spanish nationality, partly hiding his face with a white cap.

The cashier, who noted that the gunman was very nervous, reacted by saying that she was not the cashier and could not open the safe because it needed a code which she didn´t have. The assailant dropped the gun to the ground, which gave the impression that it was fake by the noise it made, reassuring the cashier of her actions.

Three years later, thanks to analysis of the data, the Guardia Civil were able to identify and arrest a 40-year old Spanish suspect on suspicion of attempted robbery with intimidation.

fficers from the Guardia Civil have arrested a man wanted in connection with an armed robbery 3 years ago.

An automated fingerprint scan identified the man as being wanted in connection with the offence committed in July, 2013, when a man entered a supermarket and pulled a gun on the cashier, demanding money.

The man immediately recovered the gun, grabbed a packet of tissues, and attempted to open the safe by randomly pressing numbers on the keypad. The store manager heard the noise and went to check what was happening, at which point the robber gave up and ran out of the store.

Torrevieja Security Alert Part of Torrevieja centre was closed off on Friday when a suspect package was identified on calle CanĂłnigo Torres. Torrevieja has been the site of a number of terrorist attacks in the past and so on the day after the most recent attacks in France, vigilance was higher than normal. The Guardia Civil closed off the area after receiving an alert from a business owner. Luckily, on this occasion, the parcel was identified as having been lost by a postal delivery worker and was not a threat.

The Automated Fingerprint Identification System is a database of fingerprints that contains more than 216,000 records and is accessible by authorised representatives of 190 member countries of INTERPOL, which allows law enforcers to monitor entries and identify suspects through their movements and records.

Provincial Government hosted in Orihuela L ast Wednesday the mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, received the President of the Provincial Government of the Alicante Province, Cesar Sanchez, on the occasion of the hosting of the Board of the itinerant Government, by the city of Orihuela. The itinerant government celebrates each of its sessions in a different municipality aiming to cover all Alicante regions within each year. Each session addresses the usual administrative matters as well as promoting local employment creation before it goes on to tackle the issues of importance related to the locations in where they are held, thus the visit to Orihuela last week.

hand to needs of the residents of Orihuela and the Vega Baja.

In response the provincial president said that he is about to position the city of Orihuela, calling it the Cultural Capital of the Costa Blanca, in all of the upcoming tourism fairs, just one of the many related projects that will get underway in the coming months. Among the other decisions taken in Orihuela, Sanchez announced an investment of about 4.7 billion euros in 39 different projects amongst the 27 municipalities of Vega Baja.

This mobile plenary is what Sanchez refers to as the ‘Open Council Portal' and is the deliverance of one of the promises he made when he became Provincial Head last year. It also provides the opportunity of attendance by local councillors, as well as members of the different social groups that operate in each town or city.

Thirteen of the projects fall within the scope of the development of public roads (1,540,699 euros), seven in the refurbishmen and repair of infrastructure and property (940,273 euros), six in improving rural roads (292,393 euros), four in streetlights (588,860 euros), four in parks and gardens (183,501 euros), two water treatment works (179,961 euros) and sewerage (131,192 euros).

The mayor said he was pleased to welcome the President to the city. He said that it was important for the citizens of Orihuela to see the Provincial government in action and see how they address at first

More specifically he announced that 800,000 euros of Provincial funding has been earmarked to improve many of the historic streets, squares and roads in Orihuela city.

Second Referendum petition to be debated

T

he British Government Petitions Committee has decided to schedule a House of Commons debate on the petition calling for a second EU Referendum. The debate will take place on 5 September at 4.30pm in Westminster Hall, the second debating chamber of the House of Commons. The debate will be opened by the SNP Member of Parliament, Ian Blackford. The Committee has decided that the huge number of people signing this petition means that it should be debated by MPs. The Petitions Committee would like to make clear however, that in scheduling this debate, they are not supporting the call for a second referendum. The debate will allow MPs to put forward a range of views on behalf of their constituents. At the end of the debate, a Government Minister will respond to the points raised. A debate in Westminster Hall does not have the power to change the law, and won’t end with the House of Commons deciding whether or not to have a second referendum.

The EU’s policy of freedom of movement and mutual recognition of professional qualifications within the EU means that many health and social care professionals currently working in the UK have come from other EU countries. This includes 55,000 of the NHS’s 1.3 million workforce and 80,000 of the 1.3 million workers in the adult social care sector.

New webpage for Expats following referendum

B It is widely acknowledged that the NHS is currently struggling to recruit and retain permanent staff – in 2014, there was a shortfall of 5.9 per cent (equating to around 50,000 full-time equivalents), with particular gaps in nursing, midwifery and health visitors. Similar problems exist in the social care sector, which has an estimated vacancy rate of 5.4 per cent, rising to 7.7 per cent in domiciliary care services. High turnover is also an issue, with an overall turnover rate of 25.4 per cent (equating to around 300,000 workers leaving their role each year). Until the UK extracts itself from its obligations under EU treaties, the policy on freedom of movement remains unchanged; however, given the current shortfalls being experienced in both the health and social care sectors the government must clarify its intentions on the ability of EU nationals to work in health and social care roles in the UK, not least to avoid EU staff who are currently working in the NHS deciding to leave to work in other countries. Following the announcement of the referendum result, Bruce Keogh, NHS England’s Medical Director, and Jeremy Hunt, the Secretary of State for Health, have both publicly sought to reassure European staff working in the health service. Mike Padgham, chair of the United Kingdom Homecare Association, has also emphasised the importance of EU staff to the sector. We endorse these views but would go further: providers of NHS and social care services should retain the ability to recruit staff from the EU when there are not enough resident workers to fill vacancies. This could potentially replicate the recent approach taken by the Home Office, by adding specific occupations to the Migration Advisory Committee’s shortage occupation list, which currently enables employers to recruit nurses and midwives from outside the European Economic Area. Full report: www.kingsfund.co.uk

ritish nationals looking for advice on travelling and living in Europe, following the result of the EU referendum, can now visit a new webpage on the UK government website at www.gov.uk. The webpage explains that negotiations for the United Kingdom to leave the EU may take up to two years or more. The government will negotiate new arrangements with the EU including on issues affecting British expats and travellers. The government also wants the legal rights of British nationals living in European countries, as well as EU nationals in the UK, to be properly protected. Until then there will be no immediate changes. During the period of the negotiations, the UK remains a full member of the EU, entitled to all the benefits and obligations of membership. The webpage includes information on passports, pensions, healthcare, and also has a link to some general information on applying for

No rush for Article 50 Britain will not trigger Article 50 to start the process of leaving the European Union until Scotland’s position in negotiations is clear, Theresa May has signalled. Though the UK voted to leave the European Union by 52 per cent to 48 per cent, Scotland, along with Northern Ireland and London, overwhelmingly voted to stay. The Prime Minister said after a meeting with Ms Sturgeon she would not formally start the process of leaving the bloc until there was a coherent “UK approach” to negotiations. “Scotland’s very important to me. When I stood on the steps of Downing Street on Wednesday I made clear that I believe in the United Kingdom,” she said.

New Earthquake Emergency Plan for Torrevieja

C

haired by the mayor, the Director General of the Agency for Safety and Response to Emergencies, Jose Maria Angel Batalla, attended a working party in Torrevieja last week, in which he contributed to the production of a draft Comprehensive Emergency Plan for the town with emphasis given to seismic risk. The draft plan will now be used to form the information base which will be presented at a forthcoming conference with the intention of producing the Plan of Emergency Seismic Risk, the document to be used as the model for other municipalities within Valencia, following adaptation to each of their the peculiarities. The meeting will be held in the last quarter of the year. Batalla spoke of the importance of the Emergency Management Agency as the essential provider of assistance to improve response times to any catastrophe, improve coordination between the various agencies involved and to ensure that all necessary resources are available in real time. The importance of new technologies and the use of Drones in emergencies was also discussed. It was noted that the Polytechnic

espite the doom and gloom forecast by many following the UK’s surprise Brexit vote, it appears that it will take more than Brexit to dissuade many thousands of Brits intent upon heading to a new life in the sun.

Latest quarterly reports show that property prices in Spain are at least stabilising, and in many cases bouncing back, to the levels last seen in 2007 and 2008. This trend varies from region to region with increases seen in 30 of Spain’s 50 provinces. The most significant property price increases have recently been seen in La Rioja (7.4%), Catalunya (6.8%), Madrid (5.4%) and the Canary Islands (3.6%). My own limited discussions with estate agents in the Canary Islands, the Costa Blanca and the Costa del Sol also report a positive rather than negative outlook regarding property prices and the continued, if not increasing, interest from Brits anxious to begin a new life in Spain. Many had assumed that following the Brexit vote, interest from potential expats would decrease until the position with the European Union stabilised. However, judging from the rapid increase in traffic to ‘The Canary Islander’ website and, in particular the ‘Living and Working in Spain and the Canary Islands’ pages, it is clear that the reverse has happened, where web traffic has trebled in the two weeks following the vote. Emails and correspondence from would-be expats indicate that many have decided to ‘leap’ across the Channel before the gates close, if that happens, as well as activity fuelled by disillusionment from what many see as the UK rapidly turning into an insular parody of ‘Little Britain’. It is good to see so many expats making decisions to secure their future within Europe, with the Irish Embassy having to take on more staff in the rush created by British expats attempting to obtain Irish passports, as well as considerable interest in applying for

Spanish, French or Italian citizenship, for those who meet the relevant criteria. During the run up to the EU Referendum, it is true that many people, and particularly the elderly, sick and those who live alone, reviewed their futures as expats living within a Europe that would not include the UK. These concerns continue, and a number have written to tell of their concerns about disturbing a life that they had always considered as settled for the remainder of their lifetimes. Many simply do not have sufficiently good health or financial resources to return to the UK, and their entitlement to services in the UK lapsed long ago. In some ways, these elderly expats are literally trapped between the devil and the deep blue sea, and early clarification from the UK Government is anxiously awaited. Far from confidence in an expat life reducing, early evidence suggests that confidence and determination in working towards an expat life is increasing. Although it is still too early to be clear about the motivation of many and to predict where this trend will lead, I suspect that disillusionment with the instability of the UK’s political process, as well as widespread disagreement about the UK’s future within Europe is leading many to vote with their feet. It will be interesting to see how this develops in the months and years ahead. Online anger as ANIMAL protesters vow to save Lorenza ANIMAL protesters are campaigning to stop the slaughter of the mother of the bull that killed a Spanish matador, 29year-old Victor Barrio, who was gored in front of hundreds of spectators, including his wife, in Madrid on Saturday. He became the first bullfighter to be killed during an event this century. As per tradition, the mother of the bull which speared him in the chest, causing fatal injuries, is destined to be destroyed to "kill off the bloodline". But furious anti-cruelty supporters say this is not fair and the animal should not have to pay the price for the matador's death although one Spanish newspaper is reporting that the mother, Lorenza, is already dead - not destroyed but having died of old age just a few days ago. A Twitter trend has been set up under #SalvemosALorenza and is being supported by hundreds of people every minute, to the extent it has become a trending topic across Spain.

The International Skin Cancer Index •

Spain 25th highest skin cancer diagnoses world wide

•

Most cases per capita: 1. New Zealand, 2. Australia, 3. Switzerland, 4. Sweden, 5. Norway

•

Best access to treatment: 1. Sweden, 2. Switzerland, 3. Italy, 4. Denmark, 5. Germany

•

Highest mortality rate per capita: 1. Nigeria, 2. Pakistan, 3. China, 4. Bangladesh, 5. Albania

Spain is 25th on the Susceptibility Index while the UK is 10th and Ireland 14th.

Derma.plus, the platform for dermatological advice from leading physicians, conducted an international study on skin cancer to better understand the geographical and socio-economic factors which make incidences of the disease more common - and sometimes deadly - in certain regions more frequently than others. The research makes two decisive findings; firstly, it highlights the inequalities in health care spending across the globe. For example, Bangladesh is the country with the lowest skin cancer prevalence per capita, however the amount spent on 300 skin cancer patients here is equal to the amount spent on one case in Norway. Secondly, the research shows that skin cancer is more prevalent in developed countries. The combination of UV Factor levels and higher scores on the Skin-Tone Scale, indicating paler skin, create an environment where skin cancer is more likely. The study is divided into two sections: the Skin Cancer Susceptibility Index analyses the UV factor, the average population skin-tone and the rate of incidences from a range of countries to identify geographically where the highest rates of skin cancer are most likely to occur. The second section, the Socioeconomic Treatment Index, cross references national health spending, access to treatment and individual income against mortality rates to better understand the efforts undertaken worldwide to combat the disease. The results of the Susceptibility Index showed New Zealand as the nation with the highest incidence and likelihood of melanoma per capita, closely followed by Australia, Switzerland, Sweden and Norway. These outcomes are indicative that a high level of UV exposure, coupled with a lighter skin tone (as calculated by the Fitzpatrick-Scale) led to a higher diagnosis of skin cancer. The US and the UK came in ninth and tenth place respectively, with Ireland close behind in fourteenth position.

from the disease have doubled since 1990 and stakeholders such as the World Health Organization are struggling cope with the magnitude of cases and inequality of international medical care. Although the incidence rate may be high in countries with a combination of light skin tone and high UV exposure, adequate health care spending, presumably in the form of treatments and prevention education, appears to be effective in keeping the mortality rate lower than in countries with fewer diagnoses, but where less funds are spent on skin cancer prevention. … For the full results: https://derma.plus/en/global-skin-cancer-index/

The second part of the study, the Socioeconomic Treatment Index, revealed that countries such as New Zealand and Australia, which have some of the highest incidences of skin cancer, also have some of the lowest death rates due to high levels of health spending (based on data from the World Bank), and closer equality in terms of life quality across society (based on data from the Human Development Index). Conversely Nigeria scored lowest on the Socioeconomic Treatment Index due to higher societal inequalities and lower health spending, which arguably leads to the high mortality rate. This is despite their previously low rank in the Susceptibility Index. “The incidence of both non-melanoma and melanoma skin cancers has increased dramatically over the past decades,” states Prof. Dietrick Abeck, Chief Medical Advisor for Derma.plus. “Worldwide, more than 3-million non-melanoma skin cancers and 150,000 melanoma skin cancers are diagnosed each year. One in every three cancers diagnosed is a skin cancer.” Taking into account the fact that skin cancer claims a life every 10 minutes, the study aims to highlight the precautions and prevention that can be taken across the world to combat the disease. Cost of Tourism website criticised

T

he PSOE councillor Victor Ruiz, appeared before the media on Thursday demanding an explanation from Sofia Alvarez, the Councillor for Tourism, for allegedly overspending her budget on the revamped Orihuela Tourism website by 58%. According to Ruiz, “it is absolutely ridiculous that the City hired a company based in Gandia who simply copied the Alcoy Tourist Information site.” “But even more surprising,” he said, “is the fact that the development of the original Alcoy site cost just 2,600 euro whilst copying the site to produce the Orihuela version cost 5,000 euros.”

A whole new meaning to the term ‘Sleeping Policeman’

She said that accusations by the opposition of irresponsibility are insulting to the Council. “We have recovered a website that was completely obsolete. The contractor that we chose was the cheapest from those who submitted bids for the work and they offered to provide the site with many additional features that their counterparts were unable to deliver.

An image of a policemen who was photographed whilst napping at his desk in the middle of the working day has gone viral on local community and social media sites. The actions of the officer, who has not been named, have drawn widespread criticism from members of the public, his colleagues and his superiors and it is understood that he will almost certainly be facing some sort of disciplinary sanction. One contributor on a social media page said that he was absolutely disgusted that the officer was caught sprawled out, with his feet across the top of his desk. He pointed out that in some workplaces this is considered as gross misconduct, particularly when it takes place in full view of the public and the officer should

She said that Orihuela had a Tourism website managed by the previous administration that failed to fulfil its purpose. It now possesses a site that provides the best possible tourism promotion platform alongside those of towns such as Torrevieja and Benidorm.

Orihuela Costa Parks

I

read your article from Paul Piccio Hernandez re the motion to allocate funds for the upkeep of the parks in Orihuela Costa.

To read that the motion was turned down did not surprise me, neither did the fact that our own local councillor voted against it.

Victor Ruiz talking to the press last week

However Alvarez was quick to defend her position calling a press conference on Thursday morning to refute the PSOE accusations.

19

My first question would be where are the 110 parks?. I have lived here for 9 years and get around the area quite a bit. I would be hard pushed to find 10 parks, unless you are referring to the many desolate pieces of scrubland scattered with litter.

She urged the socialist councillor, Victor Ruiz, “to apologize and stop lying about the good work being carried out by the Department of Tourism".

Ruiz asked Alvarez for an urgent explanation of the reasoning behind her decision to employ the Gandia concern when the skills were available in Orihuela in many local web development companies. He also asked her to justify the overspend saying that the site should actually have been cheaper as the designers simply had to copy the original template.

www.theleader.info

Sophia Alvarez has proved to be another disaster for Orihuela Costa. When she was appointed we heard all the familiar claims that she had a vested interest in the Costa as she actually lived here. I well remember similar claims from a certain Monica Lorente, now awaiting trial. The similarities are many, they both promise much, they both take every opportunity to get their photographs in the press and actually do nothing for the coast. We must be the only area to get press coverage whenever a street is getting cleaned as if this was something outstanding. The streets and rubbish collections should not be newsworthy issues but carried out regularly and systematically. Already the streets are filthy, rubbish bins overflowing with the influx of holidaymakers, cockroaches are everywhere. So Sophia Alfarez must not notice this or possibly just does not care! We pay more for the privilege of living in a neglected, filthy area with a councillor who votes against an improvement. Orihuela Costa will never get a fair deal from the city, we need to be independent from it. Regards Ian Fairburn

Five race wins for Shoestring Cuatro The SAMM 2016 Race Series was a great success with 13 of the planned races being run, the cancellations only due to other events at CTD making it impossible to go ahead. It was a closely fought race for the top three places and the results could have been different if the regular skippers on Conny and Sirocco had been around for the last race day. Each boat was able to discard their worst three results so that 10 of the 13 counted. SAMM run these handicap races on the low points system, the winning boat being Shoestring Cuatro with 17.75 points including five race wins, 2nd Sirocco with 27.5 points and 3rd Conny with 29 pts. Sirocco’s second place was notable as, for many races, she was sailed single handed by Julian Pering, right in the photograph. Cuatros crew varied during the season so Jack Moss, left, collected the trophy. Everybody is looking forward to the Autumn Series which starts on September 4th. Masters Firsts in Playa Paraiso Torrevieja On Sunday 10th July on the beach Playa Paraiso, Mar Menor, the organisation “Esclerosis Multiple Asociacion de Cartagena y Comarca” hosted the “VII Travesia Solidaria Playa Paraiso”. The two sea races were split between the younger children swimming 600m and the rest of the competitors covering a distance of 1500m. Club Natacion Torrevieja was represented by 5 swimmers, Amy Connolly being the youngest and gaining 5th place in the 600m Alevin (11 &12 years)category with a time of 5:41. In the longer of the two races, Zoe Connolly, Skye Burns, Beth Altabas and Vicki Connolly swam against 120 swimmers over 1500m course marked out with buoys. Zoe came 7th in the Infantil category (14&15yrs) with a time of 20:11 and Syke with a time off approximately 23 minutes as she missed the second buoy was not ranked. Vicki in the Masters 50+ age group came in first with a time of 23:27 and Beth Altabas continued in the winning theme coming first in the Masters 60+ age group. In two weeks time the Club swim again in the XII Port of Torre de la Horadada Traversia.

San Miguel Golf Society at Alenda

Breezy but bright weather greeted the 34 members making the trip north to Alenda golf, our thanks go to Alenda for arranging a game for us at such short notice after the days before cancellation of Alicante Golf because of water problems. Fairways were in good condition and many tees brought forward, but greens unusually woolly and therefore slow, causing some players major problems, as did the swirling nature of the wind, often the case at this course. Only Chris Hamblett (38) and Ken Flaherty (37) managed to break par. The final of the SMGS 2016 Roger Pearson doubles matchplay competition was played between The Wizard & Oz ( John Osborne & Darren Hancock) and The Dumpers (Steve Davis & Ivan Hanak) after a hard fought match Wizard & Oz won on the first extra hole which was exactly the same outcome as last year’s final between the two teams. The day’s stableford competition results, by category and in reverse order, were the following: Bronze Category: 5th, Mary Cleary (34), 4th, Gratten Forber (35), 3rd, Brian Mulligan (35), 2nd, Ray Ewins (36) & 1st with the best score of the day

Chris Hamblett (38). Silver Category: 5th, Ron Stenhouse (32), 4th Steve Davis (32), 3rd Charles Jones (33), 2nd Richard Cleary (35) and 1st, Ken Flaherty with 37 points. Gold Category: 5th, Darren Hancock (30), 4th John Osborne (30 on CB), 3rd Steve Higgins (31), 2nd Andy Imrie (32) and 1st, Robin Eastman with 35 points. The Abacus highlighted how fortunes can change in golf in such a short time, with last week’s third top scorer in his category Norman Cahill taking home the bottle of wine. Nearest the pins on the par 3’s (open to all) went to Richard Cleary (3), Norman Mcbride (5), Gratten Forber (13) and Chris Hamblett (16). Our thanks go to the staff at Alenda golf course for their contribution to the day. Keep up to date with all SMGS matters by logging on to our website www.smgs.org or simply give Barry Roehrig a call on 966 731 033 to find out more about the society and its weekly golf gettogethers. Costa Cobras RFC to welcome touring teams Costa Cobras RFC have already lined up a couple of teams to come over touring next year, with regulars to the area Old Brods RFC from the Halifax area are going to play Wondervra the Alicante vets team in March. While at the end of April we are going to be having Cannock RFC ladies team and will be looking at holding a mini tournament and looking for 3 local ladies teams to play them. This week we are meeting Guardamar town hall again to organise a ground for these teams to play at, and others in the pipeline for next year. Also to hold the annual 7’s tournament in the area, which has been held for the last 5 years at a nearby ground, but are looking for a more permanent place. Also with both the lady’s and men’s Spanish teams soon playing at the Olympic Games in Brasil, this is a great opportunity to develop rugby over here, specially with so many different nationalities in the area. If other areas can do it with mainly Spanish population there is no reason why we can not do so, so come along and join in the training and help develop the club. This coming weekend we have the San Javier beach 5’s on 23 July. Costa Cobras RFC training is on Monday and Wednesday from 18.30-20.00 on Guardamar beach in front of the restaurants and then in July and August from 20.00-21.00. Looking to recruit more players through training on the beach to get a team together ready for the beach tournaments and then into the Valencian league. So come a long and join the rugby revolution with this new rugby club from the start and be part of something new in the area. All ages, gender and nationalities are welcome, from beginners to experienced players, the more the merrier, as we are based on the true traditional ethics of the sport. So come along and join the newest rugby club on the Costa Blanca. Also team bonding after training in the nearest bar for a drink and chat, just how rugby should be. For more information about the club contact myself, Dutch, on 692 767 242. Also I am down at Zoco market on Sunday from 09.0013.30, so come on down and find more out about the club and rugby in the area. ‘MIKE PROBERT TALKS GOLF

(Sponsored by Costa Blanca Green Fee Services). Here on the Costa’s golf is one of the biggest leisure time activities for both tourists and resident alike and with this in mind we have secured the services of Mike Probert of Costa Blanca Green Fee Services to provide a weekly round up of local golfing events and topics and in conjunction with us at THE LEADER will provide discounted golf prices to all of our readers and run our golf competitions. PREPARING TO PLAY (PART 2) Last week I reviewed the importance to prepare yourself and your equipment in readiness to play golf well and with good intentions. All of this pre golf preparation should be done well in advance of leaving for a tournament, but if it does help to avoid those night before nerves, do it then and please remember to leave yourself time to ‘wind down’ before going to bed. Just make sure that you do get a good night’s sleep before a tournament, it really does help because you could be the best player in the world, but if you don’t have the energy to win, then you’ll be back in the pack. Golf is not just about hitting a golf ball it’s about the whole package from the start of preparation to the prize giving and you must get the whole thing right. If the day and evening before are organised sensibly then the morning should start with the surety of mind that everything is ready for the journey to the course but unfortunately, mental setbacks can still be about, even during the journey. There are plenty of fools who drive cars these days (particularly on the N332) and they can put you in situations which could tax your patience but leaving home in plenty of time can help overcome this problem but remember that it is just as easy to laugh at these people as it is to fly into a rage. There is one particular thing which you should avoid doing just prior to play and on the days running up to a competition for that matter. You must avoid hitting golf balls just for the sake of something to do because only too often we see golfers doing this type of thing and they must understand that it is not always positive. You should never hit golf balls to pass the time unless you are prepared to practise sensibly and always hit balls following your swing sequence with the full concentration to play any shot. Do it right and you will practise successfully, do it wrong and you will practise failure.

It was back to our “Home” on an extremely hot Summer’s day, temperatures hit a high of 36 degrees and plenty of water was the order of the day, a little tip drink at least a half litre of water before you go and play as it is difficult the rehydrate quickly when playing. What was interesting though was the methods used to keep cool; the best I have seen is to soak the Bucket Style hat in water the night before and freeze it ready to wear for the next day. (Really cool!) The next is to do the same with a towel. These methods worked as some of the scores were quite good, for those who did not know about them were not so cool and the score likewise. Well done to Vistabella green staff as the course and in particular the greens is in really good condition and helped thos who could cope with the heat. PADDY’S POINT GOLF SOCIETY AT LAS COLINAS Thirty golfers turned out for the Pub Championship at Las Colinas and whilst we had an enjoyable day the course, which was undergoing annual maintenance work, was not up to the high standard which we have come to expect. However some players managed the conditions better than others. Back at the pub we enjoyed a nice meal courtesy of Rory and Hazel so once again we must thank them both as well as their excellent staff. Being the Pub Championship it was appropriate that Rory (owner and our Vice Captain) present the prizes. NTP hole 5 Dave Stockton, hole

In second place was Marleen Billen who beat Pete Dunn on a count back both having 37 pts. Goodbye Pedreno, Hello Correa At long last, things are starting to move within CD Torrevieja corridors. In addition to up and coming youngsters already committed for next season, a host of players from far flung places such as Iceland, Norway and UK, will be joining in pre season training which starts belatedly tonight (Mon 18 Jul) at Nelson Mandela stadium. One such trialist will be Icelandic 20 year old midfielder Max Eggerton. Joining his family in the local area, Max previously played for Swedish 2nd div side Halmia where he made 22 appearances last season. BUT, and this is a very sad BUT, they will not be led by manager Pedreno who is leaving the club having taken them to a mid table position last season. His replacement will be 48 year old Gabbi Correa from Montevideo in

Higon (Hospitalet), Lewis (somewhere in Seville?), Prieto (Cueta) and Sanchez (El Palmar). Us Torry fans wish you all the very best of luck for the future, and thank you for all the hard work you put in at the club. Uruguay, who has vast experience with clubs in divisions 2a, 2b and 3, such as Real Murcia, Mar Menor, Carravaca, Lorca and UCAM Murcia. Unfortunately, due to the local town hall still not handing over promised funds, senor Correa will have his hands tied regarding signing of players. Obviously last seasons players can´t wait until these funds eventually arrive (which hopefully will be in the near future), and a number have subsequently decided to move to pastures new. Adios Ruben Suarez (Torre Levante),

Although Huracan have been reprieved of a forced demotion to div 3, Segorbe have been promoted from the preferente div, meaning that there will still be 21 teams in the div 3 next season (why the Valencian FA chose this action is far from logical, but there you go!). Div 3 fixtures should be published late Jul/early Aug, with the season due to start weekend of 21/22 Aug. But before that, Torry have arranged a number of friendlies, starting with the mouth watering visit of Elche´s 1st eleven on Sat 23 Jul, ko 7.30 pm, at the Vicente Garcia Stadium.

Packed pre season scheduled for Pinatar Arena

No football centre in Spain will have more teams than Pinatar Arena this summer. The training facility situated in San Pedro del Pinatar will be hosting up to 23 different clubs in their pre season preparation which will include more than 20 friendly matches. Thor Akureyri from Iceland got pre season underway last week and will be joined in the coming days by Granada CF, FC Lorca, Valencia Mestalla, and next week the Algeria national team.
