COME & ENJOY “A The resident association of Cabo de Palos, together with the Town council of Cartagena and the support of local businesses in Cabo de Palos, has launched the first “Ruta del Pescador” (Fishermen’s Route), a gastronomical delightful tour of the restaurants, bars, beach bars and cafeterias in Cabo de Palos. Each establishment that is participating in the event that runs from June 23rd to July 2nd, will produce a tapa, with ingredients which derive from the Mediterranean Sea. The idea behind this “Fisherman’s Route” is to try and raise awareness of the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea and the delicate eco system that is threatened by mankind’s thoughtless selfish actions. The artwork on the poster, promoting this first “Ruta del Pescador” was designed by students from the local school in La Manga as part of the celebrations acknowledging the 150-year anniversary of the lighthouse in Cabo de Palos. The artwork is made entirely from objects the students found in the sea and on the local beaches. The amount of plastic contained in the artwork is saddening and depressing yet also clearly addressing a real problem that is threatening the flora and fauna of the Mediterranean Sea. According to the residents association of Cabo de Palos “ If we all can work together to acknowledge that the Sea needs to be cared for and we as inhabitants of this planet should be actively trying to stop contamination then we have achieved something.”

As usual in these types of events, the public are invited to choose their favourite Maritime Tapa and for participating they will be justly awarded with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes donated by local businesses that include meals for 2, overnight hotel stays, boat trips and much more, so remember to get your “Rutero (route card)” stamped as you make your way from bar to restaurant to beach bar to café! The “Ruta del Pescador” will culminate with a concert by the group “Los Happys” in Cabo de Palos on the promenade.

ARCHANGEL MICHAEL ...... The Mighty Warrior Angel
W
e often call Michael “”St Michael” especially since Pope Pius named him the official patron saint of police officers and soldiers. No wonder...Michael is the defender of light and goodness and his chief role is to escort fallen people away so they cannot hurt other people. Michael and his assistant angels, known as the The Band of Mercy take negatively minded people (both living and deceased) to the light of God where their minds are healed. Archangel Michael is the might warrior angel who protects the vulnerable and gives the strength and courage to those who need it. He often appears as a deep blue light or as a huge being, carrying a sword and shield. Many people have reported they have returned home and glimpsed him or angels standing by their front door on guard duty and they are inevitably filled with a wonderful feeling of safety. He is known as the protector and will look after your home, your car and your family. Remember: when you ask him to watch over you, you must have faith that he is there. This means when you invoke him to protect your home while you away, you must let him do it. If you keep worrying about it, it tells Archangel Michael that you do not trust him and he withdraws his energy. Call upon Michael whenever you feel frightened by negative sources. If you are in a crowded place populated by upset people, for instance, ask Michael to cleanse away the negative energy. In
the same vein, whenever you become burdened by worries and fears, ask Michael to cleanse your mind and heart. Angels can enter deep inside our bodies and thoughts and help us to see things from a more loving point of view. Paintings of Michael often show him holding scales of justice in his hands as he is the overseer of truth and fairness. If you feel someone is treating you unfairly, ask Michael to intervene. You´ll receive a miraculous solution, such as the other person suddenly calling with an apology or change of heart. It´s a good idea to invite Michael´s presence into a room of your house or office that has a negative energy about it. For instance, if you lived in a home previously occupied by unhappy people, ask Michael to purify the environment. I always ask Michael to clear the energy in the room or venues that I give workshops as Michael´s angelic energy creates a relaxed, loving atmosphere for the participants and me. Whenever you are upset, call upon Michael to restore harmony and peace. If you travel into areas that feel unsafe in any way, be sure to ask Michael to guide you and protect you. You can ask Him to intervene in contentious partnerships or marriages suffering from discord. Think of Michael as the protector of joy and you´ll always know when it is time to call for his help. Those of you that are fire signs......Aries, Sagittarius and Leo are automatically aligned to his energy ARCHANGEL MICHAEL ATTUNEMENTS WOULD you like to be attuned to Archangel Michael´s energy. An attunement is an initiation when you are connected directly to his energy and can call on him at any time. You will feel an increase in your energy at once and experience a great peace. Angel energy is powerful and when you connect directly to Archangel Michael, his protection is felt immediately. The attunement also means that you can work with him and make a difference to the world. The wonderful thing about the attunement is that you will then be able to attune people yourself so that wonderful energy can be spread gradually all over the world....just think about family and friends and anyone you may feel can spread this wonderful energy. This Archangel Michael attunement workshop is being held on Saturday 18th June from 2.30-5.30/6.00 at the Lotus La Marina clinic, 1st floor, Bahia Las Dunas C.C., behind Mercadona, La Marina 03177 and the cost is only 15 euros. MORE PRESSURE ON COASTAL INFRASTRUCTURE AS FURTHER CONSTRUCTION APPROVED The Council has authorised the construction of a further 270 homes on the Orihuela Costa reviving a project that was first submitted in 2003. This new development comes just 4 months after Councillor Damaso Aparicio issued 8 new licenses for the construction of 250 new properties in Lomas de Cabo Roig. The largest of the developments will see the construction of 245 homes in the urbanization Las Filipinas, a project that was first proposed in 2003. In addition, the construction of further 24 houses with pools was also approved across from Los Dolses in “El Barranco". Orihuela’s Governing Board says that the authorisation confirms the upturn in the construction sector in the Vega Baja. However many residents are concerned that the council is allowing the building stock to increase in the area too quickly adding extra pressure on the already overburdened infrastructure that continually struggles to cope as they join those many hundreds of properties that are already lying empty.

Refurbishing homes so beneficiaries had a better standard of life, ie changes to a bathroom or bedroom Wood, oil and solar panels purchased for isolated properties
At the Legion we are often asked “How much money do you raise for the Poppy Appeal and how is it spent here in Spain”? So having researched this, here is a “snap shot” of some of the ways we were able to help our beneficiaries last year. Firstly, we must thank all those generous people in our District of Spain for once again supporting the Legion. All nationalities donated to the Poppy Appeal and last year we raised over 171,000€ - a truly amazing amount. So – How was the money spent? Each year our enquiries are slightly different but here is a breakdown of just some of the help we were able to give with YOUR donations. Stair lifts Mechanical wheelchairs and scooters
There were also smaller items, gas canisters, fridges and food, as well as dental bills and help with purchase of spectacles. Our caseworkers are always busy visiting and spending time with potential beneficiaries. The definition of a beneficiary is someone who has served in the Armed Forces or their dependant(s). On some occasions we are able to “sign post” someone to another charity or organisation and this means the person can get the best possible help available. If you feel the Legion may be able to help you or a relative you can either ring 676 451 780 or email welfare.rbl.dns@gmail.com Details of the various Branches in the area are on our website www.britishlegion.org.uk/counties/spain-north or you can email us on secretary.rbl.dns@gmail.com. Come along to one of our meetings or events and meet new friends and enjoy an active social life. Peggy Wyatt, PRO The RBL - District North Spain.
But not surprisingly, according to both industry sources and the Association of Notaries, Orihuela and Torrevieja have been the two municipalities in the province that have best weathered the crisis in recent years. In last week’s council session the governing board also approved the transfer of ownership of three properties that, despite being used since 1993 to house the SAMU and Civil Protection in Orihuela Costa, have not previously been moved across.

‘Twitters from the Atlantic’ Barrie Mahoney was a head teacher and school inspector in the UK, as well as a reporter in Spain, before moving to the Canary Islands to launch and edit a new English language newspaper. He enjoys life in the sun as a columnist and author, and continues to write a series of popular novels, books for expats, as well as designing mobile apps and websites to promote the Canary Islands.
A New Expat Life or an Extended Holiday?
A
new survey of retired British expats has produced some interesting, but not surprising results. It claims that around one third of those interviewed intend to return to the UK, because they are dissatisfied with their expat experience, which includes increases in costs of living and financial concerns. During my years as an expat living in Spain and the Canary Islands, I have come across people offering a whole range of reasons for moving to another country. For most, it is a healthy new life in the sun, which it isn't if one is determined to do little more that lie on a sunbed all day, drinking excessive alcohol, with one’s skin turning to a similar colour and texture to that of a leathery hippopotamus. For others, it used to be the advantageous pound - euro exchange rate; one could live happily on the proceeds of the sale a modest family UK home, and particularly when pensions stretched unbelievably far. The cava bubble has certainly burst on this one, and parity of the pound euro rate, which happened a few years ago, may well happen again in the not too distant future, continuing to shatter many a dream of an easy life in the sun. Despite rapid advances in personal communications, not surprisingly many expats miss family and friends who are still living in the UK, as well as ‘British culture’, feeling that they do not belong. Part of the reason for becoming an expat is to embrace a Spanish, French or

Italian culture. Many expats cannot be bothered to do so, refuse to learn the language, to appreciate cultural traditions, or to mix with ‘foreign’ neighbours. Failure to integrate is the key to much expat unhappiness, as well as a desire to create ‘Little Britain’ at every opportunity. Needless to say, the locals tend get a bit fed up with what is seen as British arrogance. Sadly, the ‘What’s in it for me?’ attitude is now far more prevalent than the experiences gained from learning about and fitting into a new community and culture. The forthcoming EU referendum has opened wide the true reasons why so many expats are disenchanted about their expat experience, and many myths about the European Union are being rapidly invented. It is the threat to pensions and access to European health systems that is concentrating British expat minds wonderfully. Although I am fully in favour of remaining in the EU, and have always opposed the idea of referendums as a meaningless bureaucratic exercise designed by the ‘political suits’ to appease a generally unthinking and inarticulate electorate into believing that they have some sort of democratic control over their lives. In reality, of course, all it does is to create social and financial instability. Despite this, I am pleased that an opportunity has been created for expats to examine the true reasons behind their lives in the sun. Negative comments regularly abound about what is perceived as ‘Spanish and European bureaucracy’, conveniently forgetting of course that Britain also has its fair share of pointless bureaucracy, which Spanish and French expats find equally confusing when living in Britain. Thankfully, expats are slowly realising that life is about to change, whether or not there is a vote to stay within the EU. This is probably a good thing, and maybe those who do not feel comfortable with life in Spain will head off ‘home’, leaving those of us who do
enjoy life in this wonderful country to live in peace and harmony with our neighbours, as well as within the European family of nations. It is so important that those setting out on the expat adventure do not simply regard it as an extended holiday and that they do their homework before setting off. There is still hope for the British expat, since the survey also found that younger expats, aged 25 to 35, are increasing and now make up 27 per cent of all British expats. As disenchanted expats finally head off back to Gatwick with their hopes and dreams of a new life in the sun shattered, hopefully the younger generation will adopt a more intelligent and enlightened approach to being a contented and fulfilled European expat. Piping in a Golden Age
Following the very successful concert on May 7th when Crescendo International Choir joined with Chivenor Military Wives, not only was an amazing ₏4,000 shared between the two choirs but an additional allocation of money raised via the grand raffle and the bucket collection showing the full appreciation of the packed house having enjoyed the wonderful concert. The golden wedding celebrations of Stuart & Maureen Forsyth on the 4th June commenced with them listening to some of their favourite Scottish tunes played on the bagpipes. Stuart was a founder member of The Torrevieja Pipes & Drums along with Barry Waddington and Charlie Wallace until 3 years ago when he had to resign through ill health. Barry was delighted to play for his old friends on this special occasion.

But for us normal users who do not use Skype often or download huge programs off the internet, 2 GB is plenty for you and the family to go on line for a month, no expensive contract, just the initial payment for your HOTSPOT of 69.00 €, then whenever you want to use it switch on for instant Internet day and night, no aerials, no wires, it is rechargeable and a family of four can all be on line at the same time using different machines. But even more important is that it works anywhere in the World using a locally sourced sim card. The one here in Spain is with Lebara or another operator who supplies these sim cards, it will last for 1 month, then you recharge it at Fowof or a local dealer to where you live, it takes 2-3 minutes for you to be up and running. So if you spend say 3 months here each year, you get Internet via Wi-Fi and after the purchase price your only cost is 15€ a month, fantastic value. Remember whenever the HOTSPOT is in range of your phone it will also have Internet, carry it with you and you will always be online. Book those important Airfares, use Google translate, send emails or Whatsapps (for free) to friends telling them about the great weather here. Ask Tasia or Anne in the Shop they will explain all the things it can do plus the money you will save. There are alternatives i.e. putting internet on your phone but that only gives you one machine, the HOTSPOT will do the same but for the whole family. Even if you live in one of the bad areas for Internet reception, like Sucina or Roda, the HotSpot does not suffer from lack of or a bad signal. But Always ask in store to make sure the item you are buying is suitable for your needs. A HOTSPOT in a house can normally be used from any room in the house or the garden, anyone who has to get up early to get to a Wi-Fi café or

games, but he had never switched them off! So the poor machine was running about 12 programs, after she started closing the open programs the machine gave a sigh of relief, but in his quest to open every program on the Internet, he had also collected over 2,000 viruses in his short term as owner of the machine. After an hour his machine was back to normal and following some instruction from Tasia on the use of his machine, he was ready to use it, with his new found knowledge of his computer, he will now close his programs, or even switch the computer off every now and again, to give it a rest.
I am just amazed with this latest advance in technology that allows everyone to access the Internet. The HotSpot, which is being sold at Fowof in the Mercadona arcade in Los Alcazares, is worth its weight in gold! If you are a resident here, or on holiday, passing through in your Campervan, and need/ want to get online, then the Hot Spot is a must! The HotSpot gives 24/7 Internet/ Wi-Fi and at only 15€ per month on a pay as you go contract you can’t go wrong. For 15€ a month you get 2 Gb, which is plenty for a normal user to get information off the internet, or to read your emails, make free calls anywhere in the world, send whatsapp messages, even download a few games, but remember Skype and watching TV using a HOTSPOT is not always practical, with any video downloaded through the Internet the memory it uses is not financially viable, so for large downloads or watching your favourite program, go to your local bar, their Wi-Fi is free to you, so make use of it! With 1 coffee you can download your favourite TV Shows to watch later.

similar will benefit from having the facility 24/7, and if your phone runs out of battery the HOTSPOT will recharge it for you! A great offer at present at FOWOF is a Printer that can print, copy, fax and scan, it comes complete with cartridges, just fill with paper and away you go, it loads itself on your computer with ease and then you are ready to Print your Boarding passes, or print off your Spanish lessons, or copy your passport, driving license etc., The cost is incredibly only 59€, or for 10€ more, get the Wi-Fi model, no wires just plug in and anyone in the house can use it. Paper at Fowof for your printer is only 3.90€ a ream, so you could write a book without breaking the bank and it is good quality paper. Tasia likes keeping records of machines that have many viruses that are brought in for cleaning to try and ascertain patterns and causes. This week a gentleman arrived with a nearly brand new machine that was locked, the screen was on but nothing could be moved, the mouse was asleep, the keyboard would not operate; at first glance this looked like a major problem, but within minutes of it being put on the repair bench, Tasia had found the problem. The customer had owned the machine for 5 weeks, in that time he had looked at many programs, gone on line, even played several
Going back to Printers, a lady came in who when trying to photocopy her Residencia on three occasions, she said the document came out blank? I was trying to think what the reason might be, when Tasia found that the lady had been putting the paper in face up! I asked how she guessed that was the problem and she said it has happened many times before, so she always asks that first! Now June has arrived and for residents, but especially for vistitors from the UK, Fowof have many offers on Phones, Laptops and Tablets. These can cost a fraction of those in the UK but also remember ALL Fowof’s phones are open/unlocked, this means they will accept any suppliers sim card, with no adjustment and as most phones have the facility for 2 sims, you can have for instance a Voaphone and another from a different supplier, so you get the best of both worlds. As an example, a sim card from Lebara here in Spain offering 1GB of internet, 8 hours of calls to the UK, Free calls to Lebara mobiles costs just 15.00 a month but ask in the shop and see what is best for your situation. Remember if you have the Internet you can phone the UK for free using Whatsapp or message them, once you have an Internet connection you are then able to save money. What happened to the abolishing of Roaming charges, this seems to have got lost in the Bureaucracy of Europe, one day they will stop Manufacturers unlocking their phones so you can only use their service through your phone! At Fowof ALL the phones for sale are open/unlocked and you can use any sim card from any country in a phone purchased at Fowof, the savings can be in the hundreds for holidaymakers. So many holidaymakers use their phones from the UK here only to be landed with a £500 to £600 bill on their return. When all you need to do is purchase a Spanish sim card and throw it away at the end of your visit, no contract charge just pay for what you use. A normal voucher purchased at Fowof will cost 15.00€ and give you internet access, 6 hours plus of calls to the UK plus free calls to Spain! It makes sense to call in to Fowof they can explain the best deal for you. See their main advert on page 3.

POSTAGE NEEDED FOR OVERSEAS VOTERS AT THE EU REFERENDUM
Postal votes being returned by overseas voters for the EU Referendum use the International Business Reply Service (IBRS). This service is commonly used for international mail and does not require any additional postage to be affixed. The Electoral Commission are aware that a very small number of voters may have been incorrectly informed that the postal service in a handful of locations in Europe cannot accept IBRS items. Royal Mail has confirmed that IBRS is accepted across all international posts. It is working closely with postal operators to ensure acceptance of postal votes. Voters are advised that once a ballot is in the postal system
SUPER
SPEEDER ARRESTED
Guardia Civil Officers arrested a 24-year-old male driver who was caught driving at 192Km per hour along the RM-23 on the outskirts of Alhama de Murcia. The actual speed limit on that road is 100 Km per hour and as this driver was caught speeding more than 80 Km per hour over the legal limit, he was arrested and taken into custody in Totana. According to Spanish law if a driver is exceeding the limit by more than 80Km per hour it is considered a serious traffic offence and is punishable by a custodial sentence between 3 to 6 months in addition to heavy fines, community service and loss of driving license for 1 to 4 years.
(i.e. if it has been posted into a post box) it will be processed. If independant couriers are used then additional charges will apply. Overseas voters should not delay in returning their ballot pack to the UK in order for it to arrive by close of polls at 10pm, 23 June.
The driver was picked up on the radar and subsequently stopped, at the time of the arrest the 24-year-old had a female passenger in the car so therefore he could also be facing additional charges for putting others lives at risk. This is the second time this year that a “super speeder” has been arrested, back in April a driver of a luxury 4 X 4 was arrested after he was caught speeding at 240 Km per hour along the AP-7 motorway that has a 120 Km per hour speed limit. With the onset of the Spanish summer holiday season (July 1st to August 31st) the number of Police controls and speed checks will be increased in the coastal areas and along the main motorways.

DROWNING A 60-year-old man drown in La Azohía on Saturday May 28th. According to the 112 emergency response team, they received a phone call at 18.11 hours informing that a man who was swimming in the sea by the Playa de Las Palmeras was struggling to make it back to shore due to the high waves and strong current.
IN
LA AZOHÍA
Other sunbathers who were on the beach managed to pull the man to safety and immediately began CPR on the man who was unconscious. An emergency ambulance team together with the Guardia Civil arrived at the beach and continued with the efforts of the beach goers but unfortunately neither them nor the Guardia
Civil officers were able to safe the man who was later pronounced dead at the scene. The Guardia Civil reminded everyone that even if life guards are not on duty, common sense must be used and on windy days when the sea is rough, extreme caution must be taken to avoid these types of tragedies.

INFORMER GOLF At last, are we looking at an up and coming English player in the making? Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick has claimed his second European Tour title, after winning the Nordea Masters by three shots. Matt Fitzpatrick played a great round to put him in the reckoning for the Ryder Cup, at present on points he is 4th and I think he will be a great asset. Also Andy Sullivan is not far behind so we could have 5 UK players in the Ryder Cup, Rory representing NIR plus 4 from England, not very representative of Europe but would be good to see England give a good shot. A brilliant display, the 21-year-old from Sheffield began the day with a five-shot advantage and held his nerve to card a final round of 71 at Bro Hof Slott near Stockholm. In the big other competition a winner who I can honestly say I have heard little of never won, yet after drawing for the lead and playing 2 further holes he won, it is always nice to see a player who is not usually in with the leaders suddenly come good. In the Memorial Trophy William Mc Girt won the Memorial Trophy with a round of 273, 70- 68- 64- 71 beating the leader Jon Curran in a 2 hole play off. Rory Mc Illroy NIR was joint 4th of 4 with the top or rather only English player Luke Macdonald in 68th “ouch” I would imagine this is one Luke will want to forget, the only thing that nearly changed the scorecards was the sudden rain while the leaders were approaching the 16th giving of rain, hail, leaving the leaders in the clubhouse looking to a few bad holes putting them back in the frame however it was not to be, though both dropped shots but still won by 2. England has a proud heritage in golf but we seem to be slipping down the order although Willett did well winning the Masters but then missed the cut in his next two matches! Hopefully we can soon start to see in the future some good amateurs coming to join the professionals representing England! Still as I reported in the paper last issue many players are swerving round the Olympics, now though I see no reason for it to be an Olympic sport it will be a shame if countries are not represented or are forced to turn out second, third or
further choices. I am still a great advocate of returning to amateurs only being in the line up, surely the money these people earn, not only in golf, makes them hungry to win or at least compete, this does not follow in the Olympics. The same scenario is played out in Tennis 4-5 players Djokovic, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, and if he is fit Spain’s one time no 1 Rafael Nadal, one of these will be champion because they win between them all the tournaments. Though I realise they are the best but it makes for a boring match when you know who will win and looking at the past year Novak Djokovic will win if he attends. Whilst going through the sports I came across the top ten Female players, well now this is different, everyone of them could be a page 3 model and most are already on the front covers of the top glossy magazines, great looks and good at their sport, plus at present none have mentioned not going to the Olympics! I think after seeing the pages I will now start watching women's Tennis; who cares who wins? Back to the Golf with the heat bearing down on us we played 18 holes at La Serena, anybody thought about getting a franchise to take out cold drinks etc. to golfers who like me was desperate for a drink and my poor bottle of water would have made tea better than quench my thirst when I went to drink it. A good business could be had, selling cold drinks; just a golf cart and a cold box is all that would be needed and golfers would see it like an Oasis in the desert. I am sure certain courses do it but it must be their day off when I play! I might start this because I would do better than the game I played, I could put it down to heat but my game was even worse in the winter! Every week we have many calls about price, but every time I bring it up I am told of the societies, cheap rounds in the evening, Lunchtime specials etc. Now I am a first thing in the morning player, that way it is a bit cooler than later in the day; I agree there are specials but visitors are not aware of them, so they pay full price. I played a course near Sucina the cost to me and my friends was 28€, the pair in front of us paid 58€ each, double the price! They did not complain at the time but afterwards we
sat near them having coffee and they then asked why coffee was so expensive there after the price they paid to play, the answer is captive audience sadly. Talking about coffee, as I play most courses I have acquired knowledge on this subject and I have to say the coffee at La Serena is the best I have tasted and the price is reasonable, plus it is a great place to sit and watch what's going on, out of most of the clubs I rate theirs as the best. One thing I would say, the goods the pro shops sell are usually horrendous but on a day out some time ago to Camposol the course was OK but the shop was like a bargain basement, great prices and their food and drink were local bar prices, nice seating area and good service, just in case you are that way on a Sunday they do lunch but you have to book, the reason is good food at sensible prices. Living in Los Alcazares if you are in need of some entertainment for the family, take a trip to GOLF DELUXE on the Poligono Industrial on the Torre Pacheco road. Golf Deluxe is an American themed Putting course through Mountains and water features, 18 holes of fun and it is great for all ages.
The prices are great too, for just 13€ you can play 18 holes and have a nice meal! Helen, the manager is Swedish she always has a smile and you get a great welcome, a round can take any time you like, there is no rush; we took about two hours to get round the course with lots of bar breaks in-between. Golf Deluxe opens at 10am till about 7 depending whose still playing and it is definitely worth a visit, the family and your friends will all enjoy it. Just in case you have not been abroad in the last few weeks, I returned from the UK to San Javier airport to find not just the one security customs control box but three new ones! Does this mean at last they have realized that Corvera is unlikely to open in the near future? In addition to the improvements there is also a new bar and another shop that has opened in the terminal. Surely they are not renting these for short term? I personally hope that Airlines that had been worried about booking flights will now start to plan with the future set at San Javier; this is a nice easy Airport to travel through and would have been a great loss to local business.
