15 Torrevieja is preparing for the opening of one of the most ambitious urban projects in its recent history, as work on the port and the new Paseo del Mar leisure complex enters its final phase.

ENTERS FINAL STAGE

Mayor Eduardo Dolon and businessman Enrique Riquelme visited the site last Thursday, to inspect progress on the major redevelopment of the town’s port area. The project, which has involved an investment of more than e100 million, is expected to open in stages over the coming weeks. The private concessionaire has invested around e61 million, while Torrevieja City Council has contributed approximately e40 million to the wider transformation of the waterfront. The new Paseo del Mar leisure centre could open at the end of May or early June, with the surrounding urbanisation works expected to be completed by the end of June. Some additional works will continue during the summer. The development includes 27 commercial units, with restaurants, family leisure facilities and modern cinemas. It is expected to create around 400 direct jobs, with priority given to local recruitment. Mayor Dolon said the project would help Torrevieja reconnect with its maritime identity by combining historic port elements with new public spaces designed for residents and visitors. One of the most symbolic parts of the scheme is the recovery of Muelle Minguez, where the original structure is being restored. The area will include a partially flooded platform recalling its historic layout, a large illuminated ornamental fountain and a digital museum space explaining the evolution of the port and Torrevieja’s fishing heritage. The wider seafront project also includes a new public square of more than 4,600 square metres near the old customs area, a 170-metre pedestrian promenade beside the fishing quay, rest areas, children’s zones and a major increase in landscaped space.
