The Extinguished Fire Fighters Club, based on the Costa Blanca, gave a contribution to two charities on the 1st June this week. The charities were "The Torrevieja Stroke Support Group" and "Help at Home - Costa Blanca" Representatives from both charities were pleased to receive 200 Euros each at our Wednesday meeting. The EFFC meet every first Wednesday of the month at the "Green Baize Club" in Quesada, near Torrevieja at 15.00. If you ever worked for any part of the Fire Service in the UK you will be most welcome to join us.

Orihuela Costa Spring Clean The councillor with Major David Vicente Vives of the Special Operations Command in Cabo Roig
O
rihuela´s councillor for the coast, Sofia Álvarez, has this week explained some of the behind the scenes activities that have been taking place in order to prepare the beaches of Orihuela for the summer season. For the last week and a half, continuing into June, a night time patrol, has been accompanying the waste collection crews around the coastal zone, cleaning the bins once they are emptied. As part of this project, every single large waste bin is set to be cleaned. During the day, another team has been working their way through the streets removing weeds from along the roadside, followed by another group who are treating the area with chemicals to slow down their return. This project will be continuing for a 4-week period. A number of car parks have also had a makeover, including the ones at the Ecumenical centre and the medical centre. On Friday, a deal was signed and approved with a company who will be clearing seaweed from the beaches. Not only that, for the first time, according to Álvarez, this 51,000 euro contract puts companies on standby to respond immediately and remove any future seaweed build up before it becomes a problem. Álvarez explained her surprise that this facility has never been in place in Orihuela before, although one explanation could be that the seaweed is often left in order to oxygenate the water which improves the overall quality. It had been previously said that this was a requirement of the Blue Flag standard in order to ensure environmental protection. The sea itself has also been having a deep clean. Trainee military divers from Special Operations Command (MOE) in Cabo Roig, keen to practice their subaquatic skills, have been utilised on dive expeditions to recover rubbish and waste from the
seabed. The 24 divers, commanded by Major David Vicente Vives, have been working all last week and through the weekend to achieve this. Meanwhile, the reparation work at Cabo Roig is set to start this week, with a maximum duration of 7-weeks before the closed walkways will be reopened to allow passage to the beaches once more. Finally, on the subject of the beaches, the contract to provide lifeguard services was officially published in the State Bulletin on Friday, now giving companies 15 days to submit their proposals for the 480,000 euro tender, before another week passes in which the tender envelopes are opened, and so the lifeguard service will not be present on the beaches for at least another 3 weeks. The service was supposed to start on June 15th and run until the same date in September. Álvarez has confirmed that whatever the actual start date is, the contract will still run for the same period, ending on the same date three months later. Álvarez has also explained that this contract will only be awarded for a period of two years, as during that time it is hoped that the Emergency Coordination Centre will be completed and so the future contracts will be much cheaper as there will be no need to provide additional services such as ambulances, as they will already be present on the coast.

THIRTY GRAND BILL FOR MASTERCHEF
T
he cost to the public purse for Santa Pola to appear on the TV show MasterChef has been put at 29,636.88 euro by the town hall. However, although this seems like a considerable bill to pay for simply allowing a TV show to be filmed in the town, the tourism department consider it money well spent, as their own website has now had over 4 million visitors, which they hope will be converted into real tourists who will visit Santa Pola and spend their money, thus bringing more money back than was invested. The town hall also consider the bill to be a huge saving on the costs of having a 30 second commercial broadcast on national TV, which would have cost around 35,000 euro, plus production.
The town hall is also keen to point out that the money was already allocated to the tourism budget and was saved by them not attending tourism fairs and exhibitions. Accommodating the cast and crew for free in local hotels, providing the food and resources for the show to be produced, is all part of the deal struck between the producers and the town hall, offering a glimpse of life in the fishing centric town to the rest of Spain, although some of the hotels and restaurants who provided their facilities for free are less than happy that they didn´t even get a mention, let alone credit. The good news is though, as a result of the show, another TV company is set to record in Santa Pola, this time at no cost to the tax payer.
Call for school plans to be brought forward The Mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, Ignacio Ramos, was in Valencia last week where he met with representatives from the Ministry for Education, to discuss the possibility of bringing forward the works for the town’s new school to the second half of 2019 The mayor presented the report prepared by the Schools inspector Santiago Iniguez, which highlights the urgency and the need for a second school in the municipality. Ramos said that he would like to see the work brought forward to the second half of 2019. He said that the plans are already drafted and the start of construction for the new centre can easily fit into the new timeline.

Gastronomic Excellence on the Costa
During the coming week food lovers around Orihuela and the Orihuela Costa will be able to celebrate the very first Gastronomic SICTED (a culinary promotion supported by the Ministry of Tourism), at seven restaurants located in both the city and on the coast.

Each of the restaurant visits will also include a number of food and drink related activities such as wine or beer tasting as well as live music and in this first edition of the event Fernando de Loaces, the Chairman of the Gastronomic Association of the Mediterranean will give a talk on the history of salted fish. There will also be an exhibition of pastry at the close. The details of the event were presented last week by the Councillor for Tourism, Sofia Alvarez, who said that Orihuela is now taking steps to position itself as a major tourist destination of reference, and to improve the tourist's stay with such events as will encourage him to return to the area in the future.
Each of these eateries has earned a seal of quality from the local tourist board which now wants to highlight their gastronomic abilities as some of the most notable food establishments in Valencia. During the week 13 to 18 June each of the restaurants will be visited by representatives of the SICTED Organisation when each of their speciality menus will also be served to members of the public. If you do plan on attending, however, it would be wise to book in advance as places are limited. The cost of each of the menu’s is 38 euros per head and in attracting such distinguished visitors the intention is to energize the locality as a tourist destination and to make tourists that are passing through the municipality aware of the fine food that the region has to offer. Each day the representatives will focus on one of the restaurants, starting on Monday June 13 at the restaurant ‘El Tapeo de Agus’ in Orihuela. On Tuesday 14 June they will move to Campoamor and the restaurant 'La Barraca'; Wednesday 15 June the Restaurant 'Hotel Palacio de Tudemir' in Orihuela; Thursday 16 June Restaurant 'Alejandro’s in La Zenia, on Friday June 17 Campoamor’s Restaurant 'Las Villas'. The whole area was a mass of pink as hundreds of supporters, of many different nationalities, and all suitably attired in their pink outfits, walked out together to raise money for the AECC cancer charity's research and early detection programme. The privilege of taking part in the event cost participants a donation of just 5 euro but with the added attraction of charity and a healthy number of market stalls as well as day-long entertainment from Sunshine FM and many of the Costa Blanca's best acts, it proved once again to be one of the area’s very best entertainment and social events. There was a record turnout of
walkers, said to be in excess of the 500 people who took part last year, when an amazing €13,322.11 was raised, and although the start was rather staggered as the walkers queued up for their free bottles of water, former Premier League referee Mark Halsey got them underway, led by Maria herself, at about 10.45. Following the walk there was a full afternoon of superb entertainment supported once again by Sunshine FM and compeered by local celebrity Stevie Spit. He was joined on stage by Dan Davy, David John, the Abba Girls, Gemma Bennett, Samantha Curtis, Rebecca Holt, Jonny Lea, Kyle Burgassi, Nikki Gayle, Richie Alexander and Janelle Gaskell. There was even a mystery guest said to be appearing late in the afternoon but at the time of going to press the name of he or she was still.....a mystery!
But the event itself was most certainly not as one of the biggest and best charity events held annually on the Costa Blanca raised many more thousands of euros towards this extremely worthwhile cause. Maria was delighted at the turnout which she described as: “just getting better and better every year”. She said ”I was overjoyed to see so many walkers, all entering into the spirit of the event and thankyou so very much to everyone who took part. Council halts Punta Prima Construction Madrid builder Gomendio, the company responsible for the construction of 185 luxury flats along the seafront at Punta Prima, has been ordered to cease all building work on the site immediately because of it’s introduction of unauthorised modifications at the development. Torrevieja Planning Department ordered the suspension of the construction work at all four apartment blocks because of the developer failed to get final approval from the current council to begin the work. However it is thought that the stoppage will only
be temporary because the overall building plan had been approved by the previous PP administration. It is thought that the company will face a penalty for starting the work early and will not be able to resume construction until all of the revised permits have been authorised. The buildings are being erected on one of the few remaining building plots available on the coastline on the border of Torrevieja with the Orihuela Costa in Punta Prima close to the beach at Cala Piteras with a minimum sale price of 234,000 euros.

Playa Flamenca Fundraiser success There seems no end to the number of charity days that are currently being organised by the kind people of the region the most recent of which was held at Flamenca Beach last Sunday afternoon (29 May) in aid of both the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal and the Paul Cunningham Nurses. The event, organised by local fundraiser Eddie Coleman, was attended by yet another bumper crowd including the Councillor for Tourism and Beaches Sofia Alvarez. During her opening address she highlighted the devotion made to such ‘good causes’ by members of the local community as well as complimenting the
enthusiasm of the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums who she said seem to attend just about every one. She also welcomed the two Chelsea Pensioners, Skippy Teasdale and Wayne Campbell, both members of the Orihuela Costa Branch of the RBL, who regularly travel out to attend such events from UK, completely at their own expense. She said how pleased she was to see them at Playa Flamenca, once again supporting a fundraising event in the local community. The afternoon’s entertainment was provided by Sunshine FM and a dedicated band of entertainers who once again gave of their time absolutely free.

Debra to benefit from Costa's top choir
T
he Costa's leading popular choral group, Melody Makers International, will be presenting the latest in their increasingly successful series of shows on Saturday 25th June in the exotic surroundings of the Orihuela Costa Resort Hotel at La Zenia. The two shows, at 2pm and 8pm, are entitled 'A Century of Popular Songs' and will include smash hit songs Sent from my iPad Starting with a fabulous medley of 1920s favourites, the show moves through the decades and will include a Wartime selection (1940s), the fabulous music of the 60s and 70s (Bowie, Beatles, Beach Boys etc.) and, of course, Abba. The second half of the concert will concentrate on the remaining decades of the century, bringing us up to the present day with the music of Beyonce, Adele, Barbra Streisand and Celine Dion. There is something for everyone in this packed variety show, including the eagerly-awaited comedy duets for which
these shows are renowned, all accompanied by a professional band from the UK and conducted by local maestro Nigel Hopkins. For the second time this year Melody Makers are supporting the children's charity Debra - the Butterfly Children, for children with the horrible condition EB which leaves them horribly scarred, or even worse, which can result from the merest touch of their skin. The Melody Makers concert in January raised €3,000 for the charity, and choir director Nigel Hopkins is keen to match that magnificent figure with this concert. Tickets for the shows - priced again at €10 (afternoon) and 12€ (evening) are available from La Ponderosa Gift Shop at La Zenia, as well as The CardPlace at both Punta Prima and Benimar. HOW TO NEGOTIATE ROUNDABOUTS If you are unsure about the correct way to negotiate roundabouts, here are some simple rules to help you enter and exit roundabouts safely and in the right lane.
APPROACHING ROUNDABOUTS It’s important to remember to give way to traffic already on the roundabout. If the roundabout is outside urban areas of towns or cities, keep right. If the roundabout is in a built-up area inside a town or city and the lanes are clearly marked, you should use the lane that best corresponds to the exit you need to take.
LEAVING ROUNDABOUTS You might remember when, back in late April, we reported on the disappearance of over 10,000 euros from the Romualdo Ballester infant and junior school funds in Los Altos. That money is unlikely ever to be recovered but sadly, what it did at the time, was to take away the funding from the children and many of their school activities, funding that many of them and of course their teachers and parents, had worked so hard to accumulate. One of the many annual activities that looked as though it would have to be shelved was the overnight activity excursion which fifth and sixth year primary pupils at the school traditionally enjoyed prior to moving up to Secondary school. But not to be beaten, members of the Parents' Association (AMPA) decided that as the funding had been raised once, they could do it all again and that’s exactly what they put in hand. Many members of the local community quickly rallied round and on 7 May a charity day was held at the Abbey Tavern with all monies raised pledged toward rebuilding the school fund. And what a fabulous result they all achieved, managing to raise the amazing sum of 3670€. So the children will now have their holiday in addition to which many other debts are able to be paid. There were of course a larger number of benefactors who assisted either in the planning of the event or on the day but of especial mention, Mrs Joan Metcalf who kindly donated personally 400€ and the Abbey tavern who provided the venue and also donated a further 300€.

This causes the most confusion amongst drivers. Which lane to choose? Why do I get beeped at if I’m in the right lane? Drivers must exit roundabouts from the right hand lane, because the only way to leave the roundabout is by turning right. This does-
n’t mean we always have to enter the roundabout from the right hand lane. It depends on the exit we need to take. However this simple rule, in practice, can be more complex. Let us see some examples. 1st EXIT RIGHT Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate and exit roundabout. CONTINUING STRAIGHT ON (e.g. 2nd EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD) Enter roundabout keeping to right hand side lane. Stay in lane until exit is reached. Indicate prior to exit and leave roundabout. TURNING LEFT OR CHANGING DIRECTION (e.g. 3rd OR FINAL EXIT) Enter roundabout keeping to left hand side lane. Stay in lane until you have passed the exit before your turn off, then change lane by indicating right and giving other road users sufficient time to anticipate your manoeuvre. Don’t forget that drivers circulating in the outside lanes have priority, so use your mirrors to ensure you are not blocking them as you change lanes.

O
ne of my first introductions to expat life in Spain was a meeting with the then British Consul when I started working as a newspaper reporter in the Costa Blanca.
“Of course, the Brits come here to die,” was one of the more profound statements fired at me, as I was furiously scribbling notes in my new reporter’s notebook. After this cursory introduction to the life of the expat, I began my daily routine of reporting about expats at work and at play. I met accountants who had become plumbers, plumbers who had become estate agents, as well as those who had no intention of ever working again, if they could help it. Life was good, and at that time the pound-euro exchange rate meant that many expats who had sold their modest homes in the UK could live a life of relative luxury in the sun. For many, their days rapidly slipped into a booze-filled stupor, with life revolving around the many British bars that had been opened by established expats. Barbecues, eating outdoors, and late balmy nights enjoying a drink or two with friends were all possible. Despite this initial impression of a relaxed, carefree lifestyle, I soon found an undercurrent of activity and breathless excitement that I had never before experienced in the UK. I found myself being invited to performances given by the members of a local tap dancing club. These elderly ladies attended a twiceweekly tap dancing class, with the eldest member being in her
nineties. Many had never danced, let alone tap-danced before, yet performed with the agility and confidence of dancers several decades younger. Ballroom, ballet, as well as traditional Spanish dancing were all on offer too. I met Brits, Germans and Scandinavians demonstrating a dedication to animal welfare that would melt the heart of the most hardened expat. Over time, their hard work proved to have a hugely positive impact upon attitudes to stray dogs and cats in the area. Walking groups, cycling, chess and stamp collecting clubs flourished, together with golf, bowls and that strange new addition to the sporting repertoire of the expat Brit, petanca. I found it hard to keep track of all the clubs and activities that were on offer. It was as if a strange new liberation was taking place for the British retired expat. Gone were the endless hours of watching football on television, reading the tabloids and mowing the lawn, if the weather was reasonable, and replaced by a new carefree, outdoor lifestyle where most things are possible. What struck me most of all, was the health and rigour of so many elderly people. I met many who had been suffering from a variety of disabling physical conditions, as well as depression in the UK, who were suddenly mostly pain free, with many no longer on medication.My mind returns to those first introductory comments from the British Consul some years ago. Maybe the Brits do retire to Spain to die, but most are determined to have a ball before they go! Villa Martin Plaza Charity Day What a great day we had last Sunday! As usual, Stevie Spit, Kylie and their amazing team put on a fantastic day of entertainment and fun. There was a large crowd enjoying the music and fine food provided by the local bars and restaurants, and together with his wonderful band of volunteers Stevie raised an amazing 4,000 euros for charity on the day.
This will be split equally between the Elche Children's Care Home and Little Pods animal charity. On behalf of the children we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to Stevie and everyone who worked so hard on the day to raise such a fantastic amount of money for these two worthwhile charities.

SPAIN BOWLS ON BBC’S ‘THE ONE SHOW’
Members of the Nationals Bowls team flew back to the United Kingdom last week at the expense of the BBC. The occasion was the shooting of a short clip at Clacton Bowls Club for the One Show to be featured on BBC 1 next Wednesday evening.
Lin Miller, AnnMarie Stevenson, Drew Gerrard all accompanied National Director Bob Donnelly to Clacton with the foursome playing an Essex Select, while Presenter Alex Riley quizzed them on the implications of the EU referendum later in the month. Referendum aside Bob Donnelly said he has been delighted by the favourable press currently being enjoyed by Spain Bowls which in recent weeks has been extensively featured in the UK’ Times and Guardian newspapers as well on a variety of UK Radio channels, the BBC and the Heute in Europa programme on German station ZDF. Donnelly said that with the recent National Championship being sponsored by Línea Directa the last few weeks have been particularly positive for the sport here in Spain. We had a close match, but in the end the home advantage took us to a 5 rinks to 1 win, with an appreciable overall shots advantage, a good result against talented opponent. Luis Hercules and yes, it is getting warmer and I just feel a little more smug as I view the UK weather forecast. We were in good company and I am sure we all enjoyed the match, we came away with just the one rink and a draw, but several could have gone either way. On our rink we went quite quickly to 3-18 down but pulled back to 22-24, and any one shot, any where in the match could have changed the result. But that of course applies to all matches, it isn’t the last shot that wins or loses the rink, it can be any of them with just a touch of luck. Sometimes your shot trickles through the gap, on other occasions they touch a wood in the head and

The Wasps were playing the reverse fixture against Mazarron Miners, and they reversed the score line from the away match. First in line Pat Moore/Roy Thompson/Drew Gerrard with a terrific score of 36 - 8. Sheila Chorley/Irene Mangan/Sue Jordan 25 – 11 and Jean Hepehi/Brian Gardiner/Brian Harman 21 – 10 helped a win on three rinks.With the help of these good scores La Siesta managed to win the overall shots 127 - 83. 8 points La Siesta 6 points Mazarron. Today the Hornets were away to El Rancho, to play their reverse fixture. It was a hot and windy morning and as always a tough game at El Rancho. There were some close games that could have gone either way; we only managed to win on one rink so the points were 2 –12 and the shots 84 -110. Our winning rink was Jean James, Irene Laverick & John Clarke. The Ladies 4 wood pairs commenced this week with a match against San Miguel. Our Home Team Ann Marie Stevenson/Pat Harman played against strong opposition and unfortunately lost 8 - 23. Our away Team Sue Mahomet & Sue Jordan managed to keep hold of the lead and win 23 / 18. Shots 31 / 41, 2 points to La Siesta 4 points to San Miguel. A disappointing result in the VCL fixture against Emerald Isle Dukes. Overall score78-92.The points 2 to La Siesta 10 to Emerald Isle. Our Triples Team of Sue Mahomet, Sue Jordan and Jean Cooper provided the ray of light with a 22-10 win. Sheila Chorley fought hard in the Ladies Singles and lost narrowly by 19 shots to 21. The Wasps back in SABA action again with a home match against 2nd placed La Marina Pilots and what a result for the Wasps who “stung” the Pilots winning on all rinks. Pueblo Brava Petanca Pueblo Bravo Petanca club held the Club Championships last week, there was a slightly smaller turn out than usual as several of the Spanish members were unavailable this year due to other commitments. Competition between the teams was keen and at the end of two excellent days play there were four teams within a couple of points of each other, so the last days play was going to be intense and exciting. On the final day it grew closer as at one point three teams were equal, but at the end one team got ahead by one point leaving the other two teams to playoff in what was a very close and exciting match for 2nd and 3rd. Rojales Ayuntamiento had kindly sponsored the competition by providing trophies and the councillor for sport Pedro Llopis came and presented the trophies. Goyos in Quesada provided T shirts and at the end of the championships everyone had enjoyed a week of competitive and friendly petanca. The winning team was Pedro, Ron and Rudy.

Alfies Golf Society at Mar Menor 35 members and guests from Alfie's GS travelled to the lovely Mar Menor GC for the May meeting and the inaugural playing for the Geoff Thompson perpetual Trophy. The course was in very good condition, the greens were true and a wee bit slow and as a course that suits all standards of golfer scoring of points had to be well earned. By Doug Wright. We started the week with a Better Ball which was won with an excellent score of 47 pts. by the pairing of Brian Dent and John Dobson. Runners up with a score that would normally win with 46 pts. were Rod Doel and Mike Chapman who couldn't believe they had not won. It was time for another Medal on Wednesday which was the last one in the 4 from 6 competition run over the first 6 months of the year. Tom Hardie's 75 was, although not enough to get in the money on the day, sufficient to win the overall trophy. The day's winners were: Cat 1. 1. Brian Townend 70, 2. Lindsay Forbes 73, 3. Olga Douglas 74. Cat 2. 1. Mike Mahony 74, 2. Marlen Bellen, 3. Terry Cullen 77. There were no 2s on the day so there is a rollover in the 2s Club. Friday's main event was the much awaited final of the Singles Knockout between Tom Hardie and myself, Doug Wright. There was an extra edge to this game with Tom and I buggy partners and close friends. The final lived up to it's billing in a fantastic match which went to the wire with Tom winning 1 up on the last. We worked out afterwards that our Better Ball would have been 49 pts which is tremendous golf. Congratulations again to Tom. The remainder of the members played a Texas Scramble which was won by the team of Nick Campbell, Marja Oldenzel and Marleen Bellen with 59.05. Runners up with half a shot more were Geoff Biggerstaff, Bryan Neal, Ken Robertson and Rod Doel.
A Day of Two Halves for SAMM Sailors Having cancelled the racing on May 22nd due to a Dragon Boat event at CTD the competitors arrived bright and early for the rescheduled racing on May 29th only to find that the wind had decided not to turn up. Despite this seven boats came to the start at 11.15am in the hope that the forecast 8 knots would make a showing. But no, and the first group away, the day boats Conny, Sirocco and Mistral took 5 minutes to drift across the line but, 10 minutes later when the dinghies, Shoestrings Dos, Tres and Quarto plus the diminutive Rosita started there was a zephyr of a breeze from the west. This built to about 8 knots and backed south by the end of the four laps which took around 1 hour 20 minutes to complete. A fine display of sailing by the crew of Conny in such light conditions gave her a win by just 89 seconds. During the break the wind came in with a
vengeance, blowing easterly 12 to 15 knots, only to swing back south by the 2.15pm start and gusting even higher, kicking up a short chop almost 1 meter high. Rosita had wisely decided not to sail and the conditions proved too much for Dos who capsized twice and retired. Tug Wilson and Pat Fleck in Tres were flying round the course and on line for a win when they also went over at the gibe mark on lap five. They were soon up but lost enough time to push them back to last. Mistral also retired after lap five. The six laps took on average only 46 minutes to complete. The result, another fine win by Robert Hudson and Terry Cook (who was competing in his first ever SAMM race) on Conny. Next race day June 5th. The weather was fine and a good days bowling was enjoyed by everyone, the final result was a good win by Greenlands. Total shots for - 112. total shots against - 91. Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club Sponsored by Avalon On May 28th and 29th we had a lovely weekend of bowling with Indalo at Monte Mar. We played a game of 18 ends on Saturday afternoon and we were 7 shots ahead. In the evening we went to dinner at Maritaos where we had plenty of good food, wine and lots of laughter. On Sunday morning we played another 18 ends and we won the match. So the cup stays with Monte Mar this year. Well done to all those who took part. Monday 30th May The Torros were away to Emerald Isle Victors. We won on just two rinks and lost on shots 119 to 90. The result was Emerald Isle 10 points Monte Mar 2 points. TMGS Back at La Serena It’s been some time since our last visit to La Serena, known to most of our members as “the watery grave”. If you have played it before then you should know where NOT to hit it! But then again the little white thing has a mind of its own and goes where it wants to which on this course is usually the agua. The course was in good condition for this time of year (hollow tinning already done a month or so ago) the weather was not too hot and just a slight breeze so apart from the water it was a perfect day for golf. As almost always when we visit this course the format of the day is a “team game” today it was a 2 ball better ball Stableford which really takes the pressure of each of the team members. We should not have worried! The scores were amazing for this format on this course. Sandra Twentyman and partner Fred Parkinson needed 46 points to take 3rd place, 2nd place went to Roger (I’ve missed it again by 1 point) Nilsen and Glen Gooch, top spot was won by Mick Kennedy and John Hettrick with 48 points. The best visiting team was Patrick and Matias
(Vikings of course) with 41 points. The N.T.P. Competition results, Hole 3 Visitor Danny Boyling, hole 9 Patrick, hole 15 Glen Gooch and hole 17 John Whitaker. Plaza GS 0ur second game at TPGS took us down south to Roda. 19 players enjoyed the sunshine and some even played golf, eh Spice!! Kevin Rose handicap being cut didn't affect his game dropping to 16 and coming in with an impressive 38 points to win collecting 50€ cash prize. John Eyre came second with an outstanding score of 37 with a handicap of 14 collecting 30€ and our Billy Wilson collecting third spot with a 16 handicap scoring 33, which on any other day could of won, Billy collecting 20€. Terry Tapster had a great day crashing the buggy and then getting last place to win a sleeve of balls. Well done Terry. Might get someone else to drive buggy though next time. Troy enjoyed his day throwing his golf clubs around then his car breaking down, hope all sorted now. NTP saw only 2 winners with all 19 players failing to hit the green on hole 13. Hole 7 was won by the cheeky Warren and hole 11 was won by Billy Wilson. Both won a 15€ Alehouse voucher sponsored by Ocean Properties Spain, Thank you for attending and thanks to all those who helped. Carp - R - Us Club News On Thursday the 2nd of June saw the Clubs anglers fishing round two of the Summer series at El Bosquet. Clear winner on the day with a weight of 18.12kg was Steve Fell. In second place was Tom Marshall with 8.82kg, third was Andy Foden with 7.91kg and in fourth place John Brightling with 7.36kg. The next match, round three of the series on 9th June, will be fished on the Eden canal stretch of the river Segura in Guardamar. Pegs at 8.00am and fishing from 9-00 till 2.00pm. Friday the 10th of June the Club is holding a race night at the club house. Tapes up at 7.45pm .Rolls and food will be available from the Bar. The Clubs next Quiz night will be on Tuesday the 14th of June.
EL RASO GOLF SOCIETY On Friday 27 May the El Raso GS played the monthly Stableford competition at Vistabella. Several of the members found the course quite challenging and were unable to take advantage of playing a number of holes second time around! However, there were a couple of our members who enjoyed the course and managed to achieve reasonable scores. Full competition results were as follows: NTP’s hole 4 Craig Hall hole 8 Lauraine Walker hole 15 Will York. Best front nine with 14 pts Harry Armstrong and best back nine Will York 15 pts c/b. In third place, Jan Shorley 27 pts second Craig Hall 35 pts and winner of the day George McCullum with 36 pts. After the game we returned to our home venue the Olde 9th in Quesada, for presentations and tasty refreshments prepared by the bar. Our next fixture at La Marquesa on Friday 24 June is the Captain’s Day. A fun day is promised with plenty of prizes, organised by our Captain, Bev Fairhurst.
Starting at 7.30pm the cost is 1 Euro per person and teams to a maximum of 6 are allowed to play. The next of our Sunday meetings will be on the 19th of June with the Committee at 10.30 followed by the General meeting at 11.00.
