The complaints from residents regarding the amount of Tiger mosquitoes has steadily been rising since they were first detected in the region in 2004 and this has lead to the local councils increasing the amount of times areas are treated with insects killing sprays The majority of concentrations of Tiger mosquitoes are in Isla Plana, La Azohía, Canteras, La Vaguada and Tentegorra, as well as Cabo de Palos and La Manga in the summer months. This year in a bid to control the spread of the Tiger Mosquito the council of Cartagena have initiated a public awareness campaign concerning how to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds. According to the council 80% of breeding grounds are found in people’s gardens and on balconies. A door-to-door campaign will begin next weekend where council employees will try and advise homeowners of any possible breeding grounds they may have and how to eradicate them. It is of very important to encourage members of the public to avoid leaving stagnant water in plant pots and flowerbeds, to put buckets and other water containers away, to change pets’ drinking water frequently and to avoid the formation of puddles in gardens. Swimming pools must also be regularly treated with chlorine regardless whether they are in use or not. Whilst many homeowners may be responsible for causing/ creating breeding grounds the majority of mosquito plagues can be found in puddles or stagnant water on wasteland or in marsh areas. Until the council sprays theses areas it is advisable to avoid them or make sure adequate repellant is applied to avoid getting bitten. In extreme cases involving the young or people with compromised immune systems an accumulation of Tiger Mosquito bites has led to people being hospitalized, so this matter must and should be taken seriously.

EXPATS MUST APPLY FOR A PROXY VOTE IN EU REFERENDUM BY TUESDAY 7TH JUNE
British expats who have been registered to vote in UK within the last 15 years have until Tuesday 7th June to apply for a proxy vote in the EU Referendum. That is the final deadline for registering to take part in one of the most historic decisions that the British people will make for a generation. The deadline for registering for a postal vote has now passed, but you can still appoint someone you trust in the UK to vote for you. Simon Manley, British Ambassador to Spain, said: “Although the deadline for expats to vote by post in the EU referéndum has now passed, you can still register to vote by proxy, as long as you do so by 7 June. We all know how important the referendum will be, for us, for our children, and for our country. “Whether you think we should leave or remain, I would encourage those who have not yet registered to vote, and who are eligible to do so, to avail themselves of this final opportunity to have their say on 23 June. “I am well aware that expats who have lived overseas for more than 15 years are ineligible, and I know that many are frustrated about that The government will bring forward the Overseas Elector Bill to abolish this arbitrary time limit, but it must undergo full
Parliamentary scrutiny and debate, so unfortunately it cannot be passed before the Referéndum.” More than 120,000 people with Spanish IP addresses have now visited www.gov.uk/register-to-vote since the beginning of the year. And thanks to the online registration system, more than 180,000 expats worldwide have so far completed their registration to vote, nearly double the number for last year’s General Election, which was itself a record figure. The process is easy and takes just five minutes. Go to www.gov.uk/register-tovote or search for ‘UK register to vote’ on www.gov.uk. You need only your National Insurance number and passport. If you did vote in the general election last year, don’t assume you are still on the electoral roll: just as in the UK, you must renew your registration every year. You have until 7 June to go online and make sure you can have your say. If you were last on the electoral roll in Northern Ireland then you need to act quickly. The Electoral Office for Northern Ireland says that if you are appointing a proxy to vote at the EU Referendum, the deadline for sending in your printed application is 5.00pm on 3 June.

Summer underway in Elche Elche town hall has announced that lifeguard services will start on many of the municipality´s beaches from Wednesday of this week. The service will be in operation every day, from 10:00 until 20:00, until September 18th, with six stations covering the beaches, as last year. There will be a two stations located at Arenales del Sol, and one each in El Altet, Carabassí, La Marina and playa del Rebollo. There will be a team of 32 lifeguards covering the season who will
have five sea-going vessels and two ambulances, each covering its own area. Special accessibility will commence at two of the beaches, Arenales del Sol and La Marina. On the weekend of June 11th, then uninterrupted from the 18th. There will also be a variety of sports and other activities organised for some of the beaches throughout the summer, namely at Arenales del Sol, La Marina and El Altet, which will commence in July. There will also be information points available at La Marina and Arenales del Sol from Friday 17th June, and the beaches of Arenales del Sol, El Altet, Carabassí, El Pinet, La Marina and El Rebollo will all have Wi-Fi.

Hug a Tree
I used to enjoy looking at the trees that run through the centre of our village. They are all the same, and can look untidy for part of the year. Birds and cicadas enjoy sitting on them and it is good to see greenery where otherwise there would be the usual concrete and tiles. Each year, Town Hall staff trim them, which can be amusing. Sometimes the trimming takes the form of cuboids or maybe pyramids - we never really know quite what to expect, but nature takes its course and they eventually resume their natural shape.
Although there are exceptions, it seems to me that very few Canarians or Spanish appreciate plants, trees and gardens. At every opportunity, their first inclination is to concrete over any remaining patch of soil that they see, or at least cover it with patio tiles. Occasionally, containers are purchased to stand on patios, beautiful plants are purchased, only to wither and die a few days later, because no one can be bothered to water them.
Several months ago, contractors arrived in our village to give the trees their annual trim. A few days later, I was horrified to see that the pruning had been total. Hardly a leaf or branch had been left in place and only a grey stump remained. Over the last few months I have checked, and it looks as if all the trees are dead. Several locals nod knowledgeably and assure me that this form of brutal pruning is necessary every few years, and that they will return to their former glory. Others shake their head and tell me that they are dead, but why does it matter? They are only trees after all...

Canaria, the island where I live, can boast the most amazing and beautiful botanical garden, Jardín Botánico Canario, near Las Palmas, which is always open to the general public. My partner and I have visited the garden many times, and are usually the only visitors. I doubt that many locals, or indeed tourists, know of its existence, or can be bothered to visit, but it is certainly one of the many treasures of this island.
Since we moved to a relatively dry and arid part of the Canary Islands, I have come to appreciate the natural beauty of plants and trees now even more than when I lived in the UK. On rare occasions, our neighbour decides to mow his tiny patch of grass, which is the size of a tablecloth; it is so small it takes only a couple of minutes to mow with a strimmer, and I deeply inhale the smell of newly mown grass, which takes me back to the lawn at our Dorset cottage garden that I used to curse during its weekly mowing. I now miss National Trust gardens, garden centres, complete with garden accessories, greetings cards and cream teas, as well as the variety, freshness and colour of British woodland in spring.
One of our neighbours was horrified when he saw me installing an underground watering system in the garden of our new home a few years ago. He shook his head, and commented that it would cost a lot of money to pay for the water, but in my opinion it is worth every cent. After all, I am a Brit, and I could not exist happily without plants around me.

For visitors over here for half term, remember whilst Roaming is now controlled to some extent the cost can still be horrendous. A visitor came in thinking her phone had been cloned as she got a bill for £600 for 1 month and thought someone was using her information to make calls, but no it was just long calls to the UK and other points had built up this jaw dropping figure. When in Spain or anywhere abroad get a local sim card from the country you are visiting, try doing it on your 1st day because it builds up very fast, in her case telling the family she arrived safely cost around £76.00! i.e. arrived safely but was mugged by my phone on day one. Fowof will supply a pay as you go sim card to use while here and the cost for a month is around 15€ giving you 5 hours of

had Internet all the time we were there. That way using whatsapp, no call charges, got our emails and my wife could keep up with the gossip on Facebook, plus I could play solitaire in the morning when everyone was in bed.
Though May has been a very busy month, with the amount of repairs and cleaning, last week was one of the busiest ever at Fowof since they opened, Anna said the surprising part is the distance people are travelling to get their item repaired. The main reason that people are travelling from far and wide to get to Fowof in Los Alcazares is the fast turnaround they offer. They normally return items within 24 hours, this is the obvious benefit of having three in house engineers working on site, whereas many other shops and stores have to send them away, leaving the customer without their item for up to 14 days. In many cases items that arrive at Fowof first thing in the morning are returned to the owner on the same day. Remember my horror stories of friends or friends of friends who can sort out/fix your computer or Tablet? This week yet another arrived at Fowof for repair, following the disastrous “fix” from a friend. As it turned out there was nothing that needed repair but once again this well meaning friend of a friend had tried to clean a Tablet owned by Mrs Williams, she then brought it to Fowof because it kept telling her there was a problem with the sites Certificate, not unusual? No many times you can get this, but on this occasion the sites in question were her Halifax Bank and also Easyjet, both were refused because of their certificates. They were stating out of date or were not valid on her operating system, the reason turned out because the so called engineer had wiped the certificate verifying system off of her tablet leaving it open to attack or as in this case it did not trust anyone or any site. These certificates had to be reintroduced and the operating system reintroduced. The cost in this case was 15€, but it would not have been needed had she heeded my warning about well meaning people thinking they can repair your item. The cost of cleaning the internal workings of a P.C is only 39€ and a Tablet can be as little as 10-15€ if the item has not been used as a test bed for budding computer engineers. Mrs Williams had paid the neighbours friend 20€ for effectively losing all her files then while trying to get them back he wiped the machines internal memory clear of items that are needed for its day to day operating system. Another happy and wiser customer left Fowof. Her friend brought hers in two days later after being told of the problem and had hers cleaned, hers was similar but her files were able to be reintroduced as the person had made a mistake of cleaning the SD card of all her photos but luckily had not cleaned its internal memory allowing Fowof’s engineer to put them back on her SD card, however other items that were not saved were lost forever, but she was pleased that precious photos of her grandchildren could be rescued. She also found after the transfer to the SD card her machine was so much faster and also did not need rebooting, that her friend told her was required weekly! Again he charged 20€ yet hers was only 10€ to put right and would only have cost that figure at the outset.

These units are one of the best sellers, the size of a matchbox it can also recharge your phone if it runs low, very clever piece of equipment, initially most buyers were people with mobile homes who need a system not reliant on having a dish or even an electric point. Just put it in your home and you can then use all your equipment from anywhere in the house, the average monthly cost from local suppliers is 23€ so you get your money back in a short time. So Mc Illroy is joining the many other golfers avoiding the Olympics, he gave his reason as the Zika virus which he says is prevalent in Brazil. I guess we can’t blame him, after all the Zika virus is rapidly spreading and is a serious health hazard. Although the WHO (World Health Organisation) have said that cancelling or moving the Olympics in Rio would "not significantly alter" the spread of the virus, which is linked to serious birth defects. In an open letter to the WHO, more than 100 leading scientists had said new findings about Zika made it "unethical" for the Games to go ahead. They also said the global health body should revisit its Zika guidance. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has said it sees no reason to delay or move the Games because of the mosquito-borne disease. The outbreak began in Brazil a year ago, but now more than 60 countries and territories have continuing transmission. The golfers of the world are using the Zika virus as a reason to not participate and so therefore it could be expected that other athletes may decide to not enter. Zika is spreading fast and UK families are being advised to postpone trips to the USA especially the hotter southern states where it is expected that the Zika virus will likely spread to in the summer. According to leading scientists Texas, Louisiana and Florida – which contains Miami, Cape Canaveral and the Florida Keys, should be avoided until the virus is eliminated. Now I understood the likelihood of catching it is remote due to the protections put in force by the organisers of the Olyimpics but it would appear yet again I am incorrect. The Zika virus poses a threat to all adults who may be planning on having children as it can also be transmitted sexually and causes severe birth defects. But it also seems a way for the highly paid athletes in the fields of Tennis and Golf to cop out of participating and continuing instead with their highly lucrative careers playing in competitions backed by wealthy sponsors. Sponsors have taken over the sports and rule the athletes, some of the examples of ridiculous sponsors include Formula One race drivers who after coming in 1st , 2nd or 3rd they put their watches on before going up to the rostrum to collect their trophies. Obviously after driving at 200 miles an hour for 2 hours then winning a Grand Prix the first thing you think of is, what is the time? Have you ever watched Skiing? After racing at 90 miles an hour down a vertical slope they get to the bottom and the first thing they do is
put their Skis upright with the sponsors name so it can be clearly seen. Advertising is now clearly one of the major sponsors of the Olympics, I preferred the amateurs battling it out leaving the professionals to look after their living; after all people like Roger Bannister who ran the first sub 4 minute mile was a practicing doctor, he had no time for TV appearances, selling certain footwear that make you run or walk faster. Now even Athletes get appearance money, many years ago the Olympics were for amateurs only, what a shame now it seems that the elite have infiltrated the competition, except golfers who earn too much money and most of the top players have shunned the Olympics for financial gains elsewhere. Hopefully the organisers will see that the winner will not be representative of the players in the world only the ones bothering to turn up and take part who are not bothered about catching the disease I was asked to point out that Roda Golf has a new TV system that is only representing realistically 5 channels, what I can not understand nor the person who emailed me, Sky Freeview offers around 50 channels, so why can they only manage 5 with the huge satellite Dishes and space available to them on site? Perhaps if there were a specific charge they would add more channels? Though listed as 23 channels, 5 are all ITV and 5 are BBC! Arriving at San Javier Airport on Tuesday last week I was surprised to find not the one customs control booth, but 3 new extra ones? Does this at last put to sleep the Corvera Airport saga? Perhaps now Airlines can start to plan in advance their new schedules and hopefully more flights to San Javier, giving better prices and more realistic timings. Many golfers complain the cost of arriving in Murcia against Alicante; it can increase the cost of their stay by up to 50%. As a guide, on Wednesday a flight to Gatwick from San Javier was listed as 156€, the same from Alicante with a choice of 4 flights with Easyjet started from 59€ with a top price of 86€, though we have had the choice we always think that the travelling from Alicante to Murcia adds 50€ to your fare, so a single traveller is better off sticking with San Javier, but a family can save over 200€ flying into Alicante against direct to Murcia, they then think they could go to Benidorm, Javea, Denia, with the cheap prices on offer at these resorts. So let’s hope the expansion at San Javier airport continues and the prices get back to what they used to be before the uncertainty of Corvera dissuaded airlines from scheduling flights. Danny Willett after winning the Masters in Augusta Georgia, fell short in his following competition, he could only manage joint 23rd, yet he is listed as the Top seed for the Wentworth BMW PGA Championship this weekend, how is that possible? Well Danny Willett and Justin Rose were the only two players left in the draw who are within the top 20 golfers, then Justin withdrew through injury leaving Danny Willett as the sole top 20 player. Why are there no other players at such a prestigious event? One can only presume there is better money to be earned elsewhere. Perhaps sponsors should start looking at the missing top players and not send out their invitations next time, or better still, stop paying them the ludicrous appearance fees that they can obviously afford to turn down. This can only be aligned to the start of Golf at the Olympics where the winner could be a total unknown who though he will be crowned Olympic Champion, he will receive no credibility for his win because his class opponents were missing. I
believe it is time that the Olympics went back to being an amateur or even a maximum of semi amateur, so that these elitist so called Sportsmen, this includes Tennis, Golf, Football, etc., are not rewarded for attending or not attending. Why have competitions on at the same time when the Olympics are on? Surely 3-4 weeks every 4 years could be set aside for non-paid people playing their relevant sport for exactly that and not for the amount of money they receive for winning or attending, to bump up viewing figures. This time it has proved that if you can give top players a reason to not represent their country, they will step aside; especially when there is no financial gain involved, they will use whatever as an excuse for non-attendance. Years ago most of us will remember when winners came from the Armed forces or a company sponsored individual, who were not only working but also training to be good at their chosen sport. Now a Runner like Bolt, a golfer like Woods, a tennis player like N Djokovic, can command 1,000’s of pounds in appearance money alone even if they do not win but at an Athletic meeting the advertising of Usane Bolt running, can up the gate by 30% so the appearance money is chicken feed, the golf is the same. Tiger Woods and McIllroy will attract many more people than the likes of Danny Willett, who though won a major is still not consistent enough to attract major sponsors. So the Olympics will not be representative of these Sports, I am a watcher of the Olympics but can not stand other sports being added that the participants are overpaid professionals I am the worlds largest critic especially as far as football is concerned, being one of the few who can see no Sportsmanship within the game, with 22 men running, only to fall over in the penalty area, to get a free kick or a Penalty instead of trying to score through skill. Also the writhing around in agony for 30 seconds until the Referee gives a Penalty, only then to get
up and run around as normal so as to take it and receive the accolade for there acting prowess, but how can any man be worth 50 million pounds? Mc Illroy has after winning the Irish open, the event he sponsors on behalf of a charity returned to a bit of form he donated his winnings plus the gate receipts to the charity who benefitted by some 1 million euros. On a Personal basis he still trails the money list, by what we would call a long way, the bad part of the golf game is money, it now means that the top 40 winning players have all won in excess of 15 million dollars, yes right down to fortieth position; now in most other sports you would be getting the dregs but Rory with what can only be described as a middling year winnings were 2 million in 24th place??? Crazy. Jason Day and Adam Scott lead the field with around the 5 million mark each?? How much does someone need to earn in a year?? This is without sponsorship, plus appearance money etc., so the middle of the road golfer around 60th in the list still earns in excess of 1 million dollars a year Phew!! Jealous? you bet I am, but I am sure many will agree that this like football and Tennis is losing all reality with regard to Prize money. In one competition a player came joint 20th and
collect 43,000 dollars! You would think that more suitable for the winner yet some events now have a first prize in excess of 1
million Dollars Strangely after winning but donating his purse to the charity as promised, leaves Mc Illroy with a chasm with regard to winnings, leaving him some 3 million in arrears of the leaders.
Even the Irish open win, which he has only managed 7th in the past, all others years, he has missed the cut? Not a great record. But at least in this case he won with an eagle at the last and all the money goes to a charity and a very good cause.
